The flowers of spring are still blooming, but the predominant color at this time of the year is now a lush, vibrant green -- even in some parts of the mountain. But here, the rocky surface glimmers brightly from the sun shining down from above, making for a wonderful sunning surface for some of the older Sisters of the Amaranth. A light breeze makes the heat just bearable enough for two of the tribe's younger members to be a little more active, having rendezvoused at their usual hang out spot near the edges of her parents' territory. Perhaps a little less playful than they were as cubs, though, as they're still just lazing about atop the flat stones here, but even so they're still perched alertly and chatting together amiably. A giggle from Aurora is punctuated with an affectionate lick to Peyote's cheek, her tailtip flicking about absentmindedly behind them both.
Kein's reluctance to approach his youngest child is seen in that he has been sitting here for some time, just listening to the quiet sounds that reach him. He has spoken to Cael, Nuba, Crevan, Kaya... And now it's Aurora's turn. He would much rather just sit here and listening to the soft giggling and quiet voices. Nevermind that he isn't quite close enough to make out the words. The sound of his youngest daughter's voice is soothing, all the same. Finally, though, he works up his willpower and stands to approach the formations, his expression calmed as he does.
Peyote laughs in answer to the girls giggle and lick. Though he splays his ears back and looks away trying to maintain a macho facade. Hes a growing boy and has to watch out for his image after all. "Yah well.. the coyotes never were that great at climbing trees. Peyote says with a snicker, finishing off his story. He smiles brightly at his best friend and twists the ear closest to the source of a sound towards it and looks to see who it is that approaches. "Hey isn't that your dad?" He mutters and flitflicks his tail before sitting up with a sigh as the older male approaches them. Its hard to keep your respect for the elders when the sun rays keep you tied down to the warm rocks.
Aurora's ears prick forward when Peyote points out her father, soft green eyes turning to seek him out. With a delighted smile, the small yet slender female leaps nimbly off the edge of the rock, trotting up to the Chieftain with a rumbling purr. "Hi, daddy!" she greets cheerfully, turning to pad back over to Peyote alongside Kein. "Peyote and I were just hangin' around. You need us to help with somethin'?" Despite her somewhat undersized stature, Aurora is still older, and she's gradually learning what her role as a Sister in the Amaranth means. Having started to sun with the other females her mother's age in the tribe, she's been carefully observing the particular workings of the sisterhood that's kept them so close knit for a handful of generations now.
Kein greets his daughter with an affectionate nuzzling, and when she turns to walk alongside him back to Peyote, he begins walking again, his pace relaxed to close the short distance. Once he begins walking again, he answers his daughter question with a smile and the statement, "Not help, per se, but I would like to speak with you for a moment, if you have the time. Both of you." His tone is a lot softer than when he started this conversation with his sons. For a while, he considered asking Aurora to speak to him privately, but even though he does not know any of Ohanzee's children well, Peyote included, he knows enough to know that peyote spends a lot more time away from his brothers and foster parents than the rest of them do. He might yet have Kasim tell the other two, but there is no reason he ought to shy away from being the one to speak with Peyote, since the boy is already here. No matter how much he might like to.
Peyote stays put as his companion rushes over to meet her father. "Hello Sir, how are you today?" The boy asks, mustering up more politeness.. though really its not that difficult for him. He enjoys having the security of the large family group and despite being away from his foster family so much, he has still managed to be raised with an air of politeness.. perhaps to keep in good standing here. Hearing that theres a talk coming, he ducks slightly and looks a bit concerned. Hes no stranger to talking tos and apparently he wouldn't mind shying as well.
Aurora giggles at Peyote when she hops back up onto the low ledge with him, nipping playfully at his ear. She finds it funny that he'd call her father 'sir', but then again she's in a quite different position in relation to the Chieftain. The young mountain lioness' own brows furrow in concern when Kein mentions needing to speak with them, honestly not having much of an idea as to what the conversation might be about. She's not nearly in as much trouble as her siblings tend to be, after all. "What is it, daddy?"
"I am doing well, Peyote. Could you come down here, please?" There is good reason for them all to be on equal footing when this conversation begins, but Kein remains polite, himself, and his tone keeps that soft quality to it. Neither of them are in trouble, and after speaking, the Chieftain sits. He has no idea how this conversation might go, but he hopes to keep it calm.
Peyote smiles to Aurora when she comes up to him again and acks shaking his head when his ear is nipped at. "Heh, quitit." He kitty-forehead bonks her really quick and hops down from the ledge.. half because Kein asked and half to get away from her. Though the moment he hits the ground he looks up to see if she will follow him down too. "Whats up?"
Aurora has been doing a lot of ledge-leaping lately, but this descent seems to be the last for now. Settling down quietly on her haunches beside Peyote, she looks up at Kein with an equally curious look on her face.
With all of them on the ground now, Kein says, first, "You've both grown really well." Aurora a little less than the others, but she has grown more than just physically. "I want you to know, first and foremost, that I could not possibly be more proud of you, Aurora. And you, Peyote." Would he have searched Peyote out to tell him anything of the sort, had the boy not been here? Probably not, but he is not simply saying it, all the same. He approves of Peyote as a friend for his youngest daughter, even while it hurts him to know that relationship may take his little girl away from him as it continues to grow.
Peyote smiles over at Aurora and looks all proud of himself. Hey the chieftain just said he was proud of them. He perks his ears up to hear more as so far this is going better than most lectures he gets..
Aurora exchanges a smile with Peyote, glancing back at Kein a moment later to offer a polite note of gratitude: "Thank you, daddy." She expects he has more to say, though, or else he went right out of his way to compliment the pair of them.
Kein smiles brightly at both of them for a moment. It doesn't take long for the smile to fade, though. Here's where the conversation might take a less pleasant turn. Looking at Aurora, he says, "You mother and I have been speaking a lot recently. We have decided that it is time for Amaranth to start reconnecting with the older traditions. That is why I have come to speak to you. Very soon, Aurora... You will have to leave us for a time." If only Nayeli were not so tired with her advancing pregnancy, perhaps she would be the one doing this conversation. Kein is certainly not thrilled to be the one doing it, but he is resolved.
Aurora listens closely to everything her father says, but she looks genuinely confused at his last words, wondering if she missed something somewhere. "Leave? But..why?" She looks over at Peyote with concern in her eyes, hoping that even if she does have to leave, she can leave with him alongside her -- and not without him.
Peyote seems to settle down as the talk gets started.. but that only lasts as long as it take for him to finish his first piece before the boy speaks up interrupting the flow abruptly. "Wait what? What are you talking about?" Kein isn't the only one not thrilled about this.
"Your mother knows a little more than I do, and I suspect you will be speaking with her soon... But not until after she gives birth." Kein, after all, did not spend a lot of his childhood in Amaranth. Nayeli did, and she's female. She never got a chance to leave on her own spirit quest... Something she may want to do sooner or later, now that at least one of her daughters will be... But she was at least raised with more knowledge of it than Kein was. "You are growing into a fine young adult, Aurora-" There is only a brief glance towards Peyote. He will speak more directly with the boy soon, but his daughter is his priority. "-and it is coming time for you to convene with the spirits that will help you through adulthood."
Peyote splays his ears back and just looks worried about all of this. He looks to Aurora and then back at her father and just goes quiet. The rules don't really matter, there's absolutely no way hes leaving his best friend alone to chase after some spirits. His tailtip flitflicks about beside him and he just stays quiet.... for now
Convene with the spirits? What exactly is it she's gonna be doing out there beyond her homeland's borders? Aurora doesn't look much less bewildered even with the additional explanation, but she does have another question for the Chieftain: "Can...can Peyote come with me?" After growing up surrounded by family and friends, she's honestly desperately afraid of being alone, out on her own in unfamiliar wilderness...and it shows.
Kein shoulders slump. If he could, /Kein/ would go with her, but besides that he has to be here for his mate, Nayeli was quite certain that this is something young cougaresses are meant to do alone. His daughter's fear doesn't make that easy for Kein to pass on though. "There are many things you will do alone as you continue to grow, 'Rora. This has to be one of them." There is no judgment in his tone. Only regret, and... contemplation.
Peyote looks to Aurora when she sounds so worried about having to do this alone. He wants to calm her and tell her that she will never have to be alone so long as hes around.. but with Kein's answer to the question he finally just has to disagree. "No.. Aurora. You won't go alone. I won't let you!" The young passionate growing little teenaged male has made his stand on this one. Never has a kid looked so serious about something in Amaranth!
Aurora's ears slick back against her skull, the pale young cougaress looking down at the ground as she tries to reconcile what it all means, how it all feels to her. She doesn't say anything, not lashing out angrily like her older sister likely would, merely remaining solemnly silent as the girl tries to take it all in and figure out what to say or do. But apparently, Peyote does that for her. Aurora's eyes lift in surprise at her friend having spoken out against her father, the Chieftain, and she quickly glances back at Kein to see his response. She's still at a loss for words, however, not wanting to speak out against her father but neither wanting to be made to leave on her lonesome.
Kein turns his gaze to Peyote, his tail flicking in anger. This is difficult enough for Kein without having the boy question him, and he can't help but be irritated by it. "You will /not/ do anything to interfere, Peyote. Do I make myself clear?" The growling in his tone is not difficult to hear... And Kein does a remarkable job of hiding the fact that he is thinking of asking Peyote to keep an eye on Aurora, from a distance. Close enough he could be there to help should anything go wrong, but far enough away that Aurora will have a sense of solitude, to be matched by a sense of accomplishment when she returns.
Peyote gets all quiet right away when Kein gives his reply and cowers a bit because he is still quite small.. Though as any delinquent would he will still do exactly as he wants he just doesn't have to mention that here.
Aurora's ears completely flatten once again, and is glad when Peyote doesn't protest further. The last thing she wants is for her father and her best friend to be mad at each other, and if it means her leaving alone, then so be it. "It...it's okay, Peyote. I'll see you again afterwards." She looks up at Kein timidly, a little trigger-shy as she asks: "Do I have to leave now?" Perhaps she can at least say goodbye to Peyote before she has to do this.
Though the boy doesn't respond verbally, Kein's growling fades quickly. Very soon, he will speak to Peyote alone. He will have to. Looking back to his daughter, he takes a deep breath, then says, "You do not have to leave for a moon or two yet, Aurora. You will have time to prepare. The only reason I am telling you this now is because we, your mother and I, wanted to give you plenty of warning, so you could have time to think about it. Time to speak to your mother and some of the other females who did the same thing, when they were your age." Moonseeker, perhaps? Of Paoro's daughters, Moonseeker is the one she knows the best. The next time he sees her, he'll ask her to seek out Aurora.
Peyote seems to settle again once the growling stops and he just looks to Aurora for now as she gets told whats going to happen and that its first later on that she has to leave. He sighs in relief hearing that and turns back to hop back up onto the ledge again.. pouting about all of this news. But the moment he gets the chance hes going to cheer up again and drag Aurora right up with him. This is actually pretty exciting news if you really think about it, especially since he is going too..
Aurora nods solemnly, accepting her mission from the Chieftain with heavy thought apparent on her mind. She looks back when Peyote hops back up to their previous seat, but she doesn't move yet, looking back at her father a moment later. "Is there anything else, daddy?"
Kein did not keep calm as well as he wanted to. Not surprising, perhaps, given all of the things that are constantly on Kein's mind, but he regrets it, all the same. Shaking his head slightly, he says, "No. There is nothing else, except that I love you, Aurora. Whether you are in Amaranth or out of Amaranth at any time, that will never change. You know that, right?" It's true of all his children. He doesn't have a favorite, as such... But he enjoys what time he gets with Aurora, probably more than any of her siblings, because of how generally relaxed it is. He only hopes that this has done nothing to change that.
Peyote just lies there flitting his tail about in contemplation of all this new stuff. He always knew that he would have to leave out on his own one day, but never did he once think that Aurora would be made to. This spirit quest stuff is just something he does not understand much of though.
Aurora glumly nods her head. "Yes, daddy. I love you too." She will likely not change from the happy, sunshiney girl that she is from just this one incident -- this is merely part of growing up, after all -- but she will need a little time to recover. Probably time with Peyote, at that. Assuming the conversation to be finished, at least for now, Aurora moves to hop back up onto the ledge with her companion, laying down on her stomach beside him.
Kein takes another deep breath and looks to Peyote. Kein has made no mention of Peyote leaving, and he doesn't intend to, at least not now, but... "I would like to speak to you privately in the next few days, Peyote... But for now, you two try to have fun, okay?" He is not going to push the conversation any further for now, but it is not /quite/ over. Still, there was no anger in Kein's tone when he spoke. He has no idea that Peyote is still thinking of defying him, and that is not exactly what is on his mind.
Peyote smiles as Aurora comes up next to him on the rock and reaches his head over to give her a nuzzle to try and cheer her up. "Hey.. it will be okay." He whispers comfortingly. If anything its going to be tons of fun going on an adventure with his best friend! The boy ducks a bit when he hears that hes going to be talked to again soon and just looks a bit scared but nods to Kein quietly. Hes the chief after all.
Aurora purrs softly at the nuzzle, already a little cheered by Peyote's reassuring words. She nods back at her father, then lays her head down beside the other male for a quiet moment just to think.
