Characters Involved: Sigrii (F. Copperhead Snake), Shad (M. Bobcat)
Location: Lowlands, Midday?
Other: Had to post this one... it's very short since Sigrii had to leave, but a certain someone wanted to see it too.

Wind-Blown Lowlands
================================================================================
Tall, flowing grasses extend in every direction here, rolling hills rising up toward the mountains in the south. Down from the craggy precipices churns a nearly constant flow of air, rippling gently through the tall, thick grasses. The nearly unending winds cause the few small trees that have taken root here to bend slightly, as though they are simply too tired to continue their unending stretch toward the sun's merciful rays.
That is not to say this place is uninviting or somber. The yellow-green grasses are randomly interrupted by the aforementioned small trees, and the occasional taller tree which has managed to defy the windy onslaught to reach higher, providing shade for those below, and lodging for the tree-bound above. The perpetual currents of air cause the clouds above to tumble and wisk by, creating strange and dappled shadows on the land below as they pass over the sun, and in this windswept land, thunderheads roll in unexpectedly to dump a deluge upon the denizens before moving off as it arrived.

The grass parts silently and almost unnoticeably as a serpent slides through it. Sigrii moves over the hilly terrain, tongue flicking rapidly in and out of her mouth as she hunts. Mice should be easy to find in this tall grass, but she hasn't had any luck yet. Just then, when she's considering returning to a waterside area for a meal of frogs, a warm spot flickers into her view. She freezes to make out the shape of a small field rat, then begins moving slowly toward it.
Oh. This place is nice. The observation is a simple one as Shadrach makes his way quietly through the area, paws placed carefully. He, too, is on the hunt, but in a different fashion. His golden eyes scan the area for any big shapes, while his dark gray nose sniffs out any scents that may come his way... in particular, he's looking for prey-scents. The blue-gray bobcat suddenly stops moving when he finds what he's looking for. A scent -- rat, it smells like -- lingers not too far away from his small, lithe form. A half-smile forms on Shad's maw as she lowers his entire body slightly. He doesn't even notice the scent of snake... foolish feline.
Intent on her prey, Sigrii slides closer, not noticing the approaching feline. The mouse doesn't notice them, either, and goes on about the business of eating grass seeds. Finally within striking range, Sigrii pulls her body up into an "S" shape, completely silent and tensed. With only the slight sound of rustling grass, she lunges forward, jaws open, fangs spread, aiming straight for the rodent, unsuspecting of anything that may fall in her way.
His bobtail twitches. He hasn't had rat in a while. Though he'd prefer rabbit. But hey. You take what you can get out here -- even a prideful kitty like Shad knows that. Inching forward, he searches for his prey by sight... only to be disappointed -- and perhaps a little alarmed -- a few moments later. He probably never would've seen it if he hadn't been looking for that rat. But there, there in the grass is a snake! Inexperienced with serpentine critters like the copperhead, Shad immediately stops what he's doing and tenses, his fur standing on end in a matter of seconds. That's when he realizes that there's a rat. Right there. "Hey!" the feline shouts suddenly, "That was /mine/!" ...not like snakes can talk. Can they? o.O;
The sudden noise from nearby distracts Sigrii mid-strike and she misses her mark, snapping just behind the mouse and giving it time and incentive to flee. The copperhead usually tries to avoid confrontation, but that voice just cost her a good meal, and she raises herself up above the grass to see where it came from. A cat of some sort....sinking back into the deep grass, Sig' coils up on top of herself, pulling her head back in a threatening posture. "That was hardly a bite for you! You just cost me a month of food!" She's pissed, not to mention hungry, and the bobcat's impudence isn't helping.
The serpent coils back. That can't be good. Shad takes a big step back, just for good measure. ...and then... it /talks?!/ Wha- no way! It -- no, a /she/ from the sound of things -- is /talking!/ The slate-colored feline can't quite believe his ears. Maybe he's gone mad? No. It's undeniable. The snake talked. Taking a breath, Shad tries to get enough of his wits back to speak. "Yeah, so?" he replies quickly -- he probably shouldn't be arguing with i- her. Is a snake still a lady? He'll ponder over it later. Momma always said be nice to ladies. Awkward pause. He shakes his head, "Nevermind. We /both/ lost the thing, anyway," he points out bluntly, his ears splaying.
Sigrii glares angrily at the warm-blood before her, keeping her tense pose for a moment. After another few moments of anger, Sigrii lowers her body back to the ground, tongue flicking to take in the bobcat's scent. This snake is not a very impulsive one, and she's very good at keeping her temper, despite her constant angry expression--that just comes with the species. "I suppose," she grumbles. "I'm Sigrii."
Shad's back is arched and his form tense until the snake lowers from her threatening posture. Then, his bobtail twitches once, twice, and then lowers as he relaxes and allows himself to settle comfortably onto his haunches. If she shows any signs of becoming violent, he's outta here. But for now? Sure. Why not converse with a snake? He didn't even know they could talk to begin with! He's suprised she doesn't talk with a lisp or something, though. Guess they're not a stupid as he might've thought... "I'm Shad," he announces confidently, a cocky half-smile playing on his maw as he straightens a little. "I'm sure ther're other little critters out there to eat," he says with a half-shrug. He's gone from irritated to nonchalant. Heh. That's Shad for ya.
"Yes, frogs are better anyway. I was just considering heading back to a pond when I spotted that rat," Sigrii says, tongue-flicking and loooking at the cat. "Why would you even bother with a rat? Seems like that'd be just a nibble for a big animal like you." Sig' has little concept of "take what you can get;" she can't just strike at every little thing she sees, since it takes time for her venom to replenish itself and she might miss a good meal after taking a smaller one.
Frogs? "Yeah, frogs're nice. I'd rather eat a rabbit, though," he replies with a nod of agreement. Then her question. The felid blinks slowly, a brow quirking. "Well. You take what you can get out here and such," he replies, his expression clearly saying "duh." A moment later, his eyes shine with curiousity, "Don't you?"
Rabbit...bunnies. Mm, bunnies are delicious, if Sigrii can catch one. She's only had them a few times, but they were much better than rats or frogs. She'd return the "duh" expression if she could form expressions, but instead she replies flatly, "No, I don't. If I don't hit my prey right, I can lose a fang, and I only have so many. So I don't bother with little things when I can get something like a rat or a fat mouse." She shifts her position a little, curling comfortably with her head on one of her coils. She doesn't expect the cat to understand snake things, but sometimes there's no other way to explain things.
Oh. So /that's/ it. Shadrach blinks several times, trying to comprehend. Nonetheless, he replies with a quick, "Gotchya," then bobs his head as if he understands exactly what she's said. "I don't live like that -- I eat when I can, and then only if I can actually /catch/ it. Of course, I usually do catch what it is I'm after," he says proudly, but then pauses and deflates a little as he recalls this last attempt. "Usually," he adds as an afterthought. "Too bad you lose teeth like that, though," he comments absently, thinking about what would happen if he lost any of his precious fangs...
Sigrii nods sagely, glad at least to have extra fangs; what would this cat do without one of his four? Surely he would be a less impressive hunter. The snake reigns her mind back into the present and comments, "You're much bigger than the last cat I spoke to."
Shad lifts his brows. There are cats smaller than the bobcat around? As far as he knew, his species was one of the smaller ones out there... but then again, there were those /one/ cats... "Smaller?" He stands, inspects his figure -- he's by no means a large feline himself, not even for his species -- then looks at the copperhead with an interested expression. "Must've been one of those... /others/," he says, referring to the domestic cats that come in many more colors than any other cat he knows of. "... they're the only kind I can think of that would be smaller than my kind," he replies bluntly. Then a soft sound reaches his ears, and his head turns and ears perk. ...food? "Anyway. Interesting to meet you, Sigrii," his head whips around to look at the snake again. He supposes even snakes must be ladies. "Never got to chat with a snake before," he bears his fangs in a grin, "...never knew anyone /could/." His grin seems to widen, then disappears.
"It was small, and black, that's all I know," Sigrii responds, and she'd shrug if she had shoulders. It was in fact a domestic cat, but she can hardly tell the warm-bloods apart. The snake lifts her head as Shad is distracted and gives his goodbyes, and responds in kind, "I was pleased to meet a cat that didn't want to harm me, and it was good to speak with you as well." She nods and adds, "Good hunting to you!" as he leaves, then off to the river she goes, in search of her dinner.
