Trickling River
----------------
It's summer once again, and the heat is already setting in nicely in Catori's opinion. Through much of the year, the cow Elk has remained in this very spot, near the river. It has a peaceful serenity to it, one that she hates to leave. Though she is still part of the Umber herd, since Niabi's disappearance, she has only briefly encountered the Whitetail Buck who is now in charge. Having no opinion on the male whatsoever, she simply keeps to herself, and that seems to be fine by everyone. The female's head is lowered to the ground at the moment, her teeth picking up and chewing on various lengths of grasses. Lifting her dark, thin neck, the cow's ears swivel this way and that, picking up any lingering sounds. Unfortunately, the trickling of the river is just enough to distract her for the moment. Letting out a light sigh, the Elk's hooves carry her into the shallow bit of the river, and she bends down to get a drink.
It has been days since Ojalo last saw anyone from the herd, elk or deer alike. It bothered him just enough to actually start looking for them and with little success so far he sighs under his breath. In near silent steps, he moves through the foliage of the forest nearing the sound of water with the hopes of a pleasent sighting.
The Bull is not alone in his frustrations for not knowing where the rest of the herd is. Though, unlike him, she has no problem with her solitude. In fact, she found it quite relaxing most of the time. Not many predators venture through the area, which is both suprising and relieving to Catori. Those large brown ears of hers flick backward and remain that way, her deep red eyes staring off into the distance, hearing something beyond the water. A hoof raises in anticipation to flee, but the scent isn't forboding, from what she can tell. Though, being upwind doesn't help in this situation. Instinct tells her to freeze, but she remains just as ready to book it if need be.
Ojalo didn't necessarily mind the solitude, having spent most of his life alone wondering this forsaken place; however having company was certianly something he looked forward to whenever he could acquire it. A hard task to achieve most the time, he never stoped his search; accepting whatever came or didn't come to him. Holding his head mid level, brushing his anters against a few random trees as he passed them, the bull stops sidelong to the river dipping his head down for a drink even though the scent of a rather particular someone catches nose. Looking up as he drank, ears squivel to each sound; a casual apperance yet a watchful one as well.
Catori's cautiousness served her well, as it seemed that the object that was causing the noise in the background was none other than that bull Elk from before, Ojalo. A smile appears, and her hoof rests with a small splash in the water, before she breaks out into a trot, the water swishing and splashing around her legs as she does so. "Hello!" She calls out in a happy tone of voice, her tail flicking a bit anxiously as her eyes scan the male, making sure that it really was the one that she had met before. As she nears him, she keeps her head up. "Long time, no see!"
Ojalo twitches an ear to the fmailiar voice, looking up with water dripping from his mouth. "Oh.." he starts off staying, taking a few steps back, "Why hello there.. Catori." He honestly didn't expect to find her here but can't sasy that he isn't glad either. Looking at the female he smiles. "Seems we keep running into each other out here." he chuckles lightly.
The smile never leaving her face, Catori can't help but let out a small giggle at the male's suprise, and nods her head enthusiastically. "Not enough, though! I wish you males didn't wander around so much.." she said, as she liked to stick right around here. With him being the only other Elk around, she had considered searching for him on occasion and simply making him her travelling partner, much as Niabi was before her disappearance. However, she knew how.. strange the bulls could be sometimes, and she didn't want to come off as a nuisance. "So.. will you be around here for very long?
Ojalo honestly didn't know how long he would be anywhere; though he supposes he /could/ stay around here for a while if someone asked him too. "Us males.. you sound as if you've run into many." he smirks. "I go where I am needed. If you wish me to say all you need is ask." He tells her nonchalantly.
This was great news! All she had to do was ask him to stay, and he would! A hoof raises and her ears perk forward in a bit of excitement, her eyes seeming to light up for a moment there. "I would love it if you would stay! It's safe around here anyway.. but it'd be especially safe with you around, I think." She says with a wide grin, looking up at the impressive antlers that Ojalo hosted. Setting her hoof down back in the shallow water, she shrugged her shoulders a bit, and bent her neck down to get a drink. With some water dripping from her snout, she shook her head. "Nah. Not around here I haven't.. you and one other are the only males that I've seen." She said, a bit somberly. She did miss the company. "But, there were plenty of males back home."
Ojalo chuckles at her response to his rather obvious plee to stay. "Then its settled.. I shall stay." He buffs out his cheast and holds his head high before raising a brow at the female. "You think..." He can't help but chuckle some. So, she has seen one other besides him; he looks around slightly. "Only one.. I suppose that makes things easier on me then.." he jokes.
Catori isn't a calf by any means, but for a moment there, she wanted to prance around triumphantly at the news that he would stick around. Great! She couldn't be more happy at the moment, and her expression showed it. A wide smile appeared, and she couldn't help but trot up to his side and give him a brief nuzzle along his neck. The female was just so.. so.. excited! Though, she backs off pretty quickly, and shakes her head. "You're the only one I've seen since.. fall, I think?" She shrugged, and let out a sigh. "I guess that makes things especially easy on you, huh?"
"I guess I should be honored then." The bull announces following the females movement with his gaze; chuckling some even to her childish antics. Her touch he smiles to, a feeling quite missed yet he doesn't show it. With a sigh of his own to follow he looks away from Catori before saying, "I wish it wasn't so easy... Lifes just not as intersting if theres nothings to gain through its challenges."
She was far too excited, and she knew this. Calming down, Catori cleared her throat and stood up a little taller. Had Niabi seen her reaction to having the bull stick around, the older cow would've probably scolded her or something. However, Niabi wasn't around, and so Catori was able to freely express her happyness. Nodding her head, she kind of agreed with what he said about the lacking challenges, not bothering to be offended. She wasn't /that/ sensitive. "That may be so.. but who knows? Maybe we'll run into more like us, and you'll be leading a harem in no time." This was a hope, even for the female. A herd with Whitetails was fine.. but she couldn't help but feel like she was outcasted because of her species. A seperate Elk herd was a good dream.
The thought of finding other liek them was liek a dream, one thought he just couldn't fathom; not here anyway. He had been over nearly every inch of this forest and not an Elk to be found that he would even dare to ask to join them. Another sigh escapes him as he turns from the wilds and to the female as she mentions something about /him/ leading a harem. "Me.. a harem.." he nearly sounds as if joking at the idea, but then.." You really think so..." He's mind set changes - What if.
It'd been long since Catori even bothered trying to recruit for the herd. The disappearance of, who some might've called her 'mentor' had broken a part of her spirit for a while there, thinking that the worse had happened. An attack from a wolf pack, coyotes, dogs, cougars.. anything. Whatever happened, happened, and there was nothing she could do about it. A sombering sigh escaped the cow, and she flicked her ears back, relaxed finally. "Sure, why not?" She offered with a smile, encouraging Ojalo. Though she /still/ had her doubts that they were the last Elk in the area, she could sense that he might've thought that. "I think you'd make a great leader."
Ojalo thinks about the possibility for a while before suddenly remembering the last thing spoken to him before he left his home. 'One is not born into leadership.. it is discovered within oneself. A true leader can only be made; remember that.' He wonders if this is what was meant by that. A shrug to his own thoughts, "I'm glad you think that." he says. "Only time will tell for sure on such things." Even if he were to make a great leader, he sure doesn't feel as if he would; least not yet anyway.
Though she cannot read his thoughts, Catori has always been the intuitive sort.. knowing to a very vague extent what others might be thinking of. The thoughtful look on Ojalo's face concerns her, and she tilts her head to one side as he is lost in his thoughts. His shrug is met with another grin, and she nods her head happily afterward. "The summers here are much more mild than some others.. we might find some more migrating creatures if we look hard enough.. maybe." Ah, and optimistic, too.
Of Course! Ojalo smiles at her with a nod. "Perhaps." Is soon leaked out, head shaking afterwards as if to disagree. "No, not perhaps. We will." He brings himself to a confident stance. "Whether it be one, or even two; so long as we hold our hopes high we shall find what we seek." With a stomp of a hoof he bellows to reassure himself.
