Sloping Gradient
================================================================================
A wide, rocky path leading down from the mesa to the greener foothills of the lowlands, sprigs of various plants and brush line the less-traveled edges of the pass. The gravelly dirt of the grade shows vague hints of various creature's pawprints, though most of them are obscured by the occasional breeze of wind rushing through the mountain. The slope curves gently with an equally smooth downgrade, making for an easy walk up or down the mountain. A crevice in the side of the mountain can be seen - if you're slender enough, you may be able to slip inside.

Scorch, cougress
Kasim, cougar
================================================================================
An unfamiliar cougress slows down in her vagrant meandering as her nose picks up a thick, stratified swath of diverse cougar scents. Had she stumbled across a clan of cougars? She had thought it myth ... her kind are not known to be social. She marvels and wonders, sniffing the ground intensely. She quivers a bit in nervous excitement as her nose identifies at least a dozen different cougar scents, and none of them laden with the sour sweat of stress from violent contest. Many of the scents were, in fact, relaxed and confident ... the young adult cougress' excitement grows at this prospect. Would they welcome her? She lifts her head and peers about, her tail snaking excitedly at the prospect.
Kasim can be found doing what he's been doing lately for what feels like forever; just simply taking a walk and observing all that there is to see around him. He hasn't really had much to do lately, what with the cubs growing up each day he really hasn't had much to do lately. His small depression has gotten a bit better, but he still finds himself thinking about Maulisho every now and then. Maybe he just needs to talk to someone... anyone.
Scorch has only heard of Cougar tribes in myth and lore. Though cougars do tend to not be social, some yearn to be -- Scorch's mother had been, and so she had been raised with romanticized notions of what a Cougar tribe would be like to live in. The cougress reflects deeply as she stands out in the open in a clearing on the slope. Of course, she would need to be careful ... a loner would not stand a chance against an organized tribe ... but more than that, her heart begins to race with the prospect of a tribe of friends she could join and be a part of, and she does not wish to doom herself away from that possibility by making a bad first impression. She mrrowls out to potential hidden places, keeping herself out in the open, hoping she might be warmly greeted ... or at least non-hostilely ...
Kasim had never heard of cougars who stay together in a tribe before he came into contact with Amaranth. Now, it's what he considers his home. He never really seems to get tired of it either, as he's been prowling up and down the lands lately just taking in the sights. That, or he's just trying to find a better way to spend his time just laying in the sun. Quite suddenly though, Kasim snaps out of his daydream like state as he hears the small mrrowling coming from somewhere close to him. Someone near him? Curious, but on guard, Kasim gives a few small mrrowls back in a small greeting. Not exactly friendly, but he doesn't know who's out there.
Scorch feels increasingly pensive the longer she waits. She does not move, though. Would she be welcomed? Would she be attacked? She strains her ears and tries to subdue her breathing despite her racing heart, listening for signs of anyone approaching.
Hmm... no reply. Maybe he just is hearing things out here... No that can't be it. He's bored, not insane. After all, he's not /that/ old yet. And no, he's totally /not/ in denaial, thank you very much! Hesitating a bit, Kasim decides to slowly and carfully move towards the sound he heard, making sure to keep his guard up just incase someone was trying to do something funny.
Scorch's attention is drawn to an approaching sound. Her heart races and thrumps. She calls out again, but not as bold nor sure of herself as the first time. "Hello!?"
Kasim's ears perk up quickly at the sound of the greeting, relaxing his muscles just a bit. "Hello!" he calls back, moving towards the source of the mystery voice again. Sounded like a female and, judging by the scent in the air, it's a cougaress. Not a scent he's familiar with though...
Scorch, indeed, does not smell like any of the resident cougresses. In fact, she's starting to smell a bit terrified, but she anchors herself in place as the male cougar comes into view. 'OMG, whatamIdoing!' her mind suddenly starts bellowing at herself. Something stronger keeps her from flighting, though, and she remains where she is as the male approaches. "Mynameisscorch!" she mrrowls, unable to hide the fear in her voice. "Whatisthisplace?"
Kasim blinks in mild surprise when he sees a cougaress standing there whom he's never seen before... and is apparently very terrified of him. First impressions just aren't his thing, apparently. "Hey hey! Take it easy," Kasim calls over to the cougaress in as soothing a tone as he can muster. Must be a wanderer if she's so scared of walking into Amaranth terriroty. "I'm not going to hurt you. Just calm down, ok?"
Scorch crouches a bit submissively, like a scared cub. "I ... I'msorr ... I'm sorry ..." she manages to get out. "What ... what is this place?" she asks, panting. Her pelt twitches throughout her body from her nervousness. "I ... smell so many here ... so many of our kind ... is ... is this ... is this one of the tribes of lore ...?" she asks.
Why is it that he always gets the scared ones? Even the first time he met Maul, she almost ran away from him since she was so scared to see a male. Maybe this cougaress just has a fear for males too? "Hey, take it easy, I'm not going to hurt you," he tries again, taking a seat to try and show he's no threat. What she says next, though, perks his interest. "Tribes of what? This place is home to the Amaranth tribe."
Scorch forces herself to look up. "I'm ... sorry ... I'm ... I've heard of tribes ... but ... only in story, in rumor ... I didn't even think one existed ... the only cougars I have known, have lived as most of our kind do ... solitary, distrustful of each other, keeping to themselves ..." she mrrowls. "Does your ... does the tribe accept new members?" she asks, almost pleadingly.
Certainly a frightful little one, isn't she? Maybe she's just had a rough life or something. Not really his place to ask though. "Just take it easy, alright?" Kasim repeats, smiling a friendly smile at her. "My name is Kasim. We do accept members but I'm not the one who has that authority".
Scorch pushes herself to get closer to the male, daintily sniffing from a couple feet away at first, keeping her neck stretched out, keeping herself intentionally a bit vulnerable to hopefully keep quashed any notion she might be a threat. "I would like to meet the others ... who could tell me what I must do ... to earn membership," she says. "I am pleased you are so kind." After drawing in his scent to 'learn' him, she stretches her neck out just in front of and below the male's fiercesome set of fangs to allow herself to be sniffed over as well, should he so desire.
He'd sure like to help her find all the others so she could be in a more comfortable area... if he only knew where all he others were. It's been a little bit since he's ventured back into the main area where the tribe is, but he's sure he could find it again. However, Kein might not exactly like him strolling in with a new and unknown cougaress. "I'd be glad to have you meet the others, but I think you should first meet the Chieftan before you go in any further into Amaranth." After all, Kein has a tendancy to not be so kind to animals he doesn't know, and rightfully so. "But if you wait out here for a few days, I'm sure I can track him down and bring him out here for you."
Scorch nods. The cougress strikes a submissive posture as she slides in closer to the male, rubbing the back of her neck along one of his forelegs. "I am ever so grateful ... I can hardly believe this is real ... a real, actual tribe, not just a story or rumor of one!" she purrs almost cub-like. She's gone from scaredy-cub to ... now something else!
At least she isn't shaking from being terrified of him anymore. Seriously, is he /really/ that scary looking? All he's ever done is try to be nice to others! Maybe he's just drawn to these situations? Who knows... Kasim chuckles a bit when Scorch starts to purr a bit, glad she's at least calm now. "Heh, just wait out here for a bit and I'll try and find Kein for you," he says to her, getting to his paws and moving to head out. "Until then, just take it easy out here, ok?" he tells her, adding a friendly smile.
Scorch sits herself down, then walks her front paws into a lay, looking after the male. He no longer looks scary, though he is the very same cat she had felt so afraid of just a few minutes prior. In fact, now he looks kind of ... handsome! Thankfully, a cougar's golden pelt is not prone to betraying an embarrassing blush ...
