The Wooded Terrain
Kein, Nyssa
Stillness. The sun has only partially set behind the mountain, and fleeting traces of light cast long, sharp shadows on the lingering snow below. It is that strange moment of quiet, the same that appears just before dawn, when the changing of the guard has yet to occur. The creatures of the day have settled, but the creatures of the night have no yet stirred. It is in this limbo that she finds herself now, no deeper into Amaranth's territory than she was the other day. Nyssa sits with her head bowed almost to her chest, and her ears upright and forward. The cougar is still, feeling the gentle eddies of the wind as it brushes her cheek and whispers something inaudible to her. She does not move, seeming for all the world as a statue, when suddenly with a rush of air she rises to her paws, gasping as her breath is taken from her. Her face, saddened, looks up to the twilight sky, and softly does she call to the winking stars, "No... not yet." And then it is quiet again.
Kein is silent as he walks along, out so far from his den even this late at night thanks to a couple of particularly hungry daughters and a lack of prey within his borders today. Wherever the snow is helping them to hide, he has not found them. Not today. His stalking is interrupted, though, as he catches just the faintest hint of a female's voice. He can't make out any words, and after a brief moment, he begins walking again. Now, he does not attempt to be so quiet, nor does he attempt to avoid the female.
"You always go so early; I never know what you want," Nyssa says, her voice growing just a little louder as she takes her eyes away from the sky and turns to pace in a small circle. She's not angry, far from it, in fact, but she is just a little frustrated. She can't get angry at her Guide, but sometimes... sometimes, "I just wish you would tell me more," the female sighs, stopping for a moment. She looks down at her paws, blinks slowly, and then begins to wash her right fore paw. Then. Mid-preen, she looks up to see the approaching male, and hesitates. She listens. Nothing. Did he come seeking her out, or is he 'simply passing by.' Nyssa nods her head, and calls gently, "Good evening, Chieftain."
As Kein continues to approach her, Nyssa's words become a little clearer, and he responds by flicking his ears backwards. Just as he has decided that maybe he /should/ avoid her, that whatever she is speaking about is a private matter, it becomes too late, and he has been noticed. "Nyssa." His tone is every bit as polite as the other day, but the brevity of his greeting would leave something to be desired if one were expecting a more friendly greeting.
She tilts her ears forward just a bit, inclining her head as a second silent greeting to the chieftain. For a time she says nothing, feeling only the disruption around them with all of her worldly being, yet she does not speak on it. Not to Kein; he would not understand, or, if he did, he would not appreciate it coming from her. Instead, she lets her green eyes fall to the snow before his paws and bows her head. "I hope the evening finds you well. I'm sorry to have disturbed you." As if someone could be disturbed walking, not mentioning the fact that she was near meditating on her life.
"Seems to me like I'm the one disturbing you." For all that Kein is socially inept, he is not prone to anger when anger is not due. In fact, if anything... "No. /I'm/ sorry. I'll go." Kein doesn't wait for a response before he moves to slip past her, circling her like he should have done when there was still a great deal of distance between them. Awkward much?
Nyssa's eyes stay focused on that indent in the snow where his paws once were, trying to come up with something to say to him but finding herself unable as he makes his way past her. Somehow, she knows that there is something that needs to be done here in Amaranth, and Kein has something to do with it. Her Guide is silent, and while she knows that it is not in their nature to be cruel, she cannot help but be upset... "Please, don't!" The words hang in the air between the two cougars for mere moments, but as soon as they are out of her mouth she begins to regret them. Nyssa turns to bring Kein back into view, willing the worry lines from her face and managing to give him a gentle smile. But... what now?
Kein is not a stranger to being asked to stop once he has started to leave, and he obliges. He turns, without hesitation, to face Nyssa, though he can't manage to mimic her smile, and it does not take a long period of silence before he asks, simply, "Yes?" Although he is not particularly reluctant to stay, he's no better for silent companionship than he is for idle small talk.
Again, she is drawn to the red lines on his fur, but only for a moment before his voice breaks through her thoughts. Yes? What did she want to say? Nyssa shakes her head, "I'm sorry." A chieftain should not feel so ill at ease in his own territory, and though she wonders if her presence is the cause she just cannot leave. Not yet. "When you're ready, come and find me." That said, she turns and moves back to the lake, though her paws want to point her to the mountain. As she moves off, she dips her head and whispers across his foreleg, "Please," hoping the night air will bring that plea to Kein's ears.
Kein watches after Nyssa as she abruptly leaves, after asking him to seek her out. As much as her straightforwardness was a breath of fresh air, the other day, he is almost entirely at home being left entirely confused by a female. As such, before she can get too far away, he calls out to her, "Tomorrow." It's not much of a promise, but it's there. He won't leave her waiting too long. However, there are still mouths to feed, yet tonight, and curiosity is not his largest downfall. He won't be forced to trouble himself too much with thinking over what she might have to say to him.
