Setting: Maple Glade
Characters: Miakoda, Lazuli Beta Female / Sanguine, Male Fox
An autumn morning. Cool and breezy. Miakoda's presence is made obvious by the soft sound of shuffling leaves as she steps through and upon them. Apparently, the female wolf is making no attempt at being stealthily sneaky, and her gait is one of leisure. She's only walking. With no prey in sight and no real need to keep to the shadows, Mia enjoys the what seems to be fair day by traversing the pack lands, and she looks quite cheerful as she moves through the maple glade, approaching the clearing. She turns her head up to peer through the branches of trees overhead, inhaling the musky scents of autumn.
Unsubtle. Sanguine can be described with many adjectives, and possesses many redeemable qualities, but when he's tired and stressed they tend to fly out the proverbial window at a fast pace. Subtly is usually the first to go. Sanguine stomps through the crackling leaves, leaving an impressive (for a fox) trail of scattered and broken foliage behind him as he stalks through the undergrowth. He pays little mind to his scent, either, and even has his head down- not looking out around him. He barely stops to smell any strange scents as he moves on a random bee-line through the maple glade.
Hmm, someone else is making much more of a racket than herself... Not one to be outdone, Miakoda stops with a hearty crunch on a dried brown leaf and lifts both hear head and ears the scan the area. She takes not of the scent before she catches sight of the lupine, and the aroma of fox fills her nose with her next inhale. A fox? Unusual that such a creature would be so obvious and, as she thinks back, she can't remember ever getting a good look at one. Well now's her chance! She follows the scent until she gets a glimpse of fur. Well somebody's in a hurry. "Hey!" Hmm. That wasn't very eloquent, was it? "..Er...hello?"
Sanguine's ears completely miss the sound of Miakoda's pawstep on the dried leaves. However, the direct call to him could not be ignored- the noise works to jar him out of his state. He spends a moment staring at the wolf, before his mind and his body rejoin into one. "Huh?" is his response; the first thing to leap into his mind. Unsubtle. "I mean, uh. Yeah. Hi." His body language becomes slightly cautious. It IS a wolf, after all. "Whaddaya want?"
"Hello," Miakoda repeats without really meaning to. "I didn't mean to startle you.." Did she startle him? Thinking of it, she can't really tell, but the phrase is easily said, as if she's had to make such an apology many times before. Adopting a more casual stance, she lowers her head a bit and allows her tail to relax, offering the fox a small smile. "You're a fox, correct?" .. Durr. Realizing the idiocy of the question, she quickly adds, "Well of course you are! I've only never ... had the pleasure of seeing one of your kind up close," she says as she meanders nearer with all the curiosity of a pup. "You're always so secretive."
Sanguine gives a series of rapid blinks, as though attempting to digest far too much information in a short amount of time. His answers to the wolf's various questions seem to blur together, as though he didn't (or couldn't) make the effort to separate them. "Fox? Me? Yes. Of course. Thank you. Not a problem, no, not at all. And hey- not a problem! Pleasure to meet you and all that. Please don't eat me, considering you can probably put my whole head into your mouth or something. Can you really do that? And we're not secretive- we're cautious. Don't want to get eaten and all. By the way the head thing's neat, but morbid."
Miakoda owlishly stares at the fox for a moment, pausing in her approach as he answers. The urge to laugh is far too strong to resist, and so .. she doesn't. Granted, it isn't a boisterous sound, but her chuckle is warm with mirth regardless. "I don't know if I could get your whole head in my mouth," she says as she circles around him, apparently wanting to get the whole 360 view of what a fox is. "I've never tried such a thing! And...I don't think I have mind to now," she adds as she stops at his front. "Besides, as cautious as you foxes seem to be, I doubt I'd ever see another one to give it a try. And I'd never try to eat someone who was kind enough to spare me a hello." ... "Unless you were a hare," she admits honestly.
Sanguine doesn't seem to react very much to the laughing, although he does shut up for a moment. Then, as you begin to circle him, he visibly grows a little uneasy. Not much- just a little. Again, probably the head thing. "That DOES sound just like what someone who could fit my whole head in their mouth would say!" declares Sanguine, although he does start adding pauses after his sentences. Perhaps he's just copying you? "I'm not a hare," he answers, "and take your time- look all you want. Lookie. No touchie." He waves a paw in an absent, vague gesture which could mean anything.
"Aww, but you seem so /soft/," Miakoda says with a grin that's a little too toothy, though perhaps she's only joking? Surely she doesn't seem the type to suddenly attack with morbid intentions! .. Right? Smirking now, she falls back onto her haunches and gives a slow nod. "Alright, alright. I can respect that. I wouldn't want to be touched by a .... bear or anything equally as bigger than myself," she says. "What is your name? Oy, I'm sorry. Curiosity's no excuse for a lack of manners! I'm Miakoda, Beta of the Lazuli pack."
"Sanguine!" the fox replies immediately, although the grin you give him is obviously not lost on the fox. "Great to meetcha. Especially since, well, you know. If I was you, well, you'd have all the bear-ness that would scare you, right? I mean- YOU you, not ME you, that is to say..." the fox pauses for a moment, as though straightening out his thoughts. "Uhh- yes. I think you understand. Beta, eh? Beta? That's impressive. Got some credentials. Cre-dent-ials. Me, meh. Fox. What've I got? Well, a head that's NOT getting swallowed, thankyouverymuch. Not now or ever. Do I really look soft? Gotta work on that then."
"Sanguine. Nice to meet you, too," she says in return, dipping her head and smirking, again looking amused by all that the fox says. "Well, Sanguine, I wouldn't be too down about not having .. er, credentials," she says as she settles back onto her haunches. "Foxes don't have packs, do they? Well, being alive is a credential in itself, isn't it? You're alive, and not all foxes can say the same. So, you're ahead of most," she says good-naturedly and with a grin. "And yes, you look soft, just like my pups. You're fuzzy like them.." And who can resist the urge to nuzzle on such a fuzzy looking creature? Well, Miakoda can, which is good for the both of them. "Though I'm sure you're a very tough and formidable fox on the inside."
Sanguine shakes his head a few times. "Packs? Nope. Got no packs. Nothing like that. We're free spirits! Which is another way of saying, 'Gunna eatcha!'. Strangely, we don't get eaten that much. Dunno why. Probably the smell." He pauses, letting you talk, then nods. "Entirely possible. I seem to be alive now. This is good. It's a cred', I guess. Sure. Why not." He nods. "Eh, well, as you said. I don't think I'm tough, but hey- I haven't been killed yet. Just gotta, you know, keep at it. Haven't died once yet, to my knowledge." He flicks his tail indignantly. "I may be soft, but. But. Uh, yeah. Ok. I'm soft. I admit it."
Miakoda laughs again and nods her head. "Glad you admit to your softness, and I admire your courage to be a free spirit. I was one once. Didn't like it at all and was very happy to have a pack in the end. Don't you get lonely?" she asks with a light twist of her head. "Wandering about on your own all the time with no one to talk to? Or to share your sorrows with? Or to experience joy with?" asks the curious wolf. And then, as a very random side thought, her ears lifts as if remembering something. "Do you have any pups?" she asks, not knowing the correct term for a fox kit. "Because if you by chance lost one, we may have found it."
Sanguine ponders that, nodding his head. "Recovering free spirit! I see. Good, good. Safety in numbers and all that. Very good. Very useful. Lonely? Nah. There's plenty of strange folk to talk to, when they're not trying to devour me. Even a few foxes, which helps. Sorrows and joys and all that are best kept inside- except for that one joy." Again, with the absent paw-wave. "You know the one. That one's best shared." He regards your question curiously. "Nope. No kits. At least, none that I know of. Can't discount the possibility, but no. Pretty sure it's not mine. Is it ok? What are you gunna do with it?"
"Inside?" questions Miakoda. "It's ... difficult for me to keep my emotions inside. I may be able to for a while, but eventually I share them with my pack mates or a single pack mate. They're good to lean on," she says with a fond smile, though she soon shakes away her thoughts and focuses on the fox kit question. What to do with it? "I don't know. Eat it, eventually..." she says in an airy tone, and she keeps up her act for a moment or so before a grin breaks through. "I'm joking!" she assures, waving a paw dismissively. "Well, at the moment, one pack member has declared herself .. guardian of it," she says with a slightly wrinkled nose. "Though, come to think of it, she might have misplaced it," spoken in a lightly humored tone.
Sanguine seems to accept the wolf's first answer with an unconcerned air, as though they were discussing eating a pinecone. He blinks at the joke. "Right- joke. Of course! Of course. Silly me." He ponders that, tilting his head to one side. "Well, that is odd. Going to add it to your 'wolf' collective, then? Your pack? How odd! A fox that wants to be a wolf. How very, very odd. Not unheard of, I guess- they say we foxes are a strange bunch. But still, highly rare." He stretches for a moment, then sits again. "Well, if you've lost it, it'll turn up again eventually. Kinda like how you bury some food and forget where. You eventually remember, although you're usually digging at that spot to bury something else- so it defeats the purpose! Woe is life."
Miakoda smirks and turns back an ear. "In truth, I don't hope that it does return," she says with a flip of her tail. "I agree with you. It /is/ odd for a fox to be in a wolf's pack, and Odd isn't what I wish my pack to be known for." She exhales a breath before glancing over her shoulder. "I can't say that I've ever buried my food.." she admits while looking back at him, half-smirking. "We wolves aren't ... the burying sort. We pretty much eat what's in front of us and leave storing to the squirrels." Chuckling, she stands up now. "Fox Sanguine, it was a pleasure meeting you, but I feel it's time for me to return to my pack. Again, I can't stand being without them for too long," said with a grin. "But I hope that this isn't the last time we cross paths. I still have plenty of questions that only a fox would have the answer to."
Sanguine puffs out his chest for a moment, taking in a deep breath of air then letting it go. "We always have answers- it's the questions that elude us!" The fox stands up as you go to leave, nodding his head. "Oh, yes. I'm hopeful we can cross paths again. You didn't eat me, I didn't eat you, everything worked out great. See you around! If you see any bears, just pretend to be me talking to you during this last conversation- it works, I promise you!"
Miakoda laughs whole-heartedly. "I'll keep that in mind," she says in-between giggles. "Though hopefully, bears will elude me just as questions elude you!" She winks before backing up to turn. "Enjoy your stay in the forest, however long you linger on Lazuli lands. I know our borders mean little to you, but .. enjoy, anyway." With one last grin, the female wolf bobs her head, then departs into the thicker foliage of the woods.
