Kein - Male Cougar
Thrash - Male Cougar
- Snowy Highlands -
It has been a tiresome and emotional couple of days for Kein. With anger and resentment still driving him, his days are long, as he is doing everything within his power to keep from subjecting Nyssa or his very young cubs to that. Finally, with the spring sun threatening to disappear behind the horizon, Kein is returning to the northern part of his territory. His legs feel heavy as he walks, burdened with the weight of his years and the long hours spent hunting, patrolling, and anything else he could think of to work off his anger. He drags with him a yearling ram, a fair enough catch that will certainly keep Amaranth's newest nursing mother satisfied for a time.
It has been a long and hard decision, but Thrash has finally came to it. It was for the best not only for him, but most likely for the Amaranth as well. No longer is he tossing and turning at night to wrestle with the idea. As he spies Kein ambling through the territory, he lets out a loud chuff and ambles over as he rises up from a sprawled out perch on a large stone near by. "Hey." He calls out as his ears lift upwards upon his head. "Need help dragging that back? You look tired."
With the smell of blood and meat in his nose, it is not until Thrash announces himself that Kein is aware of his presence. The chieftain responds by dropping his catch to look in Thrash's direction. With a flick of his tail and one protective paw placed over his catch, an action that is little more than instinct, he responds, "I am fine, Thrash." Tired, sure, but that part he remembers well enough from both of his previous litters. Granted, his reasons for being tired are a little different, this time around, but he was still prepared for it, to say the least.
"Alright then." Thrash says with a shrug of his shoulders upwards, not looking too interested in the meal as it is. "So, anyways, I'm sorry to hear that you've been having a pretty rough time here, but congrats on the litter." He says as his tail curls about his strong haunches, with the tip only giving a slight twitch here and there. Tilting his head to one side, he studies the older cougar for a moment, then says, "Spring is here and I feel that it is best that I leave the Amaranth and start my own family away from your lands. Your daughter and I are not going to ever work out and I think I've finally come to accept that, so we... talked and we ended things mutually this time."
Kein does not respond immediately. Given his social ineptitude, but knowing that this is no bad thing that Thrash is proposing, it takes him a while to decide on an appropriate response. Finally, he manages, "I think that's a wise choice, Thrash." Perhaps Thrash is no longer the foolish adolescent who stumbled into the territory. It doesn't make Kein want him here any more than he would have otherwise. Indeed, quite the opposite. He can respect the other male, though, and he is certainly grateful that it won't come to a fight. While he remains confident in his own abilities, he is no longer a foolish youth either, and his energy is better put to feeding the newest members of his family.
"Yeah, so.. I'm taking Tantallon, Nyana and Shanira with me." Thrash says as he rocks his shoulders back in a bit of a flex. "The four of us are going to probably head towards the Ute pack from where Tantallon was raised and stay probably somewhere in the middle of here and there, that way if you need me for anything, I can be easily a day or so travel." He takes in a deep breath. "And I'm serious about that, if you -need- me, then I want you to seek me out, send a sparrow or something. You're the closest that I ever had as a father and I love you, and I appreciate everything you've done for me." He says with a small grin on his face. "OK?"
"You needn't worry about that." That statement, at least, comes easily enough from Kein. "Trust me. You'll have enough to worry about, and I can take care of my own." It is, in no way, cruelty or a lack of confidence that causes Kein to say this. He was once in Thrash's place, though, and there are days, more and more of them, when he wishes he'd have denied that request to return to Amaranth, when he was much younger and it seemed he had all the energy in the world to take care of those in his sight /and/ those living days away. When he didn't know all of the heartaches that would result from his return.
"Right, because you've done a marvelous job up until now." Thrash says with a long stretch of his body, claws flexing into the ground, then says, "Here's some advice for you, Kein, whether you take it or not. You're no spring chicken anymore and anytime someone can walk in here, take what is yours and end everything that you have around here." He says with a sniff of the air. "You need to stop pushing everyone away from you and stick your pride somewhere else, because it's no big deal to ask for help once in awhile. If I got put into a situation where I needed help, I'd want to know that I could depend on those who care about me to come to my side. The old days of Amaranth are over, Kein. You need to come to terms with that and realize that a brand new day is here. You can't carry the world on your shoulders anymore, give someone else a chance to lighten the load." He pauses, then shrugs his shoulders, starting off. "Catch you in the next life, Kein, I'll send my son to come woo your daughter when he gets older." He says with an amused laugh as he walks.
"I didn't hear many complaints from you when it was you who needed my protection. I may not be as young as you or others like you, but I've earned the scars I wear, and I've learned from each of them. So I have some advice for you. Don't return, Thrash. And don't send your sons either. We don't play well together. We're not meant to." Kein says all of this without bothering to follow after Thrash. He only stands there and watches as Thrash departs, at least until the other male is out of sight, before continuing to drag his prey toward the north.
