Miel and Taima of the Dorado herd, and
Hollyhock, a Yellowtail Warbler (NPC)
---
*twichety twichety twichety twich* She calls out to anyone who can hear. Then the Common Yellowtail Warbler shouts, "Aiee, help! Need help! Calling for help! Someone nice and friendly! Preferably cute and sweet! Help?! No biting and eating me, please!" Hollyhock flaps her wings fiercely to get away from being chased. She doesn't look back but if one does look to see her, they will notice nothing is chasing her now.
Miel is near the edge of the herd, looking around - and she turns her head at the flash of motion, her ears perking. It's just a bird, though; not who she was looking for. And being as exciteable as birds are prone to be, apparently, since there's nothing visible coming after her. The filly snorts, and gives her mane a shake.
Taima was peacefully grazing when her ears twitched to the sound of shouting in the distance and she raised her head back up, trying to pinpoint the noise. She scraps a hoof when she finally picks out the word 'help', tensing a little until she sees the bird. Her attention naturally goes behind the bird, looking for the source of the problem but when nothing follows she moves, stepping to intercept the bird's path "Hello?" there's more curiosity than concern but concern there is.
Hollyhock looks down as her wings falter and tense. She begins a dive for a few seconds to lower herself closer to the horse. "Hello! Hello. I'm being chased by crows." She closes her eyes for a moment, "Are they behind me? Two tail feathers were already clipped. I'm scared to look." But in those few seconds, she gets closer to Miel first and then Taima. "Woah! I'm sorry. So sorry." She pushes her wings out far to slow her flying down. Eyeing a bush, she does her best to land on it without tumbling.
Miel glances back along the bird's course, and snorts. "There's nothing there," she says. "The crows must have turned back." How long ago? Possibly quite a while. The bird seems terrified, not sensible. Well, there's cetainly no harm in having a little bird perching around here, and it might turn out to be interesting. She lowers her head, taking a mouthful of grass while keeping an eye on the warbler and Taima.
Taima's muscles relax again. Crows are certainly nothing to worry about for a horse. Non-existent crows are even less of a worry. She nods to Miel's words, watching the little bird flutter about and land "Yes, you're fine. Try and calm down, there's no crows in sight"
Hollyhock lands at the same time she croons her neck to look behind her, falling through into the bushes. "Sh-warkin-a-murr." feeling her mouth filled with leaves. She spits it out before she wobbles out from the bushes. "Well I really should have looked behind me. But I was too scared that if I did, I'd be too terrified to fly anymore." She takes long deep breathes now, "Okay, better now. I'm Hollyhock." She jumps a few times to stand between the two horses.
Miel's tail flicks to take care of a fly, and she chews on the grass calmly. "No good escaping the wolves if you run off the cliff," she says, then smiles. There's something rather amusing about a little bird next to the big horses. "I'm Miel," she replies.
Taima lowers her nose down towards the little bird, oh so tiny little thing "Miel has a point and when you stop hearing the predator it's time to see where it's got to" she doesn't get her nose too close, she's almost afraid that if she touches the bird she'll squish it or something "And I'm Taima" she raises her head back up again "Have a rest, I don't think the crows are coming back"
Hollyhock nods several times, "I will next time. I just got caught up in the shouting for help too." She takes a few deep breaths. "Well I was coming in from the south. The smoke was bad in this one area. I saw several birds avoid the heat coming up. Trees were near to ash." Dramatically she hides her face with her right wing. "The horror! Oh, the horror!" Peeking out from under the wing is the tip of her beak, "I saw more fleeing and scittering away. And so were the other birds."
Miel's ear flicks, listening. More fires? Or at least more of the same. "Might start to get crowded around here," she murmurs, and snorts softly.
Taima's ears flatted back and she looks uneasy all over again, complete with an uncomfortable glance to Miel after she hears the murmur. She tries to focus back on the bird though, silent for a minute while she tries to sift through a little panic and concern for family to find the right questions "Do you know if the fire's still going?...Or spreading?"
Hollyhock puts down her wing and stares at Miel first and then Taima. "Well, I just need to find a tall branch to perch on to keep from the crowding... I think." She brings her twichety twichety song as she tries to recall the fire. "There is a small redness where several trees fell on top of each other. Two spots of that. There are trickles of fire at the edges slowly consuming the leaves and grass." She hops about with her wings half way open, "I hope it rains soon! I hope! I hope.. You want to hope with me? Rain squishes fire!"
Miel chuckles softly at the bird's reply to her. "We will see what happens." It's not so much the birds that concern her, as the other horses or small animals. Grass is plentiful, here, but not limitless. She considers on the rest of what Hollyhock says, but she doesn't know too much about fire - especially not in forests. She's seen the grassland sort, but only from a distance - and they seem a rather different creature than this one being described. "Rain is good," she replies - but the seasons are entering summer now, when the grasses grow parched from the sunlight.
Taima also hasn't stood around to study fire in great detail but it doesn't sound good to her and she struggles to picture it without placing the image on bits of her home and wondering just what's on fire "Yes...I really wish for rain" she adds quietly before carrying on to the even more important question to her "Did you see any horses running from the fire?"
Hollyhock flaps her wings to gain flight just enough that she can move around the horses heads, "Yes, just a few that I saw. Many were the mangy howling ones. Not the wolves. Taught right away not to go near them. Same with the cougars. But the ones I saw were horses that were upset with fear. The looked so wild and scary." Then she realizes she is talking to wild horses. "Ummm..." Two wing flaps to get her a few feet from the horses. "I don't mean to offend you. Promise. They weren't like the birds though. The fumes that caught them off guard made them frenzy."
Miel listens, and snorts softly. "You didn't look so good yourself, a few moments ago," is her only response to the bit about the horses being wild. She glances to Taima, and says, "If they're still running, they'll likely be all right. Even in terror, no horse is stupid enough to run toward the fire instead of away."
Taima tries to think rather than panic, her tail flicking uncomfortably. She nods awkwardly to Hollyhock "It's fine...thank you" she glances back to Miel and tries to smile at the reassurance though it comes out a little forced "True, yes...they're probably somewhere safe by now" she looks around, attempting to hide the worry as she shifts her hooves "I should go and find my sister, tell her what's going on"
Hollyhock flies a little closer to Miel. "I was! I was scared! Is that was wild looks like? Scared?" She stills a wing for a moment to wiggle the edge to Taima, "Welcome!" A few little whistles she makes before she drops to the grass. "If you like, I can go back there. I'll be stealthy! Seems your friend is a tad upset or something." bobbing her head up and down. "When I get to the trees, I'll hop a lot. Chat with the others I see, the nice others. Plus, give me a chance to see where other Warblers are. Ya know, I'm not getting any younger!" Teehee.
Miel nods, watching Taima as she retreats, and then looks up to Hollyhock again. "Yes. Wild is one sort of scared." She sighs. "If you can find out more about the other horses there, I know Taima would appreciate it," she says. "She has family there." The filly hmms. "And I'd like to know what's going on with the fire, too." It might be more of a threat to them here than she'd thought before - an entire month, and yet it still seems recent to this warbler with a bird's attention span. "Good luck with keeping safe... and with finding those other warblers."
Hollyhock stands straight and tall, "Aye, aye. First, I need some water! Where can I take a quick dip and drink. Need some yummy food too." She takes small steps in a circle as if to dizzy herself. Not possible. Can't be done to Hollyhock. "Then I'll be off back to that fire. It will take a few days if I go stealthy. Hope you don't mind. Plus the chatting part. Yeah, a few days there. But if you so anymore crows, tell them to go away so they don't eat me?"
"I'll keep an eye out for crows," Miel says. Not that she expects they'd listen - but it's useful enough to have an eye in the sky that she might try. "Good flying!"
"Thanks! Take care!" The warbler calls out. Hollyhock begins her take off, beating her wings rapidly. One wing seems a little stuck then it straightens her out. The air lifts her up and up before she soars over towards the river.
