Inteus - Male Wolf
Malia - Female Wolf
- Tranquil Pond -
It's a companionable sort of silence, the noise, or lack thereof, that has accompanied them for most of the way here. The day is warm enough that Inteus is quite content to focus on traveling and breathing, and not worry about idle conversation to fill the time. But with the distance they have traveled, it should come as no surprise to his companion that the moment he spots the body of water that he has been searching for, following the distinctive scents of aquatic plants and rotting, wet wood, that he turns to head directly toward it at a faster pace, eager for some water to calm his thirst. Only once he has managed to soothe his rapidly drying throat does he say anything. "I told you I could find water from miles away." So there!
Inteus' companion is just as content to keep the chitchat to a minimum as they cross the heat-baked prairie, aside from the occasionally nagging inquiry ("Are you sure we're going the right way?") as the pair of wolves generally head for the looming mountain to the west. After all, where there's snow caps, there's likely water to be found nearby. Malia calmly continues at her current pace, not bothering to make a final dash for the pond - after all, it will surely only make her thirstier. As she draws up beside the male, she dips her head for a drink, but not before shaking out some of the accumulated desert dust making her already off-white fur appear even dirtier.
At least Inteus does not have to worry about a little bit of dust making him look dirty, so the bits that settle on his fur do not trouble him. The bits the settle on his tongue and in his nostrils, on the other paw... After a brief fit of sneezing, Inteus responds with a growl that, at least, is more playful that angry. "I should just shove you into that pond. You'd get real clean, then." It is but an idle threat, though, since he draws a step nearer the water again only to take another brief drink in order to rid himself of the tastes of sand and dead plants. That done, he begins to look around, although without moving much.
Malia feigns ignorance at her companion's condition while she laps at the cool water's surface, only turning her head to glance sidelong at the male at the sound of his growl. "Try it," she retorts in a coolly combative tone; though the pair are far from being at each other's throats, there's a clear underlying presence of mutual competition nonetheless. "So, where shall we make our new home, then? I suppose we should scout the area, first..." she trails off, scenting lightly at the air for signs of nearby inhabitants, lupine or otherwise.
Inteus doesn't respond immediately, instead peering off toward the south. There is not much here, that is certain, but there were the sounds that carried to them when they were on their way here, and Malia's suggestion of scouting is a good one, but he suspects he has something a bit different in mind, after the strain of traveling and hunting all on their own, without a pack to back them up. Not that they have suffered for it much, but it has still been a lot of boring, tedious work. "I'm sick of looking for a place to make a new home, Malia. I think it's time to start thinking about finding a home someone else has already made for us."
Malia's maw slowly spreads into a knowing smile, a cunning glimmer in her bronze-hued eyes. "Why, of course, Inteus," she murmurs in response, as though she had already come to a similar conclusion before he had put it into words. "But we will still need to scout," the yellow-tinged she-wolf insists, as though wanting to make it clear that her idea was still right. "After all, we can hardly just show up and expect an entire wolf pack to bow before our grandeur," she adds, only half-jokingly.
"Can't we? Well, maybe /you/ can't." Inteus is nothing if not proud, and given the natural competition between the two of them, the idea forming in his head causes him to wear a little grin as he looks at her. "How far apart do you think all that howling off in the distance was, hmm? It's not just one pack, I'm sure. And we should be getting close by now, shouldn't we?" So he doesn't spell out his idea, as ill-formed as it is currently, but rather draws hints in the direction he's thinking.
Malia begins to scan the pond's surroundings, from the plains to the south, to the mountain in the east, and finally the forests to the north. "We stand at the end of a river...perhaps the border between two packs," she murmurs, her own thoughts rolling in like clouds as she starts to build on the plan growing between them. "I'll follow the northern bank, you stay along the southern. I'm sure we will find our packs on either side," Malia concludes with a toothy, open-mouthed grin. Our. There's not even a question in her mind, now. "How shall we keep in touch, my dearest Inteus?"
It comes as no surprise to Inteus that she catches on quickly, and the male's own grin keeps. This, now... /this/ is going to be fun. "All you need to do is summon, and I'll come running. I could recognize your voice anywhere." Of course, it's easy to be romantic while simultaneously dreaming of crushing one's mate in the latest competition, particularly when it is so elaborate as this one promises to be, even with how little they have discussed it, relying instead of their ability to think alike.
Malia continues to wickedly grin, her creamy brush of a tail slowly swinging behind her. "Good luck, Inteus," she croons in a low voice, her tone implying that she thinks he'll be needing it if he's to keep up with her progress. "I will see you again soon. Be careful," the she-wolf murmurs as she leans in to briefly nuzzle under her companion's chin. She does care for his well-being, at least. It's certainly easier to challenge a rival alpha with a partner, after all.
The male of the duo is quick to return his mate's affection. Ah, at least their caring for each other is genuine, even if they express it in strange ways. Like, for example, how Inteus turns away from her as soon as she offers her farewell and, with absolutely no reservation about leaving his mate behind, begins to lope off to the south. After all, while that bit of luck might not hurt, getting a quick start on things certainly won't do any harm, either.
Malia shows no signs of offense at the male's sudden departure, as she's just as quickly turned on her heels seconds later, trotting away towards the treeline to the north with a wide smile on her maw. Good thing she chose the more shaded area to explore, in this summer heat.
