Another early morning. Niyt has been awake for hours already - what does she care if it's light out? - but as the day brightens, she sits atop a small hill with a view of the rolling grasslands beyond. She's not there for the view, of course - but the wind is strong here, and it ruffles through her fur in little gusts, and past her lifted nose casting for scents.
There's certainly at least one familiar scent on the wind. Lexus has been on the move a lot in the last week, searching the territory and beyond. He tracks his way back to the pack the check in and with hopes of food and some time to rest. He spots Niyt few a way off and barks a greeting as he walks.
Haze has taken to wandering a bit more in recent days -- after all, he can feel the stiffness of age creeping up in his bones, and who knows how much longer he'll be able to do something so simple as taking a morning walk. He's certainly learned his lessons about taking things for granted over his many years, and the latest occurrence is no exception. Catching the nearby scents of familiar packmates, he follows the breeze until it leads him to the others. "Any sign of the boy yet?" He recalls his last encounter with the young pup, and it pains his heart...the elder wolf has experienced far more loss than he would care for in his life, and he can't help but recall the loss of his own young ones as well.
Niyt calls a greeting back to Lexus, and the mournful tone of it probably answers Haze's question even before she shakes her head. "Nothing. Still. What the rain hasn't washed away, the wind has forgotten. So many things it says, and /nothing/ about what's important."
Lexus lopes slowly up the hill to join Niyt, his hope that maybe the pup had been found while he was looking quickly disappeared and he aims a comforting lick at one of Niyt's ears on the way past. He flops down on far away, lying on the ground and resting his tired legs "No sign at all, not so much as a faint whiff on the wind"
Haze's expression is grim, a tight frown on his maw at the young she-wolf's words, briefly glancing towards his younger half-brother when Lexus returns from his own search. "We'll find him, Niyt. Don't give up hope," he offers as sincerely as he can manage in the otherwise grave situation. "He's just a small pup, he couldn't have gone far."
Kachini perks her ears as she runs into the sweeping steppe. She looks around at the few that are there, her curiosity getting the better of her. A slow approach is made though and a little chuff in greeting not to startle anyone as she already knows from Helios that the pack's situation is getting heavy with woe.
Niyt lowers her head and bumps her muzzle against Lexus' shoulder, as he passes, and then sighs to Haze. "I'm not giving up, this time. But... where is there still to look? We've been searching for days." She shakes her head slowly, and then calls a greeting in return to Kachini.
Lexus rests on the ground, stretching out his front legs to loosen up the joints again "He's small, we can only hope we just haven't passed close enough to wherever he's hiding...I'll go out again later to look again" his eyes shift onto Kachini as she approaches but it's not until he hears Niyt's greeting that he wuffs one of his own at the unfamiliar wolf.
"Well...where might he have gone? Was there any place in particular that he had heard about recently, and maybe wanted to explore for himself?" Haze inquires of the boy's sister, as she's likely the closest to the lost pup of all those gathered and, as such, would know better than the rest. "He's getting to be about that age, after all..." The Viridian-born male was rather prone to running off on his own adventures (when he was probably far too young to be doing so) himself. He glances up at the sight of an unfamiliar female, though when the others greet her he presumes she's already become acquainted with some of the rest of the pack.
Kachini smiles as she wags her tail excitedly when hearing a return of her greeting. She steps a little close but slows down her tail. "Hello, Niyt." She looks around, "Where is little Anoki. I was wondering if he could paint mud on my face today." She isn't all sure who is missing just someone is. Her eyes flick one from to the other.
"If he's just been hiding this whole time, he's going to be in so much trouble," says Niyt, and shakes her head. Not that she isn't desperately hoping that's the case, instead of something worse having happened to him! She sighs to Haze. "He is that age, but..." Anoki? Leaving sick mama for this long? That just doesn't seem right to her. Well, fear and sorrow can make a wolf do strange things, but... She considers for a moment. "The waterfall, perhaps?" Their family had some fun times there, and perhaps Anoki went back to try to recapture them. It seems unlikely to her, but maybe. At Kachini's innocent question, she can't help cringing a little. "If we only knew."
Lexus rests his head onto his paws, looking quite tired. Niyt clearly knows the newly arrived wolf though so he doesn't consider her a threat and he explains to her question "Anoki is missing. We don't know if he's just wandered off or something else, we just can't find him...If you do see him please bring him home" he perks an ear to Niyt and makes a mental note to check the waterfall later.
"Has anyone checked there yet? It's at least another place to start looking... Might even find some clues on the way," Haze suggests, trying to be as helpful as possible for an old wolf. He considers telling the tale of how his own lost son returned, but hesitates yet; after all, Nakaiah was gone for several years before he showed up again much to their surprise, and he had been thought dead long enough for the mourning process to have occurred regardless.
Kachini blinks and stares. She blinks several more times as the information of Anoki going missing hits her. "He..." She starts looking around a bit frantically at first then stops. "Well, how can I help? I will go where you need me to to find him. Where have you gone looking?" She sighs and remembers her own brother leaving and her search for him. "I haven't seen him since the last time I saw him near the river washing off."
"I'll go check there," says Niyt in reply to Haze. "Zuphi can come with me, for a set of eyes." And for her safety, because she knows there are some who worry about her for her blindness. Not that she's concerned, herself - but neither does she mind a chance to take her tattered wolf along with her for a trip, even a worried one. She sighs to Kachini. "From here, most of the way toward the river. There's just so much land to cover... he could be tucked away just about anywhere. I've been calling, hoping he can hear, at least, but..."
Lexus shakes his head to Haze's question before adding his own search pattern "I've searched everywhere in the pack lands I could think of and started to search outside it to the south. Feels like I've been walking for the last three days, he has to be somewhere. He can't just have vanished without a trace" he pauses and glances back to Niyt "How's his mother doing?"
The waterfall, the river... Haze's aging frame is suddenly racked by a deep-set shudder as he remembers his fear of the water stemming from puphood, when he nearly lost both a sibling and a friend to its fast, deep nature. He only hopes the same hasn't occurred to Anoki now. He tries to hold onto hope despite all the signs otherwise, however, and nods to Lexus when he speaks up. "We'll get more of the pack looking. Perhaps Tariro can help organize some search teams to make sure it's as thorough as possible...and I'm sure we'll find him soon," he repeats once more, emphasizing his earlier words of hope.
Kachini nods as she listens to the others, her spirits dropping. "Well, I will go wherever needed to find him. Point me in a direction and I'll go look. Need me to go west or east if south and the waterfall will be looked at?" She again turns back to her eagerness, using her energy for a purpose now. Her tail wags again. "I have strong endurance for my time searching for my brother. I can evade fierce predators as well."
Anything's possible, including vanishing without a trace. That river sweeping him downstream and drowning him, a bear eating him skin and all... but Anoki's family is keeping up hope. Speaking of his family... there's that question from Lexus, about Alaqua. The wolf's ears droop, and she sighs. "Same as before. Slowly fading. Dad's barely leaving her side." Niyt shakes her head, and sighs. "We'll find Anoki, though. If we can. Thank you all for your help..." she says, and then adds to Kachini, "And you for the food, the other day. It was a kindness."
Lexus knows really that he could indeed disappear and never be found again but he doesn't want to think those thoughts let alone voice them. He nods sadly to the news of Anoki's parents until the mention of food stirs his mind in another direction. He sighs quietly and stiffly gets back to his paws "I should get something to eat and some rest before I head out to look again. We'll find him, we have to"
Haze glances towards Lexus when he mentions finding food, and nods along after him. "Sounds like a good plan. I'm going to try and find Tariro, maybe talk with him a bit about sending out searchers in shifts. I'll send him this way if I run into him," the brindle-furred male says before dipping his head to the pair of other females, then taking his own leave as well.
Kachini frowns and her tail stops wagging. "Oh... I'm so sorry about your mother, Niyt." She nods a few times, "I'm always here to help thought. Even for a little bit of food. I knew you weren't feeling well. I find that food helps me feel a little more awake to handle life's problems. Only way to keep a smile on the face when you're lethargic." She chuffs at the other two. "See you both later!" She asks Niyt, "Did you need me to get you some food right now? It also gives me time to think of a plan. I used to do that all the time when looking for Askook."
Niyt nods to Lexus. "Try the little gully by the twisted pine," she says softly. One good thing about all her searching, she does have some idea where food is to be found! She nods to Haze as he departs, and then turns her head to face Kachini. "I caught a lizard earlier, when he was still in night's torpor," she tells the female. "I'm fine."
Kachini nods a few times, "Well are you going to go to the waterfall with Zuphi now? I guess I'll go look to the east to search in that direction." She leaps away but turns her head, "If you need me, just hollar!" She begins to hum a fierce battle song that gets her going for the search.
Niyt nods. "Good luck!" she calls to Kachini. Good luck to all of the searchers - and to Anoki, wherever he is. She turns, and starts to pad off herself, in another direction for the continuing search.
