Two-River Fork
Lexus - Male Wolf [Cerulean]
Rayen - Female Wolf [Cerulean Guest]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
With a deer on the table so to speak the pack should be well fed for a couple of days so perhaps it's no surprise that after checking around the boarders Lexus has decided a break is in order. Crouched in the snow in a bed of reeds he's settle down to watch some birds pecking around the river bank. Lying around isn't his idea of relaxing though and the peace is soon spoiled as when he decides there's enough birds he erupts out of the reeds, barking loudly and sending them all scattering over the ice as they try to take to the skies.
Rayen had spent the early morning speaking with an aged wolf who was staying as a guest upon the lands, he had many interesting stories for her about the beginning and a little of the history of the pack and the packs that combined to form it. She'd left the grizzled male though to trot along the borders of the land, half looking for her neice and half just exploring. Since Tariro gave her the ok to stay as a guest for the time being she's done a lot of exploring, mainly of the outskirts, but hasn't had the guts to intrude further into the packlands. The sudden explosion of birds and barks that follow snag the females attention in a heartbeat and for a moment she's stone-still. Should she continue? Should she leave it be? Curiosity however gets the better of her and Rayen slowly changes her path to bring her closer to the commotion. A male she does not know yet however comes into view and Rayen hesitates visibly, head tilted to one side curiously. A polite chuff is given in the others direction but that is all for now.
The barking turns into a laugh as the birds fly from the area and Lexus is left on the bank, tail wagging lazily. Surprising birds always used to be fun, seems it still is. He silences the second he hears Rayen though and snaps his head down to look at the female. Not one he knows either but he knows there's still a few visiting that he hasn't met, he's hopeful that it's just one of those "Hello?" his posture is a little stiff but not entirely unfriendly.
The brown wolf is eyed, cautiously, but more so to place a face with whatever name she may possibly be given. Rayen wonders quietly if this is one of the other wolves Coinin said was a "guest" of the pack. At his Hello she dips her muzzle politely to the earth. Her tail is held very neutral is not slightly more submissive, ears twitched to the sides. A calm wolfish grin is given, green flecked eyes focused upon him. "Evening," she calls, a calm crisp sound to her voice. "I didn't mean to intrude.." she pauses, "On your bird chasing.." grin.
Lexus has a certain confidence, he knows he belongs there, he's just not sure if she does or not. Her actions are calming though and he relaxes slightly, a bit of a smile appearing as she mentions the birds "They may have preferred if you has intruded sooner, then again they're birds, scattering and flying off is what they do best" he vaguely remembers that there's two wolves he hasn't met yet but he has no idea which one this is "I've not see you before, are you one of the guests here or another newcomer?"
Rayen chuckles gently at his words, "I suppose you have a point!" She doesn't really close the distance between them just yet but she does nod her head a little at his question, "I suppose for now I would be considered just a guest? I offered my assistance through winter with my neice Catori, where it goes from there however is left to fate." She rolls a shoulder faintly in a light shrug. "Oh my! I didn't mean to be rude, my name is Rayen," she offeres, a gentle smile parting her maw.
And so the mystery is solved! It's good enough for Lexus not to believe she's an unknown wanderer in the lands and he smiles a little more "Ahh, I was told you and your niece were in the area but I had yet to bump into either of you. My name is Lexus. I'm with the pack, Tariro is my nephew"
At that the tension in her shoulders releases and Rayen takes tentative steps closer to the male, a soft breath released. If he was part of the pack and Tariro's uncle at that he can't be all that bad! The female nods her head gently, "Yeah, Catori has been a busy youngin thats for sure, it is almost hard for me to keep tabs on her," she chuckles, "But knowing she's safe makes it all that better." As she nears the female slowly drops herself to her haunches, "Well it is a pleasure to meet you then Lexus! There are still many faces I've yet to see I'll admit."
Lexus' tail offers a friendly wag as she comes closer "Oh trust me I know the feeling, try keeping track of all their kids too. A few more lots of pups and I might start struggling to remember names let alone where they've got to when they've grown up" he does his bit for closing the gap too and stops to sit with her, though there is still a bit of a gap is still there of course, friendly or not he still doesn't really know her "A pleasure as well, I believe I was away visiting my homelands when you arrived or perhaps I would have met you sooner" he chuckles "Provided the unusual influx of guests is over you may yet stand a chance of meeting everyone though"
Rayen ahhs gently and nods her head, "I see, no worries though, there's time to meet everyone," she chuckles. "Our pack was quite abit smaller then here I'll have to say. It wasn't that hard to remember all the faces." Rayen shakes her head briefly, that gentle smile still lingering upon her muzzle. Ears swivle to catch the noises around them before tilting her head to one side and then the other, "You and your pack do have a beautiful home though, I have enjoyed myself greatly."
Lexus studies Rayen closely as she speaks or at least she certainly has his full attention. He looks a little surprised about the comment of the pack size "I had never considered it so large myself but I suppose it has grown over the years. As one set of pups grows up and adds to the numbers it's easy to miss it growing larger" he gives the river a small glance as he chuckles then "We seem to move around occasionally. I myself prefer the mountains but that is were I grew up and nothing else is quite the same"
The female hmms gently as she glances around and then back to Lexus, "No place like home right," she states. She wouldn't be going home however, her leaving to find her neice was a big no-no in their elders and alphas eyes. However to Rayen, family was important, and Catori needed her. She shifts her weight before questioning, "So do you chase birds regularly or was that a spark of puphood that found its way back?" she chuckles.
Lexus' eyes roam again, fixing on the distant mountains for a few seconds, thoughtful before he looks back to the other wolf again "It will always be home but it's quite lonely without family. Between a mountain and the pack I've chosen the pack" he smiles again "They laugh more" it doesn't stop him going back to the mountains to visit still but he always returns to the pack again. He laughs at the question of the birds "Well, I might have enjoyed such things in younger years" he grins "Hey, the pack is fed, the lands are peaceful and I thought no one was watching. What better time to act like a bit of an idiot?"
Rayen beams a smile at that, "Family is a very important thing in life that is for sure." She sits in thoughtful silence for a breif moment before his words cause a giggle to come from her, "I don't blame you! But don't let me stop you, by all means go find some more birds! It was rather entertaining," she teases. Rayen knew however what it was like; she was known to act like a bit of an idiot from time to time and with no shame!
Lexus laughs again "I suppose I could try to find a bush of birds to break up though I don't think we'll find any anywhere near here for a while yet. My plan after watching them squawk for their lives was actually to go for a run. I would be happy for the company though if you wished to join me? Perhaps there will be some birds to scare along the way"
Rayen's ears perk at the mention of a run and she smiles brightly, "I'd love to!" and at that her tail gives a rather happy swish behind her. "And if there are any birds, I hope they're ready for it," she chuckles. Rayen loves a good run thats for sure.
What luck, Lexus enjoys a run too, it's practically his favourite way to spend time. He grins as she accepts, his tail wagging as well as he raises back to his paws "They don't be, that's half the fun" he springs into life quickly, setting the pace of a rather slow lope so he's not just leaving her behind and running off.
Rayen laughs at this, "I suppose your right!" As he raises to all fours Rayen joins him with a little whine of excitement and sets off after him once he's on the move. She keeps pace with him easily, staying maybe a few feet back and to the side. She's been wandering around mostly by herself so it's nice to have someone to have as company, even if its as little as a conversation to a nice run!
Lexus doesn't keep the easy pace for long, running is what he does particularly speedy, charging across the countryside sort of running and with a running partner, well, the temptation to test if she can keep up is too great. He steadily gets faster, kicking up snow behind him until finally he decides to just sprint on ahead as fast as he can go. He was faster when he was younger mind but a lifetime of that sort of activity has still left him a lot faster than the average wolf.
Running, not loping, was how she managed to catch up with her neice in as short a time that she did. She wasn't a very large wolf and her small frame and lighter weight made it easier for her to fly across the landscape. As Lexus picks up the pace her maw opens in a wolfish grin; we'll see who can keep up with who Mr! Her pace picks up to put her just a pace behind and further to the side then before. She was having a blast, and the thought that she'd have to clean the mud out of her white underside ment nothing as of right now.
Lexus isn't exactly a big wolf either, tall enough to be average in hight but that was thanks to long legs rather than any real bulk. They were both light and speedy, it was shaping up to be a good race and Lex was glad for the challenge. His tongue lolled out the side of his mouth as he ran, panting heavily. He could just see her a pace behind out the corner of his eye and he grinned, a very good run. He suddenly changed direction to head for the woods, instant obstacle course and possibly some birds too!
She was just beginning to pant heavily, tongue lolling yet 'gracefully' for she is a female and does not loll un-gracefully! When Lexus changes direction Rayen has a split second to follow, kicking up more snow in a flurry as she does so but manages to stay right on his heels. She stares ahead at the oncoming brush, yellow-green eyes bright with thrill. Hopefully her smaller frame will help her out here! Her pace picks up in excitement, breath coming now in heavy quick pants.
Lexus leapt straight over the first bush and zigzagged a few trees before something fluttering caught his eye and his direction changed again, a squawk of alarm coming from the bush he was charging quickly towards when one of the birds spotted him.
A tree is dodged, some tangled brush is avoided and Rayen criss-crosses behind Lexus to his other side as he changes direction to charge the hiding spot of a bird and or birds. She flanks the other side and charges the bush with a quick bark and lunge. The explosion of birds into the air and surrounding woods gets another excited bark from Rayen. Instead of stopping to chase them however the female dashes forwards excitedly, zipping around the trunk of a tree and over a thick gathering of brush she's off like a bullet, eyes and ears intently seeking the next target.
Lexus does skid to a halt for a few seconds to bark up at the birds as they fly away. It's not too long though, Rayen might get away otherwise. His tail has just enough time to wag once before he charges off after her, quickly catching up to charge along in her wake and dodging trees, jumping rocks and ducking low branches with barely a break in pace as he pants heavily.
She thinks for a second that the birds may have snagged his full attention. However from the corner of her gaze she notices he's back on her tail. Ooo He's good! She jumps up and off a few scattered boulders and rocks, zips around some trees and under limbs just high enough for her to slip under. Her tail flys out behind, slightly curled up in excitement and ears pressed forwards. Her gaze scans the area as quickly as is possible with their fast pace, the sceneary flying by at a blur.
Lexus handles the boulders with the practiced ease of a proper mountain wolf, leaping swiftly between them and jumping a good distance off of the last one. He sees the lowest branches coming up and have three choices. Go around, go slow, or, as he seems to be acting like a loon anyway, charge right through the things! A very long time ago someone taught him to headbutt, now he's not going to be left behind and lowers his head, ears flattening back as he keeps running and at the last moment closes his eyes, the branches cracking away as he plowed on through the thankfully not too thick branches. He's past them within seconds and jumps the next low branch instead as he continues to stick right behind her and even goes to catch up enough to playfully nip at the end of her tail.
Ears flick backwards to catch the snapping of the branches and in a slight worry glances over her shoulder to make sure he was ok. She notices then that he's right on her tail, enough so to give it a little nip. She manages a laugh around the panting as she turns to pick her next destination. Her dainty paws find their way easily within the ruts and ditches naturally formed in the wooded floor. She takes a quick turn to the right and then left around a tightly cluster of trees. Instead of darting straight again as would be the first thought she doubles back around the trees in hopes of catching him from the side or behind, a nip to his haunches before she darts off again past the cluster of trees with a quick bolt.
Lexus' paws aren't quite so dainty but the have experience certainly and thunder over the uneven ground, barely even staying down long enough for the chance to trip. He skids around to follow her as she twists and turns but when she doesn't go straight on he does and he laughs as he's nipped this time, the laugh wheezing a little for his panting. He skids to a quick stop, kicking up a whole lot of snow, twigs and leaves before he can spring back the other way and charge back after her again. He doesn't catch up easily now though, as much as he wishes he could he can't keep up the pace forever and he is starting to ware out. It doesn't stop him running though, he's too stubborn to give in easily.
Her own legs are starting to burn, but its that good burn that make you know your working your body to the soul; at least for her. She runs until she reaches a small clearing in the brush, sprint dwindling to a lope to a slow trot then finally to a steady walk, her tail swaying quickly behind her. She doesn't speak just yet as her heavy pants slow to quick breaths, tongue sliding across her maw and over her nose. She prances a little where she stands, "Well that was definately much needed!" There's a crisp excited tone to her voice, yellow-green eyes still bright.
Lexus would run forever if he could but as she slows his body follows suit and he walks into the clearing after her, panting quick and heavy as his tongue hangs out and he flops back on his haunches, sitting there and trying to catch his breath again. He looks back up to her as she speaks, a grin forming at the edges of his mouth since most of it is still taken up by panting "You can certainly" pant pant pant "Run, I'll give you that" his tail thumps against the ground but the rest of him won't be moving for a good few minutes yet.
Rayen allows her body to slump to it's haunches, her breathing still heavy but slowing to an even rythem. "As can you!" she comments to the running. She gives her neck and shoulders an awkward shake in her sitting position before letting her eyes scan the surrounding landscape. They'd covered a lot of ground and the light had begun to fade drastically to cover the sky with its nighttime canvas of colors.
Lexus starts to take stock of their surroundings as well "Hmm. I've no idea which bit of the woods this is" and with it getting dark soon it could take a long time to follow their trails back. He stiffly stood again, stretching out his legs "Ohh, that's going to be sore in the morning" he chuckles and grins again "Totally worth it though. It's been a while since I've had someone to run against, even longer someone who could keep up"
Rayen chuckles as she stands as well, stretching first this leg then that, and finally her back in a long bow. Her body is given a good shake before she tilts her head to the side, "Your guess is as good as mine! But I'm sure we can work together to figure it out." She starts to pick her way back the way they came, nostrils flaring gently in the breeze. She was good at finding her trail, something you had to be good at when you were with a small pack and sometimes had to seperate on your own for a long period of time. Gaze slips back to Lexus over her shoulder, "Well anytime you wish to race again, I'm up for the challange. It was definately a good time." Her pace is slow but steady as she picks her way over the brush and obsticals in the growing dark.
Lexus had several periods of long wandering wolf in his history for all he always considered himself a pack wolf, he's a funny thing. He returns to the spot where they entered the clearing to pick up the trail from there and start to follow it back home again "Oh I'm certain I'll be taking you up on that offer. Most fun I've had all week and my week included deer hunting" which is of course incredibly fun if you come home with deer. There's a small pause in his conversation as he walks along before he suddenly splits into a grin again "Race you home?" if his legs could talk they'd be moaning and cursing the wolf they were attached to, Lex would probably still ignore them though. He's had the chance to recatch his breath, he won't go quite the speed he was and the dark wouldn't help but it's just so much more fun than walking.
She listens intently, wandering beside him as she peers into the darkness. Rayen's ears perk at his offer and she squints her eyes a little, "Your on!" With that the shewolf is off, kicking snow up in her wake. Her own limbs are going to be hurting that's for sure but hey! Go big or go home right. The pace is a lot calmer then before, the idea of curling up when they get there and sleeping like a pup all the motivation she needed.
