Sanuye - female coyote
Bristlecone - male coyote
Iko and Timber - male coyotes
---Sweeping Steppe---
The two have been traveling for some time now, the forest has long been forgotten, and there is no trace of it anywhere on the horizon. Sanuye is in the lead once more, trotting along, tail swaying about with a soft snuffle escaping her in the process. The weather has been rather good actually, not to much rain, and out here in this area that isn't a surprize. A faint gust of wing blasts through the area at times, causing sand to blow across in small little whirl pools of air and sand. Sanuye jumps over a small one and giggles while she glances back towards where Brstilecone was, her tail swaying a few times in the process.
Yeah, they're sure getting somewhere now! Well, they're always getting somewhere, but... Bristlecone looks around at the dry lands, the faint haze of dust, and then back as Sanuye's leap is a spurt of motion. He laughs, and trots after her as the dust-devil scuttles away, turning his head sideways to snap at its retreat. "Not very tasty."
Sanuye chuckles and grins. "Well your not suppose to eat it!" She calls out with an amused tone and shake of her head. Her paws carry her onwards towards a small hill and pauses looking down a small valley as it were, a large cedar tree within the center. "Oh looky here.. Found a big old tree." Her tail snaps and she grins. "Bet I'll beat you to it!" She calls out while suddenly racing towards it.
Bristlecone snorts with a laugh. "Sez you!" he retorts about dust devil, and then perks his ears at the challenge, and lowers himself into the race as well. Of course, Sanuye does have a head start, but he's not going to let that stop him!
Sanuye grins while she races along jumping over a few rocks and dirt clods in the process. Her paws slamming into the ground and thus kicking up the lose dirt in the process. A soft laugh escaping her as she gets closer and closer to the tree.
Bristlecone grrrs under his breath, trying to put on a burst of speed, running along a little ditch where bits of dirt fall down onto him and then bounding up from it for that final distance to the old cedar tree.
Sanuye giggles as she races along, jumping a few steps in the process as she bounds up in front of the large tree. A laugh escaping her while she perches upon one of the old roots there. The tree is /huge/ it must have been here for ever to say the least. Its roots are thick and half of them are out of the ground making nice hiding spots among the roots, and it would seem at some point someone lived here as there is a few den opens found.
Bristlecone may be behind, but he decides to just keep on running - up onto a root, and then another root, and, why, by then he's high enough up that he can jump onto one of the lower branches, and around from there to another one. He learned this trick of climbing trees when he was a pup, and he uses it now to get a decent way up, peeting down at Sanuye from there. "So. I win?" he asks with a grin. She may have gotten here first, but he got here further!
Sanuye glances around looking for Bristlecone and then peers upwards. A faint err escapes her and she soon laughs. A sly grin seen. "Well.. I suppose so." This said with an amused tone and shake of her head. She shifts and bounces upon her paws to clamber up after him while giggling.
Trees have a trick to them, with how the branches are curvy and move underfoot. Bristlecone laughs as Sanuye comes after him, and he bounces around from one branch to the other, going around the big cedar-boughs.
Sanuye blinks as she watches him bounce around like a squirrel. She shifts and scrambles settling herself on a nice thick branch and just chuckles. "I said you won.. What are you acting like a squirrel for?"
Bristlecone laughs, and pauses on a branch, peering out over the flatlands from there. "I'd make a bad squirrel. I don't much like nuts," he says, and then shrugs. "I don't know. It's sort of... like being home again. Well, everything's different, but somehow..." he hehs, and shrugs again.
Sanuye chuckles and shakes her head slightly while she shifts to stretch out over the branch and looks over the area, her tail thumping a few times in the process. "THis is rather nice place I have to say.." She glances one way then another.
Bristlecone nods, looking around. "I haven't been a place like this before. All the grass, but it's all so dry, not like near the riverbank where it's wet grass... or the desert that's dry but no grass."
Sanuye smiles and nods, her tail swaying. "I lived in a place sorta like this all my life up until I left home.." Home, yes there's a problems. Her ears twitch forward slightl and her gaze passes over the area as if checking something while her nose witches. She licks across her maw and shifts. Was that a scent on a passing breeze that she.. knew? It couldn't be..
Home! It's where the heart... well, it's a place, anyhow. Bristlecone nods, not noticing Sanuye's reaction yet. "It does seem like a nice sort of place, it's just... different."
Sanuye ear twitches and she glances over to him, a soft chuckle escaping her while nodding. "Well yes that is true." She says while grinning and shifts on her paws, relaxing somewhat again but her gaze is on the eastwards horizen.
Bristlecone pads out closer to the edge of the branch... but he's looking west, toward the high peak of a mountaintop, and so missing any signs of what Sanuye may find coming from the east. Obliviousyote is oblivious, or at least distracted. "Huh," he muses, peering at the white cap of snow. "That looks... but it's summer."
Sanuye hums and glances over to Bristlecone, ears perking forward as she looks west and smiles. "The mountains keep the snow much longer then down here." She offers while tilting her head. "It thins out some but not a lot really."
Bristlecone huhs, and nods. "Neat," he says. "So, I guess if you want to run around in the snow... we know where to go!" Yes, okay, it's miles and miles away, but... details!
Sanuye laughs out at this while she stands up, her tail swaying about a few times. "Indeed.. But it take forever to get there.. An by then the snow will already come back here. Which yes some snow does reach this area just never stays for long."
Bristlecone nods. "There's always snow by the river in winter, too... and it gets just about as hot there. We just go swimming a lot more, so that makes it easier." He starts to hop down, branch to branch to branch.
Sanuye chuckles softly and nods before glancing eastwards once more. A soft sigh escapes her and she wonders before following after him down to the tree base once more. "So.. Did you plan on staying out an about or did you ever want to return home?"
Bristlecone tilts his head, considering on that. "I dunno. I mean, I guess I might go home for a bit... see how mom and dad are doing, what Felix is up to... it might be nice to visit." He shrugs a little, then turns to Sanuye. "What about you?"
Sanuye ears twitch forward a moment. "Well.. I don't think I have much of a home to actually return to." More like it wouldn't be smart for her to go home. Her ears twitch forward and then lower as she actually quivers. She caught the scent again, and this time its closer. "Bristlecone.. You should get back in the tree.." Two forms may be seen making there way towards the tree, slow movements that are rather relaxed as if they don't have a care in the world, it would be two more coyotes..
Bristlecone awws. "That's too bad..." he says, and then tilts his head inquisitively to Sanuye. "Huh? Why?" he asks, looking from here and then back to those approaching figures. What's going on here?
The two figures continue forward, both male and one looking older the the three here and in a way somewhat familiar to Sanuye, at least in color if nothing else. "Because she's worried I might do something.. harsh.." Comes the thick brassy tone of the older male whom slowly pauses once about five feet from the pair. His steely green eyes rest upon Bristlecone before turning to look at Sanuye. "We have been searching for you.. Daughter.."
Sanuye shifts on her paws, her lowering as she watches the pair. "Seems you've found me.." Is soon said with a soft tone.
Well. He's certainly not going to leave in /that/ case. Bristlecone returns the gaze from the older male, bracing all four paws on the ground and not moving away from Sanuye... though he does look back at her. Yeah, this doesn't look much like a happy reunion. "Well, hello. So you were in the area, were you?"
A faint snarl escapes the other coyote that is next to the older male, once Bristlecone turns all defensive. "You should watch your tongue if you don't want it removed pup." Is said with a thin tone.
"Bristle.. It's alright.." Sanuye says with a faint murmur as she shifts a bit closer to him, a few steps ahead to be between them. "This is my father Iko and another coyote from a neighboring group, his name is Timber."
Iko is quiet while eyeing Bristlecone, a slight sneer seen before looking back to his daughter. "You left home, your family.. for some common dog?" Her family is all about pedigree's, which is one reason her father is not that sane. How Sanuye turned out normal no one understands.
Bristlecone snorts at the threat in his direction, and continues to stand his ground. In fact, he takes a step closer to Sanuye. He nods at her introduction of the others, then smirks a bit at Iko's comment. "Nah, a dog's something different, you know," he offers 'helpfully'. "I did date one for a bit, but me, I'm just a coyote." As if her family didn't have enough reason to hate him already, Bristlecone is helping!
Sanuye blinks as she hears Bristle and sends a faint glance towards him that shows 'that' didn't help!' Her gaze turns back to her father whom like always one can never read.
Though Iko is fuming mad at this new information from Bristlecone. "If one lays with a dog, they he or she is a dog.." He states with a thin tone while eyeing his daughter. "You on the other paw have a lot to answer too.. When you left your mother went into fits.. FITS.. She is still unwell."
Timber growls while eyeing Bristlecone still, wanting to do something most likely that isn't very nice.
"She never was all there.." Sanuye mutters out to her father, which causes the male to slash out hard and heavy with a paw to Sanuye's face leaving claw marks in his wake, and her yelping. "You.. never.. speak of your family in a I'll manner. What has this dog been teaching you?"
Bristlecone finds a growl rising up in his chest in answer as her father strikes out at Sanuye. "Not the teaching you'd have to worry about, now is it?" he retorts, taking a step forward. "After all... dogs beget dogs. Proud Iko, father to a female dog. Oh, for shame. Too bad that's what you've got now." And with that, Bristlecone gives the most lavish of smirks, implying all sorts of filthy things and never mind that they're all lies. /These/ fools don't need to know the truth!
Sanuye tilts her head slightly, her cheek holding a set of clawmarks now, skin deep but they still sting. A slight glance is offered back to Bristlecone, that most likely was not a good thing to say.
Timber just about loses himself and snaps out towards Bristle. "You little bug.. We can always change that."
Iko's rage is clearly seen as he hears Bristlecone, and he takes a few steps forward sniffing twice at his daughter before looking towards her friend. "Is this true.. Sanuye..?"
For a moment Sanuye is not sure what to say before lifting her head tail lashing slowly and she merely nods. "Yes, its all true.. You know I left home for a reason, and I restared my life with Bristlecone.."
Iko is quiet now, as if someone just smacked him across the face.
A good thing? Well, probably not exactly. It's more of a troublemaking, terrible, bad idea thing to say. Bristlecone does have a temper, though, and he knows how to hit where it hurts... and sometimes, that's not at all a physical location. He doesn't say anything else, because he doesn't have to, just stands there with a smirk. Maybe Sanuye will decide that her family isn't so bad after all... or maybe she'll decide to stick with him, no matter how stupid his ideas are. It's no worse than the canyon one, right?
Timber grumbles out and eyes the three. "This bring new problems to the table Iko.. It was not part of the deal.." He states madly.
Iko knows this and can see all his hard work, and plans crumbling around him at this. With jaw tighting Iko shifts on his paws and looks to Bristlecone. "You.. Have no idea what you have just started dog. You have robbed me of my daughter's rights to be fill a promise that was made moons ago." An in Iko's eyes that means Sanuye is as dead as her older brother. "An because of this you shall know pain.. Like you have no idea." Iko then thens and snaps at Timber. "Move, we are leaving.."
Timber on the other paw has no wish to leave and eyes Bristle and Sanuye before another snap from Iko gets him moving. "I'll see you again.. doggie.." With that both Iko and Timber leave, for now it would seem..
Bristlecone smirks, pretending he doesn't have a care in the world as he looks at Iko and Timber. So their plans are falling apart? Oh, his heart breaks. "So it goes, old man," he says to Iko, and watches as they depart... right up until they're out of sight, at which point his brave face melts away and he turns to Sanuye with an anxious look, trying to lick at the scratches on her face. "Are you okay?"
Sanuye is rather unsure what to do, or say for that matter while she watches the pair leave. She swallows while slowly stepping backwards and bumps into one of the tree roots which makes her sit down. Her ears flatten and she eyes the ground a few moments as if expecting them to come running back and drag her away, which at this point in time she wouldn't put up much of a fight. She blinks and looks to Bristle. "I'm fine.. Bristlecone.. Why did you do that?"
Bristlecone shuffles a paw against the ground, and drops his gaze. "I just... they were... they were being stupid and mean. And I just... I couldn't just stand by." He scuffles his paw a bit more, and sighs. "It's... I can go now. I didn't mean to... insult you, I just... I got angry, and... I'm sorry." He turns, and starts to pad away toward the north slowly.
Sanuye blinks a this, it takes her a moment to take it in before she is on her paws following after him. "Bristlecone.. Wait!" She calls out while running forward to stop in front of him. Her gaze resting on his. "You didn't insult me.. An.. I don't want you to leave.. Please?"
Bristlecone stops, and looks up at Sanuye. "I just... I mean, we haven't even talked about anything. And that's up to you, anyway, but they were just talking like it was some big plan, and... it didn't even matter what you said, and I don't ever want to make you do something you don't want."
Sanuye takes in a breath as she watches Bristlecone, a soft smile seen and she noses at his cheek a moment. "I know we haven't.. But.. I've gotten rather fond of you.." She glances after the two that are gone and then looks back to him. "There was a plan.. Timber is from the neighboring pack, and I was promised to him when I reached a certain aged. It was to combine our families and give both equal rights to the lands, prey, water and so forth. It would also help with the cougars as they would help one other." She is quiet, her eyes closing, her cheek throbbing a moment. "My parents believe that only certain coyotes so join up for the good of the family so to speak.. What they have done for ever. My grandmother was against it, but her parents gave her no choice."
Bristlecone warms to a smile back as Sanuye noses at him, and nods softly. He turns his head to look after the departed - for now! - coyotes as well. "Why can't they just ally anyway? I mean..." That's what his family would do! ...yeah, and her family would /HATE/ his. If they thought Bristlecone was bad, just wait until they meet his mother, friend to prey, and his father who shared a den with a fox. The coyote shakes his head, frowning after where the others went. After a moment, he says, "I was telling the truth about the dog, you know. I mean... I did date one." Sanuye doesn't seem much like her parents, but still. Honest'yote, at least to her.
"They don't think of it like that.. They wanting a bonding contract as it were." Sanuye offers with a soft tone, her ears lowering while she shifts to lay herself down to the ground. Her gaze resting on his and she smiles. "That's alright.. It doesn't bother me." She noses at him against. "But.. I have a feeling they will try to do something at some point again.. My father is no one to just drop matters, and Timber is ruthless. I still think he had a paw in helping the cougars kill my brother."
Yeah, Bristlecone doesn't really get that. Either you agree to something, or you don't. He huffs a little, and then sighs, lowering his head to nose gently at Sanuye. "Then... I guess we'd better figure out how to deal with them." It's his fight now too! ...really, he's probably in more danger than Sanuye. They want her back to redeem her. Him, they just want gone. "Hurm."
Sanuye lets her head settle down to the ground while she offers him a soft smile. "I.. I don't know what we can do with them truthfully Bristlecone.. An I don't want them to hurt you or your family because of me." This said while she watches the ground slightly.
Bristlecone settles himself down next to Sanuye. "Aww, I can take care of myself," he says, then frowns a little. His family... okay, not so much. His sister's competent in a fight, but his parents? Pff, as if. His dad would go talking peacey dove stuff, and... well, last time there was a fight around home, he was the one saving everyone from... a single coyote. He sighs. "Well. I do have one idea."
Sanuye ears perk forward slightly while she looks over to Bristlecone. She noses at her softly and shifts to leans closer to let her side press against his. "I know you can.. But Still I would feel awful if something did happen to you.. or your family.." There is a pause, ears perking. "What idea is that?"
Bristlecone leans back against Sanuye, and wags his tail gently, swaying it against hers and letting it rest there. "There was this pack of wolves, near the river. We could go, cut through their territory. They know me, so we'd be okay, but when the others came after us... well, wolves don't tend to much like intruders, right?"
Sanuye blinks at this, a soft oh escapes her. "Well.. That is an idea." She offers with a soft breath escaping her in the process. "I wonder if it will be enough though." This said with a soft tone, her eyes closing in the process while she takes in a breath. "I can't believe this is happening.. I thought I had gotten far enough away.."
"It's a start, anyway," says Bristlecone, and nuzzles softly along Sanuye's shoulder. "I mean..." He sighs a bit. If they've been persistent enough to follow her this far, well, it probably won't be enough. But maybe it'll be enough to slow them down and let Bristle and San find a new idea.
Sanuye nods a moment. "Ya.. It is a start." She smiles a moment and noses at his cheek. "Thanks Bristlecone.." This said with a soft tone. "If I wasn't with you I.. Think this would have ended rather differently."
Bristlecone smiles back, returning the nuzzle. "I, well, I just hope it'll turn out okay. Not like the thing with the canyon." He grins, a little lopsided, and wriggles his tail against hers.
Sanuye blinks and chuckles softly before nodding, a faint grin seen. "Ya well... I dono if anything can be the canyon. That was a heck of a thing." She winks at him before giving his cheek a slurp and giggles.
Bristlecone laughs a little, and nods. "But, hey. We made it through that, didn't we?" And if they can survive that, surely they can survive anything! He noses in and presses his cheek to hers, wurfing softly.
Sanuye chuckles and murmurs out softly while her eyes close and she snuggles close, pondering sleeping it seems. "I'm really glad I met you Bristlecone.." Ever with everything that happened, it all works out to some degree..
Bristlecone smiles, his tail thumping softly. "I'm glad, too..." he says, and he hesitates for a moment before saying, so softly it's almost impossible to hear, practically whispered into the fur of her shoulder, "...I love you."
Sanuye ear twitch, her eyes open slightly and she tilts her head to peer at him. A soft smile seen and she leans close to press a soft lick across his nose. "An.. I love you to Bristlecone.." She offers with a soft murr escaping her.
Bristlecone smiles happily, and he lick-kisses back at Sanuye. He presses close against her, and closes his eyes, savoring the warmth and comfort of being near her and resting... because tomorrow is going to be another busy, troublesome day, and they'll face it together.
Sanuye lets her head press back against his neck, her eyes closing with a soft murmur escaping her. Yes tomorrow will be another day, a very hard day. Though with one another they could be able to get through anything.. Hopefully.

Hopefully.
