Bristlecone - male coyote
Sanuye - female coyote
---Sweeping Steppe---
The ground has passed under coyote paws, and the days have passed by as well. The travels of this pair have been peaceful for the most part, though there have been occasional reminders that they aren't alone and can't truly escape the past. At least not Sanuye's past; as for Bristlecone, well, those very travels have been bringing them closer to where the male coyote comes from. There's not much shelter in the steppe, but he's currently still sleeping in the best they've found for the past night; a cliff with a bit of an overhang. At least it stops the wind. Mostly.
The travels has been good at times though other times not so much. At the moment Sanuye is settled at the front of the overhang, her ears perking forward and her tired gaze looks up at the sky. A faint snuffle escapes her while she stretches and a yawn escapes, her forepaw lifts to scratch across her face a few times.
Bristlecone shifts in his sleep, flopping out onto his side. He looks comfortable. Maybe... too comfortable. At least, that's what a little buzzy insect seems to think, because after darting past Sanuye, it comes down to rest right on Bristlecone's nose.
Sanuye lowers her head down to the ground, eyes closed and ears lowered. Her mind is a mess of what they have been through. She remember meeting up with her father and Yellowtail and then runing into Yellowtail again which left her with more scars across her shoulder until Bristlecone scared him off. Her ears twitch, the faint buzz gets her attention and she sniffs a moment before lifting her head to glance around and then over to Bristle while tilting her head. She doesn't catch sight of the bug just yet it seems.
Bristlecone's dreams of the moment seem to be more peaceful. His sleeping face has a lazy smile on it... right up until the bug lands. He sniffs, and then sniffs more strongly, puffing out air in an attempt to dislodge it, before he finally sneezes himself all the way into awake, his ears splaying and then perking up as he gives his head a shake. The bug flies off, disgruntled.
Sanuye blinks as she watches Bristle, a soft chuckle escaping her while she shifts on her paws and slowly sits herself up to her haunches. "Hey there.. You alright?" She questions softly before giving herself a shak.
Bristlecone sneezes again, less vigorously this time, and then stretches out his muzzle in a yawn before pushing himself up to his feet. "Yeah, I'm... good. Yeah. Good morning." He gives a grin, and then his head tilts to the side as he sees a bit of Sanuye's expression. "Not so good morning?"
Sanuye smiles softly while her tail sways a few times. "Its alright.. I just didn't sleep much." She offers softly, a forepaw lifting to rub across her face once more. Needless to say everything that has been going on has been bothering her mentaly and starting to get somewhat physical to say the least.
"Aww," says Bristlecone, and leans over to nuzzle at Sanuye's cheek. "I can go hunting on my own, if you want. You can nap a bit, and I'll bring you something to eat..."
Sanuye smiles softly and leans closer to him nuzzling him back. "I may need to.. Are you sure that's alright?" She questions as her ears perk forward. "But you don't have to bring me anything back I can find something later when I wake up."
Bristlecone's tail wags as he nuzzles, and then he nods. "Sure it's okay. I mean, it might take a while 'cause it's getting on toward winter and there's less prey around, but I still do know how to hunt on my own." He grins, and noses again.
Sanuye shifts on her paws as he says that. "I know. Which is why I feel bad that you are going out there on your own." Her tail sways a fwe times and she smiles before nosing at his cheek. "I'm sure you know how to." This said with a soft chuckle escaping her.
Bristlecone shrugs, still looking cheerful. "It's okay. I think..." He pauses, turning to look around and sniff at the air, then turns back with a grin. "Yeah. There's a field near here that's full of mice. Used to be far away, but..." he trails off again. Yes, this coyote is definitely getting close to where he grew up. "Well, I can check it out, anyway."
Sanuye hums and nods at this. "I guess we're close to your home again aren't we?" She questions with a tilt of her head as she watches him knowing he didn't want to come back per say.. An there back because of her..
Bristlecone drops his head a little. "Yeah," he answers. "Maybe... a day of travel, that way. Maybe two." He points with his muzzle, in a direction not quite the one they were going but not very far off from it, either. They'll be going closer before they move away, if they keep on like this.
Sanuye shifts closer to her and lets her shoulder press against his. "Bristle.. 'm sorry that we had to come back here." She offers with a soft tone. "If you.. would rather I'll go alone. Somewhere else if needs be.."
Bristlecone leans back against Sanuye. He's quiet for a moment, and then he shakes his head. "Nah. It's okay. I mean... there are worse families." Like Sanuye's. Okay, awkward there. The coyote ducks his head, looking away a moment and then peering back at his companion. "Hey, maybe we should even visit them. While we're here, I mean. We could get cryptic advice from my dad."
Sanuye ears lower slightly but that is all, she knows that she put him in danger after all. She lets her gaze lower to the ground an a soft breath escapes her. "Sure.. I don't see why not. I just.. I just feel so bad that all this has happened Bristlecone." Her form slowly slides back to the ground and her head settles between her front paws.
Bristlecone's ears wilt a bit, and he turns to nuzzle down at Sanuye, licking around her ears. "It's not your fault," he says. "I mean... it isn't." Great argument there, 'cone. Full points for rhetoric... not. The coyote sighs, lowering his head and nuzzling some.
Sanuye feels that it is her fault, she takes a soft breath and looks up to him, a soft smile seen and she noses back at him. "Thank you.." She says softly and takes in a slight breath.
Bristlecone returns the smile, and perks up a little. Now, about that hunting... yeah, only suddenly he doesn't much want to leave Sanuye alone. Not with thoughts like those jumping around in her head. He looks thoughtful, head tilted to the side a little as he looks down at her.
Sanuye is quiet for a few moments, her gaze drifting upwards to him, watching him and a faints mile is seen. "Can.. You stay with me until I fall asleep before hunting?" This questioned with a soft tone. As for the thoughts on her mind, leaving is still there but she isn't planning on doing anything at the moment.
Yeah! Something he can actually do something about, something coherent and achievable! Bristlecone nods firmly. "Of course," he says, and walks his paws down to the ground to lie next to Sanuye, shifting his body up against hers and lightly curling his tail in across hers.
Sanuye smiles at the answer and shifts to lean close to him, her head nuzzling up against his shoulders while she takes in a soft breath. "Thanks.." She murmurs out, relaxing some with him here. It doesn't take her that long before she drifts off finally getting some rest.
