Hilltop Vista
In the midst of the grassy fields, a high hill rises smoothly above the ground, about a hundred feet tall at its peak. The climb to the top is an easy one, affording a breathtaking view of the local scenery. The hill is a verdant green year-round, though in the spring and summer a myriad of vibrantly-colored wildflower blooms cover its expanse. At the base of the mound, the entrance to a den can be seen, a stark contrast of brown dirt against the lush green grass covering the hill and its surroundings.
----
Dry leaves make not the best meal, but for cover they work wonders. Hiding in a cluster of leaves, sitting still as she slowly works on plucking the last green leaves of grass from at her feet, Snowdrop keeps track of her surroundings with both ears and eyes, though her mind is slightly wandering. Even though old enough to leave her home burrow and wander, the young doe is still, as all rabbits rightly should be, paranoid. This is just a stop though, here. After all. The place stinks of wolves.
So many wolves. Really, it's like they were rolling around in these leaves or something! Oh wait. They probably were. In fact, here comes one of the 'culprits' now. A wolf on the prowl. A wolf who is, in fact, out hunting for dinner. Ikuna isn't much expecting to find anything this close to the den, but stranger things have happened, so he's keeping an eye out.
Ears flip erect breifly, then fall back as twitching nose wiggles still; the young doe hunches into herself to form a lump, still, in the leaves, as the smell and sound of a wolf approaching draws her attention; of course, this lasts only until she sees it is a young wolf; still far larger than she but so. The young are usually easily tricked, or so her mother lead her to believe.
Ahrairah was being cautious and about. Sure, some of the pack knew by now that he actually was friends with Hadir, well. Some might still see a tasty little meal, so. Besides, sneaking was always fun... and he thought he smelled something less canine around, for once. It wasn't often that you spotted anything alive and not-wolf out here. He spots an idle bit of clover amid the fall wildflowers on the hill, and nibbles. Mm. Better than some meals one could get, this time of year.
Ikuna starts to walk right past the concealed rabbits... then pauses. Sniff, sniff. Is there something here? He pauses, looking about.
Yeeup, the young are easily tricked, as long as one sits still. Snowdrop seems to take notice of this.. and the buck up on the hill, yer eyes widening slightly at this. He sits there, on the hill, where the wolf can see, and isn't afraid. Either too young, too stupid, or ill. Frith take him if the latter, she decides, before she shivers a little, and then shuffles a cautious step closer into the leaves. After all, she's too small for a meal, right? right, she decides.
Ahrairah munches clover as he stays where he is... though he does spot the young doe, and his ears twitch a little. He looks right at her, for a moment, and then away... not wanting to draw attention to her, if she's hiding. He's small enough that he's almost shrouded by the wildflowers, as it is... staying behind the taller ones, fur blending with the drier bits of grass.
Ikuna sniffs again - and the question of rabbity tricks is left to another time, for along with what he thinks is rabbit, he smells what's definitely a deer. Excellent. He doubles back toward the den, looking to pick up a few others to carry out this hunt.
... Whew; with the wolf turning back to the den, Snowdrop sees a chance to slowly move; shuffling to turn from the leaves, and then start for a less than obvious place closer to the hill. She hunkers down once she reaches the less nibbled grass and begins to yank small bits of it up in careful motions, watching the wolf... but also casting an occasional glance towards Ahrairah. Strange that he seems so casual here.
Tala lets out a yawn as she stretches from her spot near the den. She lifts a forepaw to scratch and rub across her head a few times while her tail flicks around a few times.
Ahrairah is totally at ease on the wolf-hill, because he is awesome. Well. He thinks he is, anyhow. He does lop closer toward the doe, though, and yanks up some clover for her. Soon as he's nearby, he drops it in front of her. "Good nibble spot up a bit," he says. "...Don't mind them. One of their pups 'adopted' me," he says, and flicks his ears a little bit. Of course, he's keeping his voice down.
Ikuna is almost back to the den when he hears a noise - albeit a quiet one. He looks back.. and, oh, look, there _is_ a rabbit there. Now, Ahrairah may have convinced a wolf-pup that they were friends, but that pup hasn't exactly spread the news far and wide. Hard to do that, when you can't talk properly yet. So here's Ikuna, out to hunt - and here's a little rabbit, right by his den. Deer can wait, he's got something to take care of. So Ikuna turns around once more, and heads toward the bunny at a stalk.
Blinking at the clover, the silver-furred doe peers at Ahrairah like he's be struck by the madness, but she smirks a little, and accepts the clover with a casual dip of her head to pluck it up sharply, and then munches slowly, ears flattening back in a lazy motion. Of course, this lasts only long enough for her to notice Ikuna is coming closer toward she and her 'new friend', at which point she says softly, "If they're such good friends, why's that one about to eat you?" She asks, before she sinks down again into a frozen crouch, watching Ikuna's approach.
Ahrairah shakes his head. "Stay down so he doesn't see you," he murmurs, and hops toward Ikuna. He lets his ears droop and dips his head. "Hey. Didn't Hadir mention that I'm helping him learn words?" he asks. Awful bold for a bunny! "...Wachiwa says it's okay and good practice for him. I tell him Rabbit Stories and help him with his words... is that okay?" he asks. See! Asking approval. Please don't eat him.
Tala maw twitches as she shifts to her paws and stretches out, a squeaky yawn escaping her before her gaze drifts over the area. It takes a moment before she caches sight of Ikuna and she shifts moving forward to slowly catch up to see what he may be up to it would seem. Her ears perk forward, nose twitching as she hears a strange voice, with a brow lifted she trods forward more. "Ikuna?.."
The rabbit is coming toward him. The RABBIT is coming toward HIM. Can rabbits get the madness? Ikuna suspects they can, and so he's somewhat concerned at this turn of affairs. His hackles start to raise... and then the rabbit speaks. Now, Ahrairah's strategy of mentioning Hadir's name would ordinarily be an excellent one. It would convince most people that the stranger in question is who they claim. Unfortunately for the rabbit, the last time Ikuna trusted a stranger who came bearing the names of his pack he ended up STUCK in a HOLE for MONTHS and nearly KILLED. The raised hackles are joined by a soft growl. "I don't know you, rabbit; but this is a wolf pack. We hunt rabbits here." He shows his teeth, briefly. "I don't hunt babies... and so I suggest you leave. Next time, you may not be so lucky."
Snowdrop watches, keeping hunkered down, until of course, Ahrairah's ploy of name dropping fails. She dips her head to bury her fuzzy face between her fluffy paws with a soft moan of 'oh Frith and Inle' at him, before she sighs, and starts after him, remarking, "You'll have to forgive him, sir," at the wolf bristling and ready to snap, before she tries to catch at Ahrairah's tail with her mouth lightly, to tug at him, drag him back even. "I don't know him but even I could tell he's gotten into some bad lettuce," she offers. /TWO/ rabbits, coming at Ikuna. Goodness gracious great balls o' fire.
Ahrairah droops a little and looks toward Snowdrop. "I swear I played with that pup Hadir and I was helping him," he murmurs. "...Guess he'll have to come out to play instead of me trying to visit him anymore." He sounds genuinely upset. "...Let's go." He doesn't even pause, just flattens his ears and takes off, away from the hill. Reckless kid of a bunny.
...at least the second rabbit is _mostly_ sane. What with, you know, treating him like a predator that could gobble her up rather than the hosting librarian for Happy Bunny Fun Time Story Hour. Ikuna stands there, watching as the rabbits are successfully frightened off, and then turns to his sister. Their parents' death. His kidnapping. Hadir's illness. Chewy leaving. Rabbits strutting up to wolves. "Is the whole world going mad?"
Tala lits a brow while she pauses next to her brother. "Ikuan.. Why is the rabbit talking to you?" She questions an looks.. well.. confused.
Thank Frith! As soon as Ahraihrah shows some sense and takes off, Snowdrop turns and says, "Thank you for not eating us, sir," as politely as she can manage without wanting to just drop faint there, before she takes off after the buck, with ears back. She'll wait till he's slowed down before she starts into him. "I don't know who you are but don't you think that was just about the stupidest thing in the world /anyone/ like us could do? Have you gone tharn or something?"
Ahrairah shakes his head. "No. I wandered across this place by accident one time, running away from something else... and that wolf pup seemed... nice, for a wolf. I was just trying to visit him," he says, sighing softly. His ears would be in danger of being tripped on, if he were anything besides your average bunny, with how low they sit right now. "...Oh well. It's a waste of an interesting story and good clover."
Ikuna shakes his head to Tala. "I don't know," he says. Really. What is the world coming to? "I just don't know."
Tala eyes the rabbits and lifts a brow looking utterly confused. "I don't think we should eat anything that acts that stupid.." She mutters out faintly. A snort escaping her.
