Helaku - male wolf
Niyt - female wolf
Silverstream - female wolf
---Two-River Fork---
Time passes. As the elder left, the younger came about on a scent trail he followed for months, but never quite landed. It lingered on the border of some pack he never heard of before. Young Helaku knew his ways about packs; the one that raised him cautioned him against the old ways of his father, who was a figment of stories; his grandfather even more so. By some strange happening, the pack that raised this Helaku considered his grandfather a partial deity during Winter. Imagine that--it also didn't quite set a good example though this young wolf wasn't about examples...sort of. He ventured deeper into the land knowing he may risk upsetting someone, but he had to find 'him'. He knew all, everything. And today he was followed by a pesky raven who begged for food until now. Now he demanded it. The raven hopped about on a branch above the young wolf. "You owe me scraps!" he squawked. "No, I don't," said Helaku. "Yes you do!" Back and forth these two argued the Yes's and No's until it became a musical. "Yes I do," Helaku proclaimed. Then the Raven said, "No, you don't!" A grin and a swipe of his tail, Helaku bounced in the snow as he continued following the trail. "Glad we could come to an agreement, good bird." What...just happened?
As it happens, Niyt is to be found dozing. There are imprints in the snow around her, places where the bodies of other wolves lay and not that long ago, but at the moment, she's alone. Her head is tucked behind her tail, and the winter's wind ruffles through her fur. As it brings her the sound of voices, one ear flickers, but they are yet some distance away and she is slow to wake; only drifting toward consciousness, not leaping there.
The Raven said no more, stumped by the very reversal he'd just been handed. Helaku surveyed his nose in the snow and ground, picking up whatever scent he could of the elder wolf. It was so fresh, yet so far; surrounded by other wolves. Surrounded? He paused there, raising his ears as he considered the motions told unto him by the prints, where they fell. Though young, he knew these things. He spent a moment trying to discern the multiple scents until he found the one he sought, which trailed off by itself. Now..what was that about? Curious!
The seed of 'hey, someone is here!' that the earlier voices planted grows in Niyt's head, and before long the wolf's blind eyes are opening, her ears flicking to take in her environment. She uncurls her tail and rises, stretching out with a soft mmmmh before sniffing the air around her. Nothing too out of the ordinary, it seems, for she takes the time to shake her fur out before slowly padding in the direction that sound came from.
Helaku stared at the invisible trail and followed it along his line of sight until it ended at the woods. This was even fresher; he was close by! It wouldn't be long before he had achieved the Great Impossible! He didn't ask for aid from any pack or animal during his hunt, as it was the supposed tradition when seeking another wolf who had been separated. After all, other packs and animals getting involved made things complicated and could attract unwanted attention. "Yes you do," squawked the Raven who decided to continue pestering. "Yes, I do what I do," he replied. "No, you don't!" Oh boy, they were going to start that again! "We've had this argument, good bird. Now be gone with your weirdness. Because yes you do." This particular Raven? Idiot. It flew off, thinking it won again.
Yes, there were voices, and now there are again. Not just a dream, then. Niyt's ears perk to the sound of Raven and... Wolf, it sounds like. Though not a wolf she recognizes. Hmm. Another visitor? Perhaps someone has been bringing home strays again. She lifts up her head and lets out a brief howl; the call of a wolf on her own pack's land, one that calls to others of her pack... and tells to visitors and intruders alike that this land is claimed.
Oh boy, there it was. This pack had detected him! The young wolf paused and looked about. Had they a watcher in the trees or snow? Helaku murmured to himself and backtracked on that trail; he knew where it was and where it headed. Perhaps he could vacate and find it at the appropriate border! Fortunately, the Raven didn't return. It was against the rules to make contact unless it was necessary and so far he'd come that it gave him an option--split or stay. The howl, at least, didn't sound threatening.
Silverstream tilts her head as she spots the unusaul sight and seemingly strange interaction between a new wolf and some raven. She has returned after a fruitless search for the other helaku, she shakes her head and walks towards him carefully she hears Niyt and knows she called out, hopefully she will not be angry with her return.
While Niyt has announced her presence, she's not seeking out the other wolf she heard; simply standing now, listening for if there's an answer. If it is an intruder, well, that's a matter to be brought to other wolves, ones more suited to fighting and defense than she is. If it's a guest, she'll likely hear an answer soon enough, whether it's a howl or more of a hello.
Silence, should he be? His amber eyes locked onto Silver and then the other wolf who didn't come near. Two females; that was the beginning. Where the females were the males eventually came. "If you wish me off your land, I will go in peace," he started, "Unless you enjoy the sight of me standing here. So young and fresh. Able...willing." His muzzle turned into a mischievous snerk. Most wolves would not find that entertaining, but even when faced with fangs he did so and today there were none.
Silverstream smiles as she says "Hello Niyt" She walks alone side her and lays down. "Niyt I have come to speak with you once more though there is a strange wolf I am not familliar with, he does not apear to be a member of the pack." She looks at him and says "Willing to what? you should really be more specific, becuase saying your willing really leaves alot open to discussion."
Niyt turns her head to the direction of those voices, and she slowly pads closer. Her blindness may become apparent, whether in the fogged appearance of her eyes or lack of focus in her gaze. Enjoy the sight? She's got nothing of the sort! The scent, however, makes her frown slightly, for there's something familiar about it... though that voice has nothing in common. Even in his best moods, Helaku never would have spoken like that. She nods to Silverstream, though her attention remains split. "Hello, Silverstream. Her posture is calm, steady; and she says to the strange wolf, "These are Cerulean's lands." She's quiet for a moment, considering. Her pack has welcomed visitors in the past; indeed, many of the wolves here now were visitors once. Still, she's disinclined to give this stranger her blessing at the moment; so instead she avoids answering and says, "What brings you here?"
Well, that was a bit of a blunder, now wasn't it? He had never seen a blind wolf before, yet she knew where to step apparently. That wasn't too surprising, but still she couldn't enjoy the spectacle that was...Helaku! Well, she could, but that was his own mischief silently talking between his ears. "Well, if we're to become formal and whatnot, Cerulean females," he said, the voice dipping from the playful nature to the strictly aristocratic, "A bit of a search...a stalk, hunt...whichever your colloquials deem it. You've had many wolves here, yet I only see two---fascinating!"
Silverstream smiles as she says "How is your day Niyt I hope you had a pleasant evening, had you the chance to hunt? I could gather something for you if you do not mind?" She then turns back to Helaku and says "Obviously the others are elsewhere, what is it you said that brings you here? Hunting right? well then how has that gone for you?" She tries to maintain a rather calm gesture and be inviting to the young wolf, but he is strange to her and she is not yet quite able to determine how to respond.
"We do not live stacked one on top of each other like mice nesting in winter... nor all caught on each others fur like overgrown ticks," notes Niyt to Helaku, though with a bit of a smile, making it somewhere between rebuke and joke. She's not without her humor, after all, even if she has also a serious side. "A hunt, is it? For what quarry?" She turns back to Silverstream. "I'm fine... and I've already eaten." Her attention then goes back to Helaku.
"Oh, not, not that sort of hunt," said Helaku. "I came seeking someone of certain speciality." His eyes shifted between the two wolves, the blind and unblind, being the sly thing he was. "I don't wish to involve others if I can help it as it is a personal...venue...opportunity...task...thing." Either he didn't know how to make his point clear or he redundnatly named whatever he was on about multiple names just to see how others reacted to it, or perhaps that was just the way this wolf spoke. "Oh dear, where are my manners for two lovely ladies? I am Helaku of the Miasmi on a search for stories, curiosities, happenings and reported sighting of my grandfather's spirit." He bowed humbly, elegantly one might say.
Silverstream chuckles as she says "Indeed we do not" Finding Niyts comment rather ammusing as she tilts her head and says "if you venture it alone and speak in riddles then you shall not find much aid in others, though you did say you wish to venture this hunt alone, I would be willing to help you if you be more willing to speak a bit more planly." She tilts her head and says "We have seen another wolf carrying your name but I doubt he was your grandfather perhaps your father, I do not know much other then what I have been told over the past few days."
Niyt nods calmly about Helaku's search-or-whatever - she's heard stranger things. Heck, she's probably _done_ stranger things. What really gets a response is his introduction. Her ears flick in recognition, and she frowns. "Yes, there has been another Helaku here. If your grandfather is he who was called a spirit of winter, then it is your father who lived here for a time." A moment's pause, and then she adds, "He was perhaps not the best-loved of wolves."
That turned this particular Helaku's ears, what Silver said. Another wolf carrying the Helaku name? The name came from some ancient pack which he never learned about, but his father would, and it was surely his father that he sought. "If you possibly know my father, for he is the one I seek, then I will gladly accept your aid." Imagine that. A Helaku that accepted aid; didn't see that one coming! When Niyt spoke up about his father he narrowed his eyes just a touch--not out of spite or distaste, but rather the things he knew to be true. "I am Helaku, sired by Helaku, sired by the First," he said, his voice losing its formal tone. It already bothered him that 'lived', the past tense, was used. So close, only to be denied!Though, when he undertook this journey he never expected a positive result. "We were separated...huge fire. My mother, brother, and sister didn't survive and I was found by the Miasmi...a little too late. I'm gracious you're not hiding his truth, Cerulean. The Miasmi told me my father was once happy after great discord when he met my mother. He stopped fighting, though I'm not sure what they meant by that. After the fire, I'm told he became rather wasted. I can only beg your pardons...."
Silverstream smiles as she says "Perhaps not the best loved but a memoriable wolf none the less, I only met him a few days ago and yet he had left quite the impression. He seemed to be haunted by the past of his grandfather whom had been stricken with rabies and banished from his pack, your father held a grudge for this and unwisely let his anger consume him and destroy what could of been a good soul, I pray that you his son does not follow in his footsteps."
Niyt lets out a long, quiet sigh, and she settles down into a seated position, curling her tail around her legs. While she doesn't know all the details - like this one, Helaku-who-was-Snow's offspring - she knows enough to match things up with his story. She nods. "There are many here who know his name; here, and in the Ute pack. Your grandfather was of that pack; your father made them his enemies." And she'll say no more on that now; if this Helaku has sense, he'll treat it with caution. "Your father left Cerulean only a short time ago, and yet..." She closes those blind eyes for a moment. "There is little of him left to find."
Helaku knew there was a chance he wouldn't like what he found, but this was a bit more than he expected. The Miasmi were not far, but still a distance away and he'd come all this way through subtle hints to find what he sought. He longed for it so much that he didn't exactly think of what he'd do when he found or ended the journey. "D-do you know if he's still alive?" he asked. "It sounds like he's gone. And by the scents, nobody went with him?" He eagerly jammed his nose into the snow and siffed for the scent again. The youth wasn't the serious type most of the time, or prone to worry or upset, but this did upset him even if he tried to hide it--he wouldn't manage to keep something like that hidden from Niyt or Silver. "I have to find him...if he's still alive he shouldn't die alone." Helaku scrambled and followed the scent to the woods, but like Silver's own efforts, it was thwarted. His father's scent trail literally came to an unexplainable end. "...How does he do that?" he muttered in content curiosity despite his upset. "His scent masking skill's driven me crazy all this time. Does he really want nobody to find him?" He frowned and lowered his ears. "...was he even aware I was here and did this to keep me safe from what he became?" These were huge, deeply psychological questions coming from the wolf, just as sharp as his own grandfather. "...This is too much for me to think about."
Silverstream nods and says "He said this would be his last winter, I am afraid it is posible he has left this world for the one of the spirits, though I can not be certain." She sighs and says "I would love to help you but I tried to follow him as well and could not find his traileither."
"If he dies alone, it is by his own choice," says Niyt softly, and as Helaku (the younger) loses his father's trail, she nods. "His own choice," she repeats, and lifts her nose up to the wind - the position of a howl, though she remains silent. She holds that pose for a moment, and then lowers her head again, still in silence.
His own choice. Helaku stared long at the woods, knowing that somewhere his father possibly still lived, but also perhaps died. The young wolf hesitantly took a step closer to the woods but stopped. All that history his father knew; someone else had to know it. He couldn't be the only one, but where would he find it? Back home with the Miasmi. They knew the story of his grandfather, but they didn't live it. "Fire wouldn't keep him from his mate and pups, including me," he said. "It was humans. My elders said he couldn't stop hating himself for being weak against them, so anything that was threatening became subject to destruction." At last the young wolf turned and faced the other two. He was a storyteller or collector, very much like a certain late wolf of a generation gone. "I carry his sense of loyalty, but not his clouded mind. My journey came to and end here, on your land. If it would please you, I will stay in my father's place..perhaps even become a pack member if your leaders beleive I can."
Silverstream chuckles as she shakes her head and says "I wish I could of seen the part of him you saw, he was bitter yet I could sense a better wolf then what he was showing. I can sense some of that good in you, as I said before do not become so determined about the past you forget about the present. You hafta live and be a wolf you want to be." She shrugs and says "But once again this is your choice, as for the pack thing I am trying to join as well and not sure, you hafta ask the alpha here."
At Helaku's words, Niyt's expression fades from her face, leaving it still; empty. Her voice, when she speaks, is almost toneless. "No. I will not answer you what pleases me, and I will not have that be your reason. If you desire to stay here, speak to Tariro or else to Coinin; if you desire to be part of Cerulean, speak to them further. I have nothing to do with it." She rises to her feet, and turns to walk away.
Helaku blinked at Niyt's words. Perhaps she saw more of his father than she liked, or maybe she saw the good in him more than the rest. His amber eyes shifted to Silver as Niyt stepped away. "If you're a stranger here too, perhaps we should stay together?" he said. "Traveling alone was nice, but I do miss having company."
Silverstream sighs as she says "You will hafta forgive Niyt she has been through quite a rough time, lately there have been some rather unpleasant disagreements. Yet she is right in that you should not try and join a pack to please someone else but do it only if you want too. Its your decision." She walks over and sits next to him studying him a moment as she says "That sounds fine I could use someone as lost as I get sometimes." She tries to remain cheerfull despite all the happenings that have been going on lately.
