Hadir - male juvenile wolf
Ikuna - male adolescent wolf
---Clover Lawn---
Hadir has not really left the den since the snow began to fly. He isn't overly sure that he liked the snow. It was cold and wet and everywhere. It was just easier to stay up at the den. But it was also a good deal more lonely. The trio of young wolves that usually had paid attention to him seem to be all off doing other things and his parents are pretty much nowhere to be found. Chewy is gone and Asku is nothing more than a memory. In short...its been really super boring. That is what brings him down to the snow covered lawn today.
Life for Ikuna has been anything but boring. The young wolf is moving through the field at a quick trot, barely even noticing the snow anymore. He's checking over the territory, and he's looking for the adult wolves, and he wants to see if Tala found - oh, hey. His attention is caught by a small figure in the snow, and he veers over in that direction. "Hey, Hadir."
Hadir is small for his age, but isn't teeny. At least not in his mind, "Hi Ikuna." he says. He has left behind some of the childish ways of talking now that he is nearly a year old and is more than capable now of addressing things in the manner that an adult would, though certainly he is far from being and adult and likly enough will never get to be one, "I think I don't like the snow much. I'd like it to be spring again." he says. Tala...he hasn't seen her around much at all. She never really paid all that much attention to him anyway. At least Ahiga and Ikuna always did. Along with Chewy...who he misses.
For all his slightly harried look, Ikuna pauses to laugh at Hadir's comment about the snow. "Yeah? Chewy doesn't much like snow either, you know. She gives the snowflakes dirty looks when they're falling, sometimes. It's not so bad, though... you can have fun in it. Sliding down hills, making big snow-wolves..."
Hadir hasn't really tried any of those things yet. Though he is glad to have a few ideas anyway. Perhaps Ikuna, Tala or Ahiga can show him sometime, "Ok." he says in response, "What are you doing?" he asks. Ikuna looks like he was in the middle of doing something pretty important.
"Well, I'm checking over our territory," says Ikuna. "It's a good thing to do, any time of year, because we need to make sure everything stays okay, and that nobody bad gets in." He lowers his head a bit, looking at the younger wolf on the level. "Do you know what to do if there's someone you don't recognize?"
Hadir doens't really have much of a clue, but he supposes that if he saw someone that he didn't recognize he would try to get away as fast as he can and make a really loud noise, "I'd come back to the den and make alot of noise. Then I'd find someone to deal with it." He knows enough not to deal with it himself.
Ikuna smiles, and nods. "That's a good thing to do!" he says approvingly. "Not all strangers are bad, but there _are_ bad strangers, and so that's why you get one of us adults to deal with it. Any stranger that doesn't want you to do that... well, that's probably a bad stranger."
Hadir probably could see why that was the case. If it was a mean person they wouldn't want to have you get help. They would just want you to stay there with them so they could hurt your or something. Not that he has really met anyone who would be classifed as bad, "I haven't seen anyone like that." he says as he sits himself down in the snow, "I only see Alth and you and Ahiga and Tala. I haven't seen seen my rabbit." Yep. Its still his rabbit. He knows now that they eat rabbits but that you don't eat your friends. That just wouldn't be right.
"That's good," says Ikuna about Hadir's lack of seeing anyone strange. "Be careful, though. Practice being alert whenever you're away from the den. It's a good skill to have." At the mention of the rabbit, his ears twitch, and he frowns slightly. Rabbits. Why is it rabbits? "Well. Have you tried looking for rabbit-tracks? The snow can be good for that..." he says, and then adds firmly, "Just don't go near the edges of our territory alone."
Hadir wasn't really planning on leaving. He likes to stick fairly close to home. After all you never know when you might have a bit of a fit and you don't want to be alone and cold out in the snow if that happens. You could freeze and then be prey for whatever happened to pass by, "I'm not planning on going anywhere." There really isn't much to see as far as he is concerned. Its all a big white blob. At least until spring rolls around, "I haven't seen any tracks or smelled them either."
And Ikuna is A-OK with that from Hadir. He nods. "Well, keep an eye out, but you might not see much. Rabbits don't hibernate, but they do go looking for nice burrows and stay inside them a lot during winter. He's probably just busy keeping warm and dry." ...or has been eaten by a hawk, or fox, or cat, but Ikuna doesn't mention that alternative aloud.
Hadir doesn't even really know where the rabbits live. It would be sort of cool to be small enough to go down one of the rabbit holes and look. It probably looks pretty similar to the den only smaller. He half wonders what the rabbits do all winter. Probably sit around tell stories and stuff. That would be cool to listen too, "Where's everyone else?" he asks. He hasn't really seen much of the others lately and would like to know.
"Well, Hadir... winter can be a fun time, but it's a hard time too. There's less prey around, and so we all have to work harder to find enough food for the pack. That's probably why you haven't seen everyone as much." Ikuna smiles, and leans in to nose at Hadir's shoulder. "It's a good thing winter doesn't come until wolfpups are old enough to be okay alone sometimes, or I don't know _what_ the pack would do."
Hadir isn't gonna complain too much. After all he does like to eat and if being alone sometimes means that he gets to eat he is sort of good with that, at least for the time being, "I suppose you could leave one behind and have them watch us while you guys were off doing the hunting. I think Tala could do that. She's a girl after all." At least in his mind that is what girls are supposed to do. Thats what his mother does when she isn't sleeping anyway.
"Just because she's a girl doesn't mean she's supposed to be stuck with puppies all the time," says Ikuna. "Tala's good at hunting, and so she goes hunting. Wolves should do things because they're good at them, not because it's what boys or girls are 'supposed' to do."
Hadir just thinks thats what moms do so why should Tala be any different. He hasn't really noticed girls yet of course, other than his sister who is sort of bothersome at times, but he manages to put up with her, "I didn't say she couldn't hunt...just that she could do that job too." He doens't want to disagree with Ikuna since well Ikuna is pretty much the boss these days.
Ikuna smiles slightly, and reaches a paw to pat at Hadir's shoulder. "But where's she gonna find the time to do all that? Your mom takes care of you and your sister, but she doesn't have time to hunt much. My mom hunted more, and so me and Tala didn't always get to see her. Hunting takes a lot of time, if you're gonna do it right." So does figuring out relationships, which is the other thing the adolescents have been busy with lately... but Ikuna's not going to even get into that, let alone the fact that Tala is, well, not particularly inclined to wolfpup-care. "I know it's been hard on you two... tell you what, I'll see if I can find some time to hang out at the den soon. Maybe tell some stories, or we can all howl together. How's that sound?"
Hadir considers this for a moment and nods, he would definitely like that. Thankfully he doesn't really have any relationship issues to worry about yet, though the time is fast approaching when he will notice the opposite gender and when he does...look out. Of course who would want a defective wolf as a mate? No one with real sense anyway. Of course he knows he is different than everyone else now, but he manages to mostly keep that out of his mind, "Thats cool." he says to him. Yeah he has noticed that Tala doesn't seem to like pups much.
"Okay. It's a plan, then." Ikuna smiles, and then glances along at where he was headed before. "I'd better get going again. I want to check the northern border before dark." He hesitates for a moment; there are dangers, and Hadir isn't the toughest of wolves... and might well slow him down, but... still. "You can come with me, if you want."
Hadir is most certainly not tough physically, but he is pretty tough emotionally and mentally. When you have a condition like his you either become weak and let others do things for you or you go for it and do the best that you can with what you have been given. In his case he has sort of had to when you have a sister like Alth. He is halfway interested in seeing what it is the older wolves do though, since he will likely have to do it some day, "I'd like to come." he says. He gets himself to his paws and shakes the snow from his pelt.
"Okay. C'mon then," says Ikuna, and he starts off toward the north at an easy sort of lope; definitely slower than usual, a pace meant to be fairly easy even for his nephew. He looks back to Hadir, waiting for the boy to catch up.
Hadir is mildly interested in seeing new places. He hasn't really ever been too far away from home before. The farthest he has ever been is when his dad and he met Mahoke out on the path somewhere. Theres another wolf that he hasn't seen very much of. In the end the pack for him is his sister, Ahiga, Ikuna, Tala and his mom and dad, and of course Chewy when she is around. He wonders where she has been. It would be good to see her again, "Ok." he says as he starts off after his uncle.
Ikuna leads the way, over the field and angling toward the creekbed. It's slower this way, yes... but making sure the youngsters know about the ways of the pack, their borders and how to do things, is important too. Making time for that matters. "So," he says as they reach the northwest corner. "This is our border. What we do on patrol is, we look for signs of anyone crossing the border, and we make sure our packs' scents are here. Why do you think that is?"
Hadir would imagine that the scent is pretty much for making sure that anyone who crosses it knows that you are there, "I think cause we want others to know that we are here so that they won't bother us too much. Sort of like telling them that we own this place and if you cross it you have to deal with us." He isn't a particularly violent young fellow or anything like that since he really isn't much of a fighter, but his sister seems to be.
Ikuna smiles, and nods. "That's right. We want others to know that this land is claimed. If you're ever out and smell the marks of another pack, you should stop at the border. If you want to talk to those wolves, you howl, and someone will come out and meet you. Even if you've visited before, it's good manners. When we visit Cerulean, we do that even though we're already friends." He continues pacing along as he talks, pausing from time to time to sniff at some tracks or to freshen a scentmark. "Ah. Here," he says, indicating a set of fox-tracks in the snow. "What do you make of those?"
Hadir wanders over and takes a look at the tracks. He of course has never seen a fox before so he really doens't know what the tracks look like. He has seen wolf tracks before obviously and rabbit tracks and even bird tracks in the summer but not fox. It looks like small wolf tracks, "Ummm..." he says as he consider, "I don't know. They look like small wolf tracks...really small." The rest of Ikuna's explaination he gives a nod too. Perhaps some day he too will get to go to see this Cerulean place. He'd kind of like that he thinks.
Ikuna waits patiently as Hadir investigates the tracks, and then nods. "They do look sort of like a wolf, but look how the base of the paw is different? And it sure smells different than wolf, doesn't it?" He pauses to let Hadir consider on that, then goes on. "These are from a fox - a full-grown one. Foxes are smaller than us, and they hunt alone instead of in packs. There are usually a few foxes in our territory; we don't mind them as neighbors, so long as they don't cause trouble."
Hadir considers for a moment, they do certainly smell different and to be honest they sort of stink. He has never seen one of these before in his life though doubtless he will get the chance to see them at some point, "Ok." he says. He can accept that, "Why don't they have packs?" he asks. He just sort of figured that everyone did. That is his entire frame of reference.
Ikuna starts moving again, once Hadir's done investigating the tracks. "That's just how they are," he says. "Most animals don't live in groups, and even ones that do don't hunt together. It takes a lot of practice to be able to work together and not just run into each other."
Hadir doesn't think he would much like not living in a group. Even if your sister can be a bit annoying at times it would be sort of lonely without her around and without the others around too, "Thats kinda weird." he says as he lifts his head to once again follow after Ikuna. He will probably never really get the chance to hunt, which is something that he hasn't really considered all that much.
Ikuna chuckles a bit. "Well, foxes would probably find it weird to have packs." He continues to pace along, investigating and marking the northern edge. There's nothing too worrisome he seems to find - an assortment of prey and small predators, nothing all that unusual.
Hadir doesn't really know what life would be like without a pack. He could see how it would be really strange if you had never had a pack around and then all of a sudden you did, "I dont' think I'd much like that. I like having a pack around with friends and family and stuff." Especially the folks that hunt and bring you food..thats one of the best parts. That and having folks to play with and explore with when the weather is good and nice.
"Wolves are meant to have packs," Ikuna says to Hadir with a nod. "I was away for a while, and it was... very hard."
Hadir hasn't really ever heard the story of Ikuna's time away from the pack. He of course wasn't born yet when all that nasty business had happened. Which is probably a good thing for the pack in general. He has heard people talk of it here and there but he was also much younger then and really didn't understand, "Why did you go away?" he asks.

All the more reason it seems to really stick close to home and not bother with strangers at all unless they have been properly vetted by someone older than himself. He of course can't really contemplate just how scary it would be, but he does know he wouldn't want to be taken away from his mother and all other family he has here, "Ok." he says softly, "I definitely won't mess with strangers then."
Ikuna smiles again, and nods to Hadir, leaning over to give the boy a light nosing. "Not all of them are bad, but there are bad ones. It's better to be safe." With that, he continues on, until they reach the edge of his patrol, near the crabapples tree. Still nothing suspicious, and he breathes a sigh of relief. "And that's a patrol," he says to Hadir with a smile. "Now, back to the den with us!"
