Dense Undergrowth
-----------------------------------------------------
There are worse things than being plastered with a spongy material, like not being able to move in the dead of night when your mouth if dry and your stomach grumbles. The morning brings different news however and evidence prove it. A disturbed slab of ground dotted in dried blood, hair and unused tree bark is all that remains of where a wolf once laid. To the east, paw prints lead away toward the creek following up stream a few paces. Tongue lapping at the cool waters surface, Althaea drinks till she is out of breath. Stepping back, lips licked clear of droplets, she looks back the way she came. Moving slow as she heads back, her gaze is to the ground.
True to his word, Brutal had spent a majority of the night listening to it pass by way of distant owl screeches, the melodic hum of crickets, and the distant chirping of late summer frogs down by the river banks. Though as these sounds gradually dissipated and the stars blinked out one by one, early dawn found Brutal stirring from sleep and rising to his feet, his great mass quivering with a wide yawn. Faint was the light in the sky and cool was the air, suggesting that the days of summer were beginning to come to a close. It doesn't take long before wakefulness brings to mind the worries of yesterday, which in turn, calls Brutal's attention to Althaea and the state of her condition. However, when he turns his gaze to the place where she should still lie, there is no she-wolf to be found. The last tendrils of sleep are jolted from him, ears erecting in alarm as he immediately begins to search the area like some detective, looking for evidence that would give direction and reason for Althaea's absence. Quickly does the massive male propel himself into motion, roaming the proximity of the area, nose close to the ground as he seeks her scent. Concern is easily discerned by his frantic movement, but so too is aggravation, told by the silvered fur bristling up along his shoulders and the frustrated growl that throttles in his throat. Worse, all he can smell is that damn tree bark!
Tree bark. It's not what her mother would have used, and so Miakoda set off some time ago to try her own family's version of treatment. As a result, the young she-wolf is nowhere to be seen in the area, not by Althaea as she struggles to slake her thirst nor by Brutal as he begins to wake. But that changes as Althaea turns away from the creek and as Brutal takes up his search for the aforementioned female; Mia trots down the path through the thick brush with purpose in her paces. When she gets close to where she thinks the two injured wolves have been resting, she lets out an inquisitive bark ... as she can't locate the others with either her eyes or nose, the latter thanks to the bundle of plants jutting from her mouth which are interfering with her sense of smell. And taste. Blech.
The smell of the tree bark should be enough to detect the she-wolf, but it turns out to not be necessary as Althaea appears from the cover if the outlining trees looking worse for ware. Her coat no longer the vibrant cream it has always been except around the face where she dunked it, and falls matted all around her wounds. Pressing forward the young female deposits herself right where she was last, or least she would have if not for the frantic Brutal who she spies across the way. Was she really gone that long? Faint smile taking to her lips, she barks once. The second coming from the thick brush goes unnoticed, her senses not quiet as they should be right now.
With his irritation rising, it is the sound of Miakoda's bark that brings Brutal's head snapping up, yellow eyes swiftly seeking out the movement of a lupine figure traversing down one of the various game trails that cut through the thicket. This is enough to start the burly male in Mia's direction, his carriage tense and his stride stiff, as if uncertain as to whom exactly to expect. After all, Brutal hasn't spent enough time around Miakoda to learn the sound of her steps and so the welcome she gets isn't exactly warm, though neither is it aggressive. In fact, catching sight of the bundle of floral in her mouth elicits a reaction more akin to astonishment, though whether it is impressed or begrudged remains to be told. This is in part because the arrival of another divides his attention, who then gains all of it when Brutal discovers it to be Althaea. A heavy sigh of relief escapes the male, though with it's release, it makes way for something else. Irritation. "Can you stop doing that?" he asks, though his tone is surely snappish. Not really giving her a chance to say otherwise, he goes on with his scolding, "Did it not cross your mind to wake me? What if something happens out there?" He huffs, drawing a breath to calm himself before crossing the small clearing, lowering his great head to nose at her neck, "You worry me." He shakes his head, remembering Miakoda and turning his regards in the she-wolf's direction, "Please tell me I don't have to chew on those..."
While her eyes and nose are hampered, her ears are still working just fine ... and they let her know that something large this way comes. Thankfully she's able to discern that it's not heavy or large enough to be a bear; there's not enough crunching of brush and thumping through the soil for that. Even still, she stops her walking and twists her head around so that she can see through the odd angle of leaves she's carrying. And, oh. It's Brutal. And then Althaea. She listens to the former scold the latter and shoots the other she-wolf a bemused grin around her mouthful of greenery, while Brutal isn't looking, of course. The moment the large wolf's attention comes back to her, the mirthful look vanishes and she's all business again. A garbled attempt at speech is attempted to answer him before she remembers her teeth are stuffed with this nasty stuff, and she then shakes her head, trotting forward again ... around Brutal, approaching Althaea.
"I could ask..." Althaea's words are cut short as Brutal's continue on, ears drooping and actions coming to a stop. Looking to the ground for a moment. "Its never worried you before." she sighs. "All those times you've wondered off without a word. How do you think that makes me feel." She would show the same amount of irritation as him if she knew it would matter. Keeping herself calm she returns the nosing. "You worry me too." Her attention then falls upon Miakoda who she just now notices coming in approach. The leaf covered grin she gives, though seen, isn't taken how it probably should be thus she stares. Those are for her aren't they. Great. Day four and Althaea was already tired of being treated like some kind of sick pup. Taking a seat, then dropping to a lay she huffs as if to say, lets get this over with.
The head shake from Miakoda gains a silent word of thanks from the male, who briefly turns his eyes skyward, clearly praising the gods that be. As for Althaea's words of argument, they don't go unheard and if not for the presence of Miakoda, there is a chance that he'd have more to say on the matter. Such as the difference between him wandering alone in the woods and her wandering alone in the woods. As it stands right now, the dark wolf just seems satisfied that no misfortune has come to her, letting his tongue wash across her furry cheek, "We'll talk about that later." he says, just so that Althaea won't think he is dodging the issue. For now, Brutal squares his shoulders as he adverts his attention back to the other she-wolf, yellow eyes momentarily fixed upon the various plants bundled together in her jaws. He also takes note of the decisive way Miakoda skirts around him, bringing the burly male to loft a curious brow, which is followed by a subtle, quiet smirk. Does he seriously make her that nervous? Or maybe its just a case of dislike? Against better judgment, the brute considers testing this theory.
Miakoda sets her humor aside completely as she reaches Althaea where the other she-wolf is lying down. After all, this next part is going to be anything but hilarious, especially for Mia since she's the one that has to deal with these nasty leaves. Her head lowers and with a rather disgusted 'pflegh!' sound, Mia spits the vegetation out of her mouth. Despite the fact that about a third of them are squashed from where she was holding onto them with her teeth, they are still recognizable as broad-leaf plantains ... her mother's cure-all and one of the few plants she can recognize and name. Turning her head a bit but not lifting it up, she says to Brutal, "I'm sure the taste of that bark will be stuck on your tongue for days. So I think adding the taste of this stuff on top of it might make you suicidal. And that's a little too much to have hanging on my conscience." A grin is flashed to him, perhaps indication that he won't have to test his theory after all. But the smile fades as she buckles down to the task at hand and with flattened ears, the she-wolf slowly and methodically plucks up every leaf and forces the entire mass into her slender muzzle. Mia then begins chewing thoroughly, looking determined but also looking like she's fighting the urge to vomit.
The rogue Gomati quickly opens her eyes in shock she's been having a lot of bad dreams lately. Slowly getting up on all fours the she-wolf stretches out her body as she looks around the area sniffing the air, not knowing what is going on or having heard any of the conversation between the other wolves, she doesn't say anything which is her routine upon waking up from her slumber.
Althaea had survived a near death experience that left her unconscious for months and with little to no help at all as an adolescent, yet as an adult walking across the brush covered clearing to get a drink with a bear inflicted flesh wound was like some kind of crime. She wasn't weak and certainly wasn't going to let some meek injury be what takes her down. Showing no signs of acknowledging Brutal's words of talking later, she hugs the ground like it were her best-friend. Tail flat against the ground, head included, 'Thaea waits looking out into the open.
After a solid thirty seconds of chewing, the leaves have been reduced to a dark green pulp and the fur is standing up along the curve of Miakoda's spine. With stiff forelegs, most likely due to the continuing effort of actually keeping the mess of leaves in her mouth, the she-wolf hovers her head over the worst of Althaea's injuries, the widest and deepest of the wounds. Ears still pinned back, Mia uses her tongue to hoist the warm, condensed, pulverized wad of plants from her mouth and onto the wound. Unable to suppress it, she gags for a short second or two, then regains some of her dignity ... closing her jaws and using her nose to spread the remedy across the tattered flesh as best she can. Once she's satisfied that she's done all she can, the she-wolf lifts her head a little and, while looking between both Althaea and Brutal, she splutters, "'scuse me." And then turns on her heels and bolts for the creek, crashing through the brush, heedless of what's getting stuck in her coat in the process.
Indeed, it seems Brutal won't have to test any boundaries with the she-wolf, who's playful remark and flashed grin catches the big wolf off guard. This causes him to blink a few times, before dark lips curve back into a soft smile and his chest rumbles with a quiet chortle, "Well, I doubt there is much left of my sanity to begin with, but all the same, you are much appreciated." That smile lingers, even threatens to turn into a grin as he watches Miakoda take to the task of chewing the herbs, though his nose does wrinkle and he looks to her with a expression of sympathy. Aside from this, the dark male remains quiet, simply observing the she-wolf's administrations and secretly elated that he's not the one having to do it this time a round. However, a bit of guilt is glimpsed upon his face when Mia, with her work finished, has to make a bolt for the bushes. Ugh. Poor thing. At this point, he takes notice of Gomati stirring a short distance away, which reminds him that he has two injured (and now one nauseated) wolf to hunt for. Leaning down, he licks between Althaea's ears, "I'm going to go hunting." he informs, before a small and almost impish smirk makes it to his muzzle, "Any request?"
Gomati makes her way closer towards Brutal and Althaea fixing her attention on Brutal. "I am sure you have more sanity than you think left." She says then looks over towards Althaea to see what her request is for Brutal's hunt.
Another dose of treatments has Althaea curled up against the ground in faint whimpers. Why cant they just bring food and warm wishes. Hidden among her agony is a sigh that brings her to look at Mia in her attempts to with hold onto all amounts of dignity she has left. She even watches as the she-wolf bolts off toward the creek. Food would of been less damning. All the while, she turns to Brutal whose own actions towards Mia for doing what she's doing is given a bit of an odd look. She supposes she should thank them both one day for torturing her. Dropping her head back upon the ground, she fails to look up when licked, ears twitching. Oh, now their going to bring food.. and wait is that Gomati. Is anyone going to torture her? Don't let poor Althaea be the only one. "Something big." She smirks caring less what it could be.
Not exactly enthused about Althaea's reaction, Brutal also can't really condemn her either. He remembers well his own attitude in regards to this herbal remedies, when it was Grim trying to smudge some nasty smelling gunk on him. But arguably, it did seem to help in the healing. For now though, Brutal isn't going to lecture in favor of either side, but instead just grins softly and gives Althaea one last nuzzle, "Alright, I'll see what I can find. Would a bear do?" Its a question poised in jest, for the massive wolf continues to grin as he departs, however in a more serious note, he does make a request over his shoulder, "And do try and stay here, will you?" As he makes his way past Gomati, the rogue gets a glance from the male and he mock whispers to her, though being sure he can be over heard, "If you have to, sit on her for me" Not waiting for any snide comments that might be sent in his direction, Brutal's hulking frame trots off down one of the game trails, chuckling as he goes.
The rouge looks over towards Brutal as he leaves and says, "I will." Knowing that he probably did not hear here then fixes her attention on Althaea. "How are you doing? Are you feeling any better?" Gomati asks hoping the answer is yes.
If Brutal comes back with a bear, she'd be surprised. What if he did though.. she hopes its the one that attacked her- Gomati too. Not pressing her luck Althaea just smiles. She knows he'll bring back something reasonable in size. Returning the affection this time around, a nods if given upon the burly wolfs departure. She cant make any promises though, but she doubts she'll be making a run for the border this time. Besides, being sat on by another when injured isn't what she calls enjoyment. Watching the wolf vanish into the shadows, 'Thaea turns to Gomati. "I was before this." She responds gesturing to the purple goop that Miakoda slathered on her. "I'm sure I'll be find once it stops stinging." Shifting around she moves to sniff at her side.. "Uhg, gross."
*
Gomati sits down on the ground. "That is understandable. Did someone put any herbs on me while I've been asleep? I have not felt anything yet. I have been having a lot of nightmares lately some being about my pack and others about the bear. In my dreams with the bear you are not around and the bear is about to kill me. Then I wake up before that happens in those dreams."
Althaea can't recall ever seeing anyone near the she-wolf not to mention putting anything on her if they were. "I don't think so." She says, giving Gomati a look over. Not a single abnormal colored thing on her. Lucky. Ears perked hearing Goma speak of having bad dreams she is quiet. Everyone has nightmares about traumatic things that have happened to them. "Its not uncommon to dream about whats happened in your life. I'm sure your just stressed." Either that or the girls some kind of seeress. "So long as your here with us, you have nothing to worry about."
Gomati keeps her attention on Althaea she's by no means a seeress. "I am not going any where any time soon. I think." She pauses for a moment. "Like to stay here for a good while maybe even permanently. I am not sure yet. I have been doing a lot of thinking as well."
Althaea smiles to this and is glad that she's at least giving it some thought. Ultimately isn't not really up to her whether Gomati is allowed to stay permanently; that would be her uncles decision. Staying as a guest though, she's all the right to declare. "Thinking about what?" Tapping her tail against the ground, 'Thaea looks to her paws in question. Was she dirty of what. Keeping her attention on the rogue, she gives her paws a few licks.
Gomati looks down at the ground, "I am thinking about giving pack life another chance. I just do not want to be involved with those from the pack in my past but another one if..." she pauses for a moment. "I can find one to join that is, or at least be welcomed to stay around if not a member."
Althaea looks up from her paws retracting her tongue. "That's good." Pack life was an option for anyone but not everyone who leaves it gives it a second chance. It was good to hear that Goma was at least willing to give it another try even if it meant as just a guest. "If your considering about join Ute, my uncles the Alpha. I'm sure he'd be willing to meet with you. Only if you want though. Its understandable if you want to hang around some more first. Get to know everyone." Meeting those in the pack isn't really the problem though, she thinks, its being liked by those in it.
Gomati thinks for a moment about Althaea's words. "I would like to meet with him and talk to him about it." The rogue says sincerely. "I am not sure what the out come will be but at least I will know the alpha of your pack and that might be a good thing for me." Sighing. "I just hope things will work out for the best with all that is involved."
Althaea head shakes then smiles. "Don't worry so much. I'm sure you'll do fine." Reverting back to her paws, she gives them a few more licks before looking back up. "Involved, what do you mean?" Does she mean the bear attack, or the part about her leaving her old back then suddenly asking to be a part of this one. She's sure her uncle will understand.
Gomati looks down at the ground, "In part it is about me leaving one pack and wanting to join another." She says. "I am not sure if that will be held against me. Also I do not want to be see any one get hurt either." She's talking about both emotional and physical pain. Fixing her attention on Althaea. "I mean. If I am accepted into Ute. I am worried that others might get hurt if things do not work out because I am not strong enough and some one might get hurt because of me not helping out when I should. Stuff like that." She clarifies. "I am still scared about the idea of being in a pack. I am afraid of messing up and making the pack mad or upset."
Althaea had a feeling that was going to be the case. "Only way to find out is to try. Back away now and you'll be letting your past define who you are." These words are similar to the ones she tolds Brutal. He's let his past get the better of him countless times and its only made things worse for those around him. hopefully Gomati doesn't allow the same. Giving her head a shake listening to the wolf once more she tries to give some encouragement. "There is a place for everyone Gomati. Don't be afraid to upset someone just because you are incapable of something. We all make mistakes and there will always be time to make up for them."
Gomati lets out a small yawn, "I am sure you are right about that. I will try and thank you." She then lays down on the ground. "I am going to try to get some more sleep." The rogue's eyes close and the female wolf starts to doze off. "I will see you when I wake up."
Althaea wasn't going anywhere this time, if she did it would be while everyone was away or sleeping. One lecture about how its unsafe and she needs to rest is enough. When Gomati is once more asleep, she look where Brutal had gone. The thought of tracking him down runs across her mind but she doesn't think he'd appreciate that much. So she remains where she is. This was going to be a quiet night.
