Dense Undergrowth
--------------------------------------------------
Miakoda hasn't been seen since she went tearing off through the woods, vanishing in the direction of the creek. But now, finally, she is making her way back towards the area that she so swiftly departed; this time, though, she is moving along the worn path rather than bulldozing her way through the tangle of branches and leaves. Easier going, you know. And as she walks along, the reason for her absence can likely be deduced, for her fur seems to be glistening with a lingering hint of dampness ... Someone must've taken a bath by way of a swim. And considering the cooler temperatures now, with winter's chill clearly felt in the breezes, Mia had to remain out in the sunshine so that her thickening coat would dry in as little time as possible.
The rogue Gomati is awake and standing on all fours not paying too much attention to her surroundings as she's lickng her side. The female wolf is glad that Summer is gone she's been getting tired of the weather and now that Autumn has finally come hopefully it will bring a change for the better and maybe there will be no more bear attacks? As for rather or not that is going to happen is like everything else uncertain.
In order to prevent another wolf's bottom from making itself at home upon her already sore body, Althaea remained just outside the undergrowth where she received the last treatments she hoped to ever get. On her back, nearly healed claw marks drown in the dirt of the ground as she paws up at the unreachable canopy above. Tail curled over her injured side, the she-wolf simply enjoys herself obviously feeling better. A few premature falling leaves take to the wind, blue eyes following them in dance as they go this way and that. Like a child, 'thaea looks amazed giggling as one leaf breaks free of the wind landing on her nose.
Well, it certainly isn't the biggest thing on the predatory menu, but today Brutal's success doesn't disappoint. Not that the massive male possesses some great prowess for the skill, especially since nature's design for him is more of a fighter than a hunter, but somehow the brute has managed to bring down a young whitetail buckling. Truth be told, Brutal really didn't bring down anything, but rather happened to be party to a matter of circumstance and quite a bit of luck. The circumstance is that with the arrival of autumn's brisk snap, the bucks have finished shedding their velvet and have just started challenging each other. And while the seasonal gladiators aren't yet serious, the ambitious youth are prone to foolish bravery. Thus so, injury is what ultimately claimed this young spike's life, Brutal just quickened his ending a little sooner. The buckling is definitely nothing to brag about, it's size efficient enough to fill the bellies for a few wolves, but just barely. The benefit is that it requires very little effort for Brutal to drag the kill back to the thicket, the creatures head cocked unnaturally to the side as Brutal hauls it along with powerful jaws seized at the throat, forelegs straddling each side of the whitetail's upper body while it's haunches drag along the ground beneath him. With his mouth full, yellow eyes beam with a certain pleasure; perhaps a joy that he is finally providing for others something other than brute muscle and bad feelings. Muzzle hoisted high so to keep the majority of the deer's shoulders off the ground, Brutal practically comes prancing in with almost a puppish jaunt, tail erect and wagging behind his massive frame. Regards are soon drawn to the occupants as he closes in, grunting a acknowledgment to Gomati and snorting a short sound of amusement at Althaea. It doesn't take long before ears pivot to the sound of paw steps and shuffled leaves, causing Brutal to take notice of Miakoda's return. Once again, this seems to elicit a moment of surprise for Brutal, for the male had surely thought she wouldn't be returning anytime soon. The fact that she has though, brings more pleasure than he expected, and it is this that surprises him more than anything. Dropping his prize, he grins to Althaea, "Well, it's not a bear...but I hear they'll make you fat anyways." With a further expression of mirth, gleaming yellow eyes are directed toward Miakoda, "Well well, you look...less green in the face." A smirk follows, "Can't really say the same for your teeth and lips.".
Given the fact that Gomati is standing up, the she-wolf's eyes are drawn to her first; Miakoda's head cocks inquisitively to one side, for she had not fully expected the rogue to still be here, especially now that the weather has begun its seasonal change. But no sooner has she begun pondering over the possible reasons behind her continued presence then her attention is snagged by Althaea, sprawled on her back and waggling her legs in the air. A grin hooks along her muzzle and she picks up her paces, ears and tail lifting into a cheery sort of positioning ... but aha, here comes a third thing to look at, and this one wins the prize of keeping her gaze. It's with a rather dumbfounded gawk that Mia observes Brutal cavorting in with that buck. A buck! The very idea of taking one of those down on alone is ... is ... well, it isn't! It's simply outside the realm of her abilities as a lone hunter of fairly average stature. She makes ready to comment, or more likely stutter, over the male's catch; but then he goes and speaks to her, his comments reminding her of their last encounter. And that last remark causes an abrupt widening of her eyes, one of her forepaws flying up to begin frantically rubbing along the side of her slender muzzle. Releasing a low, scoffing huff, she says, "Wish I could say that surprises me ... Those plants are the very definition of obnoxious."
The rogue stops licking her wounded side to glance over towards the others. "Hello every one." She says looking at the food that Brutal came back with and almost has a surprised look in her eyes almost as though she finds it hard that one can bring something that size back without any help. Then giggles. "I was in the mood to eat a bear." The rogue says playfully. She then stretches her body not turning away from the others.
It is with a sneeze that Althaea roll from her back to her injured side leaf jumping into the air and evidently landing up-top her head. The pressure applied to her wound is anything but an inconvenience, jumping up with a wince. The look on her face is one of stupidity knowing better than to use that side. Paws shuffling to gain her balance, she looks up to the sound of something large being drug, or walking. Maybe both. Eye blinking, the leaf on her head slides down her muzzle hitting the ground at her paws. Looking down at it 'Thaea smirks something of a chuckle before glancing back up to the burly wolf who she sees entering the thicket. Cracking a smile at Brutal she laughs. "Looking after my weight are we." Joking of course, shaking out her coat and approaching. Not getting far before she comes to realize Miakoda is nearby, nodding to her in greeting. Brow raised to Mia's actions she soon smirks. "Honestly, you can barely tell." So long as she didn't smile that is. Gomati is looked to next as her voice rings out from behind. "If only we were so lucky Gomati." A bear would of been nice, but a buck works too.
If Brutal happened to catch sight of Miakoda's expression of astonishment in reaction to his kill, he doesn't show any sign of it, for there is no boastful posturing or smug grinning that is expectant of praise. In fact, the grizzled and battle scarred brute just goes on to behave as if it where nothing, save for the obvious delight he feels in having provided a source of nourishment at the least. This is not because Brutal so casually takes down male whitetail as a common routine, but rather because there is nothing to gloat about in this victory; mother nature simply provided him with a already downed animal and he just needed to accept it. However, it doesn't occur to the large wolf that by all impression, he must be a deadly hunter. Oh the disappointment that could be had! As it is, the smirk that lingers on Brutal's dark flews just curls back into a full fledged grin as Miakoda starts rubbing at her muzzle, dainty by comparison to his thick snout. "Oh I dunno..." he drawls in a voice of encouragement, taking a few steps closer as he makes a act of admiring the verdant staining, "Its like o'bit of spring on the doorstep of fall." He chortles a note of merriment, "Brings out the color of your eyes.". Sage nod. At this time, Gomati's quipped retort gains Brutal's consideration, rewarding the vagrant she-wolf with a mock snort for her ungraciousness as Brutal turns his head to met her gaze, "Yeah, but I wasn't in the mood to hunt one." he protest in a playful chide. Finally turning his focus back to Althaea, the pale furred she-wolf gets his best smile as he barks a laugh, "No, rather I'm looking out for mine." Breaking away from the side of the deposited kill, Brutal makes his way to Althaea, giving her ears a few playful nips upon reaching her, "And you we're so lucky, dear. Except I think the bear better succeed in makeing a meal of you and Gomati."
Miakoda's eyes fluctuate between Althaea and Brutal as the two take turns poking fun at her, but the she-wolf shows no sign of hurt feelings or pouting. Instead, she drops the front paw that she had been using to rub along her muzzle and places it back against the earth with a melodramatic amount of dignity; simultaneously, she tips her wet nose high into the air and lets out a haughty sniff. "There's no need to take out your jealousy by way of snide remarks ... Not everyone is special enough to dye themselves green!" The facade is broken though when she sticks out the tip of her pink tongue and laughs, looking to Althaea a moment later ... or, more specifically, to her wounds. Given what Mia sees and the general demeanor of the other female, she deduces, "Looks like you must be feeling better. I'm glad to see it ... and it's why I came by. Just wanted to make sure you and your friend were doing okay." She glances toward Gomati before her eyes turn off down the path and once more Ikuna's words at the last pack meeting ring through her mind. Separate spaces for those who want them. Segregated dens. And this one is not hers. "Well ... take care, then. Sorry for the intrusion." With that, Mia turns and trots away, slipping off in near silence down the trail.
The rogue wolf looks over towards Miakoda and watches her head off not knowing what to say and did not find her as intruding. Gomati's green eyes are then fixed on Brutal and Althaea. "Brutal? What did you mean when you said, You think the bear better succeed in making a meal of Althaea and me? Were you serious?" She asks not thinking he was but the thought of it has her on edge.
Amused by the very thought of Brutal putting on some weight, Althaea chuckles. A little weight on a wolf has never hurt anyone.. as far as she was aware anyway. Inhaling a light breeze, the pale she-wolf huffs in retort to the males merriment toward Mia, all in fun an games she knows. Flicking her tail recklessly through the air, she tosses her attention toward the buck that she specifically asked for in not so many words. Her take on the kill is rather meek, shrugging a shoulder toward it. Bucks were foolish this time of year so she's not surprised, though she should be grateful to have anything at all. When Brutal approaches her she gives a 'look whose here' kind of smile. All his attention put on Mia's stained lips.. she head shakes. It was kinda funny but then again she's not the only one who stained. Side as colorful as the autumn leaves, Althaea is reluctant enough to give the burly wolf a nosing or two before stepping past him. "Perhaps the bear should of tried harder. He'd of gotten more than just a flank then." A coy smile passes over her muzzle, flicking the wolf's chin with her tail in passing, teasing. Moving toward the buck, she settles beside it silence. She could see the wound the took it down, the blow that ultimately ended its life. A sad thing really. Pawing at its belly, Althaea leans in biting at its soft tissue and tearing till its innards spilled over the ground. Pulling her muzzles from the open belly, she turns back to Miakoda just as she states her intrusion. Althaea did feel better hinting Mia's treatment a working success, but that does not mean her no longer welcome. The undergrowth was a place for anyone to venture into, even if its been known to house Brutal and herself these many moons. "Mia you are.." The chance to finish her words ends as quickly as they start. Another time perhaps. Ears swiveling to Gomati next, her worry over Brutal's words put into head shake, doubting the wolf meant anything rash. The buck becomes her next focus, its warm smell of blood causing a distinct amount of hunger.
Amusement appears yet again to Brutal's visage, features marred as they are, the massive wolf's humor is undeniable when Miakoda plays her part. It is more than could be expected and therefore all the greater appreciated, leading the dark male to send a wide grin in the she-wolf direction. He himself does not resort to any more witty remarks however, letting Miakoda finish the jest so that the entertainment isn't all at her expense. Besides, it is at this time that Brutal finds himself getting swished in the face by a bushy tail, distracting the one-tracked mind of the male species for a moment. As short lived as the tease is though, Althaea holds the gaze and attention of the burly wolf for a moment longer, while her remark in regards to the bear is rewarded with a roll of his eyes. "Not what I meant." he corrects, though seemingly needs to elaborate more what with Gomati's cautious concern as well. Though before he addresses the matter, Miakoda's departure pulls his yellow eyes back to the she-wolf former location, only to catch sight of her figure disappearing into the density of the undergrowth. For the first time this evening, a frown touches Brutal's muzzle as the big wolf just stares after her, disappointment caught upon his feature for a instant. He had hoped for her to stay, possibly eat, and wishfully even speak with him. If this new way of life for the Ute was ever to work, to ever be the thing of unity and mutual respect that Ikuna surely desires it to be, it was going to require some understanding from both sides. For now though, there isn't much that Brutal can do about Miakoda' avoidance, expect that the massive male does intend to do something. Turning away with a sigh, it isn't long before he remembers Gomati, who gains his interest once again and something of a patience smirk, "And be at ease, Gomati. I merely meant that between the talk of you and Althaea making a meal out of a bear, that the bear that attacked you come closer to making a meal out of the two of you."
Gomati finally giggles a little then says. "If the bear does show up again and we're not careful then that might be just what happens." Then her stomach lets her know that she's hungry, grumbling, and goes to eat some of the meat. Stopping for a moment to look over towards the male to say, "Thank you for the food. It is not a bear but it is still good." Then goes back to her share of the meat.
Althaea knew what Brutal had meant by his words, as confusing as they were. But they do not worry her as much as they seem the rogue who questions them. Oblivious to the eye rolling directed her way, likely for the best, she gives divided attention to the pair as they converse of the situation that could of been far worse that is was. Back and forth she looks, pausing on Brutal a moment watching him pose a frown to Mia's departure. Her actions here are a surprise but does he have to show so much interest the whole time she is here. A meeker sigh and she turns to the buck that's, by now, bled over her paws. Stepping through the blood, petite prints marking the way, she settles at an angle upon her stomach before tearing a piece of the carcass away from its foundation. Looking up as Gomati comes to join her, she smirks. Frankly she could eat this herself, but she'll be nice this time.
