The year is 1984. For the past year, deep in the basement of Flynn’s Arcade, buried within stolen hardware, a new world has been growing. The Grid. What is one year in the real world is fifty within the system. Fifty Cycles full of rapid expansion, cities erupting from the empty wastelands to shine under the storm-laden sky. A renaissance is on the horizon, the stability of the Grid assured by the Administrators who guide and protect the programs within. The Cycles have not been without struggle, but overall life is good. With the directive of the Creator and the aid of his Administrators, the Grid flourishes.
Then they came. First one, then two, then four, then eight… they came from the sea. The ISOs. Isomorphic Algorithms. The inhabitants of the Grid watch with mixed wonder and shock. Never had they seen this. Never fathomed programs possessing of free will, void of purpose and User alike. Slowly have the ISOs begun to try and integrate, uncertainty ripe both among their own and the Basics they seek to live beside. Arjia City is their sanctuary, a place of peace and a beacon to the ISO enclaves that eek out places among the great cities of the Grid.
Some Basics have found peace with the ISOs, preparing for a new revelation and bright future. Others turn a worried eye to their new neighbors. How can a being without purpose belong in a system driven by it? How can perfection and stability be achieved when the unknowable, the chaotic, come without warning? Like the storms above, the Grid churns with uncertain and nervous energy. Change is coming … Change is already here.
