Characters Involved:
Haze, male wolf
Larkspur, female wolf
Setting:
Starts at the Isolated Oasis, ends up at the Two-River Fork
Larkspur rises with a yawn, stretching slowly. She shakes some snow from her paws before giving her whole body a vigorous shake. It's nearing mid-day, and she feels a twinge of hunger. The shewolf's tail sways placidly as she observes the peaceful, pure white snow. After a moment, though, the female notices another feeling creeping into her mind. She can't quite name it, but it feels a little like lonliness. Though she loves Haze, and loves being with him...but something is missing. Her family. It seems like ages since she's seen them. The wolf sits in the snow, unusually quiet as she tries to remember exactly when she saw them last.
The she-wolf's young male companion has been struck with a wanderlust himself lately, Haze often feeling the urge to just walk around for several hours at a time. He's here now, though, pawing at the frozen edges of the small little pond in the middle of the desert, scratching up some ice shavings to lap at. After a moment, he pads back over to the female, lowering his head to lick affectionately at her cheek. "You okay?" he inquires, head tilting as he notices the somewhat wistful look in her eyes.
The female is quick to return his affection with a nuzzle. Just to have him near comforts her, and she seems to cheer up slightly when she seems him. "I was just thinking about my family." As she replies, her gaze drifts toward Lazlui and her nostalgia returns. Though she makes an effort for her voice to sound nonchalant, she can't hide anything from Haze. Her tone isn't terribly convincing, but she doesn't appear to mind overly much.
Haze follows Larkspur's gaze back towards the woods to the north, then returns his eyes to his companion. "You miss them?" he inquires gently...he's not really had much to miss of his own family background, so this isn't something he can relate to her much on, unfortunately. But at least the boy understands her own desire to see her kin again. "We can go back and see them, if you want. Might be a nice way to spend the rest of this cold winter," he offers, giving her a soft little smile.
Larkspur's muzzle splits into a wide grin at the suggestion, and her tail whips excitedly from side to side. She nuzzles his neck before replying, "Oh, I'd just /love/ to see them again. I haven't seen them in ages...Can we leave now?" The shewolf is clearly excited by the idea, and she seems ready to start the trip back to Lazuli with her usual enthusiasm.
Haze can't help but laugh at the girl's eagerness. "Sure, I don't see why not." He has nothing tying him here (or anywhere, for that matter) except for Larkspur herself -- and where she wants to go, he'll follow. He turns towards the north, waiting for her to start moving that way as well before quickly falling into place beside her.
Smile growing wider, the wolf bounds forward in a spray of snow. Lark's pace is fast, fueled by the thought of seeing her loved ones again. her excitement has made her impatient, and her strides are hurried. The female's eyes are alight with happiness and she knows that the familiarity of her old home can't come soon enough.
The snow is lighter here, most of the frozen liquid clumped around the little oasis where there's actually water in the midst of the dry desert. The ground is still cold, though, the sand packed tight from a recent frost. Haze trots along beside Larkspur, his hazel eyes naturally drawn up to the tall vertical spire in the middle of the vast nothingness, curiously wondering about the various mysterious symbols drawn and etched along its surface. He's quiet for now, just taking in the surroundings as the pair walks along.
Larkspur slows to look at the mysterious carvings, simultaneously interested and unnerved. Something about them is so blatantly unnatural that she can't help but be drawn in, but their strangeness makes her uneasy. She makes a soft 'hmm' of interest, but it is clear she does not want to linger here. Not only because of her desire to reach Lazuli, but the general vibe of the place. The farther away they are from it, the better.
Haze angles slightly northwest, heading away from the unusual butte and turning more towards what's left of the scraggly clumps of grass this way south of the river. There's still a bit of green among all the brown, but most of the foliage has faded away until spring. The male glances over at his companion, inquiring as they walk along, their pace a little slower now after the distance they've covered so quickly. "I think once we reach the river bordering the forest up north, that'd be a good place to rest...then we can cover the last leg of the journey pretty quickly when we're ready." His muzzle turns up in a sardonic grin. "Try not to fall in again this time, okay?"
Larkspur nods to Haze's first statement, but her eyes widen when he asks her not to fall in. It only takes a split second for a smile to bloom on her lips and she giggles a little before replying, "I won't make any promises. Besides, there's nothing to be scared of. I know you'd save me." The shewolf streches to administer a loving nuzzle to her companian, still grinning.
Haze grins big at the nuzzle, his tail wagging happily behind him -- seems the male is still just a big puppy at heart, especially when it comes to affection from his new mate. "Yeah, I think we're both big enough now to prevent that from happening again." Even so, he's still got an instinctive fear of any rushing bodies of water, having almost lost a loved one twice to river currents. He looks forward once again, trying to figure out the fastest route to their next destination.
Larkspur can't help but beam when she sees Haze so joyful. "Let's hope so, hmm?" she murrs. The wolf scents the air, and feels her excitement return as she realizes how near the river is. Though she is as enthusiastic as ever to reach Lazuli, the shewolf is also looking forward to a bit of a rest. The landscape usually bristles with tall grass, and it's a little bizarre to see it replaced with a blanket of snow.
Haze can see the river just ahead now, and isn't so completely phobic about it that he attempts to avoid it -- after all, it's unavoidable if they want to get back to Lazuli lands, anyway. But even so, he's not really wanting to linger around the rushing water any longer than necessary. He picks up the pace a bit, wanting to get past the obstacle before they stop to rest.
Larkspur notices Haze's eagerness to leave the river and gives him a look to see if he's ok. The male doesn't necessarily seems scared, or terribly upset, so she says nothing and continues moving. She keeps an eye on the water and slows. It seems calmer here and she offers, "This seems like a good place to cross." It's a suggestion. If Haze isn't comfortable with it, they don't have tocross. Truth be told, it makes her a little nervos to be so near to the water that were such an impact on her life. Here, though, it's not so terrifying.
Haze is doing all right, particularly with the slower current found here, and nimbly leaps over the icy cold creek to the other side. He glances back at Larkspur with a big lopsided grin, apparently quite proud of himself for being able to do such a thing without chickening out in front of his companion -- a /girl/, no less. "We'll stop right up here," he says, gesturing over towards the crux between the merging rivers.
Larkspur can't help but return the smile, her tail swinging quickly. Mimicing the male, she jumps the water with ease. "Sounds great," the wolf replies, administering a gentle nuzzle and walking slowly toward the spot Haze indicated.
Arriving at the fork between the rivers, Haze glances around, and, finding no one else inhabiting the area nearby, figures this is as good a place as any to call it a night. He pads over to a particularly comfy-looking patch of grass, and flops down on his side. Glancing back over at the she-wolf, he grins as he asks: "How's it feel to be back nearer to home?"
Larkspur says, "Great!" Lark says sincerely. A content smile rests on her lips as she eases herself onto the ground beside him. The shewolf presses against her mate, enjoying the sensation of him so near. She lays down, relaxing her tired muscles. Though her body is weary, her mind is still buzzing with excitement at the thought of seeing her family again."
