[Lupin's first real RP since returning to the MUCK. :3]
Hinto, male adult rogue wolf.
Lupin, female adult rogue wolf.
Winding Slope
=============================================
The incline of rocky woods leads up to a forested pathway, the same made by the small woodland paths below. it's fairly large for a natural path, showing the usage of it. The ground is still slightly rocky, with only a few plate-like rocks sitting about. The trees are still the same, conifers more plentiful in the sloping pathway. The packed rocky soil aims up, turning into a long and useful path to the flats of the mountainous hills. The path is curved, winding through and across the grounds, a few smaller ways branching back down and some up. The slope here leads all to the top of the land.
=============================================
Finally she has decided to venture forth. Lupin walks near the path, though instict drives her to avoid following directly upon it, treading with soft, silent steps. The wolfess is hunting, or will be, and is already preparing herself mentally for the chase. Her breathing pattern is loud in her head, and her tail sways behind her rhythmically as she keeps time with her pawsteps. Ears flitting around her tensely, she continues onward down the slope, her eyes keeping watch for anything worthy as prey that may be nearby.
Hinto is heading north, away from the mountains. He is gazing around for prey of his own. His hunger has driven him this far. He is surprised that he had to go this far. He hopes he won't be tresspassing on anyone else's territory. The world is a tremendous muddle of scents.
The she-wolf pauses suddenly as a scent hits her nose. A hare. Lupin lowers her lithe body towards the ground, ears rotating to face the animal as she nearly army-crawls around a bush, where she sees the rabbit near her, it's back facing the wolf, oblivious. Perfect. The female narrows her eyes, focusing all of her attention upon the creature, rather than upon her surroundings, in the intensity of her hunger. Then a sound close by; Lupin curses whomever dealt it. The hare's ears shoot up, glancing around itself swiftly in surprise. Before her chance is gone, the she-wolf launches herself forward towards the creature, attempting to snap her jaws directly upon its small body.
But not before another wolf, a male, takes the hare himself and clenches his jaws down on the kill. His hunt has been successful. And he almost lost the hare to another wolf! Hunting can be rather competitive. Hinto finally sets the dead hare on the ground in front of him, ready to dine.
Lupin is caught off guard as her target is suddenly.. gone! A flash of color flies by her just as she's sent flying in the opposite direction, lacking the hare in her jaws. Spinning around swiftly, the she-wolf flashes piercing golden eyes towards the spot where she had just aimed for - now, a few feet from that spot, is another wolf. A wolf.. with /her/ rabbit. Lupin bares her fangs angrily, growling in low silvery tones, "How /dare/ you steal my hare!" Maybe it wasn't exactly /hers/, but to her it was!
"I'm sorry, but this was my hare, I've been tracking it for some time! And... well... you were slower." Hinto says simply before leaning down and biting into the hare and chewing it hungrily. He doesn't seem to pay Lupin any heed until most of the hare is gone.
The wolfess continues to stare at him, her wrath spiking to a cresendo as he has the gall to completely ignore her. As he eats /her/ hare. Lupin stands silently for a moment, hackles raised, until she manages to calm herself to a decent degree. Quietly, the female steps forward and without a word, reaches down to snatch the remains of the rabbit off the ground into her mouth. It hangs out in barely connected bits that he hasn't eaten yet, and she proceeds to swings her head around, moving off in the opposite direction with the hare in her mouth.
Hinto isn't going to passively let the female take his kill away from him and trots swiftly after her. "Hey now, that's my food! I killed it, that makes it mine!"
Lupin lets out a faint snort through her nostrils, her mouth at the moment being unavailable to reply to him. She keeps moving for a little while longer, until she finally drops the hare at her paws, turning to Hinto patiently and with a slight smirk. "I'm sorry, I believe the rule was that whoever /had/ the hare got to keep it." Then, reaching down, she takes a bite from the creature, ripping it free from the body.
Hinto frowns at this... presumptuous female. He darts down to snatch what's left of the hare back. It's his. He killed it. She stole it from *him!* Let her kill her own hare! Geez!
She sees him coming from the corner of her eyes; biting the creature's fur swiftly, Lupin pulls the other direction, trying to avoid him grabbing the hare, and hopefully getting it out of his reach in time. Sure she's being a jerk, but she's stubborn! She /wants/ this hare, for all she knows, it /was/ hers first!
Hinto doesn't let go either, so it degenerates into an immature game of tug of war between the two wolves. Hinto can't say anything.
This isn't going /anywhere/. Finally, Lupin pulls hard, then simply - let's go. Her eyes are nearly flaming; she's /not/ a happy wolf right now. Tail swishing briskly, she watches to see the result.
Hinto loses his balance and backpedals before, yelping, dropping,t eh meat and flopping onto his back. Ouch!
Lupin's lips pull back into a smirk as she observes the male's ungraceful fall. With a delicate movement, the she-wolf makes her way over to the other wolf, her expression smug. "Why, thank you." She lowers her head to give Hinto a swift lick across the muzzle before turning and snatching at the meat, eating it up in a few quick bites.
Hinto blushes a bit after the lick. That was not something the male had expected. Hinto finally rolls over onto his paws and shakes off his fur and blinks. "Come on, that wasn't fair!" Hinto exclaims.
She tilts her head slightly to glance back at Hinto, a faint grin upon her maw as she licks the reminents of the meat from her lips. "Oh please," Lupin smirks, turning and walking back towards him. "The lady should get the meal, anyways, right?" She chuckles, shaking her head. She's not /mean/. Just... stubborn.
Hinto looks a tad indignant. Offended definitely. "Where is that a rule?" Hinto says, "All I know is you stole food I rightfully caught!" Hinto sits down and, yes, pouts.
"Now don't be that way," Lupin chuckles lightly, sitting down beside him and giving him a playful shove. 'Kay, so she can flare up a bit when /she's/ the victim, but when it all goes her way, she's just as sweet as can be. Glancing over sideways at Hinto, the she-wolf mimics his irritated pout. "If you want, you can steal another hare. Maybe the second time you would steal it from someone who would let you have it?"
Hinto looks at the female. He sighs. It was a tasty hare, too. And it was *his.* "I didn't steal the hare, I caught it fair and square." Hinto says. "You're just... just... mean!"
Lupin raises one eyebrow at him, inquiringly. A purely innocent expression sweeps across her delicate face as she asks, "Mean? I'm sorry.." She shifts her paws beneath her into a more comfortable position; once she decides to amend a situation, she'll be here all day and all night.
Hinto keeps a wary eye on the female. Now what does she want? Isn't she done here now that she ate the hare? Then he realizes what the female just said. "You... you are?" Hinto asks.
She lets a soft smile crawl across her muzzle as she nods slowly, "I apologize for my outburst and rude behavior..." Lupin sighs and leans on her left side. "When I'm hunting, I put myself into a certain mood, and if I'm put off balance while in that mood, I often let myself act in ways I'm not fond of." The wolfess tilts her head in his direction, watching his face carefully.
Hinto looks at the female curiously. "I'm... sorry too." Hinto says. "I mean... for not letting you catch the hare..." Hinto says. "Though, you really do have to speed up or another wolf might take your lunch away again."
Psh, speed up? And he was doing /so/ well for a little while, there! Lupin shakes her head slowly, letting out a light chuckle, "Right, that's probably true.. I haven't hunted alongside anyone for a long time, and so I am unused to having to look out for someone else grabbing my target before I do." Gesturing north, she adds, "Living on the plateau does that. There is never anyone hunting at the same time."
"You are alone?" Hinto asks nervously. Unless she belongs to a pack. He's not sure what he would want this female to be. A kindred spirit perhaps. "Or do you have a family to speak of? Friends?"
She nods in response to his first question, golden eyes shifting to the side thoughtfully. "Yes, I am alone. Occasionally I will have a guest come up and meet me upon the plateau, but otherwise I am quite by myself." As for family, or friends.. "No, I do not have a family," Lupin sighs, smiling humorlessly. "My birth pack is far from here, and I have not found another here. Friends I /do/ have.. they are easier to keep." She chuckles. "What about yourself; do you have a family of your own, or any close?"
Hinto shakes his head and looks down. It was a sad moment in his life to lose his mate and unborn pups. "No... I lost everyone." Hinto says. "Pack destroyed itself... and... my mate..." Hinto closes his eyes trying to forget.
Lupin tilts her head, eyes narrowing at his words. "Oh," she murmurs quietly, "I'm sorry." The she wolf looks down at her paws and uses one to claw at the dirt idly. "... How long ago?" she asks, glancing up briefly to catch his expression; if he looked upset or distressed about it, she'd backpedal out of there as quickly as she could.
"Well, my pack was destroyed when I was a pup... and I was barely an adult when I lost my mate... and... the pups." Hinto says. "I can never forget that day." Hinto says. "It's impossible."
She nods absently, her thick gray tail still now, rather than gently sweeping the ground. "I'm sure you will never forget," Lupin says in a low, soft voice. "You /shouldn't/ forget. It should remain with you.. but the pain will, I hope, not be quite as powerful over time." Had it been a different occurance, or if he had been a female, Lupin would here nuzzle against them sympathetically.. but with the topic at hand, she decides to refrain.
"She was beautiful." Hinto says. "But, as a result of These tragedies, I've been alone my entire life. Well, almost my entire life. Could never settle into a pack, I always had to keep moving."
Lupin hmms softly. "I know what you mean; packs don't offer too much in the way of sympathy, or comfort, as much as decent security and structure." She looks over his way with warm golden eyes, pondering questions to ask, and whether she should actually ask them. For now, she remains quiet, letting him speak about his past without any prodding. Which is definitely nice when one is willing to talk, without having to be asked the 'right' questions.
"Three years." Hinto finally says. "That's how long I've been without real companionship." Hinto says. He had been wandering all over, and he just recently saw the mountains and discovered a fear of cougars. "I can only imagine how you feel."
The she-wolf would understand the fear instilled by the cougar all too well. Lupin could understand a lot of what he says. But three years is much different when you went from having a mate, to being alone, rather than being alone relatively by choice. "Perhaps one day, you will find another mate, and you will never be without companionship again," she suggests, though adds, "Until then, you may always take refuge in friends. Or strangers with friend potential." She winks at him in a friendly fashion.
Hinto looks at Lupin. She is being an all-around comforting presence. Now he wished he had let her have the hare. He is happy in teh end she did at least get some of it. From now on he'll share. He has only one word he wants to direct toward Lupin.
"Friend?"
Lupin chuckles lightly, nodding in agreement. "Yes," she smiles, "Friend." Even with the rough start they had, she has no problem with making up in a matter of one conversation. Besides, everyone needs friends, right? Then Lupin glances around her, eyes shifting along the slope, and she stands upon her paws, stretching. "While I enjoy speaking with you, a fraction of a hare will not quite be enough to keep me going," she grins. "I do need to go hunting a bit more before the night continues on too much further. However, should you ever desire company, please feel free to join me upon the plateau. I'll be there for a good long time, I think."
Hinto nods. He considers asking to join her, but he is sure she wishes to hunt alone. "I shall meet you there, in fact. Best of luck on your hunt. Don't let any other wolf take your food."
The she-wolf smiles to him as she gets to her paws, shaking her fur out once up and shifting herself around a bit to get blood flowing back into her limbs. "Very good, I will see you there," Lupin nods, eyes twinkling as she begins moving towards the east. "And I'll be sure not to," she chuckles as she dips her head to him in farewell, and makes her way off on the hunt.
