Synopsis: Continues Inali & Takata's story arch through the flood. More headaches for Harper -- Flicker and Terri decide to engage in a personal conversation right outside of his home!
--- Old Chestnut Tree ---
Inali sleeps soundly that evening. Momentarily, the thought of Takata and her flight escapes her. Although she can get over the awkwardness of the night before, and she feels safe with Harper, that memory won't be a kind one to wake to. But before all of that, when she finally wakes up, morning is well under way. Her crusty eyes slowly open and she finds herself shocked by how much she could sleep, even after so much sleep the day before. Boy, she's gonna be groggy.
Harper is inside the den, but he hasn't been inside all morning like Inali, having gone out to forage for insects and berries and other small things. He does manage to catch a vole to bring back to Inali, and it's sitting there in front of her when she wakes up. Harper himself is laying calmly on his stomach, watching over the female seeing as he has nothing better to do. And with all the recent trouble, he feels like he should just stay closer to her.
Leaves rustle and a tailtip can be seen now and then as one Flicker trots into the area. She pauses just at the fringes and big foxy ears perk up as she rises onto hinds a little to peer around curiously, though it's the tree that gets a lingering look, head tilting.
Inali looks sleepily up and around, slowly uncoiling. She sees the vole first, and sniffs it lightly. Harper second, whom she acknowledges with a smile. He is closer than he was when she fell asleep. She would have figured he had watched over her all morning, if the vole wasn't proof otherwise. He probably didn't leave her long, for fear Sanguine would return. "Good morning," she says, as well mannered as she can be.
"You as well," Harper returns with a small nod. "I hope you slept well. This den is safe as long as I'm in it." Apparently he's much more on guard given how many visitors have decided to show up right in this area. "The vole's for you. Is there anything else you need?" For all his anti-social tendencies, he's being awfully hospitable. He must have extended his umbrella of protection to her. She and Gabe are the only creatures he considers friends right now.
The flutter of leaves stops as Flicker clears the treeline and emerges to the clearing, though she pauses, as wary as anyone else at the sight of strangers. Her eyes widen and she sniffs at the air, tail flicking a little as her little claws curl into the dirt, yup, ready to bolt.
It's strange waking up again in Harper's den, under his protective wing again after so long. He's exactly the fox she used to know. Although now, he does seem quite a bit more friendly to her. Before it seemed as a sort of obligation, and now... well, he actually seems to /like/ her. He lowers her head and sniffs the vole again before taking a bite out of it. Well, more like a nibble. There isn't much meat but, then, she probably wouldn't eat much. "Thanks, Harper." This time, she'll be sure to truly /appreciate/ his hospitality. As best as she can, though. She admits the situation still feels somewhat awkward.
Harper bows his head silently, graciously accepting her thanks. "I figured you'd need it once you woke up. Seems we've both had some rather... unsettling experiences recently." Her much more so than him, since he's the one doing the guarding. "But you can stay as long as you like." He smirks. "Just as long as no more foxes come trailing behind you. I never really expected to even find other foxes in this part of the woods."
Flicker is so focused on the misshapen tree that she doesn't notice a bee making a nice little pit stop on her hip. It's not until the bugger plants the stinger that she suddenly YIPS and jumps straight up into the air, almost catlike, turning a near flip. Landing isn't much better as another buzz startles her and she scrambles to her feet and spins around, "Ow ow ow..getttt away!" she chitters, running while looking back, which generally spells demise. Indeed, a root catches her front paws and she finds herself on her chest with hinds in the air, skidding along the ground, until momentum fades and she flumps back down in a heap, tail up over her back and covering her face. Huff.
Inali smiles at Harper and shakes her head. "Oh, don't worry," she muses. "I think I saw all the foxes here I even knew! I don't think there -are- any others!" She lets out a soft chuckle and nibbles on another side of the vole... when she hears, suddenly, another fox yip and chitter right outside the den. She looks up at the entrance now quite surprised before placing a paw on her forehead, shaking it.
Harper jumps up into an action pose when the noise enters the burrow. But instead of fear or surprise, he actually looks a little angry. Obviously, it can't be anything except yet another fox. That's all that ever seems to come and visit around here anyway! "What could it be *now?*" he grumbles to himself as he heads outside, expecting Inali to remain behind. She's had enough trouble for a while. "Hey!" he calls out. "What's all the noise out here?!"
For a third time she's startled and Flicker scrambles to her feet with a yip, trying to jerk her tail back off her head so she can see who or what is talking. The tree?!?! She does that backpeddle dance and scootches, "Bee.. a bee.. I..." and she stills, and quiets then inhales. "Sorry.." she says, not quite so carefree as a few moments before, no, decidedly becoming more bristly as she looks at the male.
Inali keeps her head perked up, but doesn't get up or follow him. She peers curiously up into the exit of the den. Yesterday was awkward, but if this keeps up, she will honestly start to find this all amusing. She has to wonder, though, why Harper hates other foxes so much. They're just the best creature to get into his business, she supposes.
Harper glares at Flicker when he spots her, shaking his head slowly. More and more distractions! He just wants to live in peace, can't they all understand that? "Very well then. If you're quite all right, please vacate this area. This is my home, and I don't really appreciate uninvited guests barging in like they've been doing all day long!"
Terri aproaches where she thinks flicker might be she wants to talk with her daughter to make sure she is going to be alright. she is worried that flicker may not be ready to leave the den. she has expressed her concerns with braxton now she wants to talk with her daughter
Flicker swallows hard and her ears tilt back as she starts backing away again, "S-sorry.." she says, fear passing through her eyes for a moment a Harper snips at her. She stumbles back a little and away from the den then pauses and gets her bearings, looking around.
"Hmph. Yes. Well. Carry on then," Harper says, finding this satisfactory. She knows she should just get going and, trusting her to listen to his directions, he retreats back down into the burrow. "Another fox," he says with a rueful, humorless roll of his eyes. "Probably one of the children of Braxton, given her age and his proximity. Ahh... I never thought others would just drop into my lap like this. I wonder if it's for better or worse you ended up running into them all at once."
Terri spots flicker and barks a greeting as she breaks into a run spotting her daughter she only caught a glimps of the male she wonders who that was she shrugs as she aproaches flicker and rushes to give her a nuzzle like she always does. she says "oh flicker glad I found you"
Flicker looks up to her mother and mrrrs softly before returning the nuzzle, "Hello.." she murmurs, quietly, taking a few more steps away from Mister Cranky's den. "How are you? Is something wrong?"
Inali looks down at her paws again. Oooh, what she has brought? But just as she was about to feel bad again, she remembers something Braxton said. "Wait, is... could she be the one that was missing?" Inali slowly gets up. "Did she give a name?" Without waiting for Harper's response, she calls up. "Hey! What's your name!"
Harper glances back up the den entrance as Inali seems intent on contacting them. Hold up... is that *another fox* up there? Now he's just getting angry! But he's in no mood to start a scene with ladies present, and instead only contents himself with sighing bad temperedly and waiting for all of this to be sorted out.
Terri smiles and says "nothings wrong who where you talking to I hope it is a friend" her ears perk hearing inali she says "oh hello I am terri and my daughter flicker are up here did you need something?" curios as to who is down in the den she says to flicker "actually I wanted to speak with you about ow you felt about leaving the den I mean I wanted to make sure you where ready for it"
From a tree, an unusually colored bird silently watches the party of foxes. "What is going on..." She tilts her head. Why is her home suddenly the center of attraction for foxes? One or two fluffies was enough, but this is getting rediculous. "You leave for one little..." The bird, of course, is Gabriel. She sits on a high branch for several minutes before swooping down to a lower one as Inali shouts something. A brief while longer, Gabriel feels she's heard enough. With a frustrated little chatter, she takes wing and again flies north.
Flicker looks up and smiles at Terri, nodding her head, "Oh good.." then she too looks to the voice in the den, though her mother answers. At Terri's question she nods her head, "As I'll ever be.." she says softly, averting her eyes a little. She grins up at the bird then watches her flit away, wishing for wings herself.
Inali slowly walks up the den entrance, now passing Harper on the way. "Oh jeez," she starts, "I guess I'll take care of this." Harper *did* ask kindly for whoever is up there to leave. She rests her bottom at the entrance of the den and looks out. Ooh, still so bright. Where'd night go? Did she really sleep so long? She shutters. Hm. Terri. The fox didn't mention a 'Terri'. Must be his mate? This was a little confusing. She turns to address Flicker, getting back off her bum. "There was a fox here yesterday, yelling all sorts of nonsense, something about lost children? Are you lost?"
Harper lingers behind this time, as he figures Inali would have a better handle on this than him. He'd just tell them to go away, after all. He flicks his tail and lies down, keeping a close eye on Inali. Can't they just leave them be? It's obvious Sanguine has moved on, and the only trouble left is finding the other two kits. So why hang around *his* place?
Terri smiles and says to her daughter "you dont sound like you are ready be honest you dont feel ready do you?" she looks at flicker carefully wanting her to be open as she says "because if your not ready I am sure you could stay a bit longer with us I mean I dont want you setting out on your own if you are not completely ready" looking back towards inali she says "oh you must have met my mate braxton um no this is my other daughter flicker. um who is this I am talking to?"
Flicker smiles and nods, "Is anyone ever really overjoyed about it?" she asks, grinning. She's trying to be a little brave, her father wants her out, it's time she got out. "That male in there doesn't want anyone in this particular area apparently.. so this won't be my new neighborhood.."
Inali is honestly taken back by the conversation between the mother and daughter. She backs up toward the entrance again and sits down, looking deep in thought. Wow... why didn't *her* mother let Inali leave the den when she was 'ready'? She was so young, and, her mom just grew tired of her, bared her fangs, and forced her to go. She shakes out of her dazed thoughts as Terri addresses her. Inali had honestly not even gotten Flicker's name, though Braxton had probably given it. "Ah." It was now obvious that Flicker was the one that Sanguine had... ahem. "Oh, erm. Inali," she confesses. Inali had already gotten a talk from Braxton about Ossian. Now she is meeting his mom? "He is just trying to take care of me because I am sick," she explains.
Harper honestly can't see why they're having this conversation here of all places! And when he sees that the talk is starting to upset Inali, *he* gets more upset. "That's true. Inali is under my care," he agrees, stepping forward. "I really hate to break up this nice reunion, but... honestly, if this talk can be held elsewhere, can it be... *taken* elsewhere?"
Terri smiles as she says "I know you arwe unhappy about it but many good things can come from growing up you can become independant find a mate. maybe even have a familly your self. I know you hafta leave us at some point because well if you dont what will happen when me and your father die?" she nuzzles her daughter and says "I love you alot and only want you to be happy. I know this may seem like a bad thing but its not and you dont hafta be in a rush to do it if you dont feel your ready for it we wont make you leave. I have spoken with your father and we both dont want you to think we are doing this just to get rid of you um what I am trying to say is we dont want you to leave if you are not ready." she sighs hoping her daughter understands her meaning she says "when you leave we want you to do it on your own and only when your ready" she nuzzzles her daughter as she turns back to inali reconizing the name she says "oh your kaira friend and the one ossian went to see oh I just remember what
Flicker glances at her mother then frowns, "I don't want a mate..I.. am just going to help take care of those who need it.." she says a bit vaguely. "Soon as I find a suitable place.. I'll make a den and.. it'll be fine, I know you love me.." she says with a nod. She glances toward Inali and by virtue of proximity, Harper then she mrrrs to her mother, "Lets go before he gets mad.." she says with a wary sort of shiver.
Inali watches in awe how they just keep going. She shakes her head. This is beginning to give her a headache again. She is actually starting to empathize with Harper's anti-social nature. "Okay, not a good place to settle domestic issues." She turns back just to give Terri a passing glance when she mentions Ossian and Kaira. Kaira? She can't remember a Kaira. It's after all, been a -very- long time to her since she met her, and it was not on 'friendly' terms. "Yes, Braxton talked to me all about that," she heaves a sigh, "before Harper here chased him off," she chuckles again and starts to slip back into the den. "I needa get some sleep!"
With that, Flicker and Terri quietly leave.
Harper watches the other foxes finally, finally retreat to give them some peace and silence. He follows Inali back into the den, waiting for a time when he'll have to get them both dinner or the like. At last he can enjoy his beloved den and all the silence it brings. He swears that the next fox, or any other creature, bear or bobcat or beetle, will get a bite on the nose instead of a polite request to leave. He's had enough racket.
Inali nuzzles up again, but doesn't go to sleep. She just rests. Enough sleep for her. Just needs ta lay down. She's never seen any fox just go on like that! In a way, maybe she was glad her mother -wasn't- like her. She sighs. She doesn't feel it necessary to break the silence again. Harper seems to be perfectly happy with the new found piece and quiet. So she just enjoys it while it lasts, a light little whistle escaping her nose the only sound now but a rustle of leaves.
