Den of Roots
================================================================================
Nestled between a particularly large tree and the steeply sloping mountainside of the glen, there is an earthy gap amongst the thickly tangled roots. This opening gives way to a tunnel, only wide enough for an adult wolf to crawl down in a low crouch, about five feet long. The tunnel widens out into a cozy cave, large enough for perhaps two grown wolves to curl together in a rather cramped style, or for one wolf and her litter, which is, of course, the purpose of the den. Pine needles and leaves litter the floor of the den, as well as bits of shredded roots, the source of which dangle from the walls and ceiling.
============================================
Silver slips down into the den after having stepped out for just a moment to get a quick drink and relieve herself. She left the pups in a pile of dark fur, indistinguishable from eachother. Where one ends and the other begins is only truly distinguishable by scent in the darkness of the den, and it likely looks like a rather lumpy, fuzzy ball. She smiles as she sees them, eyes glittering in what little light ekes in from the tunnel behind her. She sighs softly, sending a silent prayer to Luna that these five precious pups survive through all the hardships that can befall them, that they make it to adulthood and are healthy and happy. She steps delicately over them and settles down carefully to curl her body around their furpile, chuckling to herself as she marvels at how tiny they are.
Lexus's nose raises up as the smell of mum returns and ultimately comes to rest around their little lump of pups. He wiggles his way in that direction, go over his brothers and sister if needed in an attempt to get to the warmest spot he can find.
Liam's life will never be this simple again. Shrouded in darkness, kept warm by his brothers and sisters, the pup has only a few basic necessities and is blissfully unaware of the dangerous world outside the den. Right now, he is nestled among his family, leaning against and protecting his only sister. His whimpers turn to tiny, irritated growls as his world morphs from black to murky gray. Liam buries his head between his forepaws, rubbing them against his eyes. He lifts his head but his view of the world has not improved. "Ga-ah," he utters, and then stiffens warily. It's the first time he has heard the sound of his own voice. He turns and presses his nose protectively against his sister. Soon, there is noise. The ground beneath him vibrates, and he is immediately engulfed in the sound and feel of his mother. Comfortable where he is, he lifts his head and gives a big yawn.
Haben is, at the moment, fast asleep and nuzzled quietly in the pile of fur. Right now, it doesn't matter how dangerous the world outside is. What matters is that he's warm and sleeping in a big forest of fur. That is, however, until his brother thinks it would be a good idea to walk over him to get to who knows where. Waking up quickly, Haben lets out a small whimper for being so suddenly awakened from his peaceful sleep. Oh is Lexus going to get it for waking him up... one of these days.
Smallest of the bunch, nestled amongst her brothers, little Sierra is sleeping peacefully until someone moves, jostling her. She lets out a squeak of protest, lifting her blunt snout to blindly sniff at the air. She senses the change in the air, the dull thuds of her mother's footfalls, the temperature rising. She senses the increased warmth of the entity that is "Mother" and turns in that direction, stretching out tiny paws and clutching at the earth beneath her to try to move closer. She discovers her brother Liam pressed against her, recognizes his scent amongst the others pressed in around her. It's comfortable here, but Mother is warmth and food, so she starts wriggling that way, squirming from beneath her siblings, grunting at the exhertion.
Silver chuckles softly at the little sounds coming from her pups. She dips her muzzle to nose at them gently as they start to stir and move closer, brushing her tongue warmly over one and then the next, each in turn, grooming gently. "Hungry, hmm?" Those who are making the first efforts to get to her belly, she nuzzles closer, helping them along, and focuses her grooming on those who stay bundled together for now.
The whines of Lexus' siblings fall on (semi) deaf ears as he happily drags himself over Haben and nudges anything else in his way until his nose finally connects with mum. He moves to huddle on close before this giant slobbery thing comes down and licks him. A whine of protest is made and as soon as it's gone and he unscrunches his face something seems to be different, blurry shapes of grey invade his safe little world of black and he lifts his head, turning it around to try and work out what's going on.
Liam feels his sister wriggling away from him, taking most of the warmth with her. He starts to follow her, but is stopped mid-journey by his mother's tongue. All along, his vision is growing lighter, with shapes shimmering in and out of view. Mother finishes grooming him and he can vaguely see the shape of her head pull away, though he does not recognize that that's what it is. "Wah," he says again, making noises as he crawls closer and closer. He finds himself at his mother's belly, next to his sister once again.
Haben lets out another small whine as Lexus continues to walk over him. Once he's finally off, Haben gets up and tries to walk towards his brother only to be stopped halfway by something large and damp. Once it's gone, however, Haben notices that, instead of his usual world of total darkenss he's used to, he is now surrounded by colors of gray. Just like his brother, Haben is a little taken aback by the sudden change and starts to look around until his eyes fall upon his mother. Even though he doesn't know what it is, he makes his way over towards the blury shape of his mother to see what it is. It's only when Haben gets closer does he realize the scent of his mother and he lets out a small squeak of realization. Feeling cold and alone again, he starts to make his way towards Silver again, looking for some warmth.
( Sierra feels the warmth of her brothers moving away as they move toward Mother. Even in her infancy, she knows what that means...It means food. It means scrambling over eachother weakly for a teat. With a whine, she struggles forward, straining herself to keep up with her larger brothers. Through the strain, she too experiences a change, and it gives her momentary pause. What's...what is that? A faint, foggy light breaks through the darkness. Vague shapes, blurry images. She shakes her head, trying to clear away the odd sensation. It doesn't go away, and she squeaks and whimpers in fear. Her mother hears her cries and leans forward to nudge the single female pup in amongst her brothers at Silver's belly. It takes a moment, but Sierra manages to find a nipple that is unoccupied. Mercifully, the thick fur of mom's belly blocks out that evil and confusing light, and the little girlpup lets out a relieved sigh. Silver nudges the rest of the pups in close, curling about them a bit, bringing her thick, bushy tail across their little backs. "I wonder what you'll all look like," she muses softly. All the pups are identical at this age, dark-furred, blue-eyed, flop-eared. It's not until they're several weeks old that they start to look different. (Sierra and Silver in one pose)
Lexus sniffs the air, slowly working things out. That big blob smells like mum, the place where the cold from is the lightest so clearly, light equals cold!...Ok, so he may not have everything worked out but the moving lumps around him sound like his siblings and then with a surprised squeak, everything goes dark again but rather more furry as he ends up with Silver's tail covering over his head. He fights his way out from underneath and stares about, the smell of nearby food triggers the thought that he's hungry and he joins the scramble over mum's belly.
Liam's eyes are closed while he nurses, but five minutes later, after he's had his fill, he rolls away and looks up. The shady images are still there. He closes his eyelids and is surprised to find himself back in the dark. Open, close, open, close. He finds this quite amusing. He squirms onto his back and looks up, continuing to open and close his eyes and wiggle his stubby forelegs in amusement. With a small hiccup, he rolls back onto his belly and begins to crawl towards his mother's forelegs. He puts one forepaw against her leg in an attempt to pull himself up and over it, but falls over backwards instead.
Though he may the the oldest, Haben is also finding it difficult to reach his mother. He keeps slipping and falling on the forest of fur around him. But he's determined to get to his destination so he keeps getting right back up and trying again. Once he finally gets there and with the faint sounds of his sibilings feeding around him, Haben also realizes he's hungary as well. Once he finds a free spot, he settles down next to Lexus and starts to nurse. It's strange to him how the darkness suddenly comes back but, since he's hungry, he doesn't care.
( Sierra is content where she is, and settles in to nurse. The fright of the foggy light is forgotten, Mother is here, food is here, her brothers...well, she instinctively recognizes them as 'family', but they are nowhere near the all-encompassing wonder that is 'Mother' on the ladder of importance to the young female. Silver sighs contently as her pups all nestle in against her. She offers a few more swaths of the tongue before lowering her head beside them, curled warmly about her pups, back to the den wall, blocking out light and cold from the delicate little bodies. )
Lexus has discovered the blinking phoneme and assumes it must be the shapes disappearing again as they should. It confuses him a little when they keep coming back but the moment he bumps his nose into the right spot his mind focuses only on food. He's vaguely aware that Haben is next to him but it's not until he's had his fill and settled against mum that he pays any attention to his surroundings again and tries to use this new found thing called sight again.
Liam is gradually getting used to his newfound eyesight. He stares up at his mother as he lies on his back next to her giant forelegs. With his stomach full, he is suddenly struck by fatigue and is hard pressed to keep his eyes open, as remarkable is his ability to see. Still, with the other puppies finishing eating and beginning to move around, Liam is coaxed to stay awake a little longer and explore with his siblings.
After a good, long nursing, Haben pulls away from Silver's stomach only to be greeted with the light and images he thought disapeared. Hmm, that's strange. How did they come back? Haben tries to make them go away and, after a few failed attempts, he also discovers that blinking makes the dark come back for a moment. Hey this is pretty neat! After experimenting with his new ability for a few minutes, Haben begins to actually look at his surroundings for the first time. Everything is still pretty blury and unfocused but he can make out a few things based on their color. Like Lexus for example laying next to him. Perhaps it's just a brotherly connection but Haben gets up and starts to make his way over to Lexus, even though he doesn't really have a reason to.
The tiny female soon finds that her belly is full, and with it comes the groggy fatigue typically accompanied by a full belly. She disengages herself from the nipple, and when she looks away, she finds that strange light is back. It's not as scary this time for some reason, and she finds herself blinking at the tunnel entrance, then shakily turning her little head to peer at the blobs that are her brothers and the huge shape that is Mother. She grunts as she turns, nestling closer into mom's fur, where it's warm...so nice and warm...and that darkness quickly returns as fatigue wins out. Silver smiles, bathing Sierra a few times before turning her attention to those of her pups who are still conscious. She quirks a brow at the pup who has placed himself at her forelegs, and with a grin, she begins to groom him rather vigorously. Perfect target.
Lexus sniffs at each blob he can vaguely make out but doesn't move from his spot. He's against mum now, it's warm there. He sniffs out at the Haben blob when it seems to be coming closer, a small, slightly confused whine following which turns somewhere along the way into a yawn. Maybe brother knows what's up?
Liam's adventure is cut short by yet another bath. But Liam does not complain. He's already beginning to display his easygoingness of character by patiently enduring his mother's tongue-licks. By the time she is done, he is extra sleepy and dozes off.
Oh brother knows what's up alright; he's tired and so to, apparently, is Lexus. Well what's a brother for if you don't have anyone to sleep near? When Haben reaches his brother, he lays down in front of him and snugs up close to the warmth of Silver. Ahh, that's more like it. With the new feeling of warmth and a full stomach, Haben starts to slowly be taken over by fatigue. He lays his head down near his front paws and soon the darkness returns as he drifts off to sleep again. Let's just hope Lexus doesn't mess it up this time.
Lexus watches Haben lie down and fall asleep...well, he watches but he doesn't really knows what's going on still. A quick look at all the other blobs shows similar fates and he concedes. Shuffling up to Haben he rests his head on the other pup and starts to drift off. Cause what are brothers for if not to be nice warm pillows? Least Lexus will give off a little heat in return so it's not all bad.
Silver smiles down at her pups and lays her head upon her paws, golden eyes upon them as she, too, drifts off to sleep.
