Summary: While out trying to find Johari from within the wilds, hunger strikes causing Hali and Lyk to take on the largest prey they've ever encountered.
Scene
Well here they were, on their journey to find one dearest to them; or least Halidari that is. Leaving the undergrowth behind them, Hali comes across the well traveled path of what looked like dear tracks. It made her wonder if they were still somewhere close by; though something like that would lead them off the beaten path and away from Johari, not so say their going in the right direction to start. "You hungry?" Hali questions Lyk as she looks back to him.
Lykaios didn't miss the scent of deer, though it is an animal he has never hunted before. When Halidari asks if he is hungry, he answers, "A little." He wouldn't complain if they continued along their current course to find Johari, waiting until some prey appeared along that path, but it has been a couple days since he last ate. Johari is more important to Halidari than she is to him, though he likes the foxgirl too. If Hali appears in any sort of hurry, he's not going to do anything to slow them down, like hunting.
Halidari wasn't in to much of a hurry; besides without food where was the energy to keep looking. Also, the longer their out, the more time she gets to spend with Lyka, and thats always a good thing."Want to take a break and find something to eat?" That way if and when they fidn Johari, they'll be something to return to should it not be picked off by scavengers.
Lykaios gives a nod to halidari, nuzzling her slightly. "I'd like that." Besides all of that, there's a good chance that Johari may need some food when they actually find her, and if they have some food they can bring to her or bring her to, it may be better than making her wait while they go to find something.
Nuzzling him back, Hali smiles. "Alright." Which direction to go now.. putting her nose to the ground, picking up the scent of something edible shouldn't be that hard right. Trailing around, the sound of something to the right brushes through fallen tree limbs and foliage. Stoping abruptly, Hali looks up to look for it.
Lykaios follows after Halidari, walking slowly and silently through the plant growth. He doesn't know, yet, what they're hunting, but if they work together, they're more likely to be successful. It doesn't take him long to catch the target scent, and he crounches down, listening and looking through the immediate area for their prey.
What it was they were after was yet to be determined. It was either elk of deer, maybe even a cross between the two; nonetheless it would take them both to take it down seeing at its way larger than they are. Looking to Lyk for a moment as he comes up along side her, she nods before circling around to the left of where she thinks the target is.
Lykaios remains crouched low to the ground, though he no longer follows Hali. Rather, he attempts to circle the creature from the other side, still moving as quietly as he can, which forces him to be slow. This is an entirely new type of hunt from him, as he never got a chance to hunt within his pack, but he has an idea of how it might go down, with him and Halidari working together to prevent the prey from escaping or one of them from getting hurt.
It wasn't a matter of being able to keep it from escapeing or preventing one of them from getting hurt; she knew they'd be able to keep it there; it was if they could bring it down beofre something like that could happen. Looking around, Hali just barely manages to see it through a hole in the brush, crouching down, she slowly begins to creep forward with the hope of the forest making more sound than she is.
Lykaios can't see the creature they're hunting, but he does smell it and hear it chewing on some sort of plantlife. Like Hali, he begins creeping forward. To some dgree, the fact that he is accustomed to hunting smaller, faster creatures helps, as he is less likely to spring at the creature until he knows that it has sensed him. When that moment comes, and the creature freezes, trying to determine which way to run, he does the same for a split second, drawing back to spring at the animal as powerfully as he can.
Halidari didn't expect things to go as quickly as they did, but whatever works. Watching closely, she doesn't know that Lyk is lunging forward until she sees the animal try to dodge the attempt. However, as it does, Hali becomes the one who needs to watch out; just nearly getting trampled. Side stepping, she gets the perfect chance to try and do something. Much larger than she is, she does her best by running forward while pawing at the hind legs of the... deer. She hopes it trips.
Lykaios obviously didn't time it right, as he eitherly sprung too quickly or two slowly. He doesn't let it discourage him, though. He is used to being forced to chase prey, often ina futile manner. Rather beginning to give chase, and catching up quickly as Halidari tries to stop the creature from continuing to run.
Halidari was taken by surprise, but that doesn't seem to stop her from reacting accordingly. Looking over to Lyk when he reaches along side her, she manages to say, "Try to run ahead of it." to him as she too tires to keep her pace and do whatever she can to knock it off balance. She's got a plan, she just hopes it works.
Lykaios has to work hard to increase his pace further, but he does, draining some of the energy he has to try to placce himself in front of the deer. It takes him a few moments, but he manages to slowly gain on the creature and his girlfriend, going with his girlfriend's plan, though he doesn't know what it is.
Watching both of them, Hali is able to actually slow her own pace and give the deer room to curve. There was a log up ahead, least she hoped there was still a log there, and Hali wanted the deer to head towards it and if anything try and jump it. Keeping up, she looks ahead for the fallin tree, and it was there; counting the steps to when the deer would possibly leaps over, she prepares to swing out and mess up the attempt.
Lykaios can't pay much attention to Hali behind him. He keeps pace with the deer, though, and he spots the log ahead. Though keeping the current pace is strenuous, he refuses to slow down, running essentially neck and neck with the deer and keeping his eyes to the side and ahead of him, so he does not lose the creature or fall over something.
Its only moments later, that things seems to fall into place. Noticing the strained look in her boyfriend, she's got to make this quick; course he's going to have to keep it down till she joins him, if all goes planed. As the deer begins to opush itself from the ground, Hali reaches out with a paw, to dislodge one of its hind legs from the ground and send it plummeting to the ground. However, Hali doesn't get the chance... the deer freakishly doesn't make it completely over the log catching a leg on the log and goes face first into the ground. Hali is surprised by this and quickly makes the decision to stop.
Lykaios, on the other hand, can't stop. He jumped as the deer did, and he just barely notices the fact that the deer falls. He skids, turning as he does, and then leaps to snap at the deer who hit the ground. This is their best opportunity to take the creature down, and if they allow it to get it's feet back under it, there will be no way that he, at least, could continue to keep up with it.
Luckly for him, Hali had every intent on keeping the deer on the ground. Giving herself a moment to actually realize what just happened, happened, she returns to reality and makes for the fallin deer. Getting to it first, she jumps right up in the beasts hide; her weight might not be able to keep it down, but give it time and there'll be two to fend off. Moving up to the neck her first attempts as to sufficat the poor thing.
Lykaios moves around the deer, not intending to collide into Halidari. Growling, he leaps at the fallen deer, putting his weight on the much larger creature to try to prevent it from getting back to it's feet and sinking his teeth into the deer's skin to hold it still as Hali goes about attacking the neck, which will kill it much more cleanly than anything he could do.
Halidari wasn't to much in favor for having a mouth full of throut, but the cause will be well worth the effort. Diving in and holding for as long as it took, Hali jerked along with the deer each time it tried to escape, survive. After the long moment, however, the deer finally stops moving; Hali doesn't let go though until she is absolutely sure its out for the count. Afer a moment she does let go and can proudly say that thew two have accomplished their first real hunt together.
Lykaios is still breathing heavily even as the deer finally stops struggling. it dawns on him, however, that he and Hali seriously just managed to successfully hunt a deer, and as his breathing slowly returns to normal, he jumps off of their dead prey to nuzzle Hali, his tail wagging. This is, by far, the largest thing he has ever helped to catch, and it makes him profoundly happy.
Halidari had no words to say, she was tired and just glad they did something together without getting hurt. Letting out a slight smile, she does manage to nuzzle him back before looking to the deer; such a shame they were going to eat it.. of well they'll just have to spread the word by mouth.
Lykaios doesn't think so much abuot sharing the fact they made a kill with others, not right now. After nuzzling Halidari, though, he returns to the side of the deer to begin eating. The creature is huge, and no matter how hungry he ever could be, he would never be able to eat his 'fair share' of the creature. he does tuck into it, though, planning on filling his stomach.
Halidari didn't really care that anyone knew what they had accomplushed, it was more of a... look at what I did, like she were a child. Shruging it off, she turns to the deer as she too, begins to eat right next to Lyk. There was surely enough here to last them a few days is lucky.
Lykaios is not terribly polite about eating, but neither does he behave as though he hasn't had a meal in a while. It doesn't take him too long to get a full stomach, and the chunk he has taken out of the deer is far from enormous. When he finishes eating, he glances at Halidari, stretching as he does.
Eatting was a wonderous thing; it had been like forever since her last meal, however, it doesn't look like she's eatten much at all when you look at the gapping hole on the deer as a whole. Even with Lykaios' put together it just looks like some young cougar came along and had a snack. Nonetheless, it did fill Hali up but put her to full to acutally start the search for Johari back at the top of the list. She'll wait a while first.
