It took Skelaghe a good amount of time to find something to eat outside of Amaranth territory, and after she ate, she decided to remain where she was. Only recently has she returned. It is still early in the day, and Skelaghe has again found herself near the stone formations. This time, she is walking around them, admiring the landmark she has never seen before.
The cougaress had fled swiftly once she had been out of range of her fellow tribe-members and the she-wolf, Skelaghe. She never really did enjoy her afternoon walk. Not fully, anyway. And it was not until after nightfall that she had even considered returning to Amaranth. So it is that, with the next day's dawning, she comes back upon Amaranth territory, her tail curled behind her. Her face is devoid of emotions as she registers the scent of the she-wolf that visited last night and notes that it is still fresh. So, it is with no surprise that Ama finds herself within range of the wolf as the cougaress approaches the formation. "Good day," she greets the she-wolf with a small, weary smile.
Skelaghe could hear the sounds of someone approaching, but she didn't bother to respond much other than to slow her pace, so that no one would wind up chasing her around the stones, should they wish to talk. Skelaghe spots the cougaress shortly after Ama enters the clearing and offers her a smile it return, full and genuine. "Good day, Ama. It is a pleasure to see you again."
Ama dips her head. While her opinion of wolves is low, she's going to at least try to change her own opinion on this one -- she came to that conclusion during the night -- so rather than continue on her merry way, she finds herself padding towards the she-wolf. "And you too," I suppose. The cougaress finds her way in front of the she-wolf, then slowly settles onto her belly as if it's the first time she's actually been able to rest since the previous day. "How are you this morning?" Ama attempts to make some conversation.
Rarely has Skelaghe ever passed up the chance for a conversation with anyone. Even with something so spectacular as the stones currently at her back, she sits, facing the cougaress. "I am well, thank you. And how are you?" Skelaghe could guess any number of answers Ama might give to that, given how she moves, besides the standard, social pleasantries that Skelaghe's response would seem to embody. She waits for the answer and the chance to get standard conversational openers out of the way, though.
The cougaress' tail flickers in response, then she grins a toothy little grin. "I am... better than yesterday," she finally says, her cheeks burning a little as she recalls. "I was a little ashamed," she says softly, her eyes lowering as her expression grows more serious, "...after Chief Chesmu arrived. I didn't quite know what to do," she sighs softly and shakes her head.
Skelaghe drops her smile as Ama expresses such emotions as shame and embarrassment. She wouldn't want to portray the idea that she's laughing at the cougaress, or anything of the sort. Her tone even takes on a hint of sympathy. "Do not judge the chieftain too harshly for the way he spoke to you... And do not judge yourself too harshly, either. It was just a misunderstanding, and it did not end too poorly." From what she saw, the chief seems to lack trust in those who live here. It seems a recipe for trouble to Skelaghe, but it is not her place to comment on it so openly, so she sticks to simple attempts to console Ama.
Aye, Chesmu is still young. Perhaps part of the reason the embarrassment had been so strong was simply in the knowledge that Ama is older than the chief. Ama nods slowly, crossing one forepaw over the other. The she-wolf speaks wisdom, and Ama would not be one to dismiss such words just because Skelaghe is a wolf. "No, I suppose it didn't..." she says after a moment, her brows furrowing slightly. "I should thank you though, for sticking up for me. I didn't expect that from a wolf," she says with a smile. That quickly disappears, however, when she realize how that might've sounded... "I mean- not all wolves are bad. And I don't mean that just because you're a wolf." I think.
Here we go again. The Chieftain, like clockwork, is on his way around the borders again, marking and patrolling. Marking and patrolling. That's a great deal of what Chesmu is for in the tribe. "Owning" the territory, though not really the one in charge of the tribe in whole. No, the tribe is largely matriarchical, but with Ayashe's prolonged absences, Chesmu has had no choice but to step into leader role from time to time. "What Ama means to say is that many wolves would not exactly jump at the chance to befriend a cougar, let alone reassure one when said cougar is distraught."
This time, however, it is much more difficult for Skelaghe to keep from actually laughing. Indeed, her smile returns, and she seems clearly amused. She has met her fair share of animals who doubt her intentions because of her species, recently. She doesn't address Ama, though, as she hears a familiar male voice. Ah, the oh so helpful chieftain, back again. Amusement still in her tone, she says, "Believe it or not, Ama managed to make herself perfectly clear without your commentary." No, she's not upset with Chesmu, but Ama has been embarrassed enough, in Skelaghe's presence. There is no reason to compound that embarrassment.
Ah! Ama starts, her ears flattening as her head whips around to look at none other than Chesmu himself. Her mouth moves to form words, but nothing comes out. Rather, she looks at the she-wolf again then nods her head to confirm what the chieftain has said. "Yes, that's right," she murmurs, sitting upright and twisting to look at the chief again -- this time to incline her head respectfully. Then the older puma returns her gaze to Skelaghe and struggles not to quirk a brow in response to the she-wolf's words to Chesmu. Then back to the chief, "Good day, Chief Chesmu," she finally manages softly, with a very brief flash of a smile.
"Good day, Skelaghe, Sister Ama." Chesmu says, attaching the "sister" on to hopefully deliver a message to Ama: Friend first, Chieftain second. "A pleasure to see you, Skelaghe, as always."
"The pleasure is mine, Chesmu." Skelaghe gives a slight bow of her head as she says this, but she remains sitting where she is. "I hope the past day has treated you well." She doesn't imagine much of note has happened, since things seemed pretty calm by the time she left to hunt, but she still leaves the opening for Chesmu to take the conversation in whichever direction he wishes.
Sister. Heh. She resists the urge to look at her shoulder, still lacking in anything of a marking. She focuses on Skelaghe, who is speaking. She has little enough to say now. If there were things she might've said before, well... not they've all but fled from her mind.
"Aside from your arrival, it's been rather uneventful. Border patrols. Urinating on bushes is probably the most boring thing a cougar will ever do." Chesmu quips. "Though every now and then I'll bump into creatures like yourself, a change of pace, interesting conversation."
Skelaghe grins at the first bit of what Chesmu says, and it is that statement she addresses. "All for the greater good, though. How are your darling children, anyway?" Skelaghe still hasn't seen them, yet. She doesn't intend to leave until she has. They are a large part of the reason she visited, after all.
"Well, they are doing pretty well, they're still a bit shaken up since their friends left with Maulisho, but they'll be back." Chesmu says. "As a loving father, I'm already scheming on who I would like to see as who's mate when they become adults. I have three girls and a boy. Just as beautiful as the day they came into this world."
"If the other three are half as beautiful as Chandani, I imagine the whole bunch of them will turn plenty of heads when they are older." Skelaghe's tone is sincere. That said, though, she does enter the more serious part of the conversation. "I kept an eye out for your friend while I was hunting yesterday, but I did not see them. I hope all is well with them, too." Chesmu seemed rather concerned about their departure yesterday, but today he seems certain that they'll return, so maybe he found them. Skelaghe isn't certain.
Ama is listening silent to the conversation. She's not quite ready to move higher up the mountain, so she's really got nothing better to do now. Unless they decide to shoo her away. And besides that, a name has popped up that she suddenly recognizes: Maulisho. Maulisho... /that/ was the name she couldn't remember! The young cougaress she'd met nearly a year ago. So, Maulisho decided to join Amaranth, then. ...but left? Ama's brows furrow as she looks back and forth between traveler and chief.
Chesmu thinks about this a moment. "She might have covered a greater distance than I hoped." he says, betraying no sadness that anyone who knows about Chesmu's worries knows is there. If he weren't Chieftain, he'd be searching for her, day and night. "Maulisho and I..." Chesmu says. "We go way back. Long before I even heard of Amaranth we've been good friends.”
Skelaghe doesn't speak up immediately. The only thing she can think of to ask is why Chesmu's friend left, and, again, it isn't her place. After a moment, what she finally does say is, "Friendship like that isn't broken easily. I'm sure everything will work out."
Ama wonders if she should speak up. She knew little of Maulisho, only they her own encounter with the cougaress was brief, though -- now that she thinks back on it -- good. It was shortly before Ama left Amaranth. She nods as Skelaghe speaks, but offers nothing in way of her own words. Why did Maulisho leave? And did Ama understand correctly that Maulisho had /cubs/? Indeed, it must've been something big to prompt the cougaress to leave home with the cubs in tow.
"Ever fall in love?" Chesmu asks. It's a question that some may think of as perfectly innocent. It may be absolutely damning or embellishing in Chesmu's case, however.
Skelaghe shakes her head. No, Skelaghe has never been in love. She's not sure where this is going, either, given her general lack of knowledge about the actual structure of the tribe. As such, she, too, remains quiet, allowing Chesmu to continue if he wants.
Ever fall in love? The chief poses a simple question. And yet, something in Ama's mind makes her wonder if she shouldn't leave. Member of the tribe or no, she suspects it's none of her business and the only reason she's still here is she's tired and doesn't really want to go anywhere else. And yet, she shakes her head slowly in response to his question, a curiosity in her gray-green eyes.
Chesmu expected at least one of them to have fallen in love before, but he'll just deal. "I have, and I found out I was in love long too late." Chesmu says, "I would have sacrificed anything, my position as Chieftain and all the females I can mate with just to have had Maulisho at my side. I can't have that, though. She has a mate, she has cubs. It is a harsh reality, being in love with the one who would have been perfect for you, only to not have her because she already had her own perfect companion at her side." Chesmu sighs wistfully.
"It sounds to me like she may not have been so perfect for you, after all." Skelaghe may not have any experience in love herself, but she has watched people both brought together and torn apart by love. "You can't expect that you would enjoy spending time with someone who is unhappy with you, Chesmu." And yet, someone must have pushed the subject, leading to uncomfortable feelings, at the very least. Otherwise Chesmu wouldn't be talking about his friend leaving and love in the same subject.
The cougaress squints, as though the sun were in her eyes. But it isn't. She pities Chesmu, and while she doesn't understand personally, it does remind her of her sister, who left Ama's side to join a male. Before she can stop herself Ama utters the soft words, "I'm sorry," then lowers her gaze. She is sorry for that. Would it be too much if she were to say, "It is better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all?" Probably. So she doesn't say that. Something obviously must've gone wrong...
"That is the end of my story." Chesmu says. He won't reveal so readily his sin, the crime he committed against Maulisho, though there are those that do know. "I can pray for forgiveness, but in the end, it all hinges on Maulisho's decisions. She has already made one."
"Just remember that forgiveness is very seldom unconditional. Give her the space she desires, even once she is ready to begin forgiving, and you'll both be much happier." If that weren't true, Chesmu wouldn't be so concerned over the fact that she left. Truthfully, though, Skelaghe is just revealing her intentions without saying them out loud. If Chesmu tried to convince Maulisho that he was the one she should be with and she left because of it, Skelaghe will certainly not be the one trying to find her.
Ama regards her chief quietly. An ear tilts towards Skelaghe. The she-wolf is right, of course. The cougaress even gently dips her head to indicate as much before standing slowly. This has given her a little something more to think about. She would see what this comes to in the end: whether Maulisho will choose to come home or not. Ama moves to her paws slowly, preparing to move on soon, unless she's needed here. Which she doubts she is.
"I will." Chesmu says. He's confident Maulisho is forgiving... but he did a horrible thing to her. Insisting Maulisho be his mate was merely the start of the problems. Space, though. That's a good point. Not recklessly attempting to find her. "Thank you."
Skelaghe glances to Ama as the female cougar stands. Her smile returning, she says, "Have a good day, Ama." The female cougar intends to leave and unless Chesmu desires to continue talking, Skelaghe will, once again, probably not be far behind. Much of the day still remains, and she should not spend all of it just lying here.
The cougaress pauses, hesitates, as though she intends to say something meaningful to the chieftain. But, she never opens her mouth to speak, only look at him thoughtfully before looking towards the she-wolf. "Thank you, Skelaghe. Stay safe," she responds quietly before beginning to move forward slowly, as if she's not entirely sure anymore whether she wants to stay or go. Her uncertainty will only get her into more trouble one day, though.
Chesmu doesn't stop either of them. He has duties to see after. Urinating on bushes, as he had said before. "I shall continue patrols now." With that, the Chieftain is on his way.
"Fare well," she calls after Chesmu. She nearly forgot to! Then she glances at Skelaghe one last time. Nah. Not all wolves were bad. Ama knew better than to judge them so harshly, though... it didn't usually stop her. With a flick of her tail, the puma turns away, then finally darts towards home.
As both Ama and Chesmu leave, Skelaghe again stands. She could spend more time here, but she is sure there are many more parts of the cougar territory that are worth seeing, places that she either hasn't seen or that she doesn't remember. As such, she heads vaguely southward at a leisurely pace.
