Players: Alsoomse (Female Dog), River (Male Dog Pup)
Setting: Cherry Orchard
The den is dark. Quiet. Safe. Though his siblings have been brave and ventured out into the bright outside world ... River has been very happy to stay in the dark shadows where it's safe. Safe and quiet. But even the most timid and sickly of pups can feel the gnaw of curiosity. Luckily, he seems to be doing much better than he had before, and has been feeding when he's had the chance. And now, for the first time, his ultra pale eyes take a glimpse at the outside world. First, his black nose pokes out, then, after a long ... long moment of hesitation, he creeps out slooowly further with his eyes squinted and his ears perked up.
The rather protective mother dog hasn't gone all that far from the den, but she had to go get a few things done while the three was sleeping. Now Alsoomse is making her way back to the den after getting a drink along with finding a bit of food, which looks like a small deer fawn, or what's left of it. She is making her way closer to the den, what’s left of the kill getting settled down some distance from it before she goes closer. Though she pauses as she catches sight of the small nose and then head that peers out from the den.
Sniff sniff. River wrinkles his nose and promptly disappears back inside of the den. Something /smells/ out there! Actually, a lot of things smell out there. Scent overload! The urge to crawl way back in the back of the den where the scent of his mother, brother, and sister are dominant is a large one. But ... he /thought/ he saw something out there. So, timidly, he peeeeeks back out again, squinty eyed again. Here are large things out there. Tall things! Trees. Flying things! Birds. And ... momma things! He instantly brightens upon spotting his mother and yips out. "Momma. Momma! Momma?"
Alsoomse watches quietly, pondering what the little boy might do as he wiggles about there. A chuckle escapes her as she is spotted and she trods over to the den and lowers her head to snuffles softly at him. "Hello River.. You want to come outside?" It makes her feel good to see the boy up and about, she is still worried about him though.
His curvy tail waggles from side to side as Alsoomse comes closer, but he waits til she come to him, not daring to step fully out of the den just yet. As her head comes down to his level, he happily lick her nose with his tongue and then wraps his paws around her muzzle. "Momma," he says again happily, still wiggling his tail and body. But her request has him blinking, and his eyes widen a little. "Ow...side?" Why would he want to go out to /that/ scary place? He peers around her, then sits back on his haunches. "No owside."
Alsoomse is rather happy at the moment, a soft burr like sound escaping her as she lays down letting the boy hug onto her maw as long as he might wish. Its funny how she can just melt down into a puddle of lovingness when around her children. "Well.. Why not?" She questions while her nose wiggles at him. "Its not that scary, an I'm here."
Hmmmm. Good question. Why not? Rivers brows furrow in a childish look of deep thought, and then, seemingly making up his mind, he glances around her again. "Cuz. ... /is/ scary," he insists as he tips his head up to look his mother in the eyes. "S'meeean.." He glares out towards the trees, as if they have personally done him some horrible wrong. He snorts out, then takes a bouncing backwards step deeper into the den, and a grin suddenly appears on his face. "C'mon momma! Good here. Play!"
Alsoomse chuckles a tad as she watches the boy. "Dear if you want to play then you must come outside." He won't be able to stay in the den for the rest of his life after all..
River would stay in the den for the rest of his life if he could! Why would he want to go anywhere else? He bows his front half down in a sign of play, but then tumbles over. Snortling, he sits up and briskly shakes his head. Durr, what happened? His plan isn't working! His mother isn't following him, which means he's going to have to go to her. He thinks on it for a long while, his face scrunching. And then, with an elaborate puppy sigh, he begins to creep forward. To be safe, he keeps close to his belly and inches his way very. very. very slowly to the den's entrance. He stops just when the very tip of his nose is outside of the den. "Here?" Though it sounds a lot like "Heyah?"
Alsoomse looks amused as she watches River, she is doing her best not to laugh. "Humm, no no.. All the way out here to where I'm deary." This is said with a happy tone to try and show that really, being outside is good!
But it's so...faaaar! Look how far away his mother is! To River, it seems as if she's a mile away, even though in actuality she's only a handful of feet from the den's entrance. He looks left. Trees and grass. He looks right. More trees and grass. He looks up. Sky. Doesn't seem too dangerous. He hunches his back, tucks his tail, and crawls out of the den. He's careful to keep looking around though, and it's a good thing that he does! Something is /following/ him! "Ah!" He jumps up, ears alert as he looks behind him at a black...spot on the ground. When he moves, it moves. He tries to skitter away from it, but it follows right behind him. "Momma!!" Help! He makes his way to her as fast as he can, and the scary black ... shadow behind him, follows.
Alsoomse lowers her head while her tail sways around at her side as she watches the boy. "Come on River.. Its alright I promise nothing is going to hurt you." An if something was stupid enough to try mom is right here to rip it into pieces of course! She blinks and chuckles as he runs over to her a forepaw lifting to curl around the boy while a soft murr escapes her. "Deary, that is just your shaows. It won't hurt you."
Cling! River presses himself tightly against his mother's warm and safe body, cuddling into her fur as her paw curls around him. His eyes squeeze shut and he waits. Waits for the black thing to devour him. To tear him into pieces. To take his soul! But ... none of that happens, and instead he slowly opens his eyes as his mother's encouraging words penetrate through his fear. "Sh-..sh-shadow?" Now there's a hard word. "N...no hurt?" He looks up at her. "Pwomise?" He eyes the ground and gives a gurgling puppyish growl. Take that, shadow!
Alsoomse lowers his head and softly nuzzles at the boys head, a faint murr like sound escaping her once more. "I promise.. See, no hurt." She points out before lifting her own forepaw and it casts a shadow across the ground. "See, I have a shadow as well."
River slowly begins to realize that he's not getting injured, and he watches on as Alsoomse goes on the demonstrate that ... shadows aren't out to get him. "Shad-dow..." He tries out the word again, finding an ounce more bravery. But he still keeps himself very near to her, because you know...you never can tell about those shifty shadows. It /could/ try to jump out at him when he's not looking! "Momma shadow." He pricks his ears, watching the shadow that's cast by her paw. He tips his head .. then pounces on it, snapping at the ground. Rawr!
Alsoomse smiles at the boy and nods. "Yes that's right.. Its a shadow." She chuckles while watching the boy and leans down to lick across his back. "Oh.. So brave." This said while her tail thumps against the ground, she is thrilled he is up an around and acting like his siblings.
Mwuaha! Stupid shadow. With his mother's approval, River seems to swell with pride and he looks up at her with his tongue lolling out happily. But his moment of triumph is short lived, and he soon looks around him again, just now noticing how ... wide and open everything is. And those harmless shadows? They don't look so harmless when they're not dog shaped... "Momma, I go back now," he says s he begins to scuttle back to the den. He came out .. she didn't say anything about not being able to go back in!
Alsoomse blinks and chuckles while lowering her head to peer at him curiously. "Your going to leave momma up here on her own then?" She questions curiously, a soft sigh escaping her at this. "I'm going to be all lonely now.."
River freezes and looks over at his poor lonely mother. How could he leave her up here all by her lonesome with those shadow things all around? He glances from her, to the safe haven of a den, then back at her. "...Momma come?" he suggests in a stroke of brilliance. "Momma come," he says again, crawling forward another inch.
Alsoomse pouts slightly at this. "But I'm already here." She states softly. Mostly she wants River to stay out of the den so he will get use to the outside world, like his dear siblings are already. Her tail flicks a few times. "Come here.. I'll protect you, promise."
Stuck inbetween two places that he'd like to be, between his mother and the den, River can only stand there, looking lost. What should he do? Disobey and run into the safety of the den? Or be obedient and return to his mother and brave the big scary world. He whines lightly. "Momma...no come?" He gazes longingly at the den ... then makes a beeline for his mom! He dives between her legs and presses himself close. Yes, he'll stay outside ... but he's not going an inch away from good ol' safe mom.
Alsoomse shakes her head slightly to his question. "No.. I not come." Is said softly. She blinks and chuckles while curling her foreleg around him and cuddles him close to her chest. A happy burr escapes her. "See.. Its alright here with me."
Yes, nice and safe right there, and River is not going to budge. Where Alsoomse goes, he'll be right there, like her new little shadow. Right now, as darkness falls and those shadows begin to turn into deep blotches of blackness, things are looking a lot less friendly, and so he curls up and closes his eyes. Being brave is tiring.
Alsoomse murmurs softly to the boy knowing its a big deal for him to be out here in the darkness with her. "It'll be alright." She softly says now and then trying to relax the boy so when he falls asleep he'll actually rest.
