Starlight rears up as she finishes her gallop, and she stands, breathing heavily as she recovers, shaking out her mane. She perks her ears and looks around. She thought she'd heard something. She doesn't see anything, but stays on the alert as she rests.
Cheveyo finally stops and peeks carefully. And his heart sinks. He may be hungry, but that's not a horse he thinks he can actually take down by himself. But he must try. HE's starving. He takes a step back an turns and moves at what might be a better place. Unfortunately for him, his paw lands on and snaps a twig loudly. He winces, knowing this could end the hunt.
Starlight's ears pivot to the sound and she freezes, snorting as she stands her ground. If she runs, whatever it is will almost definitely give chase, and she'd like to rest more before running again. No, she won't flee, but she could use a good fight, and thus she watches for movement from the source of the sound.
Cheveyo takes another few steps, much more carefully this time. Finally, he throws caution to the wind and bursts out to attack the horse.
Starlight tosses her head and neighs before doing something that no sane horse would. She rears and starts to stampede towards the cougar, hoping to intimidate him, with well over eight-hundred pounds of horseflesh galloping straight towards the predator, and looking mad.
Cheveyo skids to a halt, trying to fight for traction, Cheveyo turns and takes off running. Stupid idiot! He should have known he'd have no chance at all of taking a horse down alone! This just gets added to Cheveyo's long list of experiences he'll make those who killed his father pay for. Yes...
Starlight rears up and kicks at the cougar, grinning at her success. She might have to try that again, though she can tell it's an inexperienced hunter. She neighs at the cougar, challenging him to try again.
Cheveyo goes back into hiding as fast as he can, cursing himself with every breath. What would mom do? Cheveyo shakes his head and bares his teeth. Stop it, mom's not here. It's just you.
Starlight, smug as she is, rears up again in a sort of victory dance, showing off just how awesome she thinks she is, and she goes prancing across the grasslands, tossing her mane and head and whinnying.
Cheveyo steps out as the horse prances off, still watching her. He looks angry, but he knows that in the end he lost this one and there's no way he can recover from his mistakes. Already his mind is working on ways to twist this and blame it on his enemies.
Starlight spots the cougar emerge from the corner of her eye and she grins over to him. "You should go back to hunting rabbits, kitty, until you get good enough for a horse." she taunts him.
Cheveyo huffs angrily, his eyes betraying all fury he has. This horse wounds him, and not in a physical way. He opens his mouth to speak, but decides against it. He is above answering mockery.
Starlight hmms, as if thinking. "You know, I thought I saw some carrion back in the woods. If you try hard enough, you might be able to catch that deer." she jokes .
Cheveyo bares his teeth angrily. It should be obvious that this cougar has a special sort of fury about him one would be careful of. He still says nothing to the horse mocking him. All he does is fantasize about this horse meeting a very violent and painful end by his paw.
Starlight sees the look to him and she stops taunting, though she does look somewhat amused. "Just as a hint from prey to predator, you should stay lighter on your paws. Otherwise, you sound like a badger lumbering, even if you're trying to sneak."
Cheveyo hmphs quietly to himself and looks at the horse. He keeps his glare on her, but he ultimately does finally speak. "Your... 'advice...' is noted! Now kindly die off so I can eat you!"
Starlight snorts. "I won't die off without a fight." she says, and then chuckles. "My ego wouldn't allow that, and I have a family to think of. If you're hungry for horse, you'll have to fight me."
Cheveyo scoffs angrily. Again, he doesn't give the one who mocks him any response. He starts to stalk off, enraged. Whatever he does catch will not have a quick or merciful end. And certainly not painless!
Starlight grins and she trots off after the cat. "Where're you going?" she teases lightly. "I'm the food, right here. You're going the wrong way."
Cheveyo loses his temper and sharply turns and advances on the horse, his eyes aflame, and yet, at the same time, frighteningly cold. "I do not have time for idiocy or mockery, horse!" He bared his teeth very angrily. "Keep your smart mouth shut and get out of my way!"
Starlight tosses her mane and chuckles softly. "Alright, alright. Don't get your tail in a knot." she says, and starts to walk away.
Cheveyo is seething, his breathing is heavy. But he has demonstrated, again, what kind of cougar he is. "Watch your back." Cheveyo turns and walks back where he came from. He'll get justice for his father. Some day.
