Characters:
Chayton - Male Falcon
Cheveyo - Male Cougar
Setting:
Lush Grasslands
----------------------------------------
Chayton flies from the south, deciding its high time he visited that one cougar again. He probably should have come sooner, but he's been... distracted. There's nothing like a pretty girl to keep a young mind occupied. But now that the pretty girl hates him and he can't figure out what to do about it, he has time to catch up on everything else he should have been doing. His keen eyes start to scan the landscape as he draws near to where the cougar was before.
Cheveyo is snoozing up in his beloved tree. He has taken to liking these naps where he doesn't need to do anything. Sadly Hahnee seems to have been scarce lately. He hopes this cougaress... sara... didn't get to him. He yawns and idly licks his paw.
Chayton smiles to himself when he sees the cougar in the same place he last saw him. Well, that's convieniant! Saves him the trouble of having to track him down. The falcon glides easily to land on to one of the higher branches of the tree, not bothering to offer a greeting. No doubt the cougar will notice his arrival anyway, and he suspects that he'll be getting some sort of comment on how long its been anyway.
"I hope that you've got lots to tell me, you've been gone for so long." Cheveyo says calmly, not even looking up at Chayton. He hopes there is some juicy information.
Chayton isn't really sure whether or not he has 'lots' of information. He's found out a great deal, but he's not sure how much of it would be considered valuable to this cougar. "It's been harder than I thought." he says, mostly neutral but with a touch of defensiveness, "A falcon can't take too much interest in the lives of cougars without them naturally wanting to know why. But I do know that something has happened in Amaranth, what details of it that the rank and file know, and I've made some aquaintances that may prove beneficial in the future."
This does catch the cougar's interest and he looks up now at the Falcon. "Not bad for a start." Cheveyo says. He curls a paw under his body and says. "Very well then, tell me what you have learned."
Chayton hesitates for a moment, wondering if he should ask the cougar about when he's going to get 'paid' for this information first. However, he well remembers how very interested the cougar was in learning more, and he's sure he'll be compensated sometime just to retain his services. "Something happened to Kein and Nayeli. They were seen travelling through Amaranth with a dead canine - a dog or a wolf - and looking very 'distressed'. Afterwards, Kein became excessively defensive of his family, to the point where his daughter was frightened. And at some point he severely frightened one of the younger cougars... I've seen this cub frequently, always blaming himself for everything; scared of me, even; utterly harmless. Since then things have cooled off a bit, but there's still a lot of tension among many of the cougars."
Cheveyo raises an eyebrow and smiles. This is good information. "So... seems that they are still true to form even after almost completely exiling my family." Cheveyo jumps down from the tree and drags a deer carcass out from hiding. "Tell me, were they close to coming to blows, do you think?" Cheveyo says.
Chayton smiles when he sees the deer, though he privately hopes that it's not too old. He's unable to hunt much of anything he can't eat in one sitting, so he's used to very fresh prey. That's what separates him from the scavengers. Still, he came hungry because he knew he was likely to get something. "There isn't and wasn't quite that level of tension, at least among those I've observed," he answers. And then, because the reward for doing so is now before him he adds, "What I've already said is the facts I was able to find. What I suspect is that the event that triggered all of this involved Nayeli getting hurt, both because of Kein's overreaction and because I heard much of what he was doing and nothing of her. Also that dead canine was probably a friend - I don't imagine they'd be carrying it around otherwise."
Cheveyo hmmmms. "Have some meat, eat your fill." Cheveyo says, his gears turning. Some pieces of the puzzle are beginning to click. He encountered a cougar who practically bragged about having Nayeli in his jaws. Most interesting. Most interesting indeed. "Most... fascinating... a third party on the scene... a kill... an almost kill... distress at the tribe..." Cheveyo starts to laugh. "They can't even handle the slightest of disasters it seems. Bird, I think it is time we start moving a little more forward... time to put them in a comfortable place... make them..." Cheveyo's eyes flash with a fiery brilliance. "...complacent. I want them to feel safe and secure. You keep spying for me, bird. And I'll employ another to send them a small message." Cheveyo's day has just improved.
Chayton looks greedily at the meat, and promptly flies down to land beside it. It doesn't take much to fill up a bird of prey as small as he is; both because of his absolute size and because instinct won't allow him to eat so much that it would hamper his flying. He listens to the cougar think out loud without comment, though he nods at the end. "Yes, it's best if nobody ever attaches me to you, even to deliver a message," he pauses, thinking a moment before adding, "And you have not given me your name, nor have I given you mine. Perhaps that's a good thing. You might also want to neglect to mention my species, should you mention me to anyone; there aren't many of my kind around." He continues to eat quickly, knowing that the cougar will probably not want him lingering around for too long.
Cheveyo nods. "Very well." Cheveyo says. "You shall not know my name nor I yours. And if anyone asks where I learn my information, I just tell them I have a source." The cougar smiles and decides he'll want to prepare his message carefully, just to let them know they have a "friend" out here thinking about them.
Chayton simply smiles and nods between bites. Part of the reason he doesn't want the cougar telling even those on his side about him is so that, if things go terribly wrong, he can claim innocence and get off scot free. Or even abandon the whole scheme if it becomes inconvienant. But for him to be able to do that he needs to be as loosely connected as possible. So he'll help the cougar's cause but not get let himself get too involved in it. After not too long, he straightens, feeling his belly full to capacity; it's much quicker to eat when the edible parts come in such big portions. "I'll report back sooner next time." he promises, lifting his wings but lingering a moment in case the cougar has anything else to add before he goes.
"It might get you more meat if you find more about this attack, and if things are still going wrong. Also see if there's been anything violent happening since this attack." Cheveyo says. "I want to be able to take advantage of any given situation they're in if I am forced to move early."
Chayton nods, storing that away for later. Part of the reason he'd been gone for so long was because he was looking for more information on who was responsible. He knew /that/ was incredibly meat-worthy information, but too few seem to know anything about it. Pity that his sense of smell was too poor to find anything out more directly. He jumps into the air, flapping hard until he's high enough to clear the tops of the trees and heading back south.
