Setting - Maple Glade
Characters Involved - Aspen (female whitetail deer), Ridge (male whitetail deer fawn), Dawn (NPC female whitetail deer fawn)
The time to move is upon the deer whitetail family. Aspen had delivered her fawns outside of Roscoe's territory, and now the two are old enough for travel. At least...she thinks so. It's time to unite them with the herd and the safe places within their lands. The grove of pines isn't /too/ far away from where the heart of the Umber herd's lands are, but...it is still a bit of traveling for a mother and two young fawns. And thus, the process has been slow. Aspen stops often, listening and watching, smelling and looking before continuing on. She keeps a close eye on both of her offspring all the while, though her tenseness gets notably less the further they get into the herd's lands. And soon, as they arrive to the maple glade, she seems almost relaxed. The sun hangs low in the sky, marking late afternoon with shadows that are both long and thin. One very long look around is taken before she finally smiles. "Home."
Ridge is not, by any means, a talkative boy. He is very much a listener, though. He could happily spend hours listening to those around him talk, and once things have settled down, he will repeat a few words, just to prove that he, like Dawn, is learning. Is being a good fawn. He follows faithfully behind his mother, and when she speaks, he makes a point of looking around. Home.
Home! That sounds like a fun word. Dawn, like her brother, did well with traveling and now that they've finally arrived she's ready to get rid of some pent up energy. But she's hesitant, this being a new place and all, and stays close to both mother and brother. Smirking, Aspen glances to both fawns then suddenly prances ahead, tail wiggling behind her as she trots into the open, glancing behind her with an encouraging look. "Come Ridge, Dawn. This is your home. Home is good. Home is safe."
Home. Ridge continues following his mother. Home. It's not an unfamiliar word. Home. He seems to recall it being used in both questions and statements. When are you going home? We'll be going home in a few days. He has heard it used often. So. This is home. As they walk along, he tilts his head to the side upon seeing a few new things. Then, after a short while of walking, he proclaims, simply, "Good." This will do.
"Good!" Dawn mimics her brother, beaming at him. Oh yes, this will do just nicely. Plenty of room to run and play and nag her sibling. The petite fawn, who hardly allows shyness to linger very long, trots out into the open as well, looking at all the new sights above and around her. "Ooooo..." she coos as she dances back towards Ridge, nipping at him playfully. Aspen watches, again being very careful to keep an eye out on things as the fawns acclimate themselves to their new home.
Ridge does nothing more than stand and watch as his sister trots back and forth. As soon as Dawn turns her mind to playing, though, Ridge greets her with an open-mouthed smile and hops playfully before leaping away to initiate a game of chase. As his legs get more and more steady with each passing day, games that require a lot of movement are his favorite.
Dawn rears back and kicks her front legs in playful taunting of her brother, beaming at him as he starts for her. Laughing, she turns and prances away from him in the familiar game of chase. She half turns, half trips behind the trunk of a tree and ducks her head and closes her eyes. You know what they say. If you can't see them, they can't see you! There's no /way/ he's going to find her, nope!
Ridge with no more regard of his mother, thinking only of the game before them, Ridge gives his sister a very brief head start, then takes off after her. He keeps his smile as he does so. Dawn's hiding place, while pretty pathetic by adult standards, is more effective than one might think, if only because Ridge is running so fast and fawns are built to blend into the trees. After a little while of running, though, he grows suspicious that he may have passed her, and so he turns back around.
Aspen never realized how entertaining fawns could be! She stifles a giggle as Ridge is stumped and Dawn continues to keep her eyes squeezed shut. After giving the glade one more once over, she moves towards her son with ears perked and eyes searching. "Where'd she go?" she asks with wide eyes. "Where's Dawn, huh?" Grinning, she leans down to nudge at the speckled male fawn before nodding in the direction in which his sister is pretending to be invisible. "...I /think/ I saw her go that way.."
Ridge stops walking as he listens to the advice of his mother. After listening, he turns to head in the direction his mother indicated. This time, he moves much more slowly, and even so, he sees Dawn long before he /realizes/ that he sees Dawn. Once he picks out the differences between her fur that the surrounding bark of the trees, though, he calls out, "Ha!" Found you! Were he more prone to talking, he might praise how well she hid, or else his own ability in finding her. He doesn't say anything else, though.
Ooh, mother is a tattle tale! Though Dawn doesn't realize this and keeps her muzzle tucked to the ground and eyes shut until...Ha! Her brother's call has her jumping, startled, and she lands on rigid legs with a broad smile. "Good!" she praises, laughing before she bounds around the other fawn. Aspen chuckles at the both of them, head shaking. "You silly fawns. Roscoe will be so thrilled to see you both here," she chuckles, sounding amused. 'Thrilled' might not be the best word.
