Dandelion has long smelled the vast grasses of the Endless Prairie, and at finally surmounting a rise from the Scrublands to the South, she cannot wait to finally feast on something other than tasteless desert-ish weeds. Plus, it just feels good to gallop at full speed! The Palomino mustang mare's hooves carry her steady and true. She's not been in a herd for some time, and as such she's a tad on the underweight side, having to frequently interrupt her grazings when trouble comes hunting for the lone mare ... but it also means she gets plenty of exercise, and her legs are both lean and well-muscled. The dusty edge of the Scrubland ground erupts into a large cloud of dust behind her, her tail and mane streaming hard behind her from her speed.
Starlight has wandered back to the area of her old herdlands, though she has shifted to the next terrain. She stands still in the grass, eyes closed as she lets the wind whip through her mane. The mare, once a proud leader of the Sagebrush herd, has fallen into a lonely existence, even a depression after the loss of her foals. She doesn't yet notice the other mare.
Though new to the area, Lootah tromps through the grasses much in the manner as if he owns the place. His head is held high, his golden and white mane flicking in the wind and his tail mimicking. Ivory hooves carry him swiftly through the prairie, the winds carrying with them the scent of others of his kind. Though unlike the others, he hasn't been far from the equine type for very long. Deep set eyes find their way to the two mares far in the distance, and a smirk appears. What luck! Not only has he come across wonderful grazing lands, but also upon two females as well. The stallion throws his head up in confidence, and soon his leisurely stroll turns into a full on gallop, with still quite a ways to go to reach the both of them.
Dandelion is far from stealthy. If the smoke-signal-like rise of dust behind her does not draw attention, only the deaf could miss the far-reaching rumble of her galloping hooves as she enters the Prairie. She tosses in a whinney or two as a call to see if other horse-kin are about. After awhile, galloping in, her ears pick up the rumbling of another horse's hooves -- even above her own rumbling hooves -- and she heads in the direction her ears report hearing another horse's gallop.
Starlight's eyes open at the whinny. She must be seeing things...another horse? Starlight acts on the way of caution, and she whinnies a reply, but remains fairly quiet. It's when she sees a second approach--a stallion? That her expression changes. Her ears go back and she snorts, stomping a forehoof. After being alone a while, she's not certain if she's ready for company...and certainly not for stallions. She has now had three mates, and lost all of them, to one reason or another. She doesn't need to go through that again.
Lootah reacts in much the same way as the mare that he hasn't yet become aquainted with. Eyes open wide, and his ears flick forward. With his own hooves hitting the ground harshly, the male nears the other two with each heavy hoof-fall, but sooner or later he slows his pace and makes his way into their area with a proud trot. His hooves are brought up high, his head still carried tall. With his grin still splashed over his flesh toned muzzle, Lootah isn't about to be the first to speak. Instead, he looks upon the still mare, and glances in the direction of the one who had come his way. Really, his luck was amazing. At times, at least.
Dandelion ends her gallop with a gradual slowdown, overshooting the stallion and other mare, then looping back in a trot, canter, and finally a walk. She snorts heavily from her hearty run. "Greetings!" she whinnies, excited by finally meeting other horses, and still a bit charged from her gallop.
Starlight remains rooted to her spot, though she seems no less happy. She is no longer lead of a herd, but still considers herself guardian of the lands. "It's been a long time since I saw another horse in these lands...Strange that there should suddenly be two others." she says, looking at both.
Dandelion nickers, "I have not seen another horse in a long time, either ... but neither have I been in these lands before today. My name is Dandelion. A pleasure to meet you both."
"There was a herd here..." she says. "I was lead mare, but the horses disappeared." she says. "Even my mate and foals." and she sighs. "Forgive me..." but she watches Lootah cautiously. "My name is Starlight." she introduces herself, long tail flicking about her heels.
Looking back toward the mares, his expression remains kind and calm, even as he sees the one named Starlight eyeing him the way that she is. Distrust among mares aimed toward stallions is something that he is more than familiar with, and thus he doesn't take it personally. Had she not revealed the bit of information about her mate and foals, he would've rolled his eyes and chided her a bit about any trust issues.. but not after that. It'd be too insensitive, too soon. Instead, he opts for a gentler way. "I'm very sorry for your losses, Starlight.." ...And? And nothing, apparently. Pursing his lips together in thought, he just.. stops talking, not yet giving his name.
Dandelion reaches her muzzle out to Starlight first for a breath-exchange. She flicks her tail anxiously, a bit charged up from finally meeting other horses for the first time in a long time.
Starlight whuffs softly at Dandelion in greeting. "Well...I no longer have control of the lands, so of course you may eat and sleep." she says. "But I would keep an eye out for cougars and wolves. They can be quite numerous." she tells them. "The lands aren't safe...but they're home until I return to the grass."
Lootah continues to watch the two mares, still pacing around them rather anxiously. The painted colored stallion flicks his tail a bit more, and shakes his mane free of any debris from his run down here. Afterward, he comes closer to the two of them, and speaks his piece. "If the lands aren't safe.. then we should remain together." All the sudden, his voice takes on a stern sort of tone, as if he claimed himself protector of the both of them already, without even properly introducing himself. Taking in a breath of air to appear larger than he already was, he lifts his head and follows up his proposition. "I suggest.. that we go to these grasses.. the three of us, together."
Starlight snorts very softly. "Well, if you're alert, you won't get eaten." she says, and she seems to glare at the stallion. She doesn't trust most, and is even more afraid to get to close to any of them, as that never ends well. "Besides, I can graze here."
Pulling his head back in a bit of a reaction towards Starlight's words, he raises a brow, and blinks. Was that a glare? What had he ever done to her? Glaring back, his ears stand erect, and he makes an attempt to stare her down. "No one said you couldn't graze here.. it was merely a suggestion." Looking toward the direction he assumed the grasses she was talking about would be in, the bi-colored stallion turns his head and breathes a sigh. "..What happened? To the rest of them, I mean?"
Starlight stares right back at him. "I only wish I knew...my foals died, though." she says. "As for the rest...maybe the sickness that claimed Mint and Cedar...maybe something else."
Lootah nods slowly, and closes his eyes momentarily. A gust of wind picks up from the rear, thrusting his mane and tail forward. As this happens, he takes a step forward, toward the obviously emotionally scarred mare. "I'm very sorry for what's happened to you.. but, if there are others that arrive.. the more of us there are, the more likely we are all to survive." A hint of compassion there on part of the still nameless male, but at least he was trying.
"Or the morely likely we'll all get caught in something...like a fire or a plague." she says. She has a bit of a bitter look on life at the moment, after the loss of her twins. Now that she has won the staring contest, she keeps her ground. Not a challenge, but part of her still feels like a lead mare, defending her land.
A laugh escapes the stallion, who is trying his best to be understanding and encouraging all at the same time. "Really? A fire, a plague?" He asks between laughs, and then tones it down. "I would think that wolves or cougars would be our most likely causes of demise.. not unlikely natural disasters." Lootah's laughter was not malicious in any way, but more just.. suprised that she would think that up. Seeing her stance, he once again raises a brow and grins. "You seem like a leader.. am I wrong about that?"
Starlight's ears go back. "Maybe more likely, but to live very long, you have to expect anything." she says, with an irritated snort. "You heard me before...I was the lead mare of the herd here."
Dandelion hasn't had good grass in months, and having to watch out for herself, had taken to voracious grazing to get the most out of what little food she had found and little time she had to eat before getting hunted after by more predators. With that, the mare has devoured quite a bit of grass whilst listening to the other two. "So what is your name?" she finally puts to the stallion, not having yet heard it.
Lootah has all bit given up on the stubborn mare, in instead turns to the one who is significantly more decent. Smile on his face, Lootah takes a step toward her and flicks his tail this way and that, still running on the bit of adrenaline that he'd used in order to gallop toward these two. "Oh, I'm sorry!" He said, and chuckled a bit at his own foolishness. Rudeness? .. No, he just forgot. "My name is Lootah."
Despite her reservations, Starlight lowers herself to lie down in the grass with a heavy sigh. She glances up at the sky, wondering what she should do. She feels lost, and she's been alone a long while now. Can she stand to join another herd?
Dandelion whuffles at Starlight idly. The palomino mare does not seem interested in challenging for leadership, but is very happy just to have company. She feels sad for Starlight and what she's gone through, but hopes the older, experienced mare could find it in her heart to love herdmates again. She nibblegrooms a moment on Starlight's mane, then puts her muzzle out to breath-exchange the stallion. "Lootah," she says, hoping she pronounces it right.
Lootah had given Starlight a fair enough chance to join him in wherever he went.. and he'd been turned down plenty of times. As far as he was concerned, the mare could lay here and wallow in her depression for the remainder of her days. Though it was a harsh thing to think, he still feels pity for the older female. It shows in the way he glances down at her, his ears folding back just a bit. With a sigh, Lootah is obviously a bit thrown off by the sudden greeting from the other mare, Dandelion, but he returns the greeting with a gentler huff of breath as well.
Starlight lifts her head as her mane is nibbled. Her ears flick. It brings back memories of herdmates, of happier times. The chestnut mare rises to her hooves, and she returns the gesture to Dandelion. Then, softly, she whuffs a breath at Lootah.
Dandelion stretches her neck out as Starlight returns her mane nibble-grooming. "Could we stick together?" she asks. "What shall we call ourselves?"
Hearing the whuff from Starlight, he blinks, and merely nods his head. After being treated as a hostile when he'd done nothing wrong, a bit of bitterness or even dislike for the older mare was quite understandable in his mind, but that didn't mean he didn't have to be civil. Mares were very valuable, even the ones who didn't immediately take to him. "That'd be the smartest plan of action, I believe." Lootah says calmly, and looks toward the horizon, seeing the various tinges of greens and yellows, and even blues and lavenders from the sky. He blinks once more, a name coming to him from out of no where. "Amarillo.." He says absent-mindedly.
Starlight's ears flick a little at Lootah's reply. It wasn't even a proper reply to her. "I would try a herd again...besides, I have experience in leading." she says. "Amarillo?" she then asks the stallion. Had she brows, she would have quirked one.
Dandelion nickers, "Neither of you will get argument from me. I haven't been in a herd since I was a filly in my foal-herd. I have no experience, just trying to save my own tail as a lone horse." She whuffles at bit at Lootah's shoulder, inhaling his scent, then moves to nibble lightly at the stallion's mane.
"As do I." Lootah spoke toward Starlight, taking in a deep breath and clearing his throat. "I'm glad that you both agree, then." Another smile appeared, and he nodded briefly at the name. "Yes, Amarillo." No reason for the name, it just came to him, and there was no argument from either side, so he assumed it was passed. With a blink, the stallion's neck twitched a bit at the sudden touch from Dandelion's muzzle on his mane, and he was a bit lost as to what to do. Of course the attention was enjoyable, but was it apppropriate at this time? A blink was given, and he takes in a breath of the mare's scent as well, nickering softly.
"What's it supposed to mean?" she asks. "I mean...sagebrush, my herd name before...sagebrush grew in the lands." she says. She noses lightly at Dandelion. Slowly, she begins to remember why she loved herd life so much...because she had a family.
Dandelion breaks from the eager affection to the stallion to nicker toward Starlight, "I think its a color. Its fine for me. Did you have a different preference?" The palomino flicks her tail.
"A color, but from our ancestors, long passed." He says, and grins as he remembers stories told in different languages by the elderly stallions and mares of his birth herd. Why it came to mind was rather a mystery to the painted mustang, but he seemed to like it well enough, as did the other two. At least, they weren't outrightly offended by it, or disagreeing with it. Taking a step away from both of the mares, he is drawn to a bit of a vantage point, though hills are few and far between in this vast prairie.
Starlight hmms. "But colors aren't always able to be seen...but we would be. Even at night." she says. "I dunno...I guess the name doesn't matter." she says, though she still doesn't get why anyone want want to call a herd a color, unless it was the same color as all the horses in it.
Dandelion finds a lush clump of prairie grass and continues her earlier engorging on it, ripping and half-chewing, half-swallowing a fair bit. "Is there water somewhere about? This heat is starting to get to me," she nickers, flicking her tail back and forth to try and fan herself a bit from the late summer heat.
Standing on top of a very minor hill, he can at least see the vastness of land sprawled out in a different perspective. To the northwest, the trees seem to thicken in volume, which leads the stallion to believe that water might be in that direction. It certainly wasn't anywhere else; all other directions led to dryness, it seemed. Tossing his head, Lootah glances over to the mares, and then breaks out into a full gallop immediately, toward the northwest. If there was water, he would find it, and report it back to them. Such were the duties of the stallion of a herd. To protect and provide.
Starlight watches the stallion...gallop off. In the wrong direction. Starlight's ears flick, but she says nothing to him, instead turning to Dandelion. "Of course there's water...I'll lead you to it if you'd like." she says.
