Characters:
Dilana - female Whitetail Deer Fawn
Fennel - female Raccoon
Setting:
Old Chestnut - Late Spring (RL day 1)
-----------------------------------
It's somewhat early in the morning, just a bit after sunrise. The air is cool and there is a gentle morning breeze blowing through the area. Foxglove is already awake and watching her little daughter sleep, but soon Dilana's eyes open as she awakes for her second day of life. She stands up after a little bit of a struggle and walks out from the hole in the chestnut tree on her wobbly little legs, glancing around the area with her ears perked high.
Fennel comes strolling through the underbrush, ducking under a bush and then jumping up onto a log and padding along it for a bit. She's nearing where the deer herd tends to linger - not that she's paying much attention to where she's headed. She's paying so little attention, in fact, that she steps right off the end of the log near the chestnut tree and tumbles down with a huff.
Dilana hears the noise of the raccoon falling off the log and turns toward it, tilting her head curiously at the new animal who was about as big as she was at least as big as she was, if not slightly bigger, though her long legs did still give her a height advantage. She doesnt move toward the raccoon, just stands her ground and watches.
Fennel shakes herself off, her fur fluffing up as she does. Okay, now she certainly looks a bit bigger, but how much of that is just fluff? She starts to continue on, and gets a few steps before stopping. Wait... was there something over there? She turns her head, looking around. Fawns, though, are well-suited to be hidden, especially in the dappled light of the early morning, and the raccoon can't quite locate her. She chuffs. "Must be a not a thing," and starts to continue onwards.
Dilana blinks as the raccoon looks back at her after moving on a bit, then turns to continue on as if it didn't see her. She walks after this fluffy creature, driven by curiosity, and though she can't talk yet, she gives a fawnish bleat as she finds she's unable to keep up with the raccoon.
Fennel jumps up as she hears a sound behind her, and spins around! "Not a not a thing?" Now that Dilana's moved out of hiding somewhat, the raccoon does manage to notice her, and she sits back on her haunches and looks up at the fawn. "Hidden thing. Deer thing. Hidden deer? Not a hidden deer! Not now." Of course, Dilana probably can't understand what the raccoon's saying. Which may well be for the best.
Dilana continues walking after the raccoon even as she stops and turns around. She is just a couple feet away when she too stops and looks back at Fennel with a curious expression. Indeed if she could understand what the raccoon was saying, it would probably just confuse the heck out of her. She makes another sound as she looks Fennel over.
Fennel's making lots of sounds back, it seems. "Small deer. Small-deer words aren't deer words. Yet." She nods to herself, as though this is important. She draws herself forward, taking a few steps closer with a rolling gait that's rather odd-looking, to a long-legged deer. Then she grins, and tries to imitate the fawn's bleat. It's not really very close at all, though she grins proudly.
Dilana watches as Fennel talks to her, her ears swiveled forward. She too tries to imitate the sounds she is hearing, but it comes out as gibberish. A tilt of her head is given as she watches Fennel move with that odd shorter legged gait. She makes a happy sound now and starts walking around Fennel in circles.
Fennel listens to that gibberish intently, hmming and nodding her head from time to time. It's nonsense, of course, but that doesn't stop her from paying close attention to it. Might be important nonsense. She turns her head to watch as Dilana starts circling her, and then on one of those circuits, she lifts her fluffy tail to brush it at the fawn's nose.
Dilana stops suddenly as she feels Fennel's tail brush against her nose. She backs up a little, then feels a bit of a tickle on her nose and finally sneezes. The sneeze is enough to knock out her balance and she falls to the ground in a sprawled leggy heap. She then gazes up at Fennel again as she tries to untangle her legs and stand up again.
Fennel huffs! She turns around, her tail swishing back and forth. "Small deer turns even smaller. Collapse the leg extensions." She waddles over, leaning in and peering at Dilana's face now that the fawn's head is at about her level. "...I could be tall, with leg extensions. Can't steal yours..." she shakes her head... "They're attached. Gotta find my own. Where'd you get yours?" she asks, head tilted to the side.
Dilana stops trying to stand up when Fennel comes over to look her right in the eye. She blinks a bit, then moves her head closer still and sniffs at Fennel, taking in the raccoon's scent. She finally rolls onto her stomach and just lays there, watching this curious new creature she's found. She does try to mimic her speech sounds still though.
Fennel is like a walking library of scents. There's a musky sort of scent of the actual raccoon, but there's also the earthy scent of mud, and the green scents of various herbs and plants she's trampled through... some familiar, some not, to a little fawn. Her tail sways back and forth, and she chrrps to Dilana, listening to that mimicry. "Going to be clever, you are! I can tell."
Dilana is not really familiar with any scents yet, as she's only just been born yesterday, everything is a new experience for her. All she really takes from sniffing Fennel is that the raccoon smells different than her mom does. She tilts her head as Fennel talks to her again, almost as if she knows she is talking about her, then she tries her mimicry again, starting to get a bit more control over the sounds. Still comes out gibberish, but at least sounding closer to the words she's trying to copy.
Fennel listens carefully to Dilana's response. It's like a conversation! She nods her head at one bit she seems to find particularly interesting, then tilts it to the opposite side of the way the fawn's is tilted. "Really? Are you sure? Well, I suppose you would be, wouldn't you?"
Dilana may not be able to actually hold a conversation yet, but she's enjoying herself none the less, thinking that this is some sort of game that Fennel is playing with her. She tilts her head the other way and keep trying to mimic the raccoon's words, looking quite happy with herself.
Except for being at least half nonsense, it does sound rather like a conversation, though. There's one voice, and then there's another voice, going back and forth with each other. Fennel hmms at a bit of that babbled mimicry. "Wooden ewe? Oh, I've never met a sheep like that! Is that something you deer encounter frequently? Are sheep the fluffy version of deer?"
Dilana finally seems to grow tired of this mimicing game, perhaps mostly because she's growing hungry now. Little Dilana finally stands up again and slowly walks past Fennel as she heads back over to her mother and starts to nurse
Fennel stays where she is, watching as Dilana heads back to the mother deer. What must -she- think, having seen this? Well, clearly Fennel didn't seem to be a threat... just an odd creature who amused her fawn for a while.
Dilana drinks her fill of mother's rich milk, then lets go of the teat and moves toward a patch of thick grass, laying down in it, she yawns a bit and looks back at Fennel again, just quietly watching this new 'friend' of hers.
Fennel pads over towards Dilana once again, her tail swaying behind her as she comes. The grass makes for a good camouflage for the fawn, but Fennel knows where she's headed to, this time. "Small-deer words are good words. Good for talking with," she says, smiling to the tired-seeming fawn.
Dilana actually seems to nod her head at Fennel's statement. She once again tries to mimic the raccoon, and mixed in with the gibberish, it almost sounds like she says deer, though it's still garbled.
Fennel perks her ears up at that quite-possibly a word, and grins. "Clever small-deer, yes. I thought so. And I'm right, because I'm clever, too. You'll probably be clever like me. Clever deer!"
Dilana yawns again, her eyelids starting to get rather heavy. Seems it's time for this little doe to have another nap. She lays her head softly down atop her forelegs, looking up at Fennel one last time before she closes her eyes and begins to drift off to sleep.
Little ones sleep a lot. That's okay. Fennel watches with a smile as Dilana drifts off to sleep, murmuring something that might be a lullaby or might just be nonsense syllables. Or might be both. Then, once the fawn's dozed off, she gives herself a little shake, and wanders off again, for now. She'll likely be back again.
