The sun is bright, today. So why is it so cold? The spring air has a chill to it, a late cold snap that the gusting wind only makes seem more frigid. Not that Niyt seems to mind; she sits atop a small hilltop, eyes closed and her muzzle pointed up into that cold breeze, tasting the scents on it as it blows her fur into disarray.
Len is not far away, trotting jauntily up the hill with similiar intentions. But, alas, she first catches Niyt's scent on the wind, and then catches sight of her as she rounds the crest. "Hello again." She greets plesantly, hoping not to startle the other female. "Sorry to disturb you. Didn't know this hilltop was already taken." She grins, shaking some wind-borne dust from her fur.
Niyt smiles, halfway turning to face Len. "Oh, it's no problem. There's plenty of room here... and the wind is hardly going to stop blowing by because there's too much of a crowd. It's not one to listen to such things."
A howl echos in the distance as Alaqua makes her presence known to the pack of Cerulean. It seems that she was out taking a long walk and getting in touch with the spirit of the cacti, or perhaps a few trees in the distance. Either way, she has returned and she seems to be in good spirits. "Good eve." She calls to her daughter and best friend, smiling fondly.
"Why, thank you." Len responds, continuing her march forward to settle in the grass and enjoy the wind. Every little rise and fall, niche and eddy in the wind bringing melodies and tunes to mind, floating back and forth through her mind on the breezes. "I should hope not. Because a third just joined our crowd." Len comments as Alaqua approaches. "Hello!"
Niyt smiles as Len joins her atop the hill. Her ears perk at her mother's howl, and she nods. "Good evening," she calls back, and grins. "More for the wind to gossip about. It does love spreading rumors..." As she says that, the fur between her ears fluffs up, as if by a particularly strong gust.
"The wind gives you rumors, it just gives me bad news." Alaqua says as she lets out a puff of breath, giving herself a shake of her fur as she sags some against her friend Len. With a wide splitting yawn, she settles her gaze upon her daughter for a moment. "Has it really been a full turn of the seasons since I've had you?" She asks with a wag of her tail. "This time last spring, I was popping you out." She says with a grin.
"Spreading rumors, spreading change...the list goes on." Len smiles, but tilts her head to Alaqua. "Bad news?" she is soon distracted, however and wrinkles her nose. "Lovely description, Qua. Really employs the magic of pupbirth." Popping someone out...poor Len.
Niyt laughs. "It's the wind. They're the same things, sometimes. Bad news, rumors, change... the wind doesn't understand good news or bad. All it knows is what's different." She faces back to her mother, though her eyes are staring blindly into space. She grins. "Longer than that. Two years, since you had me."
"Really? Has it been two years?" Alaqua says with a teasing grin on her face. "I thought I had you fooled puppy." She says with a smile, giving her a lick on the cheek. "Happy pupbirthday, Niyt." She says as her tail wags a few more times. "Now, when are you going to introduce me to Zuphi?" To the topic of bad news, she shifts her stance up a bit and bumps shoulders to Len.
"Happy birthday." Len tells Niyt, returning the pressure to Alaqua's shoulder, and continuing on with "The winds of change...they're always blowing." but she falls silent as they begin to speak about someone named Zuphi. This is family speak, so she returns to enjoying the wind, letting it plant the paintings of sound in her mind.
Niyt grins. "For all I know, mother, you had me four years ago, but decided you enjoyed it so much you made me go back and do it over again," she replies playfully, and nuzzles back at her mother's cheek, her tail wagging. She grins over to Len, at well, bobbing her head at birthday greetings. At that question from her mother, though, she blushes. She knew she couldn't keep anything like that from her mother - but still. "Soon," she replies softly. "It's just... it's all so new, and fresh, and... I don't want to scare him."
"Oh, you won't be scaring him pup, your father would." Alaqua says with a smile on her face as she looks amused, eyes rolling upwards. "Just introduce us, it won't be a big deal, Niyt. We already know about him." With a wry grin over to Len, she chuckles.
Bringing the boyfriend to meet mum and dad...Len dreads the day when she has to face such a predicament. "Its hard to keep secrets from someone who can, quite literally, learn your deepest secrets while you sleep." She winks, chuckling dryly. Her friend knows what happens before it happens...must get boring.
"Well, yeah," says Niyt with a laugh. "Zuphi's already worried enough that he's going to have to scrape and crawl. I don't want to have dad freaking out because I'm with a boy at all!" She sighs, and nods a bit. "But... you're right. I should bring him in to see you."
"Yes, you -should- bring him to meet us, and he does not need to scrape and crawl, just be honest and polite." Alaqua says with a cheeky grin on her face.
"What she means by that is: Bring him to meet us, but don't let him too close to your father if you intend on having pups." Len teases, settling onto her belly against the cool grass.
"Yes. Being honest and polite is a good policy." Shag steps out of the shadows, or wherever he's been hiding his large body, coming through the swaying grass. He regards the gathering with a large, affectionate smile, just like the rest of him is large and affectionate. "Hello, you all. Important things are apaw, are they?"
Niyt nods to her mother. "I know, it's just..." She trails off - and then blushes at Len's comment. She smiles at the sound of her father's voice, her tail giving a wag. "Hello," she says warmly, though she doesn't answer his question. Too many thoughts, too few of them coherent!
With a wag of her tail, Alaqua looks amused as she leans herself against Shag's shoulder, slumping with a loud yawn in her throat. "So, Niyt says she is /finally/ going to introduce us to this boy of hers that she has been hoarding all to herself." She says as her tongue lolls out in a playful manner, ears perking forward. "You have anything to say to your father about that?" She asks, putting her on the spot.
"Boy?" Shag asks, doing his best to sound surprised. That's something /kind/ of new. It's not like he uses his abilities to spy on them. Much. Of course he doesn't. He turns to his daughter and sits down on his haunches. "Zuphi. That's his name, isn't it?" he asks, trying to sound gruff as he speaks. Can't sound *too* interested...
Niyt steps forward, and nudges at Shag's cheek with her nose. "You know Zuphi, dad." In fact, he was there when they first met, as little puppies! Not that it was exactly the same, then - little puppies and two-year-old wolves do very different things together. Two whole years! Where has the time gone? She's quite aware that she's inherited her own abilities from somewhere - and so she doesn't really have secrets. Sometimes, though, it's better to pretend. "Well, he came back, and..." And childhood friendship discovered new depths. "...he wanted to court me. And I said yes."
"Oh, really? -You- said -yes- without talking to us first?" Alaqua hums quite loudly in a stern manner as she squints her eyes at the younger wolf. Shifting her gaze to her mate, then back to the girl, she says, "Hardly traditional. I do believe Zuphi is to ask Shag here for permission to court you, /before/ you tell him yes or no." She says as she clears her throat. "The order of balance has been toppled my dear girl. That is not good. The spirits must surely be upset." She perks an ear as if to listen to the wind. Well, are they?
"Yes. We're not quite *that* independent a pack out here," Shag says, nodding sagely and closing his eyes, as if discerning what the spirits say about this latest arrangement. "Zuphi has usurped the traditional order of things! This might require some rectification." He smiles, wryly. "Might have to bring him here. So that he can be properly... scrutinized for his boldness."
Niyt pulls herself up straighter, her tail out level and her ears erect - not bending to those stern tones from her mother. "I did. I like him." As if that answers all the complaints. "I don't think the spirits care. At least, not the big ones." The little meddling ones - all the wolf mothers and grandmothers of generations past - yeah, they probably care. But Niyt doesn't care that they care! After a moment, she relents a little, and nods. "I'll bring him, really. But it's not like he's trying to usurp things. I'm the one who said yes, and kissed him, and all that." Oops. In things she hadn't quite meant to admit to her parents....
"And.... you -kissed- him?" Alaqua says with a raise of her brows upwards as she turns her attention towards Shag once more, clearing her throat loudly. "Some boy put his muzzle on your daughter's. Can you believe that?" She asks with a squint of her eyes as if she was shocked beyond belief. "What was that?" She asks, listening to the wind. "No, I do not think Shag should throw him in the river." She twists an ear towards Niyt once more, grinning.
Shag's breath catches in his throat. There's an audible "Hgrrk!" from the large male, as he takes in the implications. She... kissed him?! Why didn't he pick up on /that/ little detail? "Kissed," Shag says, repeating it to realyl get it. "Ah, um... well." He looks at Niyt with a mixture of pride and confusion. She's doing so many things on her own, but... he doesn't know about any of them! "Niyt." He blinks, licks his lips. "I... we... trust your judgment of course. I... would be pleased to see him again."
Yeahhh. Oops? Niyt didn't exactly mean to break the news that way. Not that she's sorry - no, she's still got that confident - maybe just a teeny bit defiant - posture, and she certainly isn't regretting it, but... well, she wanted to break this on her parents gently. "I'll bring him by," she reiterates. She pauses, then, not quite sure what to say - and not wanting to make any more shocking confessions! "He'd like to see you again, too. We... it'll be nice." She hopes. Oh, she hopes. Please, no throwing in rivers! She wags her tail hopefully, smiling.
Grinning, Alaqua leans into Shag's shoulder and plops her head down just beneath his chin. Despite the shocking tidbit that Niyt has been smooching boys, she looks quite happy. "Well, good, we will have ourselves a nice double date and get to know each other." She says with a wag of her tail behind her, followed by a lick to Shag's chin. "She's a big girl now and she can make her own decisions." She says with a hum in her throat. "This Zuphi boy better be good to you, Niyt, or else he may be dinner."
As if anyone who was mean to their little darlings would actually get the dignity of being eaten. Shag shudders to think what *he* would do. At least Len hasn't gotten there quite yet... "I'm sure it would be nice," he agrees with Niyt. And he really does think so. He wants to talk to that Zuphi kid... he still sees him as the youngster he arrived here as. "I'm... I'm proud of you, Niyt," he says quietly. "I... just want you to know that."
"He will be," Niyt says earnestly. "He's been a real gentleman, and everything." And this time, she does manage to stop talking before saying anything more she shouldn't. But she says he's been a gentleman! That should be comforting, right? Nothing wrong with being gentlemanly. It's all perfectly sweet and innocent. At least, as innocent as any two young wolves caught up in romance can be. She smiles, hearing a sort of capitulation in her father's words. Not that her parents won't still grill her poor boyfriend - but they'll come to accept it. She leans in, nuzzling at her father's cheek, and then her mother's. "I love you, dad," she says. "And you, mom."
"Good, just like your father, a real gentleman and everything." Alaqua says with a smile as she turns her head to stare into Shag's eyes with a happy expression on her face. "Do you remember when we first met, my love?" She says with a giggle on her face as she takes in a deep breath. "Do you remember -our- first kiss?" She hums quietly. "You know Niyt, your father is my first kiss as well. He was always a gentleman with me, even if -he- was the nervous one."
"I was the nervous one?" Shag asks, blinking. He takes a moment to think, and then nods. "Ah. Well. Yes. I suppose I was." He gives them both a bit of an embarrassed smirk. At least his own daughter had taken the initiative with Zuphi. Heh, boy always did strike him as a little skittish... He returns the young wolf's nuzzle. "I can't believe so much time has passed," he whispers."
Niyt grins. Reminiscing is safe - maybe remembering their own young romance will make her parents look on hers more favorably. "I think we're both pretty nervous," she says, and smiles. "But in a good way. Like... it feels like dancing and suddenly dancing up into the wind, just quivering and... and flying together, even when we're just sitting next to each other."
"Yes, you were very nervous, Shag. I remember you were torn between taking me as your mate, or living a life of solitary on a mountain somewhere." Alaqua says with a smile on her face as she noses at his cheek a few times. "It took me nearly leaving for you to use your gift to peek into the future and see the wonderful life you almost gave up." She gives his ear gently. "And I am so glad that you did. It has been the perfect romance." She hums quietly, before clearing her throat as she looks over towards Niyt. "You two better keep the quivering to a minimum."
"Mmm. Yes. wait. I wasn't going to live on a /mountain,/" Shag says, peering at Alaqua. "I was just going to... live by myself. But still around others." Because that makes sense. He kisses Alaqua's cheek and looks back at Niyt. "Romance does that to you," he tells her with a smile. "But just remember, with high heights come long falls."
Niyt manages - barely - to keep from rolling her eyes as her mother tells her to minimize quivering. Like she's going to avoid that wonderful feeling! Not that she expects her parents to understand entirely. Sappy as they are for each other... they're still all grown, and can't be expected to realize how things are in the here and now for their daughter. "But you got together. Even though there were scary cliffs, and you might fall," she says with a smile. And so she should get to do the same, is implied.
"Yes, we both almost fell, but we held tight to each other and pulled ourselves to the top." Alaqua says with a smile as she feels Shag's kiss against her cheek. Her tail starts to wag a bit more harder now as she tilts her head up at him, staring in a long, love sick manner. "I am glad that you didn't decide to live by yourself. I would have been heart broken and puppyless." She says with a smile. "And our pups have been the best part of our life together."
"Indeed. We don't doubt your ability to reach the same heights as much." Shag smiles and leans forward, looking Niyt in the eye. "Indeed, I have hopes that you will reach higher than I ever have. But it is always the duty of parents to tell their children of obstacles they may face." He doesn't want to be a sourpuss. But it's just important that she knows that it won't always be sunshine and rainbows. "And, yes... seeing you all here makes everything all the more worth it."
Okay, her parents are finding new levels of sappy to explore with each other! And that's saying something, because Niyt is pretty used to seeing them moon over each other. She grins a bit - and is horribly embarrassed, at the same time - as they talk about how important the puppies are to them. "We've got a whole big family, now..."
"We sure do and I couldn't be happier, Niyt." Alaqua says with a wag of her tail. "You are the most important parts of my life." Her smile is geniuine across her face as she takes in a deep breath of the crisp clean air. Stretching herself out in a sprawl upon her stomach, she tucks herself just in front of Shag's forepaws, staring up at him with a proud smile on her face. "All of them are perfect."
"Perfect." Shag smiles back and bumps his nose against Alaqua's. Bump. If Niyt thinks they're pulling all the stops, then she doesn't have any idea what they look like in their spare time! "A whole big family," he reflects. All of them potential... vessels. Of the same power that suddenly woke up in himself. He still isn't used to thinking that. "And you'd best be adding to it, once you get all settled down from your first dates!" Shag says, wagging his paw at Niyt. Go on, shoo, make some grandkids already!
Niyt smiles, and nods to her mother - a little awkward, but happy. At her father's comment, she can't help but grin impishly. "I'll be sure to tell Zuphi you said that," she teases, her ears perked and tail wagging. Somehow, she thinks all this will turn out okay. Her boy will meet her parents, and no blood will be spilt or drownings occur... and in the end, he'll be part of that growing family too!

She gives his ear gently.
