Place: Lazuli Den Site
Time: Evening
Members: Felstride, Storm, Thorne, Miakoda
The alpha is just making her way back to the den site after going on patrol once more, something that has to be done after all. Storm glances around as she makes her way toward the den, a yawn escaping her while she snuffles at the passing breeze to check the area out. So far so good. She settles back on her haunches, forepaws settling down in the soft earth while her tail flicks about. Her ears twitch while she waits to see which pup will come to greet her first, normally its Larkspur...
The den and the surrounding forest are unusually quiet for this time of day, in part because the alpha male is also away from it at present. While either Storm or Felstride would remain close by, something unnerved the male long enough to send him away from the comfort of the earthy den and its solitude. It's a wonder he didn't run into Storm on her own patrol, but he lingered at a particular spot near the river, pacing anxiously up and down the banks with his nose to the wet grass. After a long while, Felstride lifted his head and turned from the running stream south to where the growing dark of the forest greated him. A hint of worry glints behind his eyes as he emerges from the dense ferns, his ears ticking forward as his attention eventually falls to the lone Storm. He churrs out a greeting, a subdued one, moving closer to his mate with a strange, purposeful caution.
Hah! It's not Larkspur that emerges from the den first, it's Thorne! He pulls himself from the hole in the ground, stretching his lanky form out in the process. Yawning in a lazy fashion, the white wolf rolls his shoulders, tongue lolling as he greets Storm, "Howdy, Storm. Seems like a lovely day..."
Storm eyes the den still and tilts her head while peering at Thorne as he comes out instead of Lark or the others. "Evening Thorne..." She's about to say something else before Felstride catches her attention, her tail sways about and she smiles, though this only lasts for a few moments as she watches him. "Felstride... What's wrong?" Her heart is already sinking though as if she just knows it's one of the pups. She's on her paws and pushing past Thorne to look into the den before getting a response from her mate though.
The arrival of the ghost wolf gets little from the alpha male but a tick of his ear, sliding briefly to one side of his head followed by the barest movement of his eyes before Felstride's attention is quickly returned to his mate. He opens his muzzle to speak but no sound comes from him, and the wolf only shakes his head in muted concern. Felstride's tongue swipes across his teeth as he turns north, back in the direction of the river, brilliant eyes squinting in the coming darkness for any sign of movement beyond the wind in the trees. His stance is tense, nervous, fur bristling just around the edges of fear... until his head turns back to Storm and the ghost wolf Thorne behind her, and he finally forces a voice through a wavering, disconcerted whine, "Is Larkspur here now?" comes his harsh whisper. "Did she come back while I was gone? Please tell me that she came back to the den..." He pleads, taking a slight step forward hoping upon all hope that Storm will banish all his worldly fears about his daugter.
Thorne is quick to leap to the side as Storm shoves her way past into the den. Alarmed, he looks to Felstride, alert on the instant. He's not too keen on what is going on - he has not the parental-instincts, after all, but the sudden anxiety the Alphess displays is enough to start the suggestion. As Larkspur's name is voiced, he gets a clearer indication, and lifts his nose. Silently, the white wolf shakes his head; Larkspur was not in the den, where he just came from. "Skies above, did something happen?" he asks, not softly, but not demanding.
Nothing comes from the den, no words to say that yes lark is there. Storm scrambles out of the den looking around wildly before her gaze rests on Felstride once more. "No.. No she's not here.. Felstride, what, where.. Where could she have gotten to?" She questions, voice filled with thick worry while her stomach tenses up into knots at the thought of just where Larkspur might be.
Oh geeze, what now? Miakoda arrives on the scene in time enough to .. pft, sense something rotten in the air. And yes. Tenseness and worry feels like rot. Pushing through the brush, the Beta's ears perk forward and, almost unwillingly, does she emerge from the foliage, glancing to the Alphas and Thorne. Dare she ask? "What's wrong?" .. 'now' is just barely held back as she splays her ears to the side, approaching no one in particular, merely placing herself within the vacinity.
"The river," is all that Felstride manages to force from his throat before overcome with a tremendous anxiety, his hackles bristling in sheer terror rather than anger. A third voice causes the wolf to whirl unexpectedly around, quite undone and disheveled from his usual self, before he swallows in an attempt to calm himself. "Oh, Miakoda," he breaths, "Larkspur.. I cannot find her." It's then that he backs up a few paces, bounding to the edge of the forest wherein he peers long and hard, shifting his weight on his paws. "I know that she was upset about staying so close to the den and wanted to be with that Viridian pup." That's right, Haze has no name in the father's mind. "But I would not think..." he shakes his head. "And now I cannot find her and her scent... it ends at the river." Pause. Choke.
Grave news indeed. Settling himself just a bit, Thorne is silent for only a second, mind racing; certainly the others are covering the same possibilities as he is; everything from her simply giving the pack the slip to...well, the unthinkable. Lifting his chin, blue eyes focusing on Felstride, he speaks, "So let's look for her, as a pack. The river only runs one direction and I doubt she would have managed to swim very far upstream at all..."
Storm Ears lower as she watches Felstride. "Have you searched further down?" She questions, knowing he has but she needed to ask. A glance is offered to Mia before the shewolf pushes forward going to check the river herself it seems. She most likely wouldn't believe anyone checked until she looked herself anyway, its a mother thing.
"Oh," says Miakoda, ears flattening momentarily as she watches Felstride. She glances to the den, failing to say much else. Likely thinking over things and possibilities .. yes. Surprisingly enough, she doesn't seem to have too much else to say other than that one utterance and her eyes linger now on the forest, only turning an ear as Thorne speaks. Look for her? Good idea. She nods in agreement before watching Storm go.
Felstride swallows nervously, turning back to the small gathering, eyes pausing briefly on the beta female. He blinks slowly but soon addresses Storm and Thorne. "The river runs south," he says, as if they didn't already know that, "and I did not see her anywhere nearby. Comb the water heading towards the mountains," he directs with an indication of his muzzle, "I wish to check the spot where I think she... where I scented her last before I join you." That's said with a curt nod, and the wolf takes a few nervous paces away from the group, although he eyes over his shoulder with a slightly stern gaze directed at Miakoda, asking silently, 'What is the matter?' with a subtle flick of his tail.
He supresses a shiver, trying to keep pessimistic thoughts from his mind; the river has a fast, treacherous current at points. If Larkspur was swept away...Blue eyes sweep to Storm briefly, who seems intent on searching everywhere herself, and then to Felstride. He gives a short, quick nod in affirmation, hesitating only a moment to glance towards Miakoda and then back to Felstride, briefly -- no, he doesn't understand what has happened between the other three here nor does he truly know the history of that situation -- there's just the mere tangibility of it any time all of them are together. Still, Thorne says nothing and gives little other indication as he is about to start off to the south.
Storm ears twitch as she listions to the others, her gaze sweeping over Thorne and Mia before she looks to Felstride. She isn't sure at all what to say, an inturn she shifts to follow after Felstride at some talk about looking where Larkspur last was. Maybe, just maybe there will be clues to be found there.
Miakoda listens to all without really looking at anyone, head lowering to peer beneath the underbrush from afar as if expecting to see a small muzzle poking out, hiding and giggling. Kids play hide and seek all the time, right? Of course they do. But apparently not today. She snorts a little before doing what's already been done ... sniffing around, heading in the same general direction that Storm went before, toward the river. And so because of all this movment and looking around! Miakoda doesn't note any looks given her way. Larkspur's what's important at the moment right now anyway, right? Following Felstride's words, she begins to head off to the south too, trailing Thorne. "We'll find her," said encouragingly.
Felstride's ears slowly pin back against his skull at Miakoda's behavior, although at present time he doesn't have enough sanity to split his concern neatly down the middle for his daughter and the beta. Miakoda will have to wait, whether she likes it or not. Apparently this last year has seen the alpha in better times and in better humors, and seems to have caused him to harden his spirit just a tad. But. To the task at hand, he offers another brief nod. Good. Everyone knows what they're doing. Nose to the ground, Felstride turns north again, into the woods, following the strangely terrifying sound of the river, hoping upon all hope that, perhaps, he missed something in his haste.
Without a second thought or backwards glance, Thorne slips into the undergrowth, determined to sweep along the other side of the river first, just in case the pup happened to get out at some point and trail off, possibly lost. Or otherwise.
Storm hasn't even really picked up that something is wrong with Miakoda, mostly because her daughter is missing that is enough to give her a heartattack, which it nearly did. She follows after Felstride, head low as she works on picking up the scents as well. The alpha has neverever been this worried before, an it for sure it showing.
There's something wrong with Miakoda? Pft. And so she's off to search! Over there in the opposite direction of the alphas by the river. I dunno, I'm confused a little. But what I do know is that she's seperated, following in Thorne's direction.
