Nova - female cougar
Wiraqu - male cougar
Kachina - female adolescent cougar
Minya - female adolescent cougar
---Sprawling Mesa---
Sometimes it is a long road which leads you on the path far from the only place you ever called home. Still, every journey has a beginning and an end. For Nova, she can only hope that the one that ends with her feet touching the familiar soil of Amaranth territory means the beginning of the journey that starts the rest of her life. Dark paws move with a hesitant mixture of nerves and uncertainty, but her head is held high, sea-green eyes taking in this place that had changed so much over the seasons. Could she truly find home here again after all her travels? Distracted, one foot steps down onto a branch and it snaps underfoot, sending a few birds winging skyward, Nova's eyes following them as her tail twitches behind her.
One of those changes is lying on a rocky outcropping near the edge of Amaranth's territory - near the edge, but clearly within it. A cougar. A male cougar; a full-grown one, and yet one strange to the returning female. Wiraqu lounges, a cat indolent in the thin springtime sunlight. The sound of a breaking branch makes him roll around to his feet, peering off in that direction as his whiskers twitch. He rises - stretches - then leaps off the rock and heads toward the source of that noise, unhurried curiosity in his pose.
There is another further off to the side, curled up upon the rocks, ears slowly perking forward before the feline's eyes open. Kachina takes in a soft breath and lifts a forepaw to rub across her face a few times, ears flicking frward once more movement is caught and her tail lashes at her sides. She soon catches sight of Wiraqu and watches him curiously a moment.
Another change is resting on one of the rocks after a successful hunt. When the male starts moving, Minya stands up, leaps off the rock and starts walking towards Wiraqu. She wants to see whatever he is heading toward.
The scents of others reach her nose, and in that instant Nova's eyes close, taking in the world around her through that single sense. Then, a second is added to it as her ears swivel, hearing the birds in the trees and then the tread of footfalls. Her paws feel the earth beneath her, and lastly, her eyes open as she takes another few steps forward, steeling herself for whatever might come. What comes, though, is the unfamiliar form of a male who bears the unmistakeable markings of a chieftan. Her ears flick back - so her grandfather no longer guided the clan. What of her mother mother and father then? So many questions, yet the first that comes to her muzzle, in a voice meant to carry, is this: "These are still the lands of Amaranth, aren't they?" Her eyes find the other moving towards him, but for now Kachina remains out of her line of sight. Many unfamiliar faces.
Time to investigate! Wiraqu practically bounces on his paws as he pads off to see what's happening, his tail twitching behind him like he's ready to pounce. Why, it could be anything out there. A deer. A bear. A wild horde of mice standing on each other's shoulders! Who knows? Not him, that's why he's got to find out! He notes Kachina in passing, and gives her an affectionate chuff without changing his direction. Onward to discovery! Oh, hey. Turns out? Not a deer, not a bear, and definitely not a horde of gymnastic mice. No, it's a cougar! A female one. Wiraqu grins cheerfully, padding toward her until he's a good leap and a half away - far enough to be no immediate threat, close enough to get a good look. "Why, yes. These are Amaranth's lands." His head tilts sideways, a silent question or perhaps waiting for more of hers.
Kachina slowly shifts, her slender form sitting up so she is more visable it seems. Her tail lashes slowly and she tilts her head looking towards an object that only she can see, a ear twitching forward before she just shakes her head. At the chuff her attention turns back to Wiraqu and she chuffs out to him before moving forward. She jumps down from her rocky perch. Even though she has been living with the group and getting plenty to eat she is still thin and lanky. Still young but her past did leave a lasting effect on her physical it would seem.
Minya chuffs when she gets closer to Wiraqu. She stops not very far behind him and decides to wait for the female's reaction, watching her curiously.
If she were a more shy creature, perhaps the sight of so many others might have driven her off. Even so, Nova swollows and has to martial her courage as she stands a little straighter, looking first at Wiraqu and then the two females - Kachina's motion finally having announced her presence. She takes a breath, and then speaks as if she's rehearsed lines in her head for just such an occassion. "My name is Nova. My parents are Peyote and Aurora." Her dark ears duck back slightly. "I've returned from my quest, and the spirits lead me back here, to Amaranth." She hesitates then, having finished with her practiced speech, looking at Wiraqu. "Is ... my grandfather still alive?" She asks with more hesitation now, eyeing the unfamiliar male with a look of uncertainty.
Wiraqu tilts his head back and returns Minya's greeting, then looks back to Nova once more. His amber eyes flick to the nervous gestures, but he makes no comment on them; simply waits there, patient. At least the crowd may be comforting as well as nerve-wracking; a male who greets half-grown cubs is unlikely to be fierce and threatening without reason. Of course, a male who wears Amaranth's mark is, hopefully, also unlikely to be so. At Nova's own name, he nods without recognition - at the names of her parents, there's a spark of recognition in his eyes. Okay, then. Spirits, yes, quest... His head tilts slightly, regarding her again. She doesn't look _that_ young... well, suppose some of them are longer than others, huh? Must be, and it's none of his business anyhow. /He's/ just a /boy/. "Welcome back," he says, and then his head tilts at her question. Well, he's no lineage-master, but an Amaranth cougar looking for her grandfather... he can make a guess! "Kein left Amaranth. Went off with Nyssa, this summer last. I don't know what became of him."
Kachina tilts her head while she watches the new cougaress a few moments. Her paws slowly and quietly bring her closer towards Wiraqu whom she settles downnext to upon her haunches. She is quiet though letting Wiraqu do all the talking it seems. A glance is sent towards the other young feline, a ear perking but she offers no words. She tends to be a quiet one after all.
Minya smiles when the older female finishes speaking. She takes a few steps forward, stopping next to Wiraqu. There are so many questions she wants to ask, but she decides to listen for now.
"Oh." The word comes more like a breath as Nova's ears lower slightly. What did she really expect after all this time? Time moves even when you're away, and everything changes. "Guess, it was silly of me to think he'd still be here to welcome me home, huh?" She admits, and a small somewhat shy smile quirks her muzzle. She takes a half-step forward, head slightly lowered, her unusual eyes sweeping over the marks on Wiraqu's fur. "So, can a wayward daughter of the clan still come home?" She asks, then raises her head to try and look into his eyes. She is, afterall, part of the ranking lineage, so she's never been one to lower her head too much to anyone. "Tell me, what are your names? How are things now...?" Her eyes move from him to the other two, as if this were something of great importance to her.
Wiraqu chuckles softly. "Not so silly. It's easy to forget the trails you aren't chasing," he answers easily. "On this trail... Arroyo is Matron now, the daughter of Kein and Nyssa, and I - I am Wiraqu." He ducks his head, sweeping one forepaw beneath him in a teasing sort of bow. "Welcome home, Sister." The word is formal - at least, as formal as Wiraqu can ever manage to be. Perhaps it's not quite his place to name her so; the Matron's, or that of the Shamaness, to say that she is returned from her quest; no longer a Daughter, but a Sister. He does it anyway, and lifts his head again with a sparkle in his eyes, stepping to the side as if to clear the path. He'll let the two Daughters who've come to watch introduce themselves. It'll do 'em good to remember how to talk!
Kachina knows how to talk.. When she feels like it that is. She watches the two a few moments and soon turns her head to glance at the ground batting a small rock around a few times while a soft snuffle escapes her. Her tail lashes at her side a few times, tip curling before she hears the question that is put towards her and the other it seems. "I'm Kachina.." She doesn't offer who her parents are though. Her head lowers slightly and her shoulders hunching upwards in the process. "Welcome home." Is soon said as her gaze turns back to Nova.
Minya watches until Nova asks. "I am Minya. Maul's daughter." She thinks about the other question, and after a few moments grins slightly and replies, "It's quite cold."
"Arroyo." Nova repeats the name, and then nods her head, trying to connect the pieces between then and now. Then, as if she were coming back to the present, the dark-pawed cougress bobs her head. "It's nice to get a chance to meet you all." She opens her mouth as if to say more, but it's Wiraqu's welcome, as well as Kachina's that stop her mid-thought. It's more than she could hope for, really. "Maybe... we could go find somewhere where there's a bit more sun. I'm sure it'd be warmer?" She suggests, looking between them, her tail swaying lightly behind her now that it isn't tucked so close to her body.
Wiraqu grins encouragingly to Kachina as she introduces herself. There, see? Not so hard. Talking! It's a thing. She should do more of it, or so his gaze seems to imply. After that, his amber eyes flit to Minya as the youngest of these cougars speaks her piece. He chuckles slightly. "Not for so much longer!" The male then returns his attentions to Nova, adding, "Maul is our Shamaness; I suppose you'll want to speak with her about your journey." Spirit stuff! None of his business. "The sunning spots won't have changed much in your absence, I don't think." He grins, playful. "I'm fond of the big rocks near that flowering cliff, myself."
Kachina glances towards Wiraqu, a faint smirk seen and her tail wiggles about at her side before a soft snort escapes her. Well there's her thought on the whole talking thing! Her gaze lifts skywards, ears perk and her maw parting slightly as she seems to be watching something.. An then its gone just as quickly and her head lower once more. "Spring is coming.. Should wipe away winter without a problem."
Minya says, "I will tell her when I see her." She smiles at Nova and after a short while says, "Welcome."
Where Arroyo only lingers in her memory, Maul is a name she knows. Just what the Shamaness would say when it comes to her long-absent neice is anyone's guess. "Y..yes. That's probably the right way to go about things." Nova doesn't sound entirely sure, but it has been a long time since she's been part of the clan, and her memories from her childhood days are somewhat hazy. Still, as of now, she's an unmarked cougar and that means she really hasn't yet earned her place in the clan. "But it would be nice to rest my paws for a while. I traveled through the night once I started recognising the land." She chuckles a little, the first sign of her easing into a more relaxed posture. "Well, I'm going to head there then." Decision made, Nova offesr them a smile that seems to invite the company, and starts heading in the direction she believes those sunning rocks to be - and she might even be right.
Wiraqu returns the smile, ducking his head - though not his gaze - for a moment as his tailtip gives a single twitch. "I shall take the long way, I think," he says in a musing sort of tone. Halfway to himself. "See if I can rouse some prey. A snack would likely go over well." Yes. No ulterior motives here, nope. Just a good Chieftain, providing for his clan. ...and if you believe that, well, he has this lovely glacier he can sell you. A great bargain! With that, he nods to the two young females, and turns to prowl off.
Kachina glances towards Wiraqu at the tlak of him moving off to take a walk. A soft oh escaping her and she soon nods. "Alright.." This said softly, her gaze flicking one way and then another before she looks to Minya eyeing the other feline a few moments. "So.. your Minya?" How long as Kach been here and she's not bothered to speak to this cougar..
Minya says, "Yes.. and you are.. Kachina? Chaska's sister?" She takes a step towards her and stops, not sure what she should do now. She still remembers the things Chaska told her about the scary bird.
Kachina blinks as she hears her brother's name and watches Minya a moment. "Yes.. I'm Chaska's sister." She tilts her head. "He.. Told you about me?"
Minya says, "Yes, he told me about you and..." She pauses, trying to find the best way to say it. "...what happened to you."
Kachina isn't sure what to say, her tail flicking a few times while she glances to the side, a faint sniff escapes her. "I see.." She offers after a moment. "I haven't spoken to him in a.. Long time. How is he?"
Minya says, "I think he's fine but... I think he was a bit angry at you because you didn't speak to him or something." She moves closer and attempts to nuzzle the older female's foreleg.
"I don't speak with anyone.. He should get over it." Kachina says with a soft tone at the thought, her tail lashes. At the sudden touch she actually pulls away from Minya. Her gaze turns to the other watching her a few moments and her ears lower and eyes close. She can't recall how long its been since she was trapped in that hole, out of the tree taken she was there the longest and perhaps it did affect her greater, but she just can't find a way to get past it. "You and Chaska friends?"
Minya doesn't move closer after Kachina pulls away. "Yes, we are friends." she says. "But... why don't you speak with anyone?"
Kachina shifts to her paws and slowly moves a few steps away, hopping up onto a rock and looks out towards the forest, ears perking forward. She heard something, only problem with her, was it real or a ghost of some animal that she swears she's been hearing all day. Her jaws tenses a moment before she glances towards Minya watching her now. "I don't have anything to talk about." Her tail lashes a few times and she sits to her haunches, forepaws gripping at the rock she is upon. "I suppose there are other reasons. But its nothing for you to worry about."
Minya says, "I'm sure you could find something to talk about if you want to talk." Hmm. What could the reasons be? "Why do you think so?" she asks.
Kachina shifts to settle herself down upon the rock she has taken over, her head lowers to her front paws. "Perhaps.. Then perhaps I just don't want to?" She questions while her eyes close.
Minya says, "It's okay if you don't want to, just say that." She finds another nearby rock and starts moving towards it. "But maybe you should want to talk sometimes?" She jumps onto the rock and decides to rest and think about Kachina. Strange... and Minya will definitely want to learn more about her.
Kachina tends to be a strange feline.. So this is no surprize. Her form starts to relax as she feels a the sun shining down upon her, a soft breath escaping her in the process. "Maybe one day I will want too." An when that she starts to doze off.
