Who: Althaea, Nonkene
Where: Woodland Clearing
Scene:
The late hours have come to the clearing, leaving the air cold and a fresh sheet of snow over the ground. Still falling from the sky, Althaea watches each flurry scurry through the air before hitting the ground covering old tracks leading into the woods. Leaning slightly against her sleeping father, the adolescent shakes out her coat then looks around. Was anyone awake? About time to find out. Lifting herself from her seated position, she makes for the nearby bushes.
Anyone? Well, there's always someone. The birds and the bees and the big old trees! At the moment, to go with those, there's an undersized wolfdog playing around the edge of the woods. Nonkene's currently playing the 'hop through the footsteps' game, the one where she tries to follow an adult's steps precisely. Hop, skip, jump!
Althaea wouldn't have pick up on the pups playful antics if it wasn't for a sudden drop of snow from the tree tops. Picking her gaze up from the bushes and toward the fallen snow she notices the young half-breed hopping about. You don't see that everyday. Watching for a moment, Thaea moves toward the pup. "Mind if I join." She smiles remembering the time she did that as pup at the hill. Her aunt and uncles were out hunting... Those were the good times.
Nonkene pauses, her legs stretched between two paw-steps and one of them up in the air, and tilts her head to the side. "I guess. But how're you going to play?" Althaea is, after all... adult-sized.
That's a very good question but Althaea's got it all planned out. "I'll walk backwards." Yup, trying to match paw prints while moving backwards is no easy feat. Looking back at the tracks she made here, she takes a few steps back trying to place her paws back into the holes. If anyone where to suddenly wake or walk into the clearing it would be quite the sight to see.
Nonkene tilts her head, considering on that, then nods. "All right." This meets her approval, and she watches as the adult wolf gives it a try.
Head to one side, looking back, Althaea does her best to match each of her steps by first moving a back paw slowly into a slot in the snow that once belong to a fore-paw and then the other. Having not thought things through to well, moving her forelegs comes a bit of a challenge; failing quite miserably and falling to one side.
Nonkene giggles, and jumps out of the tracks to the side, putting her muzzle to the snow and tossing some up at Althaea. "You missed," she says, pointing out the obvious.
Althaea looks up with a smirk and squint. "Yeah, I did." Rolling to her belly, shuffling some snow about, she flicks some back with a paw. "Guess I need some practice."
Nonkene bounces back from the flicked snow, and laughs. "I guess. You're probably all busy with adult stuff, though." She snorts, and tosses back a clump of snow.
Althaea, busy with adult stuff? Perhaps, but nothings to important that she cant take a little time out and have a bit of fun. "Adult stuff, huh. Would an adult have time to do this.." Taking the clump of snow in the face she shakes it off and retaliates with a toss back.
Nonkene gets snowed on one ear, and she shake-shake-shakes and twitches it to get the wet stuff off, then giggles. "Maybe. I dunno. Can they?" She bounces about back and forth.
Althaea honestly doesn't know, she wasn't an adult yet. If she had to guess though she would assume not very often. "When their not on patrol or hurt they can." The young pup likely hasn't see much of anything but that these days. Since the dog incidents there's been nothing but worried faces and her brother being the way he is.. the pack sure could use some happier days.
To a pup, Althaea might as well be an adult! Nonkene laughs, and spins around in place. "I'm gonna learn how to hunt," she says as she comes back around to face the adolescent. "I dunno about patrols, though. I guess maybe I have to be older for that."
Althaea hmms and nods, giving out a smile to the pups spin. "Hunting is a good skill to learn." Patrols on the other paw.. she hasn't even done them yet. Maybe it was just a male thing, she didn't know. "You've got a long time before you start doing any of that. You have anyone to teach you the hunting?" Several offers have probably been made but if not, she'd take up the honors and teach what she knows about it.
"Uh-huh. And then I'll be useful instead of useless!" Nonkene grins, spinning herself around in the opposite direction, and wags her curly tail.
Althaea smiles, soon raising her brows. "Useless.." Wonder who told her that. "No one is useless Nonkene. Even as pups we serve a purpose. Maybe not in the ways of hunting or protecting but pups help remind us where we come from. They put smiles on our faces and keep us young." Crawling in closer to the pup she noses her softly after the spin.
Nonkene laughs, and nuzzles back, then lowers her forequarters and wiggles her tail. "I don't think useless is bad. A pretty cloud isn't useful. It's just pretty. Pretty's good. So's fun!"
"Sure it is." Thaea tells her. "It makes you smile doesn't? Clouds are the skies blanket during rainy days or when the sun isn't out." Yup, even the sky gets cold. Its a silly gesture but its better than saying a cloud is useless. "Its like the snow. It doesn't do anything but set there and make things wet. But its also fun to play in. And when it melts the grass is green and helps the trees grow big." All of this probably doesn't mean a thing to the pup, but Thaea is just just trying to make a point.
Nonkene giggles, and shakes her head. "That's not /useful/," she insists. "If everything hadta be useful, that'd be boring." She paws at the snow, and grins. "Mama says the snow comes because the Earth stole the Sky's daughter, and so she's sad and cries half the year."
Althaea has never heard it that was before. Having never questioned her aunts tales before she doesn't now. "What your mother says may be true." Everyone has their opinion. Looking to the sky through the holes in the canopy above she smiles, nose wiggling as a flake falls upon it.
Nonkene shrugs a little, and thumps herself down to sprawl in the snow. "Mama has lots of stories, but she's sad a lot, too."
Althaea looks down from the sky. "Your mother lost her sister, my mother. She also.." A pause draws over her lips and she frowns. "She'll be alright... so long as she has you and your brother. The rest of the pack too." This she says dropping her muzzle to the pup and licks the top of her head. "We're family after all and family has to stick together."
Nonkene flicks her ear at the lick, then gives her head a little shake. "I guess," she says, sounding unconvinced.
Althaea hrms. "You guess." She can barely believe it. "Well, in this family we do." Despite what one may hear, the Ute will always be there for one another. If it weren't true the pack would of fallen apart and never gotten back together. "Don't let anyone tell you different, ok."
Nonkene frowns. "Does that mean I have to stick with Kurux?" Ahh, and here comes the real reason for the pup's hesitance.
Althaea blinks, "He's your brother isn't he. You don't want to be with him?" Sure brothers can be pains and often at times bossy but how else would they be if not that. Their suppose to look after their sisters, right.. A sudden pause comes to her and she looks to one side. The side her brother was suppose to be. Hadir will never be there for her. "You may not always want to be but sometimes.. sometimes its the right thing to do." Her words soft and distracted.
Nonkene frowns, and looks aside. "He's stupid and mean," she says. Puppy is using the pouty voice now.
Althaea looks back to the pup. "Brothers can sometimes be that way." Or they can always be. She knows exactly what a brother can be like and its not always sugar and rainbows. "I'm sure he doesn't mean it." If only she believed her own words.
Nonkene frowns, but she doesn't argue with the almost-adult, just kicks at the snow and watches it scatter.
Reaching out a paw, Althaea attempts to pull the pup in against her. "It'll be alright." If Kurux were to do anything he'd have many to speak. "You can stay with me if you want." She'd watch over the pup, like a sister.
Nonkene gives herself a little shake, and bumps her nose at Althaea's cheek. "I should go back to mama. It's getting late."
Althaea nods and lets the pup go. "Tell your mother hi for me, ok." Offering a smile, she nuzzles Nonkene. "We'll see each other again soon."
Nonkene nods. "I will!" she says, and turns to trot off to the not-so-distant spot where mama makes her home... not that her mother is often seen among the pack, these days.
Althaea watches the pup trot back toward her mother, smiling all the while. Once by herself again, she curls up against her father. Tonight she would rest among the company of family.
