Ikuna (alpha)
Kurux
--------------------
The clearings become a common place of late, leaving only once to quell the grumble of hunger. Returning with several hare clinched in her jaws, Althaea heads for the center placing all but one of them among the gathering of wolves taken up there. The last she carries with her to the right of the group, dropping down to her stomach a few lengths away. Scanning the area real quick for anyone awake she hadn't noticed in her return or who had entered after, she rips into her hare when it appears she is alone.
The clearing is empty of wolves that are awake, true enough; but the same cannot be said for the trees that fringe the edge of the open space. Miakoda has tucked herself away among the trunks, having withdrawn to allow herself to observe the others while she thinks. She's been doing this most of the day and so Althaea's arrival is a rather welcome distraction. Unseen to the other she-wolf thanks to the shadows, Mia's ears prick as she watches the huntress deposit her catch and then begin to feed on her portion. Not wanting to intrude, she stays where she is... for now.
As it were, hares weren't much of a meal for a grown wolf; more like an appitizer before something greater. Althaea wasn't all to hungry however, despite what her stomach might say, so the hare serves as the perfect choice. In moments time, only patches of hair and mostly bone lay in the hares stead. Licking her lips, slowly pushing herself to a sit, the young wolf gives another look around the area again missing the hidden she-wolf visually, her scent however is not. Ears pricked, she listens.
A long day of patrols has ended, and thus Ikuna is padding back toward the clearing. He's a tired wolf, and so as he enters the area, he simply gives a soft wuff of greeting before flopping himself down. Soon, he shall join the ranks of the sleeping!
Miakoda notes that Althaea has finished eating, and then Ikuna appears on the scene too. Well, now she most certainly should go say hello at the very least; there's no more meal to interrupt and the Alpha is here. Shoving herself to her paws, the she-wolf pads out of the treeline and into the open, letting out a muffled bark of her own as a leisurely type of hello. Now with a better view, she sweeps her eyes over the group in general ... but no, it would seem that only Althaea and Ikuna are the only ones up and moving.
Out of all the sounds the clearing and binding trees have to offer, the wuff from her uncle is the first to grab her attention. Certainly not the one she expected she accepts his arrival with a welcoming nod. Standing to give approach, a few steps are taken before Althaea pauses to the sight of Miakoda. That solves the earlier mystery. Quickly voicing her welcome, Thaea moves to pick up a hare and bringing it to her uncle.
Ikuna looks between Miakoda and Althaea, and smiles. "Hey," he says, and glances to the hare brought toward him. "You've been hunting, then?" he asks, and smiles. "The deer seem a bit spooked, lately. I'm not sure why..." He sighs, shaking his head a little, then looks up to Miakoda again and nods a greeting. "Hello again."
She doesn't wish to disturb any of the wolves that are still sleeping, so she moves a polite distance from them at that same ambling pace, her tail swishing in a slow wag behind her. A smile is given to both Althaea and Ikuna although she doesn't say anything until after the other she-wolf has greeted her uncle and given him one of the hares. When he addresses her directly, though, Mia manages to look mildly self-conscious as she returns his nod. "Hi," she says to him, seeming unsure what to say beyond that.
Althaea nods in her approach. The deer did seem to be more scarce then usual but she figured it was due to her presence. Never did she think it could be due to something else. Placing the hare down in front of Ikuna, she noses it in closer before turning to Mia. "You doing alright?"
Ikuna is quiet for a moment, looking at Miakoda the also-quiet before Althaea's words draw his attention back. H glances down at the hare, though he doesn't move to eat just yet, instead slowly stretching and watching.
Kurux had been out and about wandering around. He hadn't really seen anything interesting and so he decided to come 'home' if you can call it that. Its been downright boring lately. He has been doing his own hunting and taking care of himself and doing a halfway decent job at it.
Miakoda blinks a few times when she hears Althaea's question, and it seems to stir her from that vague lost-in-thoughtness. She coughs and clears her throat, then nods and shrugs lightly. "Oh, I'm fine," she says, stirring herself to take a more active part in the conversation; in attempting to do so, she completely misses the arrival of Kurux. "Something wrong with the deer?" For her part, she hasn't noticed any change in their behavior. Of course, that is most likely due to the fact that she hasn't been paying any attention to it lately.
Althaea watches her uncle from the corner of an eye, dipping her head just a tad as to acknowledge Mia's reply. Unsure if she believes in the she-wolfs claim of being fine, she doesn't inquire about it just yet, pricking her ears to the question instead or was it to the sound of someone else entering the clearing. Not addressing it just yet, she looks out past the treeline. "I didn't see anyone else while out hunting, but.." Her thoughts drift wondering of something.
"Perhaps," says Ikuna. "I don't know their patterns here yet. Perhaps they're simply more wary than other places." He frowns for a moment, for if the deer are wary, what makes them so? After a moment he shrugs it off, returning his attention to Althaea. "But?" he prompts.
Kurux hasn't really paid any attention to the deer, but has gone more for the rabbits and other small sorts of animals. Its much more difficult to take a deer out all by yourself. He settles himself in a spot that isn't at the center of attention and listens in on the conversation.
Now that Ikuna's attention has focused on Althaea, and despite the fact that Miakoda is curious about what she has to add as well, her peripheral senses are functioning again and she detects movement nearby. Her head swings away from the pair of wolves in front of her, eyes seeking and eventually landing upon the young wolf-dog where he's sitting and listening. She hasn't seem him in quite a long while but regardless, she offers him a nod ... and a look that's both curious and, around the edges, a little wary.
Althaea is quiet for a moment, shaking her head as her uncle's voice brings her to look at him. "I came across a half eaten carcass near the log. It looked as if it was attacked by a bear but..." Another pauses brings her gaze back toward the treeline, ears twitching to some movement. A quick glance is made to Mia catching her nod to someone outside the group. "I've never heard of a bear attacking deer before, let alone eating one. Seemed odd to me." Peering over a shoulder now, curiosity getting the best of her, Thaea catches site of her cousin.
"Bear?" Ikuna hmms. "I'll look into it," he says. "This time of year, bears should be mostly calm as long as we stay out of their way. But..." if not, they're a dangerous opponent, and thus he frowns. "Oh, bear will take anything they can get. If you see one, keep your distance... especially if she has cubs." A bear will take down a wolf easily, and he has no desire to have /that/ sort of a fight. Ikuna settles himself, then begins to slowly pick at the hare before him.
Kurux has seen some bears here and there as he has looked about. He's never really paid all that much attention to them because well...they are scary and if you leave them alone they will more than likely leave you alone...like bees, only that much bigger. He notices Mia nodding to him and nods back to her. He never really got to know her all that well, she always seemed so stuck up and uptight about things anyway. Oh well, you can't get along with everyone. He figures now isn't really a moment to add his own two cents in about the bear thing so he keeps his yap shut.
With Kurux seeming less than interested in joining in the discussion, the she-wolf returns her attention back to the other two. The prospect of having to deal with a rampaging bear is anything but a happy thought, and Miakoda's ears twist backward as her nose wrinkles. Ikuna's advice to avoid any and all bears isn't needed for her; the moment she smells one, she's turning herself right around in the opposite direction. "Maybe it was just a bear that had a bad day." One can hope, anyway. With a light exhale, she sits down, tail curling around her.
Althaea looks quite surprised to hear that a bear isn't picky about what it calls a potential meal. Though it still puzzles her why. Why would a bear go after a deer when the rivers were plenty in fish. Giving her uncle a nod she tells him, "I'll keep an eye out." from over her shoulder. Watching Kurux for a few moments she turns to look at Miakoda and nods. "I hope your right." Side glaceing to the hare as its now being picked at, her ears cup.
Ikuna chuckles slightly to Miakoda. "Perhaps," he agrees. "In any case, we should all keep our eyes open." He picks at the hare a bit more, then glances up to Kurux and considers the younger male for a moment. "Hello again."
Kurux nods his head in response to his uncles greeting, "Whats up?" he responds in a non-committal way. Hopefully this won't be one of those moments where he is asked to explain himself like, where he has been and what he has been doing. He got his story straight a long time ago and practiced delivering it, so he's good...as far as it goes.
If Kurux doesn't want the 'where have you been' from their uncle what would he say if she asked it? A possible question that gives Althaea the opportunity to gaze back at her cousin. "Saw you out near the plains a few days ago.. find anything interesting?" Ok, so its not 'where have you been', she kinda knew that already, but maybe she'll get a few answers without actually having to ask.
Ikuna doesn't bother asking where Kurux has been. Didn't he just finish saying how the pack doesn't have to justify themselves to him? No, he has a different question in mind. "How's your mother doing?" He waits for that answer, then resumes eating his hare, though he keeps an ear perked for Kurux's response to Althaea.
Kurux smiles to Althaea, "I always find interesting things...you should come with me sometime. I think you'd enjoy yourself..." he responds. Yep he could take her out to meet him. Heck it might even show him just how serious he is about learning from him if he handed Althaea over. He gets to his paws and moves toward his cousin and offers her a smile, "As a matter of fact I insist.." He glances back to his uncle as he mentions his mother. He checks on his mother often and she just keeps getting stranger and stranger, though that doesn't mean that he loves her any less. He would do anything for her, "She is doing ok..." he says with a shrug.
Althaea smiles right back at him only to look skeptical seconds later. Who's to say she doesn't enjoy herself here... in the silence of the clearing or the undergrowth. Yeah, she has all kinds of fun. A total lie of course but who has to know that. "I'll give it some thought." That smile he gives, its reminds her of him- Grim. The events that happened that day.. she's going to give this /alot/ of thought.
"I hope both of you stay nearby for a while. We'll be hunting deer, if the herds settle enough," says Ikuna. He nods about Wachiwa, with a moment's sigh, then glances up at Kurux. "It's Althaea's choice... remember, your elders know things that can help you. It's important to listen."
Kurux nods to his uncle. Oh yes. Its true. His elders know much and he has listened and he intends to keep listening. Though Ikuna doesn't really strike him as his sort of 'elder', "I will certainly do my best..." he responds to his uncle and then turns his attention back to Althaea, "Maybe after the deer have settled you can join me then. You can keep an eye on me. Make sure that I don't get into any trouble." She has been so pushy after all wanting to know so much. This is her chance.
Althaea never knew Wachiwa as well as she probably should have. The events that lead to her current condition likely to blame but she doesn't let the fact things could of been different between them leading up to it. A sad look crossing her face for a moment hearing that Chewy hasn't really changed much. Ears perk suddenly to Kurux's proposal. "I'll consider it." That doesn't mean she'll go however. Keeping Kurux out of trouble was like getting Nonkene to do something bad. It just wasn't going to happen.
Ikuna nods to Kurux, then falls silent for a while, nibbling on the hare and then stretching out. He starts to drift off, tired from a long day of patrols.
