Kein - Male Cougar
Chk - Male Squirrel
- Pine Grove -
The sun is high overhead, but thankfully this pine grove offers a lot of shade. The only time Kein has spent away from Nayeli since Paoro's spirit visited has been to hunt. He has his sons helping out, and he is determined to be nearby, should Nayeli need anything. Soon, she'll be moving to the den. Kein isn't thrilled about that, even though it's an area that's easy to defend, but... Actually, now that it is on his mind, it isn't really that he's not thrilled about it. Not anymore. What negative feelings he has about that particular cave are residual, not genuine. Perhaps it is meant to be. His mother spent a lot of time in that cave in her time in Amaranth. Perhaps it is best to welcome her spirit back to this world in that very cave. With all that is on his mind, he is not paying an excessive amount of attention to his surroundings, as he usually does.
As the large cougar makes his way slowly through the grove of trees, a pair of black, inky beads watch from a dense shelter of pine needles. It doesn't take long for the squirrel to recognize the distinguishing markings, and it doesn't take much longer for him to skitter his way head-first down the trunk of the tree, stopping at eye-level to the approaching chieftain. "Psst. Hey. Hello." The squirrel's tail twitches in greeting. "How is life treating Amaranth's Chieftain? He seems jaded. Yes. Jaded. Sad."
A streak of movement within Kein's line of view cause him to stop. It takes him a moment to actually focus on the small animal, since the fur blends in so well with the tree, especially with the dim lighting, but he eventually does. The voice is what he recognizes... But then, who is to say that every squirrel wouldn't sound familiar to him, since he has heard one? Still, even if their voices do seem similar to him, what are the chances that more than one squirrel would seek him out to speak to him? "Hello again, there." Sad? Perhaps. He tries not to be, but he's really not the lighthearted child he once was. Still, to the question, he contradicts the squirrel's own answer. "I am... Fine." Things /are/ getting better. They have to be. "And you?" At least Kein can be polite, now, with little difficulty.
Chk uses the word 'sad' quite often to describe any scenario or state of being that he does not consider to be particularly fortunate, beneficial or appealing. Chk looks left, then right, scoping out the place from a lower perspective as he awaits the larger, slower-talking creature's response. He appears constantly on edge, and tense, as if ready to bolt back up the tree at a split second's notice. "Good, all is nice from here." No attempts on his life today. Plenty of food. Who could ask for more, really?
Well, the squirrel didn't object to Kein's use of the word again in his greeting, so... "I ought to thank you for... Ah, well, for telling me what you told me." He might not have appreciated it, but it was something he needed to know. Something that needed to be dealt with. "So, well... Thank you." No, he's not great at the social thing, especially not with creatures he barely know.
The squirrel lifts his head in an attentive and somewhat proud manner as he is thanked for his deeds. Ah, so meddling in the affairs of cougars has paid off for Chk. "Aha! So you found the information useful, yes? Anytime, cougar, chkka-chk, anytime." A quick, quiet chuckle, accompanied by a twitchy flailing of a fluffy red tail.
Does the squirrel mean what he says, or is he just being polite? Well, in the interest of keeping things safe, both inside and outside of Amaranth, he says, "Should you happen to observe anything else that seems out of place... I would appreciate you letting me know." He has nothing he can offer this squirrel, not really. True, cougars do not generally bother with squirrels, as they are too small and difficult to catch... But there's no reason this squirrel couldn't invoke Kein's name, should Chk find himself in trouble from a cougar, and the safety he provides for the cougaresses of Amaranth also ensures Chk's safety, if to a slightly lesser degree. Perhaps the squirrel will consider that as being worth what Kein is asking of him.
Chk does not miss a beat, and promptly nods his tiny head in response to the high Chieftain's request. "Chk keeps eyes and ears open. Always. Yes." That sounds like an affirmative. He scales a foot or so of the tree trunk for no apparent reason before once again stopping, this time facing sideways rather than down. What would a squirrel have to gain, helping a cougar like this? Who knows. He's a mere squirrel, but perhaps he intends to move mountains. "Eyes and ears. Chk."
With Ama being his eyes and ears outside of Amaranth and this squirrel helping to be his eyes and ears inside of Amaranth... Yes, his cubs ought to be plenty safe. "Thank you, again. Chk." He emulates the squirrel's name as well as he can, and at least does not horribly mutilate it. As the squirrel is heading up the tree, though, Kein continues on his path, instead of waiting for a response. Things are getting better.
Chk sees the cougar continuing along his path, and continues his ascent up the pine tree. He follows along with Kein for a short distance, easily manipulating his way from tree to tree. After a minute or two, though, he randomly stops, his focus apparently turning to something else.
