Kein - Male Cougar
Nayeli - Female Cougar
- Deep Crevice -
The sun is beginning to set. Kein has been near the cave all day, just listening as his mate rested after giving birth to his second litter. It was only an hour ago that he finally left, and when he returns, it is with a large hare. With the food for his mate in his mouth, he pokes his head into the cave, prepared to leave it and get back out if she seems to want to be alone. There is still a part of him that is reserved about even being near this cave, but he has overcome that reasonably well.
A cool breeze that the evening brings is a blessing in disguise as it makes its way into the warm cave Nayeli rests in. The day has been long, at least it feels that way to the Amaranth Matron. However it's a familiar feeling, still very fresh and quite vividly imprinted on her mind caused by the first litter. Her body is curled on the dirt, with her back against a dirt wall. Her head is steady, though tired, as she looks down at the two daughters. The reborn spirits of Ohanzee and Maulisho, as prophesied by Paoro. "Look..." Her stare shifts from the cubs to Kein. "Look... They're... Beautiful." Her whispered tone is not only to avoid frightening them, but a sign of her exhaustion and fatigue. Of course she's hungry too, but Nayeli is too enthralled with her children to focus on anything else now.
Kein smiles softly as Nayeli points out her children. Their children. Dropping the hare, Kein moves to nuzzle against her gently, then says, "Of course they are." All of their children have been beautiful. Kein does not really attempt to pretend that there isn't something particularly spacial about these two, though. After speaking, he sits to watch as they remain curled up in sleep by their mother's side. They could not be more beautiful, and knowing... Well, what he knows about them... It is no wonder his mate is so taken by them.
Purring with the contact from her mate, she continues her gaze upon her daughters sleep. With a big, drawn-out, sigh, she drops her head and shoulders gently on the cool ground. "What are your names..." She mulls over names in her head, asking aloud for Kein's assistance. Her hunger remains ignored as her second litter feels just as magical as the first. Her eyes remain open, though other than that it appears as though she's asleep. "Hmmm..." They've been licked clean, fed, cooed to, licked again; everything except named.
Kein knows that one of these cubs is supposed to be his mother's spirit reincarnated, while the other is the unborn daughter of Ohanzee... But which is which? Looking over them for a moment, Kein finally moves to nuzzle against both of his daughters lightly. Then, as a breeze blows a branch out of the way, allowing just a little more sun into the cave, Kein spots more detail in the fur color of his new daughters... And, with another nuzzle to one of them, he whispers, "I want to name her after my mother. Maul." That's fitting, right?
"Of course... It's a great name." Nayeli pulls herself to a more aware state as she lifts her head up again and smiles down at the girlcub. "It even looks like her." Not too far off, anyway. It's beautiful. "And the other... It has to be just as a great name." She licks the other's head gently, not even disturbing its sleep. A moment passes as the land continues to darken outside. Nayeli's nose leads her to the hare Kein brought for her. She nuzzles Kein again. "My hero." She begins eating it, at a strenuous pace. It's clear she's grateful for the food. Without warning, the Matron stops eating and turns to the remaining unnamed cub. "I knew a songbird, named Anya. It was the most graceful sound I've ever heard when the bird said it... Anya."
Kein smiles as his mate actually eats something. If there is one thing he remembers from last time, it is that her increased appetite lasted long after the cubs were born, and he has every intention of making certain that she never wants for food. Meanwhile, the name she suggests... "Anya?" It's... Well, a bird's name, apparently. Hmm. "Do you remember, with our last litter... I suggested letting them have some say in their own names?" There were, of course, far too many for them to do that. Now, though, there are only two. "Maybe we can call her Anya... Until she is old enough to pick the name she wants."
Nayeli liked the idea of actually allowing cubs to name themselves or each other, but there simply too large of a number in the litter to have that work out without chaos. She leans back to the hare, continuing to satisfy her near-endless hunger. "That sounds interesting... Yes, I like that. I'm sure she will, too." She grins. By now, the hare is nearly complete, and Nayeli stops her self to rest her head on the ground. "Thank you, love." Another big breath exits through her nose as she returns to observing her second litter sleep.
"You're welcome." Kein's voice is soft as he keeps his head near his daughters for a moment. After a moment, he licks gently at his new children, then turns his gaze to his mate. Is her head back down because she is tired? "I'll be right outside if you need anything, Nayeli." In time, he may grow comfortable enough to sleep in here with them. For now, though, he is content to let her rest in here while he stands guard outside.
"Okay... Don't go too far, though... The cubs are hungry and so am I." Nayeli teases Kein with a weak laugh, satisfying her humor. The cubs stir, and stretch their limbs before retracting them and falling back asleep quickly. Newborns are amazing; their size, their noises, their basic needs. She can't help but be utterly fascinated by this litter. And knowing their spiritual saga, it makes them all the more amazing. The cool night air relaxes both Nayeli and her children, but she resists falling asleep as long as she can.
