Sweet Rain - Female Cougar
Kein - Male Cougar
- Eroded Well -
It has been several days since the cubs were born, and Kein has stuck largely to the area directly around the cave. Currently, though, he is taking a short walk, stretching his legs and spending some time just thinking. So far, his children have been very quiet, but even their soft mewling is enough to keep him up sometimes. After getting a drink from the well, Kein takes several steps back, then stretches his back slowly.
Using only Kein's silence as a means of judging his condition, Sweet Rain tries to start up a conversation. "Hello, sir." She's very well aware that Nayeli is very pregnant, if not already given birth again this season. All she can do is sincerely hope nothing is wrong. However, if something was, she doubts Kein would be anymore than one second away from Nayeli at any given time. Perhaps Kein simply didn't notice big Sweet Rain sitting along the edge. So a greeting is all she calls out, if she gets a response, good. Otherwise, she understands his stress and won't try to force him into a conversation.
Kein has absolutely no right to complain about exhaustion. After all, he is not the one that has to feed and clean and comfort the newborn cubs. He is tired, though. Whether he actually failed to notice Sweet-Rain or he was just really thirsty is anyone's guess, but as she speaks to him while he stretches, he says, "Good day, Sweet Rain." Kein turns his head as he yawns. After yawning, he sits, facing Sweet-Rain.
"Are you alright? You... didn't notice me. How's Nayeli?" Sweet Rain relaxes into a comfortable state, willing and rather yearning to hear what Kein has to say. On cool days like this, it never hurt to just take an afternoon off and talk. Though, she's never been much of a conversationalist to begin with. The tip of her tail twitches back and forth at her side as she yawns as well, a hint of tiredness on her as well.
"I'm just tired. Nayeli is too. She gave birth to our new cubs a few days ago." It's good news, and Kein's tone gives away that he views it as such. There is no complaining in his tone over the lack of sleep, and he even manages a slight smile. He would do anything for his children. Losing out on a few hours of sleep just because he heard some mewling that might have worried him is nothing compared to some of what he would do for them.
"There's the news I've been waiting to hear. Congratulations." With a big smile, Sweet Rain continues. "You /look/ tired. Anything I can do to help?" Granted, she isn't about to patrol the territory, but perhaps there's some favor in the back of his mind that she could help him carry out and get his mind off at least one thing. She lowers her head to a side and scratches behind her torn ear, carefully. Not that it's extrasensative or anything, she just doesn't want to accidentally cut any more of it. It's a touchy subject.
Kein shakes his head slowly, even though, immediately after doing so, he says, "You could help us pass along the news. You're the first to know." Only because she's the first one Kein has seen along his lessened travels, since Nayeli gave birth. He is not horribly concerned about patrolling his border, not like he has been. He has enough other animals helping him on that front that he can spend some time with his mate and newborn children without feeling guilt about doing so.
"Oh! Yes, I can do that, at the very least." Sweet Rain lifts her head again and nods, visually confirming Kein. She stands and leans forward again, drinking from the well. The mist and light rain made an odd, eyecatching effect on the well. Having spent much of her time here, she's long since known of it, and has spent entire storms watching it.
"Thank you." Surely, most of the members of Amaranth already know Nayeli was close to birthing the new cubs, but now they'll be able to know for certain that it has happened. And now that Kein has given his news, and had time to think... "How are things going with you, Sweet Rain?" He hasn't spoken with her very often recently. They've both been busy.
After a brief moment of pondering that herself, the cougaress looks back up at Kein and sits. "Well... First I want to know... That I'm really enjoying it. That said, it's frustrating, sir." She doesn't /sound/ too frustrated or displeased. "There are many things to remember, and I'm still giving it all I got. Qale mentioned that I'm learning quickly, and he doesn't seem like the dishonest type to me." Sweet Rain smiles and adds a bit more. "I feel... confident that I can help, if something goes wrong."
No doubt it /is/ frustrating. Should Kein have asked someone else? Chandani, perhaps? Sweet-Rain didn't have any preparation for what he asked her to do, to learn... And, recognizing that, he is more than patient. "Just do what you can. I know that you'll do your best." She always has, after all.
"Yes, sir. I'm not done yet." Not even close. Yet she still is ready to take it all on, never even doubting herself or Qale for a moment. "Your newborns... How many? What are their names?" If she's going to share the news with her Sisters, she wants to at least have more to tell them so the entire Tribe isn't in suspense.
"Two girls. Maul and... Well, we're calling her Anya, for now." Kein's answer is brief, and he keeps his eyes on Sweet-Rain. Sweet-Rain did know his mother for a short while, didn't she? Kein was too young to remember the day Sweet-Rain, then Nium, visted her, but... Regardless, he would not be surprised if his choice of a name for one of his daughters were to cause some surprise.
"Those are nice names." Sweet Rain will not ask why they're only calling a daughter a name for a temporary time. She does remember Maulisho and young Kein rather well, so Maul as a name comes as no shock. Honoring the life of one who fell to an untimely death is very noble. "Two daughters. I understand." She thinks on it, then repeats herself. "Congratulations. I'm glad to hear the news." Why exactly isn't Kein with Nayeli now, anyway? Hunting food for her? This isn't exactly prime location.
Kein never stays away for long. And, as the conversation seems to be drawing to a close, he says, "I should be returning now, but you and others are welcome to visit us. Especially my children, shoudl you happen to spot them." It is far from being a command to report to their parents, but Kein /would/ like to see his sons and Aurora.
Sweet-Rain stands up, out of respect as his chieftan hints to her that it's time to leave. "Yes, sir. I'm sure I could find where those cubs are hiding." She tilts her head with a knowing shrug, having a decent clue about their whereabouts, at least for most of them. "I'm going to stay here for the remainder of the day. Well, at least until I wish to hunt." But she has a feeling Kein won't need her, at least not now.
Kein chuckles quietly. No doubt, even at their adolescent age, some of his children would be all too glad to lead Sweet Rain on a long game of hide and seek. He nods slightly as Sweet Rain says she'll be in the area for the remainder of the day, and says, "Thank you for everything." Yes, there is a chance that, without all of the other cougars, Kein would have less work. A smaller territory and fewer cougars to protect. But the efforts that those like Sweet Rain put in make up for a lot of it. After his thank you, he turns to head back to the east.
