Mythri, adolescent female cougar
Cael, adolescent male cougar
Scene:
She's almost back at the strange--yet beautiful!--rock formations where she spent her first night as a resident of the mountain. Does she consider herself an actual member of the Amaranth tribe? Not necessarily yet, but her 'resident' status is certainly better than having to trespass. Paws thudding softly against the ground as she runs, Mythri is thoroughly enjoying her early morning run. Instead of just the usual forest, she's been able to see a variety of terrain up here in her aerobic circuit. Certainly not nearly all that the mountain has to offer, by any means, but it's been a nice introduction, for sure. The female's tail streams behind her as she not-quite-sprints back toward the north, through this last area of pine needles and bright mushrooms.
And what is he doing on so fine a morning? Cael had spent most of the previous night baffling over the strange event between his father and this myterious female that has entered Amaranth. He learned a little bit about Kein's encounter with her, but even more surprising is that after all that uproar yesterday, he /still/ wants to find out what her name is. It's been bothering him quite a bit, but, he hasn't yet seen her. The male was going to venture north, higher into the mountain range to get away from it all, to think, but he hasn't yet left the lower land. He's in the grove of great pines, now, perched as high as the limbs will hold him in Kein and Nayeli's tree. At least, the one that he thinks it is. Settled there, body stretched out along a sturdy limb, backlegs tucked underneath him, one forepaw and his tail hanging lazily down. As he lounges, eyes half-lidded, his ears swivel as a noise catches his attention. Cael stirs, bringing himself out of that silent, brooding mood consistant to all teenagers and his gaze falls upon a figure below. He stirs again, blinking to focus his sight and his thoughts.
Does she notice the young observer up ahead? Up /above/? If so, there's zero indication as Mythri continues her run, gliding through the trees with a muted crunch-crunch-crunch of paws landing on dead pine needles. Oddly enough, she doesn't seem all that fatigued, and there's somewhat of an exhilarated smile on her maw as she runs. Cougars are sprinters, her father used to quote in an annoyed and mocking voice. Not for him, and certainly not for his daughter; endurance in running was something he had her training on at a very young age. And even now that she's effectively severed her ties with her father, Mythri doesn't see any reason to give up her early-morning routine. Not only is it great for exercise, it's immensely refreshing and offers a great and (usually) uninterrupted chance at deep thought.
Should he bother her? Cael's leans forward on his tree limb, careful not to lean /too/ far ahead, and peers down below as Mythri approaches at a steady pace, ears shifting on his head. If he wanted to get killed, he could most certianly drop down in front of her, but considering her quick temper with Kein that may not be wise. With a sigh he heaves himself to his paws and walks out a short distance, body swaying easily with the movement of the tree against his weight and in the wind. He twitches his whiskers, considering his best path of decent, eyes continually darting back to the fast approaching female. If he's not careful, he'll completely over run him. With a grunt, he moves down a few feet, body curling and curving as he makes his way down.
There's really no possible way she can miss seeing the other feline; yet still, there is no reaction whatsoever from Mythri. With well-practiced form, she continues running, and with obvious enthusiasm, she continues smiling. It's her own private tradition, and one that she plans on keeping until she's too old and weak to run any longer. Who knows? Perhaps the fact that she's been doing this for the duration of her life might mean that she'll be able to do it longer than other cougars her age. One can only wait and see. She's fairly close to Cael's ever-changing perch now as he descends; it won't be but a few seconds longer before the female passes by on her way to the stone formations.
She's either blind, or doing it on purpose. Cael pauses for just a moment, watching as Mythri runs directly past his tree and underneath his paws. He can hear her steady breathing she's so close, and confusion curls his features as she continues on her way... He is on the ground a moment later, four paws hitting the pine needles with a light thud, his tail slowly curling and uncurling as he debates whether or not to follow. But his paws start moving before he has made a decision, and he follows at a light trot toward the distant stones; it's easy enough to figure her destination, and even easier to follow that wafting trail of scent she left behind. He wrinkles his nose, curious, before picking up the pace just a bit.
There's no hesitation or slowing down at all as Mythri passes by, or even as her ears rotate slightly at the sound of the male landing behind her. Will he follow? Will he catch up with her? Her ears remain perked, but otherwise there's still no notice taken. Is she deliberately ignoring him? Or does she simply not care that he's there, and apparently trying to follow her now? Either way, the male is going to have to really pick up his speed if he wants to catch up to her, since her pace, if anything, is speeding up as she nears the conclusion of her morning run.
If she's heading to the rocks, she'll be there shortly. For a while, Cael is content to simply trot behind her, able to follow her easily even as she moves farther and farther away with each stride. She's making no attempt to hide herself, and it's likely that she doesn't know her way around Amaranth well enough to avoid him, or his family, for terribly long. After a moment of consideration, the male picks up his pace until his paws are druming quickly, evenly on the ground. Not quite hunting speed, but close. While he's not had the training Mythri had, the male has made an attempt to hone himself higher in the mountain where the air is thinner. He'll be able to run here for a bit, though... perhaps not as long as she. At one point, he issues a deep, resounding chuff; he doesn't want to scare her and end up with claws in his face.
A short while later...
Quite invigorating as always, Mythri's morning run has left her in a state of satisfaction--albeit hot and a little out of breath. The thinner air up here is going to take some getting used to, but given that her run wasn't quite the length that she's used to, it wasn't too exhausting. And with the scenery... yes, she can definitely get used to this. Jumping up on one of the flat rocks, Mythri begins a careful routine of stretching and grooming, making sure that she looks quite presentable for the rest of the day. She has a few tasks planned, foremost of which is to talk to that older male again. The mate of Matron Nayeli.
Kein's son continued to follow Mythri's trail through the trees, eventually slowing his steady, semi-lumbering pace as he reached the thinning tree line that opened up as the scattered rocky outcrops began to take over. His breathing is heavy. He's not a runner. His wandering through the northern mountain sharpened his footing and balance, but not his stamina. Still, not yet exhausted to the point of collapse, Cael picks his way through the rocks until the female is pinpointed. The adolescent alters his course slightly and closes the distance between them, blue eyes watching her with that stupid little stare before he chuffs. The noise if more for himself, but it alerts his presences and after a suitable pause, he gives this: "Hello, again." Cael's ears roll to the side. Wow. Lame.
He's /following/ her? Mythri never would have guessed! XD Pausing in one particularly long full-body stretch, the female adolescent rotates her head to look curiously over at the source of the chuff. "Greetings." She looks back to straight in front of her again, and a few seconds later, finishes her stretch, standing now straight and proud on top of the rock... and then turning to look once more at the other feline. Should she sit? Remain standing? Does she even want to remain here and no doubt be dragged into an awkward attempt at conversation? She /does/ have work to do, and none of it involves this boy. "Where is your father?" Mythri asks smoothly, tail slowly twitching behind her.
Cael blinks, trying very hard /not/ to stare, and when Mythri turns he greatfully releases a held breath and coughs politely. Her question has him a little surprised, though, and before he attempts any sort of coherant conversation on his own, he decides to answer it. "I don't know, but I suspect he's quite busy, at the moment." It is early, after all, and it's likely that he is hunting, either for himself or Nayeli, or patrolling the far borders. Cael pauses a moment, glancing back over his shoulder as if suspecting Kein to come waltzing in at any second... and then his full attention is back on Mythri. "But, I thought I'd welcome you to Amaranth, and apologize for my father's... terse behavior. It's been quite... hectic lately." Cael chooses his words carefully, not wanting to really delve into the /drama/ that is Amaranth. "And, since Kein has said that you may stay, I thought I might show you around." And then he blinks, curling his ears away from the front of fear they've blushed pink on the insides. "That is, if you're interested."
So. Now she has a name for the male leader. Kein. Storing that away for future reference, Mythri is, at first, silent, simply gazing back at the boy. Terse behavior? She can't really blame the adult for responding to her trespassing the way he did. That doesn't mean that she /liked/ being.. roughly treated.. but it's hardly anything she hasn't already experienced. Her father could be gentle when he chose to, but punishing her for lessons not learned fast enough was hardly ever /gentle/. Yes, Mythri is quite used to 'terse behavior'. But back to the question at paw. He wants to show her around--does he really think that she needs his assistance? She's /quite/ capable of looking around for herself, thank you very much. And yet, his insistence at being /with/ her is going to need to be addressed sooner or later. Might as well be now, and hopefully they will run into the boy's father before too much longer, and she can switch to a more private conversation with him.
... Why is she just staring at him? Cael's face slowly melts into what might best be described as berated confusion. It's as if he has just been lectured and slapped on the paw from running away from home, without the actual 'running away' part being involved. He stares back, eyes at first expectant and then hesitant and then down right wary. Is this what Kein was talking about? This complete and utter confusion that accompanies girls? He thought his sisters were bad enough, but a total stranger is even worse ._.; The male coughs lightly, disturbing the horrible silence and his eyes narrow and leer across his shoulder as a jay screams somewhere; stop /mocking/ him, okay?! It's then that he shrugs and turns from her, tail slowly waving behind him. "Well, um, okay. I don't think you'll see my father until quite a bit later in the day," he offers, paws hesitantly moving away, "I'll, um, be to the north. Up in the mountain if you, um, change your mind."
"I will be exploring the southern part of the mountain, if you wish to.. show me around," Mythri concedes in a voice that is light and yet somehow a tiny bit formal at the same time. "Son of Kein." With a brief flick of her tail, she jumps off her rock and lands gently on the ground, standing still, eyebrows raised fractionally as she looks over at the other adolescent. If he continues north and leaves her be, then that's perfectly fine with her. She's never complained about peace and quiet before, and doesn't plan on starting now! But if he changes his mind and decides to show her around.. then.. well.. she'll accept it. Mythri has endured a lot growing up; having a clumsy boy stumble his way through a guided tour shouldn't be too difficult. Besides, any day that's testing her patience rather than her survival skills is a good day!
He'd taken a step, and then another, and halfway through the third he stoped and glanced over his shoulder. While she might have expected his eyes to be bright and gleeful, Cael's features are quite toned down, contemplative almost, as he watches her decend from the rocks. His tail waves at her, considering something on its own, and he turns back until his shoulder is pointed in her direction. The male dips his head, a silent thank you for acknowledging his existance, but then delicately shakes it from side to side. "If you'd rather explore on your own, I'm not going to stop you. I just thought I'd offer." He laughs lightly, but doesn't explain. Maybe having someone of Amaranth with her this time would avoid any hazards later on. But the young male shrugs, and again bobs her head at her. "The southern face of the mountain is my favorite. It's quite secluded." Pause. "Good day, then," Cael offers her one last twitch of his muzzle, a smile, before beginning a search for something else; food, most likely.
She said that he could show her around if he wished, did she not? Perhaps he simply became too shy to go through with that, or for whatever other reason has seemingly declined. Regardless, Mythri is /quite/ sure that he'll show up later. Again and again. With the faintest nod of her head in his direction, the female adolescent begins heading south at a fairly brisk rate; the morning run provided as much energy as any hunt could have! She's curious to see what lies to the south beyond the pine grove where she first encountered the boy. There's a good bit more to the mountain to see and explore, and she can't wait to get started. Not as important as speaking to Kein, but it /was/ one of the items on her agenda for today. Will her own solo expedition be as profitable without a tour guide? There won't be anyone to point out the obvious--that is a rock, that is a tree, that is a bush--but she'll manage.
