Cael, adolescent male cougar
Kein, adult male cougar
Scene:
Oh. My. God. Cael was certainly glad to escape his parents, leaving them to do whatever it was parents do, alone in the pinegrove. What he doesn't know is that Naeyli has sent his father after him. At first, Cael wasn't quite sure where to go to be alone and hide from both parents and the wandering Mythri. She seems to be quite intent on following him, and the young male thinks it best to avoid all contact with all cougars until things, um, cool down. Past the stone formations, and the extreeme western edge of Amaranth, Cael lounges among the stones in thought. The evening is casting reds and oranges over his pelt, warming him and lulling him into a semi-slumber and helping his brain forget the previous afternoon.
Kein has not sought out Cael too quickly. He is no more pleased about this than Cael is. He does not make a habit of lying to his mate, though, and so he arrives eventually, having followed Cael's trail to here. Perhaps a more... relaxed... thing he could teach Cael would be how to hide his tracks a little better, as well as how to tell if he is being followed, but that's not exactly what Nayeli had in mind, when she told him he needed to continue this conversation, Kein is certain. He, for one, is not doing a great deal to go unnoticed. He does not want to startle the boy, after all.
Startle? Startle?! He's not startled?!?!? This place echos so, and approaching paws steps, though slow, jerk the boy from his thoughts and he sits up a little straighter than he had been. He still lays low against a large boulder, head resting against the warm stone as he warily shifts his gaze across his body to see... Kein. Blink. He'd have expected Mythri staring at him with that strange, wide-eyed... /girl/ stare she seems so keen on using on him. But still, the look that Kein gives him... His son sighs, grunting as he rolls forward on his stomach. "Hi, Dad," he offers, sounding... not quite thrilled but trying /really/ hard not to be rude about it. "Mom send you?" Yeah, he knows.
At least Cael doesn't make this any harder than it already will be. That's right. Blame Mom for this one. Kein nods his head, then stops advancing a sits, just close enough to Cael that he will not have to raise his voice to speak to his son. At least there is one positive to this. They didn't have any sons in this most recently litter. If girls require a talk similar to the one that, apparently, boys do, Nayeli is /definitely/ going to be the one to do it. "I know you don't want to talk about this." Neither does Kein. Really. "Part of becoming an adult is learning to do all the things you really just don't want to, though." Because, even if you can't find the motivation to do those things, your mate is always there to make sure you do them... Or so Kein adds, silently, to himself.
One thing that Cael needs to become a master at is fidgeting. Or, at least, a master in /not/ doing that. Until such time where he learns to hide his discomfort as well as Kein seems to do, Cael blinks rapidly and then turns his attention back toward the sunset and tries to settle into that position he was in before. "Yeah," he offers back, not in a rude or rebellious manner; just that, yeah. While his eyes are elsewhere, fascinated with the rays of the sun through the tree line in the distance, his ears are trained to his father. The son sighs gruffly, "It's not that I don't want to do anything about it," he offers. "That's just it. I want to do something about it, erm, her, but she-- Well, I thought she hated me, so I thought to leave her alone, then she follows me around and wants to 'trade' her kills with me, and then she follows me /again/ and goes after me when I tell her that she's disrespecting my mother and your lands." /Huff/.
Kein can't say that, as of right now, he approves of Mythri as a mate for his son at all. He keeps that well and truly to himself, though. What he does not keep to himself is this: "You could ask her what she wants. That doesn't mean she'd tell you. If she's anything like your mother, she will let you trip over every word you know while you try to find the exact thing to say." Is that really what Kein thinks Nayeli does? Sometimes it feels like it. A lot of times, it feels like it. Whether they actually do it /deliberately/... Well, Kein will probably never know.
"Well, I thought I did," Cael grumbles, more to himself that Kein. In fact, he has no reason to be upset with his father at all, since Nayeli was the one who put him up to it. When he's a little more confidant, one day, he'll ask his mother why she felt the need to torture her son in that manner. Regardless, the adolescent sighs again and leans back on his rock, closing his eyes against the setting sun (or maybe against further talks). Then a grin quivers his whiskers, and he glances at his dad through narrowed eyes, "I won't tell mom if you won't. We can pretend that's all you needed to say." HALO.
Oh, wouldn't that be nice. Unfortuntely, it is not that simple. Kein shakes his head slightly. "I might not like it, son, but your mother had a point. There /are/ some things you'll need to know... And probably sooner, rather than later. Not the least of those is that, if you ever hope to be happy, you and your future mate will have to respect one another, have to be able to trust one another." Lying, even about something so small, would be a complete betrayal of that respect and trust.
For the second time today, Cael chokes on his own air. "Mate?!" he nearly balks, staring a little wide-eyed at his father. Does he think Mythri will fill that role? Does he even /want/ her to do that? Cael blinks and slowly shakes his head, trying to force his brain to piece through that jumble mess of a thought. "I, um..." He laughs. "Wasn't on my mind, Dad. Gotta' tell you, wasn't planing on it." Kein's likely retort: when she hits you-know-what it doesn't matter what your plans are, boy. Harumph. Still, unable to relax now, he hoiks himself up into a rather tall sit and gives Kein his full attention. "Even if... If I had to trust her, she'd have to do something to earn that trust. It doesn't seem like she wants to. Should I give her that opportunity?"
"Future mate!" Very future, hopefully, but Kein doesn't count on it. He also makes absolutely no mention of Mythri's name, not specifically. How can he possibly tell Cael to trust Mythri when Kein isn't even sure if he trusts Mythri, himself. "It might not be on your mind now, but I promise you, there will come a day when you will be able to think of nothing else. When that day comes, it will be much better for you if you have already started establishing that trust. If you both know what you want and what you're willing to do, so you can act appropriately. Whether you chose to give any one cougaress that opportunity, though... I wish I could tell you what to do, in that regard. I really do." But he can't. Nothing he could do could keep Cael away from someone he wanted to be with, and he knows that.
Cael cringes a little at Kein's insistance. Yes, yes, /future/ mate, sure. But he... still didn't really answer the question about what role Mythri has to play in that, if any. Still, Cael hadn't really considered her as a /mate/; he was just trying to be friendly and look where it got him, the 'talk' ._.; The idea that one day he won't be able to think about anything else but a mate... Aw, crap, he's fidgeting again. Sigh. "That's fine, Dad, really. I'll, um, figure it out." Yet another attempt from the son to end the conversation, or at least, change it a little. If Kein moved to offering advise about how to talk with Mythri /now/, not, you know, when she's evenmore interesting that he already finds her *coughhackcough* Cael my be a little more interested in what he has to say/ Right now, though, he's contemplating another escape attempt.
The problem with that is, after finding that Mythri had found his mate and children, likely before Nayeli was ready for it, and then started talking about her father, all in front of Cael... Kein just really isn't sure he /wants/ his son to be getting to know the girl better. Still, Kein accepts the attempt at redirection now, at least sort of. "You know... If you ever have a question, you can ask me or your mother." Does he /want/ to be asked relationship-things? Not really. But he supposes he has to be here to answer them as well as he can.
"Yeah, yeah, of course." Does Cael really want to ask any questions? No, not really. Particularly not now. Besides, any... 'feeling' he had before has all but drowned in embaressment since Nayeli sent her envoy to come find him. He turns from his father a little bit, hoping that it's all said and done. He doesn't mean to be rude, but, it's really something he'd rather not continue to have to deal with. At least, not right now. If the conversation happened in a slightly less awkward way for Cael he might be more open to the idea, but if word leaks out to /any/ of his siblings he is going to start pounding in some faces. "But," he adds after a while, "if there's any trouble from all this, I'll take responsibility." Mythri did, after all, follow him straight to Nayeli.
Trouble? Provided that she is not rude, Kein doubts he will even be raising his voice. He /is/ going to have a talk with Mythri, though, no matter what Cael says. Cael's not in the clear yet, though. "Just... Your mother and I would really appreciate it if you would speak to us before doing... Anything. Okay?" The last thing Kein wants is for Cael to come to him one day soon just to tell him that Mythri, or anyone else, is pregnant. He would not mind grandchildren someday, but he would prefer for it to be after his children are already well-settled in whatever territory they inhabit at the time.
While Kein was thinking of causing trouble with Mythri in the 'boy-girl' sense, Cael... slightly misunderstands his meaning. The boy's ears flatten briefly before perking up and forward, and Cael looks away from Kein and back out over the mountain. He wouldn't attack Mythri like he went after Ashen (not unless she thoroughly deserved it, of course, but even then he's not sure he would), but he nods all the same thinking that he understands Kein's meaning. "Of course." He's not going to /knowingly/ disobey his father, but Cael is pretty sure that Kein knows a bit more than he's letting on. A lot more. The skin between his shoulders twitches as he remembers how /dumbfounded/ he feels when she shows up, and he grunts, trying to forget.
Kein wonders if Nayeli would accept everything that was said as enough, at least for now. Well, he /did/ talk to Cael, and he /did/ continue the conversation, so... "All right. I'll let you be, now." No, Cael will not have to retreat again. Rather, Kein will be doing that. Will he go immediately back to Nayeli, or try to search out Mythri? About that, he's not so certain, yet.
