Maul- Female Cougar Cub
Kasim- Male Cougar
Maul is a careful child. She never gets out of sight of the cave, not really. She is quite focused on the hopper bug in front of her, though. She loves these things! Mostly, she loves imitating their movements. How great would it be to walk like this all the time? Hop. Hop. *Big* hop, to place her in front of the hopper, so it doesn't continue to hop away from the cave. Then the process starts all over again.
Things seem to be going rather well as of late it would seem. Definitly a change from all drama that had been going on, but Kasim will be the last one to complain about that. Even though he still feels a little off from his usual self, he can't deny taht he's been feeling a bit better. Plus, with the news of Kein and Nayeli's second litter finally coming, what isn't there to be happy about?! The getting-old male is now on his way to the den, feeling he should at least say hello to his son and offer his congratulations. Maybe even say hello to the cubs if they happen to be awake.
Daddy is no where to be seen, as is often the case, and Mommy is in the cave, but Maul is making her presence known quite well. She stops in her tracks as the hopper makes an interesting noise in response to her getting too close. Immediately, she attempts to mimic the chirping noise just as she was mimicing its movement. She doesn't succeed in sounding very much like it, but she does succeed in scaring it off. "Hey! Come back!" Aww.
Kasim's ears flick up at the sound of what appears to be some sort of chirping noise and then a voice. More specificly, it sounds like a cub voice. Ohh so one of them is up after all! Smiling to himself, the cougar soon enters into the clearing around the den, quickly spotting the stray cub only a few yards away from him and, judging by the tiny incect hopping by him, it must have been chasing the bug for fun. "Well hey there," he says, smiling down at the cub.
Maul watches as the hopper bug leaves. She can't help but pout just abit, but then something else comes into her line of sight. She slowly lifts her head to look at the large male. Her first instinct is to bolt for the cave. Her parents have taught her much in her nearly one month of her life. Her father, especially, likes to stress that they should not trust any stranger unless Mommy or Daddy is nearby to introduce them. Something makes her stop, though, and she tilts her head as she looks at Kasim. There is a mix of confusion and curiosity in her expression, and she doesn't speak right away.
He's actually a bit surprised that the cub didn't run away or cry out for her mother, something he was sure it would do. Instead, it's just /staring/ up at him with it's big cubby eyes. It's cute but also a bit odd. Still, there's something about the cub that just seems familiar but he can't quite place his paw on it. Maybe it's just him. "You're a quiet one, aren't you?" he says, relaxing back onto his haunches. "What's your name, little one?"
There are times when Mommy can't get her to shut up. Quiet? Not so much. Still, she doesn't respond immediately. Rather, she tilts her head the other way, and then, after a few more moments and an apparent conclusion reached, she sits. "I'm Maul!" She knows her name! Immediately after speaking, though, she settles down even more, and repeats herself. "I'm *Maul*." After the second time she speaks, she scans over his expression with her eyes.
Instantly, Kasim knows why he thought he recognized something about the cub. Aside from the spotted fur and the eyes, the cub does look very similar his former mate. The realization sends surprise and shock all throughout his body, his smile fading away as he looks over the cub. "Maul..." he murmurs softly, closing his eyes and imagining in his mind. As he opens his eyes, he can almost see Maulisho's face on the cub in front of him before he shakes his head to get himself back to reality. "Hi Maul it's, erm, nice to meet you."
Maul tilts her head again, narrowing her eyes as she does so. She doesn't like being confused. She has started to get used to it, but that doesn't mean she likes it. Yes, they just met, but... They didn't just meet. And, once again, the temptation to bolt for the cave presents itself. "You know me, but you don't know *me*. You don't have to pretend." She's not the same. She's different, in so very many ways. Amaranth's different, occasionally difficult, odd little cub.
Kasim has to shake his head a bit to get himself focused again. All this time that Maulisho has been gone from him, he's never let himself forget about her. The sudden mention that this cub is named Maul just kinda... overwhelmed him for a second. "Oh, right sorry," he says, quickly gathering himself back together. "My name's Kasim. I'm your m- grandfather." Phew, caught himself in time.
Maul shakes her head. Not all adults confuse her. She loves her Mommy very much. Kein and Kasim, though... "Kasim. Nice t'meet you, Kasim." Polite. Nice. Pretending. Mimicing, just as she was with the hopper bug, earlier. The little cub forces a smile that doesn't really penetrate her eyes. Pretending time. Playtime. Playtime means happy. Hence, smile.
Since he's been around for quite some time, however, it isn't hard for Kasim to spot the phony smile being given to him. After all, it takes a bit before you can fool someone like that. Chuckling a bit, the older cougar lowers himself down onto his stomach, getting a bit more at Maul's level before saying, "Maul you don't need to give me a fake smile, we're family. Is something wrong?"
Maul's smile fades when he talks more, quite seriously. If only she were older, and actually had the words to describe her feelings. If only she weren't so confused all the time. Growing up is *hard*. As soon as the smile is gone, though, it returns, every bit as fake. "We're playing. Don't you want to play?" He's the one who started it, and Maul can't help but feel like she is stuck in a game and doesn't know the rules.
Yes, growing up is indeed hard. Don't need to tell Kasim that. Sometimes he finds himself missing those days where he could ask other if they wanted to play. Still, he'll never pass up a request from someone else, especially someone from his own family. "Of course I want to play," he says, smiling back at her even though he can still tell it's fake. "What do you want to play?"
But... They're already playing. Aren't they? Maul tilts her head again. After only a brief moment, she takes a deep breath. Okay. She can't figure this out, so she'll start fresh. "I can't go. Mommy's sleeping." Otherwise, they could play something else than pretend. There's not a whole lot else they can play right here, though. "We can play another time." Maul has no idea how she must confuse others, really.
Kasim blinks a little bit in confusion, clearly not understanding what the cub is telling him. She wants to play then she tells him she doesn't want to. Maybe there was just a misunderstanding somewhere. "Maul what are you talking about? We can play right here!" he says enthusiastically to her, smiling wide over at her. Perhaps she just needs a little encouragement? Trying to get her to actually give him a genuine smile, the larger cougar uses one of his forepaws to try and gently push her over. He's playful too! Honest!
Maul is not a very competitive child. She doesn't fight against being toppled, and though her giggle is a little forced, it's more genuine than her previous smile. This still feels like a kind of pretending, but it is one she is much more accustomed to. She bats at the much larger paw, remaining on her back as she does so. Is playing with adult boys the same as playing with adult girls? Daddy really doesn't play, so it's hard to know.
"Haha, I've got you now!" Kasim says with a chuckle behind his words, smiling down at the cub. He'll have to wait until Maul has grown more before he can show her more things and ideas to play with, but this seems to be doing the job for now. At least he got a responce from her. As the cub swats at his paw, Kasim will occasionally use it to wrestle with her a bit, but never enough to actually hurt her or anything.
Apparently she plays well enough, as Kasim seems to enjoy playing back. Maul never wrestles for long, though. She hasn't yet reached the point when her endurance is endless. She's just a baby. After a little while, she rolls onto her feet, and says, "Fun!" That's what she always tells her sister when they finish playing. It's her equivalent of, "I enjoyed playing with you."
Kasim takes the hint from Maul and withdraws his paw away from her, but still smiling the whole time. "I had fun too Maul," he replies back to her then, after a moment of thought, crawls forward a bit and gives her a lick on the head. Hey they're family, right? Hopefully she knows what the term 'grandpfather' means by now. If not, maybe it will just take an introduction from Nayeli to get the message across. Who knows? Maybe it just takes time.
Maul doesn't move away from the licking, and when she smiles at him, there is real humor in it. At least this first encounter isn't ending on a bad not, even if most of it was more confusing that the end. Looking to the cave, she says, "I gotta go now. Bye!" That's all, before she begins in the direction. Her little legs are tired, and she's hungry. These things are not very conductive to good manners.
