Nanook - Male Dog.
Wanageeska - Male Wolf
Location: Foggy Path, Ute Land.
----
Wanageeska had not moved much since encountering the strange mixbreed pup he sent home, his orders being clear. His alpha had sent him here from a far off territory unknown in these parts to find someone, and still had yet to find any signs of their existence in this place. He sat still among the trees, hidden in the fog and listening for anyone or anything that might be coming his way. For all he knew, humans may be here too, as they were once common in his homelands. He breathed, curling his tail about, almost as still as any statue. He would stay here as long as was needed before he found what he was looking for, regardless of how long that was.
From the forested area in the north, Nanook prances rather blissfully about the area, tongue lolled out of his mouth as his sides heave heavy with breath as usual. This is the season where he curses his arctic heritage. The poor male is far too hot in his own skin, and it is only in this cooled down, foggy path that he finally believes that he can find relief. Having travelled from the northeast, it would make sense then to assume that he was on his way to the river shortly to the west. A swim, a drink, /anything/ to get him out of this heat. Though, other than his heavy breath, the male seems rightfully happy. It's only when he stumbles a bit /too/ far into the path that he tenses a litle, drawing his tongue in and trying to control his breath. The scent of wolf is fresh here.. though the two species are but cousins, a fear brought on from puphood that hasn't quite subsided kicks in, and Nanook's pace slows significantly.
Wanageeska's long ears twitched. Heavy breath, what a sign. Something was heading his way, and quickly until it suddenly slowed. Did it know of his presence? Wan hadn't masked his scent in a day, and soon he would have to again to maintain stealth. Slowly, Wan moved behind the trees, his eyes watching for the slightest motion in the mists. Until his search was over, he had to commandeer this stretch of land even if it did belong to another pack. Alpha principles took over, no matter how the pack might feel about this. He was in control so long as it served his mission. Anyone whom disagreed would be dealt with in a manner appropriate to the situation.
Having just reached adulthood, Nanook isn't quite so privy as to the matters of surviving. Really, the young male has been lucky in his life. The journey to this expanse of land took him quite a while, but the encounters with greater predators could be counted with a paw. Nervousness overtakes the mixed breed, and once again, he attempts to hush his breath. His time with Allegro, his own pack leader, has been minimal.. but he knows that the older male wouldn't appreciate him getting hurt while wandering off from the pack lands. His own triangular ears perk this way and that, his white paws carrying him along the path slowly and carefully, until he thought he caught a glimpse of movement behind a patch of trees. Stopping abrubtly, Nanook's tail curls inward out of sheer instinct, and he is frozen, blue eyes peering into that patch in search of the form responsible.
Wanageeska knew that there was a possibility that he might be seen. While there was fog, it wasn't the ultra-thick fog he was used to navigating and the terrain was not stealth friendly in the day time. Still, he had the advantage, and slowly Wan peered around a tree, his white eyes staring at the dog partly covered by the mist. "Hold you ground," he said, "Remain as you are, and no harm will come to you." Orders. And he was no member of the pack belonging to this land. Bold.
Wanageeska emerged in full sight from behind the trees, his eyes never leaving the one before him. His ears were stiff, tail up but he didn't immeditately lunge or charge as many wolves may have. Even back home there was still a stigma about dogs, and often they were not too welcome unless they proved themselves. "These lands are not familiar to me, dog," he said. "Nor are they mine, but you wander...no?"
Lunge or not, Nanook was still frightened of the other canid. Not nearly as much as he used to be, but just the sight of this wolf was enough to make him shiver a bit. With the obvious dominant language of the other's body, the mixed breed responded by lowering his head just a bit, and taking one step back. "Yes.. I'm.. I'm not from around here." He said, his voice low, but still having a youthful tone to it. "I'm not familiar with the area either. I was just.. on a walk. First time I've ever been here, actually." He says this with a bit of a chuckle, and sighs. "Go figure.."
Wanageeska paced from side to side on the path, his tail no longer up, but swishing as if to cover his tracks. What wolf would? Wan would. He didn't care what the other may think. Pacing this way in front of another was a common way to say, bodily, that he was on control. "Then you've traveled more territory of this region than I have," said Wan, straight to the point. "I'm looking for someone, a wolf. Has a symbol like the one painted on my shoulder."
Ah, so this one was without a sense of humor? Great. This of course was just a mental thought that the dog had, though he couldn't help but keep a nervous grin on his face. At the moment, that and knowing that the wolf was just looking for someone were his only comforts. Wanting to sit down but again keeping in mind the strict rules that wolves had when regarding one another, he refrained. "A symbol?" He asked, and caught a glimpse of the sun that was, indeed, painted on the other's shoulder. "Hmm.." he says thoughtfully, admiring the little icon for a minute before he immediately snapped back to reality. "I've actually not been down this far into the forest in a long time.. and I'm sorry, but I don't know any of the wolves around here, either."
Wanageeska stopped, eyeing the dog again, his tail once more raised. He had the advantage here and found no fault in the dog's words, but also felt he should not let the dog feel at a discomfort. "You are wise to remain cautious in body, dog," he said. "I'll not punish you for sitting as you wish. There is no reason." And...Wan sat, still staring at the dog as if it might have been a sin to take his eyes elsewhere. Partially, it was protocol. A nervous dog could be a dangerous one. "What are the names of the packs in this land?"
Wanageeska's ears stood straight at the mention of the name 'Ute'. That was the pack he was looking for, specifically its Alpha...Helaku. There was no need to keep this dog around any longer. "You have given me the information I seek," he said. "My search is over. You may go as you wish." How quickly was that over, Wan stood on fours though his eyes never left the dog.
"That's it?" he asked, or rather blurted out. Catching himself afterward, Nanook stood back up slowly, making sure that he kept himself in the submissive positions with his ears just slightly back and everything. "Thanks.." he said sincerely, but quietly, and came to a slow trot as he began a brisk jog away from both the wolf, and the entire area. This part of the forest was a bit too adventurous for him. Back to the dog's packlands it was.
Wanageeska watched as the dog left. What a skiddish creature, not too willing to stay around for long. Success--he had not needed to use his own name to these unknown creatures yet. That was reserved for Helaku, and the talked-about Skelaghe. Yes, he knew the name. Helaku had been adamant about her being a former pack member of his. Wan turned, finally, and disappeared into the dog, awaiting the next victim--er passerby.
