Two-River Fork
___
The river and waterfall motions intersect here, a graceful sight off in the short distance. The rumble of the falls is discernible, as is the glint of the waters. The grounds in between the slope and rivers here are damp and sponge-like; they are covered in full reeds, cattails and small puddle-like ponds. Frogs and toads are in abundance, as are some smaller marsh birds. It dries soon, though, and moves out to catch the sides of the water-forms on the outer edges of the soggy grounds.
___
Characters:
Gitchiwaakwe, wolf pup, daughter of Viridian
Rockfall, wolf pup, son of Viridian
Locusts may be smaller than frogs, but that only makes them harder to catch ... they're smaller and blend in with the grasses, so are harder to see and they can actually hop-fly farther than a frog! With this challenge in mind, Rockfall is hot on the hunt. As soon as he gets near, the locus hops into the air and noisily snaps its wings. Rockfall has little trouble keeping pace, but the locus flutters a good foot or two above him, and his pounces just always seem to miss by >_< THAT much!
Gitchiwaakwe yawns and climbs out of the den, her head fur mussed and eyes barely open. She sits at the entrance to the den, scratching her right ear. Upon noticing her brother, she watches intently, sleepiness forgotten. "How long you been practising?"
Rockfall snorts, now feeling he *has* to win, knowing his sister is watching. He jumps higher ... only to tumble harder after missing yet again! He snorts. "Don't feel like eating a locust anyway!" he snorts and scampers back to his sister. "I've been up and practicing for hours, sleepyhead!"
Gitchiwaakwe yawns again, stretching and flopping onto her stomach. "When did Mum and Dad leave? I didn't wake up when they left..." She yawns again, apparently ready for a nap, even though she just woke up.
"That's 'cuz you're so lazy, sleepyhead!" Rockfall can't help but snidely rub in. "They left when the first streaks of sun rose over the horizon," he pouts. "They're always so ... busy." Forgetting his chiding battery he'd just done moments before, he gets serious. "I think something is up. Something big is happening. None of the adults are telling what, though."
Gitchiwaakwe tilts her head, growling softly. "I was awake all night! Kept having nightmares about big huge moose trying to step on me.." She glances in the direction of where the adults usually patrol at this time of day and nods solemnly. "I think you're right.. But what do you think it is?"
Rockfall shakes his head. "I don't know ... but all the adults are acting strange. So ... quiet. Very little of their usual chat about tracking prey, glorious stories of hunts or the like. I don't know what's going on ... I've never known the adults to be so ... quiet ... and sullen."
Gitchiwaakwe frowns and nods slowly in agreement. "Maybe another pack is trying to take our territory, or big prey are getting scarce.. What else could make the adults so gloomy?" she wonders aloud. Looking around, Gitchi sighs and shakes her head. "Maybe its not something us pups would -want- to know about..." She whines softly, murmuring, "Maybe its something really -bad-, Rocky."
Rockfall looks to Gitchi. "If its something that big, its something that will affect even us. I ... want to know. At least ... I think I want to. I don't know, maybe you're right, maybe they're right ... maybe its best they don't tell us."
Gitchiwaakwe shrugs and looks towards the borders of Viridian Pack's territory, seeming nervous. "What's going to happen to all of us if it -is- that bad? Do you think we'd have to leave, or would the adults be able to fight whatever it is off?" She growls a little louder, frustrated. "I wish I was a grown-up! Then I'd know stuff."
Rockfall sits. "I don't know. Maybe the pack will have to split up ... I'm sure mom and dad would take us with them if that happened." He lopes after his sister, nuzzling her shoulder. "I'm scared a bit, Gitchi, because they are ... but ... maybe we should try not to act scared, even if we are. Whatever is going on ... I don't want our parents or the pack to worry too much over us. They need to do ... whatever it is they need to do."
Gitchiwaakwe shivers and nods firmly, her eyes still a little fearful, but her jaw set, as if she's preparing herself for the worst possible outcome of a situation. "You're right, Rocky. You're almost always right." She offers a weak grin. "You're gonna make a good Alpha someday.. Can I be your Beta?"
Rockfall chuckles. "Whatever the adults are doing now, I don't think I want to be alpha of. I mean ... sometimes it seems fun and cool, ruling everything ... but what if I had to do something, for the pack's sake, that would make everyone in the pack mad or sad? I don't think I'd like to do that."
Gitchiwaakwe nods and blinks, pondering. "Well, I still think you would make a really great Alpha. Maybe not of this pack, maybe you'll have your own. Besides, whatever the adults are dealing with now won't be around when we grow up... I hope." she shudders, nuzzling her brother's ears, seeking comfort.
Rockfall turns at the nuzzling and licks at his sister's nose. "I don't know. Have a lot to learn by then," he smiles.
Gitchiwaakwe smiles, leaning into the lick. "Maybe I'll be a huntress by then.. I -know- I can hunt, I just need bigger, faster, stronger practice critters." Gitchi blinks, watching the butterfly. "Ooo.. Pretty."
Rockfall chuckles. "Have you seen our other brothers or sisters?" he asks.
