Characters: Gypsy (Female Raven), Alsoomse (Female Dog), Rafe (Male Dog), Allegro (Male Dog)
Setting: Cherry Orchard
The wheels of genius ideas have been turning in Allegro's head for a while now. He's been frequently away from the tree grove ... which is both a pro and con. Although able to keep his eyes and ears open to pick up news from beyond the line of the forest trees, being away means that he's not keeping a close eye on who comes and goes into the tree grove, and there have been many scents that have been left behind. Perhaps this is why as the young dog emerges from the grasslands, his expression looks flat. Brows lowered and ears laid back, he drops his head to the ground and sniffs about as he returns to the familiar densite.
Rafe is resting next to a sleeping Surii. He wasn't very happy with the arrangements she is living in, since the one he charged with her care obviously let him down. Hearing the sound of someone, he pushes up looking around noticing the unknown. The retriever steps protectively in front of the sleeping lab mix, "Hello?" he calls out.
Alsoomse is settled near the den with the pups sleeping within it. Her ears flick forward at the movement, and then lifts her head a voice is heard. She snuffles a bit while eyeing Rafe a few moments. "Who are you?.." Is questioned with a thin tone. Well she can't recall this dog before.
Sleeping? Who's sleeping on a beautiful day like this? Oblivious to the fact that someone around here might be trying to get some rest, Gypsy flutters onto the scene, singing her heart out -- or... well, one would -assume- that this is what she's trying to do. Her voice isn't particularly melodic, and though beautiful to her own ears, probably sounds like something between a toad and a cougar coughing up a particularly nasty hairball to anyone else. As she drifts down to land amongst the branches overhead, she looks down with bright eyes, noticing the dogs, and that some of them seem to be napping. She stops singing, but tilts her head curiously and clicks her beak. "Ooop! Lazy dogs! Still sleeping at this time of day? Tsk!"
Allegro's eyes alight upon Rafe swiftly. It'd be rather difficult to not notice a strange dog in a group of so few. He lifts his head as he regards him, eyes drifting to the sleeping female he stands before. "Howdy," he answers as he saunters forward at a casual pace, inclining his head to Alsoomse. He grins faintly but soon returns his attention to the stranger. Though seemingly at ease, there's a slight rigidness in the way he holds his tail, and it remains even as his head tilts up at the sudden voice from overhead. Not everyday that birds decide to speak up! "With all that hollerin' you're doin', they ain't gonna be sleepin' for long," he replies, eyeing Rafe again now.
The retriever looks towards Alsoome, then this unknown male. "I am Rafe. I'm here watching over my daughter." Moving sideways he glances to the sleeping form of Surii. Purposely ignoring the raven for now, "Who might you both be?" Keeping his gaze going between them he finally allows his gaze to fall upon the female that seems to carry herself a bit better in stature according to his standards anyway.
Alsoomse lifts her head up towards the bird eyeing it thinly before she looks towards Rafe not liking some strange male in the area around her pups. A faint huff escapes her while she shifts up onto her haunches, ears flicking forward. "Your Surii's father?" This questioned after a moment. "I'm Alsoomse."
Gypsy gives a little chuckle at Allegro's response, wings fluttering as she hops from branch to branch overhead restlessly. "Good!" She responds simply. When the other dogs regard her with mild annoyance (or not at all, as the case may be), she hops lower, looking about as mirthful as a raven can. "I'm Gypsy!" She chimes herself into the conversation, fully aware that she wasn't invited and most likely isn't welcome at all. Her hopping takes her to the lower branches of the tree, and she resumes her horrible singing for a moment -- though not as loud as before. Annoying, but quiet enough for a heavy sleeper to slumber through.
"Daughter?" Allegro blinks towards Surii, and his brows slightly raise. "Oh...you're the one she been lookin' for. I'm Allegro," he introduces with a mild dip of his head. " ... Figure she's sure happy to be seein' you. She was ready to run off and hunt ya down y'self not long ago," he remarks with a flick of an ear. That ear flick might be due to that singing, who knows, but his eyes do drift towards the newly-named raven. A raven that he seems surprisingly tolerant of ... for now anyway. "Ain't know birds had names. You all got names like that?"
Rafe settles to his haunches, "I was told about your pups. As you see I am a safe distance." he says towards the female lightly cocking his head as she either dozes off or goes into thought. Turning his attention towards the other male, "Indeed I am the one she sought after. Though really I came across her by accident. So she is now in your care? Allegro?" he repeats the name lightly.
The dog's question is successful in getting Gypsy to stop singing again, and she gives her head a tilt as she considers the question. "Hah! We do, most of us, I think." She replies. "All the ones I know, anyway!" Not that she's a flock-bird, to be honest she doesn't really know many other avians on a named basis. But still. The bird goes quiet for a moment as Rafe speaks, and, having nothing to add just then, turns to preening some of her wing feathers instead.
His care. Allegro turns an ear at the phrase and he clears his throat slightly. "Yeah, s'pose she is. .. At least, she's stayin' with me. Us," he corrects as he nods towards Alsoomse as well. He smiles lightly, the look crooked and friendly. "And I'm hopin' you'll think've stayin' too. You actually done saved me a lot've time. Had been plannin' on findin' ya myself a long time ago when I first heard how much she wanted ya with her. And I know she wouldn' really be happy bein' here knowin' that you're out there somewhere." A slow exhale, and a smirk follows. "So, how 'bout it?" he asks, not one to beat around the bush. "And you, Gypsy. Got a question for ya. You fly 'round the forest lately?"
Rafe looks towards his sleeping daughter. After a moment he nods, "I think I shall take you up on it. She is all I have left and I am tired of roaming."
Gypsy stops preening at the question, blinking a couple of times before giving a confirmatory nod. "Just today!" She replies. "Met a very friendly fox, in fact." She adds, as if this made the claim more valid. "Why do you ask?" She questions in turn, being a curious creature by nature.
"She'll be real happy t’hear that, Rafe, jus' like I am." Allegro does indeed seem pleased that the male has agreed so easily, and his tail is given a few flicks of appreciation. "For now, this is what we got, but dependin' on what lil' Miss Gypsy here says, that might be changin' real soon." He turns his full attention to the raven now, head tilted up. "I got a lil' problem. This place is gettin' real crowded real quick, and I got this dog that's been buttin' in where he ain't wanted. I've been sniffin' around the woods, lookin' to relocate, but I don't want to come face to face with no wolf or cougar. Word is, the wolf pack that lived there done moved on, an' the cougars that was all over the place scattered out too. You got eyes in the sky and can see more than I do. You seen any cougars or wolves?"
Gypsy puffs herself up rather importantly, realizing the implications of what he's asking. All the same, she takes another moment to think about this, not wanting to give a hasty answer. "Saw -one- wolf. All by 'imself. But that was a few days ago. I've been through the woods a few times since then, and haven't seen 'im again. Haven't seen any cougars, nope." She shuffles along the branch she's perched upon, giving a soft cackle. "Not that I've been -lookin'- for 'em... though, I could." The last part seems tacked on more as an afterthought than an offer, but the raven is quick to take note of a potential opportunity to benefit herself in this. Dogs hunt, right? This could be a nice arrangement, if they feel like compensating her. Her beady black eyes watch Allegro expectantly as she awaits his response.
One wolf, no cougars. The odds are sounding good for the little split pack, and Allegro glances to the side towards Rafe and Surii, then back towards the slumbering Alsoomse who, as always, has positioned herself in front of the den. "I don't reckon you had much reason to be lookin' for'm," he continues as his bi-colored eyes return towards the avian. "But, figure I give ya a reason. Once we head out, things can change. Wolves can come back. Cougars could too. Someone like you could be real helpful to a dog like me, but I reckon y'd want somethin' for all that flyin' and spyin'. I would, if it were me."
Gypsy considers herself a humble enough creature, but she's a scavenger too, and will take almost any opportunity that comes along so conveniently. Besides, what -fun- to be given a mission! "Flyin' and spyin' -does- work up an appetite." She replies slyly, eyes twinkling. "But I'm not a picky eater, and what's a mouthful for you is a good meal for me."
Allegro bobs his head once. "Figured it might. Now, I'm a lot've things, but a liar ain't one've 'em. You got my word that as long as you stick around with us and help out, then you'll get what we get." He grins a bit, and steps backwards a few paces. "And you get tired've it, then you go. I ain't no tyrant, neither." Pretty laid back for a ... sort of leader, isn't he? "We got a deal?"
Sounds like a mighty good deal to Gypsy. She bobs her head in an affirmative and straightens herself up, business-like. "Deal!" She agrees. Why not, right? She's got nothing to lose, except time... which she wastes enough of without the benefit of having meals caught for her. She gives a few more restless hops. "Might as well start now... still plenty of light!" She says with a glance up at the sky. "I'll be back. Good hunting to ya, Allegro!" And with a flutter of black feathers, the corvid flies off through the blossom-laden branches and out of sight.
