================================
The peace of the creekside sits well with Siwa, even if it does mean that the spirit voices are easier to hear. The voices that live in the water are always especially rambunctous owing to the nature of their medium, but even so Siwa has managed to slip into a relaxed doze. She has perched herself atop a long, flat rock whose sloped edge disappears into the water. Sunlight warms her skin and she sighs contentedly and re-adjusts her position.
Rowtag had been gone only briefly in order to find something, anything, to eat. Without any luck at all. The young male wasn't any good at hunting just yet, with nothing but primative instincts to somewhat guide him through the process. But with no detailed lessons on the proper position, how to keep quiet, how to stalk.. the poor thing had returned with not a scrap. Not even a mouse as he had previously caught. His hunger was growing, and it had begun to stress him out a bit. Hence, why when he saw Siwa on the rock that he'd been laying on.. /his/ spot, his ears flatten and he lets out a low growl toward the female, but makes no effort to even intrude on the spot. Knowing her, she'd just make fun of him some more, and that was the last thing he needed. This area was far too close to the Ute lands anyway, judging by the closeness to the lawn, that belonged to his mother. Perhaps it was time for him to make /real/ good his escape?
She opens both eyes at once at the sound of a growl and lifts her head, which has lost all thoughts of sleep. When her gaze falls on Rowtag, Siwa blinks and then frowns. Just the sight of him is enough to stir up her irritation from the previous day. What is his problem?! Staying silent for a while, Siwa can't decide whether she wants to say anything or not. Talking to Rowtag is kind of like talking to a rock - and she'd probably enjoy the rock's conversation more. She bites down on her tongue, however, and simply gives him a fierce glare.
Obviously seeing the glare, Rowtag mirrors her expression, baring his teeth just a little. "What're you glaring at /me/ for? I didn't do anything to you." He said lowly, the volume of the rumble in his throat increasing slightly. Oh, he was usually quite tempermental, but with no food in his belly and the realization that no one had come looking for him yet, he was pretty upset, just in general. Resting his rear end on the soft grass, his stomach makes a loud rumbling sound once more, as if activated by there being another wolf around. With a blink, his aggressive look fades, and it turns into a distant look into the grass, batting at some of the blades with his paws.
Wondering if he's serious with that question - afterall, he growled at her first! - Siwa merely rolls her eyes and lets out a long sigh. She truly has no intention of answering the other youth, having said her piece to him during their meeting the previous day. Obviously he has not taken any of her advice to heart, as evidenced by his rumbling stomach. She looks back at him at the sound, and in spite of herself she feels a tug of pity once again. Boys are so... dumb. With a grumble under her breath about her own stupidity, Siwa pushes herself to her paws and starts to approach Rowtag -- slowly. "I guess you're still hungry. Don't know why you're so bent on not eating the food at the den."
Rowtag's attention remains fixated on the green blades, much of his aggressiveness lost due to his hunger. He simply doesn't have the energy to be the "tough guy" anymore. Really, he wants to just go home, but is too afraid of what the others would do to him for hurting Ciqala the way that he did, and the way he treated both Abel and Wanageeska. The fear there is mostly of Abel, since he didn't seem to find anything wrong with violently disciplining him, and his shoulder was still a tad sore. Not that he was complaining. Batting one particular blade of grass back and forth peacefully, he notices Siwa's approach, and glares over at her, but doesn't growl or show his teeth. In fact, the only bit of aggression shown is his ears folding backward. Turning his eyes back to the grass, he planted his paw on the ground, and shrugged. "I'm not that hungry. I had something earlier." He mutters this, and it is a blatant, obvious lie. "I don't /want/ to go back to the den, that's why."
Quidel has arrived.
Again Siwa rolls her eyes, but it's done without the anger this time, just pure exasperation. "Don't you go telling tales to me, you scamp," Siwa scolds him in a quiet but stern tone of voice. Coming as close as she dares, she plomps decidedly onto her haunches. "There's stumps with more sense than you for hanging onto your pride so." She's definitely got the impression that he won't tell her what his problem with the pack is, and she's not so sure she cares either, but it upsets her to know he's hungry. With reluctance she offers, "If you want, I can show you a bit about the way I hunt. I ain't going to fetch you anything, but I'll help you get it for yourself." Sure, she could've offered to just go get him something from the den, but the idea of such subservience rankles.
Rowtag's yellow eyes glare at Siwa once more, but he just looks away without even bothering to scoff or anything. He was oddly silent and almost civil.. quite concerning, honestly. Taking in a deep breath, Rowtag rolled his eyes in an exaggerated manner, a groan accompanying. "I don't need your help. If I get hungry, I'll get something." His tone snarky, he pulled himself away from the girl with a fluid motion, and stood back up to walk over to the river, his front paws sinking into the soft soil and his head lowering to the water to get a cool, fresh drink. The water helped.. but what he really needed, was a good sized meal.
Toyo has arrived.
And here comes Quidel, at a time he hadn't really meant to, but he's coming nonetheless, following the creek. Ears are up and eyes are wide and pointedly staring at the forest around him. Patrolling, one might say. He's got no destination in mind, but he is being watchful, for intruders, for food... for pups! His eyes fall on the two youngsters at the water's edge, making him slow down and raise an eyebrow. What are they doing way out here? "Hello," he says simply, though he is smiling. "Siwa and Rowtag... not the ones I thought I'd see out here.
As her offer is spurned, Siwa can't say she's surprised. She's glad she tried, but all the same does he have to be SO rude about it? This boy is just /unbearable/. She sends a glare after him as Rowtag moves toward the water, and it doesn't take long at all for her idea to take shape. It just so happens that Quidel's arrival provides the perfect distraction. "Hello, Quidel," Siwa calls, hoping this will make Rowtag look in the adult's direction - and away from Siwa. Without warning, the girl is running toward the other youth, and at just a certain moment she lowers her head and takes aim to headbutt him right into the shallow water.
From the corners of his eyes, Rowtag sees Quidel approaching, but doesn't say anything to greet him. Why would he? It wasn't like the pup was happy to see him. He hardly knew the older male, and in fact, was rather upset that more people were arriving where he was. Pinning his hears back and furrowing his brows, Rowtag lapped up the water slowly, but loudly. So loudly in fact, that he didn't hear Siwa running toward him, and with a bit of a yelp, he tripped over his front legs and fell into the water, on his stomach. Growling loudly, he turned himself around and charged out of the water, his teeth fully bared and snapping at Siwa, wanting to grab a hold of that stupid head of hers and ripping a chunk of fur off just like he'd done to Ciqala's neck ruff. Either way, he was /not/ happy, and was all for violence now.
The singing wolf may be patrolling, but he hasn't been alone. A small, tawny shadow has been tagging along in his wake, creeping from tuft of grass to cluster of brush. While still hesitant around most, Toyo can't help it - he's getting more and more curious about this new life of his and those involved, and that means one thing... explore. Or, in his chase, stalk. While he doesn't outright approach, the small cougar isn't far behind Quidel, and he slowly peeks out of the shrubbery, blue-gold eyes squinting at the noise of squabbling pups.
"Um. Oh dear," Quidel says with widening eyes as the scene unfolds around him. But when he can see Rowtag suddenly getting hostile, he charges forward ahead of Toyo, darting forward to try and snag the male by the scruff before he can do something rash. "Hold it there!" he barks in as sharp and commanding a voice as possible, puffing his fur out as he uses all the sleekness of his form to get between them. Or pull them apart.
For all her enthusiasm, Siwa doesn't know much about fighting technique and the weeks she spent near starvation before coming to Ute have taken their toll on her strength. Nevertheless, she is a vexing opponent since she was raised to be quick and alert, and is as expert at evasion as a pup her age can be. How else could she have eluded an entire pack when they were trying to kill her? Siwa dances away from Rowtag's first lunge and braces her paws, ready to do the same to his second. Her expression is determined, betraying neither distress nor anger. She doesn't even snarl or bare her teeth, since those silly displays waste valuable seconds that are better spent dodging attacks. Should Quidel manage to get hold of Rowtag, Siwa will back off, but should the adult's reaching jaws miss then Siwa will be ready. Toyo, in the bushes as he is, goes unnoticed for now.
His fur was drenched, his stomach was rumbling, and he was /furious/ now. Continuing to snarl at Siwa, his attention was focused on her, until he heard the bark from Quidel. Snapping his head in that direction, his fury was now directed towards the odd, singing wolf, hackles bristling up like needles along his spine. His claws dug roughly into the earth, holding himself firmly in place, but he was ready to lunge at whoever deserved it first. He hadn't grabbed Siwa, and there was no need for him to be held by the scruff.. yet. Glancing at Siwa through the corners of his eyes, his growl deepened, tail held stiff and horizontal behind him.
Slow, carefully placed steps carry Toyo from the sanctuary of the brush and into view, though it's not towards Quidel that he's been following but towards Siwa. His black ears are pinned back, eyes wide and pupils shrunk as he looks past her and towards the raging Rowtag. "...wha's goin on?" He murmurs quietly as he comes close to Siwa, the black tip of his tail jerking sharply side to side.
Quidel skids to a halt between the two pups, standing tall and glaring down at Rowtag. He doesn't seem impressed. He has seen much worse than an angry juvenile before, after all! "Don't do something stupid, boy," Quidel says with a tone that would brook no argument. "Your impetuous nature has caused enough trouble. Don't let your anger cloud your judgment further." He doesn't move an inch, staring him down. He may be Skelaghe's son, but he's not going to just let him run around like... well, like this. "What has been happening here?" he asks nobody in particular. "*Besides* the obvious. Being pushed into some stream water is no reason to act like a crazed beast."
Siwa stands behind Quidel now, and she takes a few careful strides backward away from Rowtag at which point she almost trips over Toyo. She glances over at the cougar cub and nudges his shoulder with her muzzle in a reassuring way. "Nothing," she mutters in his ear. "Master Rowtag over there just needed a bath." Siwa raises her voice then to answer Quidel simply. "Rowtag and I were talking. I offered to help him with something and he was quite rude, so I dumped him in the crick."
"I was not rude!" He growls over at Siwa, and glares at the cougar cub as well. There's no reason warranting the glare toward the feline, except that he didn't know him, and thus, didn't like him. "I just said that I didn't want her help." Trying to calm himself down, the wolfdog takes a few steps away from Quidel, walking backwards so that he could make a break for it. This area wasn't far enough away from the pack, and his father's scent wasn't even here. Why he was dawdling, he wouldn't ever really find out, but, he knew that he had to get out of here. With his ears flattened once again, he took a few more paces backwards, and turned sharply, in order to spring off toward the northwest.
Toyo wrinkles up the bridge of his nose, whiskers drawing back as one can just make out an airy sort of hiss that comes with an exhale. He gives a cross look back to Rowtag, if only because he's being glowered at, but the cat dismisses it as he turns to give Siwa's shoulder a firm rub of his cheek. "No fun." He murmurs before he turns his gaze towards Quidel and the fleeing Rowtag, ears pricking up as though waiting expectantly for something to happen.
"You didn't have to push him like that," Quidel reprimands Siwa over his shoulder. "It was hardly becoming of a young female." The rustle of undergrowth makes him spin back around to see Rowtag hurrying off. Hold on... why was he going that way? That wasn't the way back home... "Wait. Wait!" he barks, hoping to make him stop. That's not good at all, is it? But so surprised is he by this sudden, rash behavior that he can only stand there and shake his head. Time to put his nose to the air and follow him, he supposes. "Where does he think he's heading off to?"
"No, it's not," Siwa agrees with Toyo, sighing as she watches Rowtag depart. Her anger has deflated now, leaving little but a vaguely dissatisfied feeling behind. Blegh. She hoped that things with Rowtag would go better this time, that he would stop being so proud, but now it seems that things have only gotten worse. She flicks an ear toward Quidel at his scolding, though her eyes don't leave Rowtag's retreating form, and after a moment she says, quite frankly, "I know I didn't have to. I wanted to. And someone probably should've done it to him a long time ago." After that, she turns and offers Toyo a smile. "Giving silly pups baths in the crick's made me clear famished. I'm off back to the den. Want to come?"
Toyo gives just a little sort of a snicker at Siwa's mention of her personal preference to punish. Hey, he had siblings, he remembers those sort of feelings - despite their sad ending. But hey, these wolves aren't so bad. At least they're entertaining. Mention of food brings a loud growl from the cat's stomach as he perks up, eyes gleaming hopefully. "Long as I don' need a bath to eat!" He chimes before he swings a playful swat in the direction of Siwa before calling out, "Race ya!" Not that she wouln't likely beat him. A cat can move fast over a short distance, but it pales to a wolf's long distance.
Quidel looks up at the sky, suddenly stuck for a solution. So Siwa was going back to den, Rowtag was running away, and he was here in between wondering what to do. Was Rowtag actually leaving, or was this a common sort of thing? He looks back at the youngsters, figuring they're fine as long as they're going back home. But that boy... "This isn't what I meant when I asked for something to do..." he mutters darkly to the sky. "I'll see you two back at the... den." Well, there Toyo goes. He stands up and begins going in Rowtag's direction. Hopefully he can get the trail nailed down and then go get help.
