Fallen Log
Shag - Male Wolf (Viridian)
Alaqua - Female Wolf (Viridian)
-------------
It's evening, a time that Shag happens to enjoy. The starry-backed male is dead set on trying to develop whatever it is that he's had for most of his life, though it seems to be taking a toll on him. He's in a state of extreme focus, lying on his stomach, head bowed towards the ground and ears twitching back and forth without pause. He's breathing steadily, but heavily, paws twitching, muscles tight... until he lets it all out with a gasp, dropping his chin to the ground and panting, eyes wide like he's been holding his breath instead of concentrating on something far away.
"Shaggy, what are you doing?" Alaqua asks with a confused tone as she sidles up next to the star covered wolf, sliding down next to his side with a heavy 'thud' of her frame. Leaning in, she pushes her face up against his neck happily, followed by a lick to the brim of his ear. "You're always doing weird stuff when I'm not around." She says with a cheeky grin as her tail wags back and forth behind her. With a light nip to his scruff, she rolls to her side in a happy doggy like manner, giving her back a good scratch as she works herself against the ground. "Everything OK?"
"It's not weird," Shag counters with a shake of his head, still breathing as he huddles against the ground, and then leans into Alaqua, breathing to keep his pulse steady. "I was... I was training. I think," he whispers, closing his eyes. "I... I don't really know. I was... confused," he says cryptically. "I'm sorry. I'm... I'm just tired right now. Ever since... that dream..." he trails off, looking away, almost ashamed. After what happened afterward, how could he possibly still remember it? But he does.
"How do you not know if you're training or not? Squishing yourself into the ground, and holding your breath doesn't seem to be training to me." Alaqua says as she wraps her paws upwards around his neck, then pulls him down to smoosh his face into her chest. Giving him a lick along the bridge of his muzzle, she softly woofs to him. "You're still thinking about that dream?" She says, tilting her muzzle with a bit of a frown. ".. Oh sweetie.. you shouldn't let those things get to you. I have bad dreams all the time too, but I don't let them weigh too heavily on me. I just know that I wake up next to you, and everything seems right once more."
"It's... not really... what it looks like," Shag says. "Something new has happened. But I don't know what to make of it, honestly." He sighs heavily and buries his face into her chest-fur, glad to have someone to cuddle with after a stressful day like this one. But he keeps speaking, his voice muffled. "I... can't help it," he says quietly. "I don't know what it was supposed to mean, but... but I... everything seems so jumbled right now."
Gently stroking a paw along the top of his head, Alaqua gently nuzzles him, then leans her head uncomfortably upwards to press her nose against his. "I just wish I could understand you. You unnerve me when you get like this.. it's spooky." She admits as she softly rumbles in her throat. "Just have confidence in yourself, Shaggy. If you believe in destiny so much, then know that it will guide you well, and true. No dream, no amount of worrying, will change it. Your life may end by tonight, a tree could fall on you. You could be bit by a snake, or maybe you live until you're old and your teeth fall out." She says softly, ears falling backwards. "My only advice is to not dwell on the What If, but focus on the here and now. Focus on me... the pack you lead.."
"Winter is coming," Shag whispers into her fur, trying to do as she says. But he can't quite do it just yet... he seems to be in a state of anxiety greater than most anything before. "It's coming, and I can already feel the cold. It's... not a good kind of cold," he whispers. "I don't think it'll be a good winter to us. We need to make our move and get settled before it arrives. I need to go..." he whispers, and then shakes his head, wrapping his paws around her as well. "I'm sorry, Alaqua. I know I'm... strange. But I love you. You know? I'm already feeling better."
"I just wish I didn't feel so useless though.." Alaqua admits as her ears falter back against her skull some, gently stroking her paw slowly along his thick furry scruff, trying to comfort her mate. "The winter will be fine. We'll be fine.. Shaggy, sweetheart.. have faith. Please." She practically pleads with him as she sighs gently, staring into his eyes. She looks nervous, and a tad more than worried. ".. You're scaring me." She whispers quietly.
Shag stares back at her, and closes his eyes for several moments. When he opens them again, they're much closer to what Alaqua wants them to be. Brighter, more lively, and more focused on his love. "I have faith," he whispers. "We are still being guided well. We came together, after all, didn't we?" He licks her over the snout. "Don't be scared, Alaqua. I'm sorry. I was just... overcome for a moment. Our future... I know as long as you are in it, everything will be fine."
