Starlight is enjoying herself with a nice refreshing gallop out in the lowlands. Though she appears as if she is tired, this does not seem to slow her as she gallops and leaps over any obstacles in the meadow, long black mane and tail flowing behind her damp chestnut form.
Of course, Lootah is here in the lowlands as well, though not galloping as he wished he would be. No, instead, he is continuing to stock up on the grasses, bulking up a bit for the incoming winter before the grasses begin to die off, enjoying the crisp juicy flavors while they last, before they wind up crunchy and tasteless. The very thought of dried up grass results in a grimace, though the stallion lifts his head at the sound of hoofbeats not to far off. Seeing who it was, the male's white hooves soon picked up, carrying him over to the pregnant female gracefully.
Starlight is too busy to have seen Lootah yet. It's only as she stumbles while galloping that the mare comes to a stop, sides heaving as she breathes heavily. Her chestnut flank is dampened, and she lets her head droop to rest some.
Seeing Starlight so tired out is rather concerning to Lootah, as she is carrying his foal, and he doesn't want any harm to befall her, even if it's just exhaustion from running. Quickening his pace, the painted male canters over to her, his head and tail carried proudly as usual. "Starlight," He calls out, and breaks out into a short gallop to catch up with her, grinning. "Exhausted, are we?" He asks coyly, and reaches his nose out to breathe against her neck.
Takala is hard to miss. Her dark body is like a stain -- an inkblot against the waves of undulating golden-yellow grass. She has caught wind of the herd and has decided to follow its smell, as she's anxious to once again be in the presence of a group. She was foolish and immature to have left the one she was born in, and the past few weeks have been an eye-opener for the young mare. Takala begins to trot as she comes within range of the herd, her pace light, her hoof beats playful and practically ringing with relief.
Starlight smiles and turns to nose at Lootah's neck, still breathing heavily. She chuckles. "Yes, but I have just been galloping." she says, and she whuffs against his neck before leaning onto him. She really is quite tired...perhaps she shouldn't run so hard for so long. She doesn't see Takala, being rather distracted while she huffs air, trying to recover her breath.
"Maybe you shouldn't be galloping so much, hmm?" He says, concern in his tone as he glances down to her belly briefly, but then brushes his cheek against her neck. Just as he was about to ask more questions about exactly why Starlight was galloping all over the place, the scent of something on the wind caught his attention once again, and his ears tilt forward, nostrils flaring. There had been two rogue stallions intruding on the land at once not long ago, and though the smell wasn't as clearly musky as a stallion, he was still cautious. However, seeing the outline of the form coming toward them, it's obviously female, and he perks right up, flicking his tail and tossing his head in greeting.
Takala lifts her head so as to get a better look at the scene she's walking towards. It appears that she's been spotted, as well. She watches the stallion acknowledge her and responds with a friendly nicker. Her ears are tipped forward with curious intent, eyes a little wide and worried-looking. It's the mare's reaction Takala is anxious for. Though, she's still far enough that she can flee if she's not welcome.
Starlight hmms. "Maybe not...I do get tired more easily now." she says, and she continues to lean on her mate. She sees him toss his head and she lifts her own, breathing easier now, though she is still weary. She whickers out at the unfamiliar mare in greeting, a tone that invites Takala to come nearer.
"Hello, hello," Lootah greets kindly, keeping his tone smooth and rather quiet to keep from disturbing Starlight too much. He's well aware that she's tired out, and if he had his way, she would go and get a few minutes of quiet rest. Though, as the lead mare, it was her responsibility to see to the new mares as well. He was merely a bystander with her around. A grin forms, and he looks over Takala briefly. "What brings you out here, hmm? Here to stay, I hope."
The welcome she receives from both mare and stallion are more than Takala had originally hoped for. Both seem friendly and encouraging. Her body appears to relax a little as she walks up to the pair. "Hi," she says, bending her smooth black muzzle towards the mare's own in order to share a greeting. She then lifts her head and looks at the stallion. "I'm Takala, and I do hope to stay," she admits, looking around them. "This area seems very nice."
Since he knows that the place of leadership is with Starlight, he doesn't immediately try to take over in the welcoming process of the new mare. Though of course he's more than happy that another female has found their budding herd, he doesn't want to upset the pregnant mare in any way. Another small smile is given, a tail flick, and he remains quiet, looking to Starlight instead to see how she will react to his sudden.. silent approach. Lately, his outgoing cockiness hadn't done well to impress anyone. Learning from that lesson, the stallion decided to keep his mouth shut.
"Thank you," Takala says to the mare, her youthful face beaming with appreciation. She stands beside the mare and stallion for a moment or two, but is too interested in her new home to resist taking a look around. She steps away from Starlight and Lootah and then breaks into a canter, making wide circles with her head dipping low to the earth and her tail held high. She stops every couple of yards to look around with ears alert, feeling excited and tired and relieved all at the same time. She gallops out to one of the lonely trees, circles it, and makes her way back towards the mare and stallion. Sensing Starlight's fatigue, she's careful to slow to a walk as she approaches again.
Starlight leans heavily onto Lootah, her head resting on his back. "I...probably shouldn't run like that again..." she says softly to her mate. "Welcome, as well...may I ask your name?" she inquires to the other mare, weariness evident but a smile present.
The scent of other horses on the wind is what's guided Nukpana in this direction. She'd been headed quite a different way when the scent had reached her, but she changed course without much thought. Other horses is exactly what she's been looking for. Trotting along easily, she slows to a walk and then stops while she's still some distance away, eyeing each of them carefully with an alert expression. She doesn't bother to whinny, for unless they're not paying any attention at all to their surroundings her red and black hide isn't hard to pick out. And there she simply stops and stares, waiting to see what they'll do.
Again, just as he's about to give into the slight temptation to perhaps groom a bit of Starlight's mane, or otherwise calm her, something else captured his attention. The figure of yet /another/ mare in the distance, though this one certainly didn't seem as calm or as eager to meet them as the other one who'd arrived only minutes before. Clearing his throat, he stands up a bit straighter, and stares back at the black pelted mare with a curious look in his eyes. "Hello.." He calls out, perhaps a bit put off by how very alert she seemed.
The young black mare slows to a halt near Starlight and Lootah. Her tail slapping against her flank, Takala grazes quietly for a few minutes before lifting her head and trotting in another small circle. She's tired -- and trying very hard to fight it. Her ears flick at the sound of Lootah's voice as he says hello. To whom he is speaking, she doesn't know, but is eager to find out. With head lifted high, she trots along and searches the landscape with her eyes at the same time, until she spots the figure of another mare. Takala's obviously new herself and wants to appear friendly, but refrains from saying anything just yet. Instead, she takes a step forward and remains there with ears bent forward.
Starlight looks at the newest mare as well, and she almost looks exasperated. She wants new herd members, but she'd also like to rest with her mate. She whinnies out at the newest arrival, and then yawns widely.
Though the stallion is the first to greet her, Nukpana doesn't pay any more attention to him than it takes to snort dismissively in his direction. She doesn't care about him. Instead, her attention turns towards the two mares, because that's what she does care about. Them and the scents of others in the area: a herd. Nodding to herself, she returns the whinny with one of her own; a friendly whinny that's quite at odds with her reserved approach. Stepping lightly, she walks forwards, intent on getting herself within easy talking distance before she'll start any sort of a conversation, but she takes her time about it, giving herself time to learn what she can about these three based solely on sight and scent.
By now, Lootah has come into contact with plenty of dismissive mares, and regards this one much as he did the other ones; with a roll of his eyes and a scoff of his own. Scraping his hoof against the ground in a sort of warning, the stallion's deep brown eyes narrow at the newest mare, but he soon nudges at Starlight, and pulls away. Obviously, the mares had business to attend to that didn't require his presence, and he had others to check up on. With two other stallions wandering about the area, he had plenty to worry about now. White hooves carried him away with no words, but a friendly nod towards Takala as he let out a snort, and began to trot off.
Takala glances over her shoulder at the yawning Starlight, then takes a few steps towards the new mare. Her tail swishes easily behind her and her head swings back and forth with each step, though she's careful not to move with too much confidence. She stops when she's in talking range. "Hi," she greets with a smile and a tilt of her head. "My name's Takala."
Starlight turns to both newer mares, and she smiles, though she only takes a few steps forward. She yawns again. "I am Starlight...leader of the Dorado herd."
Slowing to a stop when she's close enough that they can talk easily, but still far enough away that she may appear to be a bit standoffish, Nupana nods her head as they both introduce themselves. "My name is Nukpana," she replies in her deep alto voice, eyes shifting from one mare to the other, then to the surroundings, and back again. Clearly she's a cautious creature, though she does seem to relax a bit now that she's close to the others and her head inclines in slight deference towards Starlight. But her reaction is quite the opposite towards Takala, which she regards with a slightly superior air.
Takala appears to accept the mare's superior attitude, and is more interested in making another friend. She switches her weight from one foreleg to the other. "I got here not long before you did, so I'm afraid I'm not much of a welcoming committee," she admits, "but it's good to meet you."
However superior Nukpana feels, Starlight is superior here, and she regards the mare thoughtfully. "I assume you come here seeking a place to stay, as many mares have so far." The lead mare's ears flick, and she shakes her head to wake herself some, before she lifts and proudly arches it.
Good to meet her? Interesting thought, that. But Nukpana's attention stays mostly on Starlight. "I am," she answers, "I'm hoping to avoid too much trouble this winter. I'll have a foal in the beginning of spring, who would be better off with a home." The way she says it, so matter-of-factly, might seem a bit strange for a mother to be, but things of that nature just don't bring any sort of strong emotion to this mare. Indeed she is a little strange.
Takala is swiftly beginning to realize that, while this may be her new home, things are not like they were growing up. Strangers are not always friendly, ready to play with you and groom you. They are, well... strangers. Friendships take time when you're not born into them. She conjures up a quick memory of her family band, the one she foolishly left, and she wonders briefly if they are missing her or if they've already moved on. As for the present, Takala merely watches and listens.
Starlight's ears flick. "You mean to say you are carrying right now?" she asks Nukpana, and she hmms. "I have my own foal due in the late part of summer..." Her tail flicks. "You can, of course, remain here." she says, nodding to Takala as well.
It had occured to Nukpana in her search for a herd that she may come across one who wouldn't like that she was already pregnant, particularily the herd stallion. And so when she finds that it's at least not the case with this herd's lead mare, her first small smile reaches the surface. With Starlight's approval, she sees no reason not to stay, given that she's already decided that she'll be able to deal with that stud who wandered away. "Yes, should be born in about six moons," she says, finally seeming to warm up some, "And since I am welcome, I will stay." The thought pleases her greatly, for though she hasn't been in the area for long, it seems to be a nice enough place.
Starlight smiles, and she yawns. "Well, you are quite welcome to stay...but I'm afraid I've worn myself off and must find some rest. You're welcome to sleep wherever you wish."
Nodding her head one last time, Nukpana says, "Have a good rest then." As for herself, she plans on finding a good place to graze and not leaving it until she's stuffed. With too much travel and not enough rest for many days she could use the time to take care of herself, and with the safety that comes in a herd she now has the luxury of doing just that.
