Smooth Plateau
-------
Bluestem would be stalking across the plateau in a foul looking mood. His tail was bristling, his nose scratched, and there seemed to be a good grumbling string of half-heard curses that even coyotes might cock an ear at! Looks like he's been a scrap of some kind or another, huffing before pausing in a shallow depression of the short plateau grass to rest. "Last time I get into a politics argument with a badger." He huffs, quite unmindful of his surroundings!
The plateau never seemed like a good place for Camila and her sister to settle, but they hadn't had much luck in finding any rabbit warrens, or other places where small prey were excessively abundant. The older of the siblings had begun to question whether or not she was being too picky about their settlement here, but for now, here was a nice place to rest. It was a good place to rest and to sun-bathe, with autumn already beginning and the cold winds nipping at the southern coyotes. Although her winter coat had already begun to grow in, she still felt herself cold, not used to winds that would be considered on the cold side of mild to most. For now, Camila wishes only to rest, but of course something prevents her from that. With Sierra asleep somewhere nearby, Camila has taken on the protective role once again, and the grumbling of something triggers a growl of her own, gold eyes searching around for the culprit of the noise.
Of the northern climates himself, the male wasn't quite so uncomfortable. Yes, the wind had a good bite to it, but he hunkered into the grassy depression, peering crosseyed at his red-smeared nose. It was all he could smell, the blood, and as he dabbed a paw at it he had to stifle a still quite audible yelp! Hmph, if only it was cold enough for snow around here! Still, something caught 'Stem's attention, a sound carried even over the goodly wind. Frowning, he perked up onto his rump, peering over the short grass with a wary expression, glancing about to see where and who might have been the source. Then again, he had a sneaking suspicion it was his own stomach.
Only a few more moments of searching around led Camila to both the scent and sight of the other coyote. Her eyes widened, her ears tucked back, and her lips curled, baring her teeth that had been deprived of ripping at any form of flesh for a while. Though, she knew it was another coyote. With how she and her sister had been treated by their own kind in the past however, she wasn't so apt to accept another 'yote so soon. Her growl increased in volume and in ferocity, more than likely willing to chase the male off, but probably not so likely to go ahead and attack him. The smell of blood was in the air, and though she had a bad attitude.. she wasn't necessarily that much of a fiend. Not a word was said yet, though. Not until she was ready to chase him out, and for now, she was merely trying to scare him off.
Bluestem of course found the source of the growling quick enough! His eyes blinked, his ears perked, and he seemed almost too surprised to be fearful! It takes him a good few moments to respond, slowly rising to all four paws and taking a step back. "Now now, sister 'yote, I didn't mean to trespass! If you have pups about, I'm certainly not after them or poaching any grouse." He does look a mess how he is, but not quite scrawny or mangy...just a yote who seems to be having quite a bad day! "I only came up here for a rest! You've got a nasty bit of a...wolverine living not too far from here." Hey, it sounds better than being beaten up by a badger, and even in the face of her growls he sits, defiant.
Seeing the face of the male coyote doesn't do much to calm her. If anything, it adds fuel to the fire. She remembers the alpha of their small pack, and his voice sounds similar.. though only because of her own thoughts and getting this one and the tyrant, Basilio, confused. Referring to her as a 'sister' catches her a bit off guard, and her head pulls inward a bit in a display of confusion. "Who are you?" She asks in her low alto voice, growl only making her sound a bit more.. unstable. Noting the scratches on his nose and the warning that he gave, she calms a bit, and takes in a deep breath. "This place is large enough for the three of us. Rest if you need, but come too close to my sister and I, and I'll make the rest of your body match that nose of yours."
The male watches her, never moving, not even a twitch of his ear...until he does something rather silly. He sticks out his tongue. "Oh no, I'm not telling you my name, not until you put your hackles down. If you want to talk, we'll have a civilized conversation. After all, we are not wolves." And again, he sticks out his tongue, tail relaxed and curled around his sitting posture. "I will tell you I didn't come up here to hurt any fellow coyotes. Perhaps bully a rabbit or two, but not coyotes. I didn't even smell you." He again paws at his nose, and with a stiffled wince regrets it immediately.
The coyotess continues to growl at him, and shakes her head and the rest of her pelt roughly before her jaws part and she snaps at him from where she is, as another form of warning. With her ears tucked back, she glares at him still, taking a step forward. /No one/ was supposed to talk to her that way! Even if he was a male, and was bigger and probably older than her, Camila wasn't.. used to being denied her demands. "Why do you act as if we're part of the same.. family or something?" She questions, her growl eventually fading away, more curious as to the intent of the other coyote than interested in chasing him off.
Bluestem had to hold back a light smile. He had been hoping she would be curious, it's a well known trait of most 'yotes, including 'Stem himself. A growling male or fearful male would be expected. A cheeky one however...! He quite remained calm, any of that surprise from earlier would be wiped clean, and there's only a grinning coyote sitting there now, tail outright wagging. "Nuh uh. Hackles down, and I'll talk." He sticks out his tongue once more.
Curious though she was as to what exactly this male wanted, Camila never liked being told what to do. Not by anyone or anything, no matter if it was a lumbering bear, to a squealing rodent. Again, her teeth were bared, and she tucks her ears back in another warning. "How about you just tell me who you are before I really lose my patience." She says, a chuckle expressed afterward, though it was slightly sinister in it's tone. She wouldn't attack him now, but she wasn't going to sit there and be told how to behave by a stranger, either.
Bluestem cocks his head and sighs theatrically, tail curling up his flanks. "Oh very well." He nods his head. Now she was going to get answers! "If you're going to maul me, at least avoid the face. Nose aside, I think I look rather handsome from the neck up." He gestures with a forepaw, grinning his most sly coyote smile. "I also am rather fond of my pelt, too, and my ribs are still a bit sore from a fall I took the other day, so if you could just avoid this whole region as well." He noses back along said ribs, and at his chest ruff as well. "Plus, my paws are a bit sore, so try not to crunch on them. Oh! And of course, I'd rather you just leave anything back in the rump region tooth free. Some things are rather sensitive on a male you understand!" He bobs his head, grinning, and seems to call her bluff!
An agitated growl was all that Bluestem got in response, before Camila turned her paws around, ready to head back to the side of the plateau that she had planned on resting on. This male was getting on her nerves, but she couldn't necessarily bring herself to attack him for what she felt was an unwarranted reason. Plus.. he seemed to have been injured enough. "You are one dumb animal.." Camila mutters to herself, and slinks away back to where she was, hoping that he would not follow.
Camila's hopes are dashed, as she indeed hears the grass shift behind her. Like a silly, grinning pup, the male follows, black-tipped tail twitching behind him. "Now now, that's not very nice! I like to think I'm quite the intelligent critter!" He grins, pausing in his following. "Well at least on a general scale. Alright, I'll make you a deal. Tell me your name, and I'll tell you mine, and whatever else you would like to know."
"My experience with you so far would lead me to believe otherwise.." She says, her head carried lowly as she continues to trudge back to where she wanted to lay, where the sun was highest in the sky. Though the temperature wasn't as hot as she desired, laying right under the sun did warm her back and helped her to feel better. Curling up into a comfortable position, Camila's jaws open wide and her teeth are shown as she lets out a quiet yawn, and glares up at him again. "I don't care to know your name, and I don't care to give you mine, either."
Bluestem sprawls up in a huff, quite unwanted of course and curling into a matching coyote-ball with his back pressed to hers. "Well now you're just trying to hurt my feelings." He sniffs, though there's a giggle heard there too. He's a terribly cheeky bastard, but he's not done anything to threaten or otherwise. "Alright then! I'll name you myself. Hmm...you look like a..." He cocks hsi head over his shoulder, peering curiously. "I want to guess...Prairie Rose? Nah, too formal. How about Thistle Flower?"
Rolling her eyes at the male, Camila actually does enjoy the company.. to an extent. Though she was usually content with just her sister around, it was rather nice to see another coyote, and especially one that was as.. odd as this one. He really was a cheeky bastard, but perhaps that was why she put up with him so. Others would've already been chased off. Not this one, though. He was unique. Camila liked unique creatures. A brow was raised at the names that he assigned to her, rather liking the way that 'Prairie Rose' sounded, but shook her head at the both of them, keeping her ears tucked back in her warning still, but otherwise appearing not as threatening. "Neither." She says apathetically, and lets out a light sigh. "Camila." She says, looking away and over toward the hidden, sleeping form of her sister, apparently still not quite interested in his name.
Bluestem wouldn't see her sister, and certainly wouldn't have an easy time smelling her with his injured nose, but he still nods as she finally admits her name. "Well it's nice to meet a friendly creature finally! Everyone so far has either threatened to kick my skull in or eat me." He chuckles, lifting his head and twitching his tail. "I'm Bluestem, yes like the grass, my parents weren't the most original 'yotes." He sighs, peering off in the distance himself. "And as why I'm here, I'm new to these lands. Just trying to find a place to hole up for the most part." He continues on, whether she's listening or not, and goes on about meeting elk and dogs and dodging wolf dens on the way here, about his dinners the past few days, of a curious rock formation he saw earlier, and all in all just rambles on if she doesn't stop him!
Friendly? If Camila was his impression of a friendly creature, then she certainly did show some sympathy toward him. Inwardly, though. Outwardly she just appeared to be annoyed with him, and let her head rest on her forepaws, looking away from him as he told his story. "Bluestem, is it?" She interrupts near the end of his story, and glances at him through the corners of her eyes. "My sister and I have travelled a long ways as well.. we're not very new here, but trying to find a good place to stay as well." She says, knowing that she'll regret it, but.. having a male around might not've been such a bad idea. He was larger than she and Sierra were, and with his bulk came the off chance that he'd be a good .. shield. "If you can keep your trap shut, you can stay with us for a while." It was said so apathetically that it was almost as if she didn't mean it, but she did.
Bluestem barks a laugh! "Well I doubt I can keep too quiet, but I can give it a shot." He gives her that same, sly, coyote grin. "I do appreciate it though. Yes, I'll stay with you two for now I think." And soon there's a soft, friendly nuzzle to her shoulders. "You get some sleep though. If you're just as irritable in the morning I'll have to keep telling the story of my life, in real time no less!" Now there was a threat!
Eyeing him cautiously, she listens to what he says and simply nods her head, obviously wanting some rest more than more talking, even if she does get some sort of odd relief from listening to him speak. It'd been a long time since she'd had a nice conversation with a male, and even though this one got on her nerves at first, he /seemed/ nice enough. Coyotes were known for their tricks though, even to other 'yotes. The nuzzle he gave her wasn't expected, and a low rumble escaped her throat, but that was it. Keeping her head tucked low, she glared at him until her eyes closed, falling into a fairly light sleep.
Bluestem had been holding back another wince however, and as soon as she appears asleep he grimaces and touches his nose gently. Hmph, it should heal just fine, but it's going to be quite tender the next few days. Pressed with his back against Camila, he sighs tucks against his flanks, soon drifting off to sleep as well. Before he does, that black tailtip wriggles in contained amusement at it all.
