Nukpana - Female Horse
Lootah - Male Horse
Setting:
Wind-Blown Lowlands
----------------------------------------
Has Nukpana been purposely avoiding the stallions? No. But if she had been, she'd be doing a very good job. Actually she has merely not sought them out after she got wind of everything that happened, and that she hasn't seen much of them since hasn't bothered her one bit. Instead her attention has been devoted to grazing, trying to get as much nourishment as possible for herself and her foal before the winter ruins everything again.
Not far from where Nukpana is grazing does Lootah wander into the area. He'd been quite distant lately, trying his best to keep away from most of the herd if he was indeed going to detach himself and begin to wander off again. Still undecided though, he paces about here, lifting his head and seeing the other stallion-hating mare in the background. With a scoff, he lowers his head and begins to graze quietly. He didn't have to talk to her, she didn't have to talk to him. Though.. he had a feeling that he might get the boot.
Lifting her head when she hears the approach of another horse, Nukpana's face falls when she spots Lootah. Her tail snaps against her hind legs in irritation, and for a moment she can't seem to decide whether she should approach him or ignore him. On the one hoof, she has a lot she could say to him. On the other hoof, it'd probably all be wasted on a stallion like him. Eventually she snorts and walks just close enough to talk easily, coming to an abrupt halt. "Why are you still here?" she demands, her tone not hiding any of her irritation.
Lootah doesn't even grant her the courtesy of answering her question right away. Instead, he rips at some blades of grass that were already beginning to lose their flavor, and lifted his head slowly, taking in a breath while chewing at the greenery. When he was finished with the bite, he tucked his ears back and gave the same irritated snort. "I could ask you the same thing. I thought the last thing we needed was another mare with an attitude." Lootah says matter-of-factly, flicking his ears forward again and glaring down at her. Hey, if she didn't hide her irritation, he wouldn't hide his dislike.
The glare is repaid in kind from the large mare, who is not about to be intimidated by the likes of Lootah. "At least I intend to stay and contribute to the herd instead of selfishly looking after nobody but myself," Nukpana retorts, unable to hold anything back from this /male/ who presumes to judge her, "And of course you care nothing for me; what does your type care for a mare that's already pregnant? All you care about is mating. You disgust me." She spits the last few words out with such force that there's no doubt that she means every bit of it.
"Hmm." He mutters, nodding his head briefly and flicking his tail at his hocks. "That's a shame. And things were looking so well for the herd." Lootah's tone is flat and yet mocking at the same time, and then glances down to her belly. His muzzle wrinkles a bit, and he shakes his head, tossing his mane as he does so. "You? Pregnant?" He asks, clearly amazed that any self respecting stallion would go near the moody mare. "...Wow. It really can happen to anyone, huh?"
Well, what do you think made the moody mare so moody? Nukpana snorts in contempt, "Why do you seem to think I care about your opinion of me? It's as meaningless as anything you've ever said to a mare, I'd wager. Perhaps you're merely trying to make yourself feel better by insulting me? Well, go ahead, but it hardly makes what you are any better." She lifts her head high so that she can look down on the slightly smaller stallion, the picture of untarnished pride.
"I have a feeling that if you didn't care so much about what I thought of you, that you'd just ignore me." He says, his tone smart and rather mocking of her self-assurance. "Instead you insist on defending yourself, and insulting me in the process. What did I ever do to you, anyway?" He remarks, the last bit given with a roll of his eyes and a flick of his tail. While he could understand that some mares didn't like certain stallions, he was positive that he'd never done anything to earn the hatred that she harbored toward him. Not when she first arrived, anyway.
Eyes narrowing in anger, Nukpana's tail snaps against her hind legs again in irritation, "Must everything be about you? No, I don't care what you think. And I have been ignoring you, as if you didn't notice, unless you've got me confused with some other mare who's said more than two words to you. The only reason I care to say anything to you at all now is because I still don't know why you're still here! And it doesn't matter that you've done nothing to me yet. It's because of the 'yet'." A forehoof stomps to the ground to add emphasis to the last word, and her expression becomes firm in her confidence that she's right.
"I never tried to make things about me. You're the one who's talking about me." He says, taking on a cheeky attitude instead of getting frustrated with her. In all actuality though, he was frustrated. He was getting the blame for something he didn't even do, and it didn't sit right with Lootah. "You sure are an opinionated one. What's the matter? Had a bad experience with a male and now all males are to blame?" This is said with a grin, and he stomps a forehoof of his own as well, ready to play any game that she was trying to play with him. "Don't know what makes you think I'd do anything to you.. except, maybe avoid you."
A slight frown is all that Lootah's cheek seems to bring out in the blood bay mare, who is clearly not amused by his attempts to avoid talking about any real issue. But her expression goes more neutral at the stallion's questions, and as she considers her answer a fraction of her anger seems to leave. "Yes," Nukpana finally answers. Her voice has suddenly become quieter, though there's still a strong undertone of anger that makes her words seem that much more passionate for all softness. "I had a 'bad experience' with a male. One worse than you. No, that doesn't make all of you to blame, but it does mean that I'm not naive. I know what you are, I know what you do, and I don't want you anywhere near me. I don't need you, I don't want you, and perhaps you can tell me what a pregnant mare has to fear from a stallion who is not the father of her foal." Having said that, she settles back into an angry glare.
At this point it might've done Lootah well to sympathize for Nukpana, but he feels no sympathy toward her. None whatsoever, because of the way that she'd treated him since her arrival here. Who did she think she was, anyway? Instead, he nods his head apathetically and shrugs his shoulders. "Never claimed that you needed me or anything. I think you're trying to put words in my mouth." Rolling his eyes, he let out a chuckle at the 'know what you are' comment. "You don't know anything about me. Just like I don't know anything about you. Aside from the fact that it sounds like you got knocked up the bad way." A grin forms, and he perks his ears up, deciding maybe to test her a bit. "Which, you try to /seem/ like a strong mare.. but you couldn't fight him off, could you?"
Several emotions dance across Nukpana's expression in quick succession, most of them unpleasant, while she tries to decide how to take that. But what she settles on is different; a hint of humor in her eyes and a scoff, "You're right, you don't know me. You have no idea what happened, and yet you assume that the fact that something happened means that I'm weak." She shakes her head, "My life has never been that simple. You, on the other hoof... I don't need to know you to know what you're about. There's not much to your kind, is there?" There's a derisive tilt to her ear, but her slight amusement seems to have melted away a large portion of her anger.
"Well, that's a double standard if I've ever heard one." He says with a shrug of his shoulders and a flick of his tail. He may never like Nukpana and Nukpana may not ever like or even tolerate him, but he could at least prove her wrong a few times, just for his own satisfaction. "Not much to your kind either; the stallion-hating kind, I mean. It's almost a shame that you've got that foal coming. I'm sure it'll be filled with the same nonsense that you're filled with, thus procreating more.. whatsyourfaces."
Now that Nukpana's decided to be amused once, it seems to be spilling out all over the place as Lootah talks. "You just don't get it do you?" she says with a shake of her head, "I don't hate all stallions. I'll admit that I'm suspicious of all stallions, but can you really blame me for that? Or that I'd rather not have them around after what I went through? No, the hate came because you are too quick to choose violence and too quick to abandon the herd when things get tough. The only thing I can't figure out is why Darkstar wanted to keep a stallion like you around, and why you're bothering to stay since he's obviously not here babysitting you. You could leave, so why haven't you?" Perhaps the third time asking will be the charm?
"Yes, I can blame you for that." He says quickly and in a serious tone of voice. "Just because one stallion made a poor decision doesn't mean that all of us have to be accountable. I've never done anything to you." He repeats, and then flicks his tail harshly at his legs, stomping a hind hoof to drive his point further. "For the record.. that mare came at me. She was charging and I was defending myself. I'll admit too, that I did choose violence the second time she came by, and when Darkstar arrived.. but that mare was a threat and Darkstar was as well." Speaking of Darkstar, Lootah hadn't seen him in a while. Not that this particularly offended the painted stallion, but it did make him curious. Either way, he wound up letting out a snort of breath and turning away. "No one's making you stay either. Why don't you leave?" Obviously avoiding the question, but only because he had no real answer. He said he was leaving, and he never did. No reason why.. he just.. didn't.
"I am not holding you accountable for what another stallion did," Nukpana says with snort, "I merely want you to prove yourself worth my consideration and trust before I give them to you. You have failed to do so; in fact, you've only proven my suspicions correct." Flicking her tail dismissively, she turns and starts to walk away, "You're not even worth the time I've given you, but I thought you deserved a chance." Now that she's sure she'll never get the answer she wants, she finds that she's much more interested in grazing.
